The Greater Huntsville Humane Society found loving homes for 707 homeless animals in 2018. There are so many exceptional animals that come through our doors each and every day. Nevertheless, there are stories about unique animals that none of us can ever forget. One of those stories is about Chip.

Chip is an Australian Cattle Dog/American Staffordshire mix. He was found abandoned by a dumpster on April 21, 2017 at 3 months old. He developed tick paralysis, and was fostered by a GHHS staff member while he recovered. He was adopted and returned a few months later with very unruly behavior and acting starved for attention. Chip desperately wanted love and attention and would pull on clothes or bark wildly in his kennel because he wanted people to stop and play with him.

GHHS brought in a dog trainer to work with Chip. He did make some improvements, but, he was anxious and lonely in the shelter environment. He stayed at GHHS for almost a year, overlooked because of his anxious behavior. He was then transferred to the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington D.C. on May 19, 2018. His behavior worsened and a staff member brought him back to GHHS a month later.

He stayed another 2 months at GHHS. His behavior greatly improved as he matured into an adult dog. On August 8, 2018, Chip got his second chance. He was adopted by the Meyers family and gained a Border Collie brother named Oreo. The Meyers family reported that Chip and Oreo loved each other immediately and Chip has been a model dog in their home.

We are fortunate to report stories like Chip’s happen frequently at the Greater Huntsville Humane Society. Exceptional animals are brought to the shelter and

through our program find another place to call home.

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, our mission remains the same: to use rescue, training, adoption, education, and advocacy to ensure the humane treatment of all animals.

GHHS had fantastic adoption numbers in 2018. Our high adoption numbers are due to the excellent care provided by our staff, our

wonderful foster homes, awareness created through social media, radio, and television, and last but not at all least, our new HHOT

Dogz transport program. We are well on our way in 2019 to exceeding our 2018 adoption numbers and providing even more

second chances for animals.

At the Greater Huntsville Humane Society, we value not only compassion for animals but compassion for people too. Often there are pet owners in the community who are having financial difficulty and need help caring for the pets they love. GHHS’s Helping Paws program offers assistance when pet owners are in need.

King’s Community Kitchen is the largest pet food pantry in the state of Alabama. In 2018, more than 15,000 lbs of pet food was donated to families in need. GHHS extends its reach by donating pet food to Manna House and SNAP.

The Pet Wellness Clinic is held on the second Saturday of each month. Rocket City Mobile Vet parks on site and offers discounted veterinary services to families with a household income of less than $35,000. A preliminary exam fee of $12 is required for the vet to familiarize themselves with the animals. Other discounted services include, but are not limited to, flea and tick treatment, vaccinations, microchipping, heartworm and flea/tick prevention.

The Good Samaritan program provides assistance with emergency vet bills. Pet owners who have a pet who has suddenly fallen ill or has been injured can seek help from GHHS for help with payment of their veterinary bill in order to have their animal cared for and restored to good health as quickly as possible. GHHS works with many veterinarians in the area and donated over $25,000 to emergency vet care for animals in 2018.

HELPING PAWS

Paws for Reading is a reading program designed to enrich the lives of the dogs and cats in our care at GHHS. Children 6 to 15 years of age can participate when they are accompanied by a parent. Reading to the animals makes the dogs and cats feel more comfortable with people and reduces anxiety, which in turn will make them more adoptable. Children will have the opportunity to improve their reading ability by reading to a nonjudgmental audience and make a difference in an animal’s life.

GHHS began our transport program, HHOT Dogz (Huntsville Hounds on Transport) in May 2018.

Our transport van was graciously donated by Jerry Damson Automotive Group and can carry up to 20 dogs, depending on their sizes. The journey is driven by two volunteer drivers who leave GHHS on a Friday evening, deliver dogs on a Saturday morning and return to Huntsville on a Sunday. The dogs are taken to a rescue where there is high demand for family friendly dogs in their shelter. Our dogs are given second chances by loving families in that area.

The HHOT Dogz program allows GHHS to provide more loving homes for unwanted animals each year. Each time we transport animals for second chances, we then have the space to take in additional unwanted animals and provide them with second chances.

In 2018, 52 dogs were transported and placed into loving homes. We look forward to continuing this wonderful service and offering even more second chances.

The Lucky Dog program is presented to school aged children. It is a multi-level humane education program designed for third and fifth graders. It shares with them the basic needs of animals: food and water, shelter, love and exercise and veterinarian care. Each session (fall and spring semester) expands upon the previous one as we talk about the importance of vaccines, heartworm and flea control, spay and neuter, the proper way to approach a dog, obedience training and more

This program is ideal for both elementary

schools during the regular academic

year and summer programs.

GHHS would not be able to follow through with our mission without volunteers who provide much needed manpower to provide a variety of services at GHHS.

Volunteers can be found doing all sorts of tasks including, cleaning before the shelter opens, spending quality time playing with the animals, lending a hand in the Thrift Store, greeting visitors at the front desk, and helping at events, to name only a handful.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers for contributing 117,000 hours to the shelter in 2018. You made a big difference in the lives of our animals.

The GHHS Thrift Store, located directly behind the shelter, sells donated clothing and household goods. The proceeds from the Thrift Store help provide care for our shelter animals. Donated goods range from clothes, home décor, furniture, books, and dishware. Every sale in the Thrift Store helps to fund vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, basic medical care, food, and pet supplies for the shelter.

The Thrift Store operates with a very small staff and a big group of passionate volunteers. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30am until 4:30pm and accepts donations until 4:00pm six days a week.

Each year, the Dog Ball is GHHS’s largest fundraising event. Since 1990, the Dog Ball has evolved to include a silent auction, corporate sponsorships, a drawing for tickets to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the presentation of family dogs, military service dogs, personal service dogs, and GHHS shelter dogs. In 2018 there were 60 VID’s (Very Important Dogs) presented at the Dog Ball.

There were 800 tickets sold for the 2018 Dog Ball. Proceeds from the event totaled approximately $100,000. Proceeds are used to help care for the animals in our shelter and provide them with second chances.

The theme for the 2018 Dog Ball was “Rocket Dogzz.” This was the perfect theme for the “Rocket City.” Thank you to Lana Ritch who chaired the event. Everyone enjoyed the evening, especially the dogs.

GHHS believes in financial transparency and accountability. We share our data as a Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity and a Guidestar Silver-level member.

The shelter’s budget continues to grow to meet community needs, save animals’ lives, and rehome more animals than ever before. Our building and grounds allow us to provide stellar animal care with outdoor kennels and exercise yards.

We have also been able to invest in the organization to ensure our longevity to fulfill this important mission for years to come.
