2018 brings changes to Helping Hands
We start this year with great expectations.
Our Community and Adult Day Center is open, we are offering more than 20 different support programs, the number of people benefiting from our pro-grams is at an all time high, and our local, state and regional support is solid.
We are especially excited about the talented new staff members who are join-ing Helping Hands. I will be stepping down as Executive Director of Helping Hands effective February 1, 2018. We are thrilled to share that Carol Lunquist has been hired as our new Executive Director (see Carol’s thoughts below.)
Carol brings knowledge, experience and passion in supporting senior adults through her work managing the Catholic Charities congregate dining programs. Carol is a long-time resi-dent of Holdingford. Other staff additions include:
Tiffany Grnik: our new Service and Volunteer Coordinator. Tiffany will be matching our volunteers with those who need services, recruiting and training volunteers and planning our monthly programs and outings.
Lorene DeFord: our new Health and Wellness Coordinator. Lorene has been a dedicated volunteer leading our exercise and Tai Ji Quan pro-
gram in St. Stephen. Now she will be coordinating our healthy visits, exercise and health education classes and our health fairs.
As for me my future plans include spending more time as a volunteer, which in-cludes with Helping Hands Outreach. The friendships I have made in Holdingford and St. Stephen during my time here are something I wish to continue. I an anxious to learn how to play the card game of 500.
Frank Haynes Executive Director
Meet new executive director Carol Lundquist
I'm very excited to be joining Helping Hands Outreach. Having raised
my family here and lived in the area for 25 years I am familiar with
the work of the agency and look forward to getting to know everyone and continuing the valuable services and good works Helping Hands has
provided.

Five tips for preventing
common winter dangers
1) Be aware of ice
Make sure to wear shoes with good traction and non-skid soles,
and stay inside until the roads are clear. Use a walking stick or
cane and make sure it has a solid tip on the bottom. Take off
shoes as soon as you return indoors because often snow and
ice attach to the soles and, once melted, can lead to slippery
conditions inside.
2) Dress for Warmth
Don't let your indoor temperatures go too low and dress in layers. Wear warm socks, a
heavy coat, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. In very cold temperatures, cover exposed skin
and use a scarf to cover your mouth and protect your lungs.
3) Fight Wintertime Depression
To help avoid feelings of isolation and loneliness stay connected with family members;
even a short, daily phone call can make a big difference. Arrange a check-in system with
neighbors and friends, where each person looks in on one or two others daily.
4) Check the Car
Get your car serviced, ask a family member to bring it to a garage for you. Checking things
like the tires, battery and wipers can make a big difference on winter roads. 5) Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Using a fireplace or gas heater can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Check the batteries
on your carbon monoxide detector and buy an updated one if you need to.
Be willing to ask for help. If you need help with snow or a ride somewhere, ask a family
member, neighbor, or call Helping Hands Outreach, 320-746-9960. On Wednesdays any-
one can take the city bus from Holdingford to Albany - for grocery shopping, medical ap-
pointments or anything. The bus goes to St. Cloud on Friday mornings. Call 251-1612 for
details and to arrange for pick up at your front door.

Adult day center volunteer opportunities
Playing cards, reminiscing, friendly competition in bean bag toss, basketball, or mini golf or
just coffee and visiting; these are a few of the activities volunteers can participate in to en-
rich the atmosphere and programming at our new adult day center.
Do you or someone you know have a musical talent that could be shared? We would love to
place you on our list of potential volunteers.

2018 volunteer opportunities
Looking for a fun start to the new year, consider volunteering with Helping Hands Outreach.
Current opportunities include:
Data entry: we need someone to enter data on a computer at the end of each month. This could be accomplished from your home computer (1-2 hours).
Snow shoveling: do you have a few minutes to help clear the walk of a senior adult? Call
us and get on our snow shoveling list.
Drivers: we are always in need of more drivers to take senior adults to medical appoint-
ments or shopping. Most requests are during the timetime of workweeks.
Housekeeping: volunteers willing to vacuum, clean refrigerators, wash a load of clothes
and tidy up the home of a senior adult.
