2018 Annual Report Squam’s Land Trust Dear Friends, I am honored to write my first President’s Report to the membership of the Squam Lakes Conservation Society. I’m grateful for the confidence you placed in me as I took up the gavel at the August 2018 Annual Meeting. I also want to recognize retiring President, Carl Metzger, for his leadership over the last three years. I look forward to building on Carl’s success. The SLCS had another great year in 2018. Once again, you, our members, deserve a great deal of credit for this accomplishment. You are the source of record financial support in 2018, with more funds raised for our annual giving campaign than ever before in our history. And you remain our most critical resource: the volunteers who ensure the stewardship of our conserved properties. Credit is due, too, to the performance of our remarkable staff: Executive Director, Roger Larochelle again led our team of Pete Helm, Stewardship Director; Alicia Abbott, Director of Advancement; GIS specialist Zach Brohinsky and land protection expert, Doug Hill. They are a dedicated and hard-working team who embody our values and goals. For those of you who haven’t met them, stop by the office. Bring a sandwich and join them for lunch. Tell them what interests you. They will help you get involved, or more involved, in our work. I’m guessing you will share some laughs and end up with lots to do! Last year we acquired eight new conservation interests. Our challenge is to convert the excitement we felt as we acquired these properties into support for their long-term stewardship. Again, we need your involvement to make sure we fulfill our promises. Your Board has been busy as well. Last year we began to update our strategic plan under the able leadership of Anne Lovett and the Strategic Planning Committee. Already, this exercise has prompted several initiatives. These include a hard look at how we set priorities in acquiring conservation properties, identifying what it will take to fund our stewardship responsibilities in perpetuity, ensuring that we gain the support of the next generation of visitors and landowners, and the development of a forum through which we can work with our partners to meet the challenges of climate change and other environmental threats. You will be hearing more about these initiatives in the months ahead. We encourage you to get involved and, most importantly, thank you for your support. Best Wishes Winthrop Brown, President Carl Metzger and Win Brown

2018 Annual Report

Squam’s Land TrustDear Friends,

I am honored to write my first President’s Report to the membership of the Squam Lakes Conservation Society.

Best Wishes

Winthrop Brown, President

2018 Property Monitoring Team – Quiet ExcellenceIt is so rewarding to be associated with the team of players listed below! Due to their efforts, SLCS permanently conserves more land every year knowing that this experienced group is up to the challenge of attracting friends and family to carry on the tradition of volunteer conservation easement monitoring with SLCS. If you think you may have an interest in a new outdoor experience that directly contributes to protecting everything we all love about Squam, please let us know! Monitoring doesn’t take a lot of time, you will be fully trained, and this group of volunteers loves to share special places with new faces. SO…when you see someone from the list below, buy them

a cup of coffee or a quick treat. They deserve it (and so much more) for the way they quietly and expertly get the job done, protecting this place we love. Quiet excellence indeed.

We are fortunate to have dedicated and knowledgeable members on our Investment and Finance Committees to help ensure SLCS is prudently managing its financial resources.
