It is because of you that we are able to provide opportunities for better lives to the individuals and families we serve. Moreover, your strong belief in our mission has let us evolve over the years so we can respond, quickly and compassionately, to ever-changing community needs. For Children’s Aid and Family Services, 2018 was just such a year of evolution and transition. We made several significant programmatic decisions, and the impact of those decisions are reflected in the 2018 operating results. The bottom line is that Children’s Aid and Family Services is now better positioned to serve our various — and growing — constituencies.

We are pleased to report that we’ve recently accepted an exciting opportunity to help even more people. Because of your support over the years, we’ve developed considerable expertise in providing high-quality care to some of our community’s most vulnerable individuals. As a result, we’ve been asked by the state to take over the operation of eight group homes in Passaic County for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In all, 55 people in those homes are now under our care. The challenge is a big one, but so is the opportunity. What’s more, the state’s confidence in Children’s Aid speaks clearly to the reputation for quality care we’ve built over the decades. That legacy of excellence would be impossible without you.

Another urgent community need is alcohol and drug abuse prevention, education and recovery support, and local officials are increasingly turning to The Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources for its expertise. Last year our Recovery Specialists began working closely with individuals in early recovery to help them rebuild their lives. This program has filled an urgent need in the community and participation has grown by 50% in a year.

In keeping with our history and mission, we still have a strong commitment to children and families. We are focused on finding caring families for our children in foster care and adoptive families for older children. We are proud that an 18-year-old boy was adopted by his mentor after spending nine years in foster care! Our Mobility Mentoring program, which provides one-on-one mentoring to the young mothers in Zoe’s Place and the teenagers who have left our foster care, has grown to help 31 young people attain their education and career goals. Finally, our Baby Basics program has expanded into Essex County, helping even more struggling families with little ones.

It is only with your support that we can provide opportunities for better lives to those we serve. We are so grateful to you!

Grand Opening of STRIVE Day ProgramChildren’s Aid and Family Services opened its STRIVE Day Program for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. STRIVE is located at 200 Robin Road in newly remodeled space that features dedicated life skills, technology, arts, crafts and music center, yoga and movement space, sensory room and a commercial kitchen. Many thanks to The William Randolph Hearst Foundation, along with the Alfiero and Lucia Palestroni Foundation, for providing funding for the renovations.

Adopted at Age 18 The average age of a foster child waiting to be placed with a new family is eight, and it takes two to five years for the majority of these children and adolescents to be adopted. Marcus was in foster care for nine years. John became his mentor five years ago and over time they formed a deep bond. At the age of 18, Marcus was officially adopted by John.

Our Dedicated Volunteers We were founded by volunteers in 1899, and we are so grateful to all of those who donate their time and talent to us, from running The Depot Gift Shop in Midland Park to painting and gardening our group homes to leading diaper drives for our Baby Basics program.

Zoe’s Place: The Gift of Life Zoe’s Place provides pregnant teenagers, young moms and their babies with safe, supervised housing. Our mentoring and support services teach critical life skills to help the young mothers become self-sufficient and raise healthy babies. Since 2014, Zoe’s Place has been home to more than 80 teens and their babies. Pictured here are some of the mothers, babies and staff.

Our mission is to strengthen families and empower individuals — children and adults alike — to reach their fullest potential.

What We Do Founded in 1899 with a focus on child protection and adoption, Children’s Aid and Family Services has placed more than 11,000 children with loving families. While helping children and families is still a core part of our mission, the agency has evolved and expanded to meet ever-changing social needs. In addition to adoption, our programs include:

n Community homes, support services and day programming for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

n Therapeutic Foster Care services provided by foster parents who receive specialized training to provide care in their homes to children and teens who have suffered from neglect, abuse and trauma. Services include specialized clinical counseling, psychiatric support, case management services, 24/7 on-call support and crisis counseling as needed.

n Free nutritional formula and diapers for low-income families.

n Outpatient counseling services to children ages 4–17 and their families.

n Safe, supervised housing and support services for pregnant teens and young mothers and their babies who might otherwise be homeless.

n Community and school-based substance abuse prevention and education programs and recovery support services.

our mission

families were provided with therapeutic guidance because one or more of the children were having difficulty spending time with a parent.
