Directorsrsquo Reflections

Everyday of the past 10 years has been my honour and privilege to be a Director of KSF I could never have imagined the amount of work we would have undertaken and the wide range of groups we have assisted over this period Community support is a core value of mine personally and being a part of KSF has allowed me to be very actively involved at all levels of philanthropic community service The measure of our success has been the smiling faces and incredible appreciation we have received from so many disadvantaged people and communities I have also learnt so much and grown over this period and continue to be inspired particularly by our Founder Rhonda wo is an incredible and yet humble humanitarian

It was a joy to celebrate KSFrsquos tenth birthday with the many amazing organisations who have become part of the KSF family since 2008 The day of celebration reinforced so strongly the importance of relationships and the fun we have at the grass roots where many great friendships are forgedThese relationships are built on our core values of trust respect diversity social inclusion transparency and two-way communication We could see the value of the KSF relationships and community during our anniversary celebrations After all our relationships become the agents for social changeOver the past few years the culture of many major national organisations has failed customers and communities alike Royal Commissions into Sexual Assault and the Banking Superannuation and Financial Services industry have uncovered poor governance and unethical behaviour Our ABC Cricket Australia even my beloved Bombers were all damaged through questionable governance and greedy organisational decisions These circumstances remind us about the imperative for strong values-based governance and the importance of creating value for our customers collaborators and beneficiaries - whether we work in the private sector with a foundation or a community organisation They also highlight the necessity of corporate giving and philanthropy ndash to support the communities that support us and to build a culture of care within our organisations KSF strives to achieve strong ethical governance This is fundamental to the way we support grass roots organisations communities and individuals We continue our pledge - to listen to our communities and to remain true to our shared values

The Past Year - Reflection2017 ndash 2018 as our tenth year has given us time to identify and

prioritise key program areas by developing strategies that review past programs and partnerships

This has enabled us to identify activities and assess plans and checklists against values mission and vision other programs point of difference and our relationships We are now able to ensure a solid

investment mix whilst ensuring on-going communications and response to immediate needs

We have been able to build a database of other funders and identify key contacts in order to build relationship over time allowing us to monitor and set varying levels of investment dependent on need and

priorityWe have worked to increase our public engagement profile and partnerships and spent some time on our

communication and engagement channels in order to move the foundation forward

We realise that innovation comes out of reflection To this end we have challenged ourselves by holding strategic planning days to ensure we can build and maintain investments and contributions whilst reviewing

our longer term sustainability and our succession planning

It has been a huge tenth year but together we have been able to define our purpose our broad and and comprehensive tactics and our future as a caring and hands-on foundation

The Past Year ndash A CelebrationldquoIt was so wonderful to be surrounded by people doing

incredible work with communities in Australia with warm and loving support of the Kindred Spirits Foundationrdquo

It was a grey day in the Latrobe Valley but not in Traralgon not on Queens Parade where the wide doors of VRI Hall stood open

spilling the warmth of this community celebration into the morning streets The joy the diversity the sparkling of hope all

made possible by the communities empowered by the support of ten-year-old philanthropic organisation Kindred Spirits

Foundation

We saw a day long birthday party with each food and information laden table a history of accomplishment from the United Muslim Sisters of Latrobe Valley (UMSLV) cultural display and offering of home cooked

delicacies the United Way Dolly Pardon Imagination Library childrenrsquos book display to the wonders of the Kakadu Plum enterprise to the offered materials by the Tripodi family of Traralgon whose late husband dad and uncle Vince had the original idea for the Big Red Bus allowing those who require dialysis the chance to

have a holiday whilst still receiving treatment

There were stilt walkers from the Womenrsquos Circus a Kakadu plum cordial making demonstration by young people from Wadeye in the Northern Territory working at the Dumu Balcony Cafeacute a social enterprise in Bright north east

Victoria Sale of Interrentye traditional healing products from Akeyulerre Healing Centre Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and native herbs and spices from Natif It was very special to have the Frog Hollow-Wurreranginy

community in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia join us in spirit asking for contributions to their crowd funding campaign to build an Early learning Centre

Of great importance to Kindred Spirits were stalls for people to join the Val-You Reading community and the launch of the Traralgon East Community Connect Community Lunches Recipe Book Lots of Sarahrsquos homemade soup and

Kelliersquos cookies which were very popular

The venue was full of First Australians new Australians rural and urban young and old wanting to tell to show everyone what Kindred Spirit had made possible but the real emphasis of the day was on what communities could do when respected with support The laughter of children from so many backgrounds the sweep of creative change the

generosity of each to each filled the hall What does hope look like in this often difficult timemdashit was there in that hall concrete responsible and visionary

Of great importance to Kindred Spirits were stalls for people to join the Val-You Reading community and the launch of the Traralgon East Community Connect Community Lunches Recipe Book Lots of Sarahrsquos homemade soup and

Kathy Havers

We have been able to build a database of other funders and identify key contacts in order to build relationship over time allowing us to monitor and set varying levels of investment dependent on need and
