Dear Donors, Dear Friends and Supporters,
If you could design a better future together, what would it be like? If you could paint a wall – for a
child in hospital, an elderly person in a home, or a refugee in a centre – what would you draw? If
you could create a game to distract yourself in lonely times, what would it be? If asked to talk
about your emotions, what would you say? These are some of the questions asked to and by
Anouk Foundation this year, in our day to day activities and projects.
We dedicate this year’s letter to the projects and people with whom we have worked.
For our 10th Anniversary we created the Art4Impact programme in collaboration with the
University of Geneva, to engage directly with children and students and give them a voice. We
have already received 400 proposals. A jury selected over 20 works that are being realised in
various institutions in Europe.
In 2018 we received the 2018 Jaap Schouten Award for our project at the new Princess Máxima
Center for Child Oncology. The children treated at the Center submitted ideas that we integrated
into our therapeutic murals. This award gives us further determination in our mission, showing
how visual art can make for meaningful positive change and emotional relief. As Paul Klee put it:
“One eye sees, one eye feels.”
We would also like to thank our generous donors. In 2018, we completed therapeutic murals in 18
wards across five countries – for a total of 180 projects in 15 countries – brightening the lives of
3.8 million children, adolescents, and adults since our creation.
We are deeply grateful to the energetic team in the office, the dynamic Action Committee and the
artists for their talent, dedication, and enthusiasm.
Please keep engaging with those around you; be our best ambassadors.
Kindly,
Jean-Charles RoguetPresident

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Geneva, May 2019
Our mission: brightening lives
Clinical environment in any type of healthcare centre can provoke fear and disarray among patients and
residents. Our vision is a world in which illness, accidents and aging become a less traumatic and
fearful experience thanks to an institution’s reassuring and welcoming atmosphere.
We use art to improve healing and promote well-being in social and medical institutions where
children or adults spend time away from home.
Our impact: increasing well-being
Over 650 scientific publications and years of experience have shown that the environment has a huge
impact on patients’ recovery and wellbeing. Through our paintings we help to:
Our methodology: bespoke projects
Our team of artists paint therapeutic murals based on the principles of art therapy and evidence-
based design in hospitals, special needs institutions, orphanages, psychiatric centres and nursing
homes. This improves the well-being of the patients, residents, families and staff.
We always work in close collaboration with the staff of the chosen institution to create a project fully
adapted to their needs. The result is a tailored-made project achieved in a quick, efficient and cost-
effective manner.
Brighten and improve working conditions (reported by 100% of staff): a welcoming
environment has a positive influence on the treatment of patients and wellbeing of the staff
(their motivation is increased, there is less running and shouting).
Reduce anxiety (reported by 89% of patients, families and staff): a soothing atmosphere
brings comfort to patients and their families (patients are less agitated, children cry less).
Encourage interaction (reported by 96% of staff) and improve communication (reported
by 91% of families): caregivers use the murals as a storytelling tool to engage with the
patients, communicate, stimulate, orient, and explain any planned activities (children are
distracted during treatments, older patients are stimulated).

A room with smiles is uplifting.
Institution Kinder Klinik – Kantonsspital Aarau
Location Aarau - Switzerland
Ward(s) enhanced Oncology; Emergency; Day-care
Patients per year 15’000
Donors Private donor, Sikkens Switzerland
We worked in 22 treatment
rooms and 8 patient rooms
to reduce fear. Soft colours
and gentle humour create a
comforting atmosphere and
distract from the impersonal
medical institution.
“The murals help with daily contact with our patients and their parents, further they have a positive effect on
negative experiences such as pain or surgery.”
Dr. med. K. Scheinemann, Head-Doctor, Peadiatric Oncology, Kantonsspital Aarau

Institution Inselspital (partner since 2016)
Location Bern - Switzerland
Ward(s) enhanced Paediatric Pulmology
Patients per year 3’000
Donors Fondation Johanna Dürmüller-Bol, private donor, Sikkens Switzerland
With humour we help the
young patients understand the
exercises in the different
treatment rooms and invite
them to join in the scene. The
murals become a tool to
engage the patients and to
have a less traumatic
treatment.
“Instead of white walls, now
colourful landscapes welcome us.
Children, parents and we the staff
are enchanted by the fun animals!
They incite us to participate in their
action!”
Prof. Dr. med. Philipp Latzin, Head of
Paediatric Pneumology ward,
Inselspital

DISTRACTING
“The project is a success story! It looks marvellous and
we continuously get good feedback from patients and
parents. Everyone is enthusiastic! And for the staff it is
a great tool to distract young patients during
treatments.”
Dr Hugo Ubieto, Paediatrician, St Gallen
2018 PROJECTS in for children
With the murals we help children
with their examinations and
exercises. For now they have little
friends showing them how to do
things and doing it all with them!
Institution Royal Hospital for Children (partner since 2016)
Location Glasgow - UK
Ward(s) enhanced Cardiology Clinic; Respiratory Clinic; Sleep laboratory
Patients per year 17’000
Donor Anonymous donor, Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity,

rooms where for example respiratory
exams usually take 40 minutes. With the
murals, we are able to distract the
children and it makes things easier for us
and for them.”

Location Utrecht - Holland
Ward(s) enhanced 47 Paediatric treatment rooms
Patients per year 600
Donors Jaap Schouten Foundation, Sikkens Holland
The children were very involved,
giving many ideas for scenes
they’d like to see on the walls.
We then used these to integrate
the medical equipment in a
playful way.
“With gratitude and joy we
thank you for all the unique
murals! The murals are very
important for the well-being of
the children and therefore a big
added value. It brings so much
in their lives: colour, happiness,
distraction and joy.
This quality art is unique and
valuable for everyone in the
Princes Maxima Centre. For the
children, their families, as well
for people working and
visiting.”

DEDRAMATISING
2018 PROJECTS in for children
The goal was to create
murals to reduce stress and
to open up conversations on
the theme of travel for
younger patients.
For teen-agers in the
Addiction clinic the theme
was urban activities and
sports for teenagers.
Institution Hospital of Copii
Location Cluj Napoca - Romania
Ward(s) enhanced Paediatric Psychiatric ward; Juvenile Addiction clinic

DAYDREAMING"Now the clinic has changed! New children are always surprised to find walls full of colour in a
hospital, returning patients always discover new details. And for me personally, I feel more at
peace with my workplace: every time something bothers me, I calm down as I look at the walls.
Not only because of the drawings, but also because of what they represent: good things
always happen if you put in the work and find the right people."
Dr. Radu Tenter, Psychiatrist, Paediatric Psychiatry and Juvenile Addiction Clinic

Research shows that trees have a very
calming and soothing effect: “Mr. R, a
patient, often tells us that the sunny frescos
bring in life! They are encouraging and
reassuring to him!” Sylvia Marcionetti,
Head nurse, Oncology ward, HUG
“This project in our
7 treatment rooms
and 3 waiting-
rooms, improves
without a doubt the
day-to-day of our
ward, making it
much more
welcoming and

Donors Private donor, Gottfried & Ursula Schäppi-Jecklin Stiftung,
American International Women’s Club, Sikkens Switzerland
Residents suffering from
Alzheimer’s come to this home
for a few weeks only; our goal
was to create stimulating
surroundings in which they could
orientate themselves a little and
from which they didn’t want to
flee.
“Now we have many smiles and fingers that caress the
walls. Families feel their loved ones are in a home and
not in an institution. Staff find the murals gentle and
helpful. The residents react to one or another painted
scene, giving a little sense to their continuous
wandering.”

Location Geneva - Switzerland
Environment enhanced Male asylum seekers
Residents per year 70
Donors Trafigura Foundation, private donors, Sikkens Switzerland
This centre only has male residents
who are in transition. There is a lot
of tension as they are afraid and
lost and need emotional and
psychological support. A
welcoming and cheerful
surroundings helps them confront
the day-to-day with hope.
Residents are well-accompanied migrant birds
14
“For the asylum seekers it is really helpful to arrive in such a place where they can rest, breathe and day-dream a
little bit. They have struggled so much during their exodus. One of our refugees, Mr F., often tells us that the
murals bring joy and life! It’s an encouragement to integrate Switzerland for him.”

The positive environment helps
the asylum seekers to feel
recognised and valued; it gives
them emotional strength to start
new lives and to cope with the
unknown, far from their
countries’ habits and families.
15
“The impact on the team and the residents is clearly visible, the 20 appartments are brightened and more
cheerful. Everyone is very happy with the result and the residents respect the work: murals are in very good
condition.”

2018 PROJECTS in for children
Words of wisdom in the various corridors.
Institution Clair Bois Foyer Chambésy (partner since 2012)
Location Geneva - Switzerland
Environment enhanced Garden for children up to 12 years old
Residents 30
Donors Clair Bois Foyer Chambésy, private donor
Playing outside and spending time
outdoors is important to children’s
health. The Anouk Foundation
collaborated with the Clair-Bois team
and Musical Therapy Consulting to help
create a sensory garden for the children
to play in, interact with, and learn. The
different installations facilitate this
learning. The musical cow is a
customized tool with typical Swiss
attributes like the bell around its neck.
Fabrics of different colours and
textures, instruments like violins and
percussions are fixed to the animal to
help the children stimulate their senses;
open their ears, train their fine motor
skills, learn rhythm, stroking, patting
and tickling the cow. This multi-sensory,
interactive sculpture can be replicated
and adapted to various situations or
settings.
“Everyone spends time in our garden: it’s a happy place that is adapted to our children. The playground is now accessible for children of all ability levels and provides many opportunities for learning. The musical cow has
become the children’s mascot and emotional support animal in the garden.”
Ruth Brocqueville, Director of Clair-Bois Chambésy

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Johnson & Johnson co-
sponsored a project towards the
well-being of adults in the
oncology day-care center at the
University Hospital in Geneva.
18
We work with companies to create tailor-made programmes
matching their goals.
We organise Community Days for companies: these fun and purposeful
days focus on empathy and creativity and allow employees to produce art
which complements our therapeutic murals in medical institutions, and has
a positive impact on patients’ recovery and well-being.
“There is a system, it has been thoroughly thought through and the result
is excellent.”, Johnson & Johnson
“Something completely new which one can personally identify with.”

Corporate Volunteering
Employees cycled, ran or painted to raise funds for local projects in line
with the companies vision. The funds were either matched or the
employees got time off from work to fundraise.
The funds allowed us to create murals and create a sense of welcome in
two refugee centres in Switzerland, as well as to soothe patients in the
oncology day-care centre in Geneva.
