About O-YA

The Mission of the Osgoode Youth Association is to enrich the quality of life for youth in Grades 2 - 12 in rural south Ottawa. We are dedicated to harnessing our community to deliver a rich variety of programs aimed at social recreation, skill building, leadership, healthy relationships, physical activity and culture; supporting young people in their development as successful, independent and involved citizens. Mayor Watson calls O-YA the “gold standard of youth centres in Ottawa”! We’re proud to offer:

Who is O-YA?

Board of Directors

O-YA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. In 2018, O-YA’s Board of Directors included: Jeff Griesbach (Board Chair), Leah Hostetler (Treasurer), Steve Johnson (Director), Lynne Whitehead (Director) and Michelle Colford (Secretary) .

Executive Director

O-YA’s Executive Director is Nicole McKerracher. Nicole has been O-YA’s Executive Director since March of 2011, and employed at O-YA since 2008. She lives in Osgoode with her husband and 2 teenage sons (who both attend O-YA’s programming). Nicole is a graduate of Simon Fraser University with a Psychology major and a graduate of the Loyalist College of Arts & Technology’s Advertising program. Before coming to O-YA, Nicole was an Account Manager at Communique Ad Agency in Toronto and Creative Director of they integrated in Belleville, Ontario for 10 years. Nicole is Co-Chair of the Ottawa Child & Youth Initiative’s Critical Hours Task Group and member of the Rural Issues Committee (RIC), Rural Youth Centres Coalition (RYC), Ottawa Youth Leadership Roundtable and Social Emotional Issues Collective.

Program Coordinator

Carley Scharf has been employed as a Youth Worker at O-YA since 2011, and was a loyal participant and volunteer for years before that! Carley has worked as O-YA’s Program Coordinator since 2013.

Youth Workers

The face, heart, soul and personality of O-YA - we are so proud of our fantastic Youth Workers! In 2018, O-YA employed 7 young adults as Youth Workers: Carley Scharf (also O-YA’s Program Coordinator), Scott Seeley (until June 2018), Lindsay Adams, Joe Nesrallah, Jordan DesRoches, Hunter Peacock and Emily Dozois.

Community Volunteers

In 2018, O-YA was very grateful for the time and talents of 165 volunteers (both youth

and adults) who contributed a combined 1,793 hours to our programs and services!

Who Comes to O-YA?

In 2018, 1,476 unique individuals visited O-YA. Specifically, O-YA had:

• 56 unique participants registered in our Before Breakfast Club & After School Homework Club.

• 40 unique participants attended our Day Programs; such as PD Day, March Break, Summer Camp and

Winter Break Camps.

• 40 unique participants attended our Red Cross Babysitting Courses.

• 110 participants attended our Teen Drop In programming.

• 1,230 participants attended at least one of O-YA’s all ages Community events such as the ‘Goode Run

(467), Road Hockey Tournament (30), Summer Block Party (300), Haunted Orchard (231), Escape Rooms

(50), Lebanese Cooking Event (21) and Hot Cocoa Before the Santa Parade (130).

• External groups who use O-YA’s space include: Live n’ Learn Playgroup (bi-weekly), ROSSS Senior Drop In

(weekly), ROSSS Walk of Care fundraising event (annually).

• O-YA hosted 28 Party Rentals in 2018.

O-YA’s 2018 Financials

In 2018, The Osgoode Youth Association had a total income of $228,322 and total expenses of $232,146. O-YA’s 2018 Net Income of -$3,824 was covered by cash reserves.

Programs for Youth in Grades 2 - 6

Before School ProgramDaily during the school year from 6:30 am - bus pick up

After School Homework Club (Funded in part by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Sport)Daily during the school year from 2:45 pm - 5:30 pmProgramming that focuses on homework, physical activity, healthy eating, positive relationships and FUN!

Day CampsWinter Break, PA Days, March Break and Summer Holidays from 8 am - 5 pmOutdoor play, physical activity, group games, crafts, cooking, free time, themed activities and much more.

Programs for Youth in Grades 5 - 8

Road Hockey TournamentSunday, March 25, 2018Organized by a local teen, a round robin tournament between 10 am - 4 pm in the parking lot of O-YA. Mayor Watson, Councillor Darouze and MP Poilievre joined us for an ‘all youth invited’ pick up game!

Camp ThursdayThursdays in the SummerFun themed activities such as: Sports Mania, Outdoor Laser Tag, MasterChef and Games Day.

Red Cross Babysitting CourseMay & November 2018The Red Cross Babysitting Course teaches youth how to handle emergencies with confidence by providing basic First Aid skills. For many young adolescents, babysitting is their first job and Red Cross courses can help them become real “pros”!

Youth Advisory CommitteeThroughout the YearO-YA’s Youth Advisory Committee had 20 members in 2018 and contributed 784 volunteer hours towards programs and events in Osgoode Ward.

Teen Drop InTues, Thurs & Fri evenings from 5:30 pm - 9 pm (Tuesday / Thursday) or 10 pm (Friday)A safe and welcoming space for local teens to relax, meet friends, socialize and benefit from the mentorship of our Youth Workers.

Ski BusFebruary 11, 2018; Camp Fortune

16 x 16 (Funded in part by City of Ottawa’s Rural Community Building Grant)February 6 - April 3, 201816 x 16 was a brand new program at O-YA that taught youth to make 8 full meals (each with 2 components) by the time they’re 16. Each week, participants created their meals from scratch, and then enjoy them togeth-er for dinner. Some weeks even featured guest chefs! 16 x 16 was inspired (and developed with permission) by Ottawa’s Dr. Yoni Freedhoff (https://www.facebook.com/WeightyMatters/) and his wife who conduct a similar program at home for their own kids.

SJA ConnectMay 17 - June 14, 2018SJA Connect is a new youth health, safety and leadership development program offered by St. John Ambu-lance (SJA). It is designed to give young people ages 13 - 19 opportunities to engage with their community and build skills employers are looking for. Participants can practice essential life and communication skills in a flexible, youth-directed learning environment.

The goal of SJA Connect is to engage and enable young Canadians to improve their health, safety, confidence and competence through health and safety oriented training, volunteer community-based service and lead-ership opportunities.

In May & June 2018, O-YA offered the first 5 topics gave youth a Heritage Certificate. The Heritage Certificate includes: learning about St. John Ambulance in Canada, volunteerism and community service, team dynam-ics, conflict resolution and citizenship.

Extended Teen Summer Drop In HoursTuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays; 2 pm - 9 pm / 10 pm in July and August

Teen Leadership CampAugust 20 - 26, 2018O-YA’s Leadership Camp focuses on teaching the fundamentals of team building and leadership by develop-ing problem solving skills and gaining self confidence in a challenging and positive environment. Participants learned life long skills all in this intensive yet fun learning environment.

Cooking 101October 23 - November 9, 2018Cooking 101 taught youth how to cook 6 meals over 6 weeks from scratch. At the end of the course, youth participants were able to make these meals to feed themselves, or even cook for the whole family. The final evening of Cooking 101 brought the group together to prepare a Roast Turkey Dinner with all the trimmings! O-YA’s Youth Advisory Committee choose meals that Cooking 101 participants made.

Community Events

Learn To Run a 5KMarch 6 - May 8, 2018Learn To Run taught a group of community residents (youth and adults) how to get from ‘couch to 5K’. Learn To Run will was hosted by community volunteers (and seasoned runners) Linda Panich Langlois, Mary Blaney and Matt Nesrallah. Hosts shared running tips from their own experience, but focused on warm up, stretches, strides and actually running.

The ‘Goode RunSaturday, May 12, 2018The 2018 ‘Goode Run in support of the Osgoode Youth Association was a huge success! We hosted 407 runners (230 in the 2K ‘Paws on Main’ Family Run / Walk, 166 in the 5K and 11 in the Director’s Challenge). O-YA also had the invaluable support of 75 fabulous community volunteers! Key volunteers included Kris-tin Strackerjan & Samantha Doyon as Race Directors, Matt Nesrallah as Director of Course Logistics, Megan Brooks as Volunteer Director, Lynne Whitehead as Prize Coordinator and Linda Panich as Director. We are so thankful for all of your support. The ‘Goode Run is O-YA’s biggest fundraiser of the year. We simply couldn’t exist without the money this event raises.

Summer Block Party; 2nd AnnualSaturday, June 9, 2018Organized by teens from O-YA’s Youth Advisory Committee. Henna tattoos, Caricature artists, Hippo in the Bathtub, Laser Tag, Councillor Darouze BBQ, Fries For Charity, Sidewalk Chalk Competition, International Baking Contest, Tarot Cards & Psychic Readings, Kevin Smith Strolling Magic and the OTHS Jazz Band.

Escape Rooms at O-YA (In cooperation with NROCRC and CDF)April & October, 2018Organized by teens from O-YA’s Youth Advisory Committee.

Haunted Orchard at Log Cabin Apple OrchardOctober 2018The first of what we hope will be a growing annual event! Presented in partnership between Log Cabin Apple Orchard and O-YA. Planned, organized and staffed by teens from O-YA’s Youth Advisory Committee and other youth volunteers. Guests took a spooky wagon ride through Log Cabin Orchard at night; weekends in Octo-ber. Lots of terrors along the way made for the most horrifying journey they’ll ever take through an Orchard!

Lebanese Cooking EventFriday, October 27, 2018Youth and adults spent a fun evening at O-YA learning to make homemade Lebanese Garlic Sauce (Toum), Fatoosh Salad and Lebanese sandwiches with roast chicken and veggies. Our hosts were Osgoode Ward Councillor George Darouze and Tracey Nesrallah. We had a cooking demonstration, made food and enjoyed a family style supper together.

Hot Cocoa Before the Santa Clause Parade (Sponsored by NROCRC and CDF)Friday, December 7, 2018Organized by teens from O-YA’s Youth Advisory Committee as part of Osgoode’s Christmas in The Village festivities, O-YA hosted a Hot Cocoa event before the Santa Claus Parade and decorating gingerbread men and making ornaments after the parade.
