MISSION STATEMENTThe Mission of The Muskingum County Community Foundation is to improve quality of life in the community by nurturing opportunities and serving needs through collaboration and philanthropy.

The Envisioned Future of The Muskingum County Community Foundation is that Muskingum County’s quality of life attracts organizations and people to pursue their dreams and practice their passions.

VISION STATEMENT

HISTORY OF MCCFIn 1985, area civic leaders established the Zanesville Development Corporation to generate ideas that would enhance the quality of life in Zanesville. One of the group’s suggestions was to establish a community foundation. The Zanesville Foundation was incorporated in 1985 and awarded tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service in January 1986. The Zanesville Foundation took the name “Muskingum County Community Foundation” in 1988 to reflect a broader mission of serving the entire county. In 2000, MCCF established Scholarship Central to increase access to higher education in Muskingum County by providing students, parents and residents a one-stop for information about colleges and universities, scholarships, and financial aid opportunities. Since its founding, MCCF has awarded more than $18 million to local charities and currently has over $25 million in assets.

I am pleased to release The Muskingum County Community Foundation’s 2018 Annual Report.

In 2018 we continued to transform our plans for the Foundation into action. We expanded the staff by hiring Randy Cochrane to be our first Development Director on staff, we increased our outreach to past supporters of MCCF while engaging new friends, and we continued to build our collaborative relationship with other community organizations and groups. All with the focus of improving Muskingum County.

We wanted to feature some stories of our success in this year’s report. From the first

Zanesville City Half Marathon, to learning about our Spring Grants winners, to understating the history of one of our scholarships, the same theme runs through them all: improving our community. We also feature some of the people who make a difference in Muskingum County as we celebrate their philanthropic success during our 2018 Groundhog Day event.

The word COMMUNITY is in our name for a reason, we serve everyone in Muskingum County. If you ever need something, have an idea or just want to visit, please feel free to stop by the office at 534 Putnam Ave. or visit us online at www.mccf.org. Once again, thank you for supporting us in 2018. We look forward to working with you in 2019 and beyond.

Sincerely,

Brian Wagner Chief Executive OfficerMuskingum County Community Foundation

ZANESVILLE HALF MARATHON 2018

nearly 550 attendees participated in the first ever Zanesville City Half Marathon. The half marathon covered over 13 miles of Zanesville streets, going as far north as the Zanesville Country Club and as far south as the fire department on Eppley Street. Gary Sines, Columbus, was the first to cross the finish line and placed first in male overall. Meredith Kessler, Westerville, placed first in female overall. A 5k and 1-mile fun run were alternative races for attendees who still wanted to be involved without covering the entire course. MCCF’s Wellness and Recreation Cornerstone Committee created and hosted the event. Hanna Luburgh-Agin, race director and cornerstone committee member, was happy with the turnout. “People have just been standing along, cheering everybody on. It’s just been electric, really. “ Luburgh-Agin said. “It’s awesome. That’s what it was about. It was about bringing people downtown, bringing people to the landing.” Proceeds benefited a variety of community projects through the Wellness and Recreation Cornerstone.

“His favorite family activity was going out to our cabin,” Beth Hickman, Grant’s mother, recalled. The Hickman family spent their Fourth of July weekends fishing, swimming, and enjoying each other’s company. Grant wasn’t one to spend much time indoors.

“He’d play some video games, but if it was nice outside, he went outside,” said Bret Hickman, Grant’s father. And Grant did almost everything outside. Being a very active kid, he played nearly every sport he could, but his favorites were soccer and skateboarding. As high school approached, his attention turned to football. “In between his eighth-grade year and his freshman year, he was really focusing on football.” said Bret.

Then, on July 16, 2011, 14-year-old Grant Hickman died in his sleep at a friend’s home. His unexpected death shocked the community. In the face of tragedy, close friends of the Hickman’s came forward to help the family overcome the initial waves of grief after Grant passed. “They were there [with] unbelievable support,” the Hickmans said as they thought back to summer 2011. “Grant’s friends were always coming over to the house,” said Bret, adding that those same friends continued visiting their home for several years until they graduated high school. Grant would have graduated in 2015. “People move on, and they’re busy, but we still get in contact.”

The Hickmans wanted to find a way to keep their son’s memory alive. “I was talking with Grant’s friend’s mom, and I had said something,” Beth recalled. “I just didn’t want him to be forgotten.”

That friend’s mom, Caren Maniaci, suggested putting together a memorial run to celebrate Grant, because of how much he loved to run. Maniaci took care of organizing the run, taking registrations, and making the first Run 4 Grant 5k in 2012 possible. They never dreamed of how big this “little run” would become. “The first year we had 615 or 620 [runners],” said Bret. He could not believe how many people came to the first run and how much support the family received.

Then came the question: what to do with the money raised from the run? That’s when the Hickmans teamed with the Muskingum County Community Foundation to create a

scholarship in memory of Grant, using the funds raised from the 5k. After the first run, MCCF took over handling the registration process to give the Hickmans and Karen Maniaci some relief.

While the number of participants dwindled over the years, the support for the Hickman family remained strong. The final Run 4 Grant took place in May 2018. Several factors were put into this decision: Grant’s classmates had long since graduated, and the Hickman’s didn’t want to wear out their welcome by continuing to collect items for the silent auction and ask for sponsors.

FROM GRIEF TO GREATER GOOD:THE GRANT HICKMAN SCHOLARSHIP

Grant Hickman was the boy next door. He was a son, a brother, and a friend to anybody.

Page 19: 2018 ANNUAL REPORT · 2019. 5. 13. · Mia Hafer Abby Lutz Stevey Willey This program is made possible, in part, by the United Way of Muskingum, Perry, and Morgan Counties. Rebecca

“The community has been overwhelmingly supportive,” said Beth. “But maybe they’d want to go somewhere else [for sponsoring], and we could stop while we were good.”

The proceeds from each run helped to establish the Grant Hickman Foundation, which is now a sustaining fund to award scholarships every year. Since its establishment in 2013, the Grant Hickman Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to nearly 60 Muskingum County high school graduates. The Hickman Scholarship has also risen to be one of the most popular scholarships for seniors to apply for every year, with over 70 to 80 applications submitted. The most important part of the application is the essay, which is reviewed blindly by the selection committee. The essay serves as a look into the intentions and moral compass of the applicant.

“He had a pure heart,” said Beth, adding that Grant had friends in several of the local school districts, and not just his home district of Zanesville City Schools. “He would never want to hurt anybody,” said Bret. “He always wanted to try and help them or guide them in the right way. If he would have made it through that night, I think he definitely would have been one who would have done [the right things] throughout his high school career.”

The Hickmans take pride in knowing Grant is still in the hearts and minds of the community because of his scholarship legacy with the Foundation. “A lot of people that were truly close to him will always remember him,” said Bret. “[It’s] keeping his memory alive,” Beth agreed. “It keeps people talking about him, which is good.”

In addition to the scholarship, the Hickmans see other reminders of their son throughout the community. Beth had recently seen a bumper sticker made by one of Grant’s friends with the inscription: “Skate on in Heaven.” As for another Run 4 Grant, the Hickmans are open to the possibility of putting together another race. They are looking ahead to possibly having a race at his son’s 10-year class reunion, which would not happen until 2025. It is their hope that Grant’s old classmates, and several other friends, would be home and eager to run together again.

From grief to greater good, the Hickmans are forever thankful for the support the community has given and continues to give.
