活動報告–1:ごあいさつ Greetings 1

1 ごあいさつ Greetings

A new research center, Research and Development Center for Five-Sense Devices, was established on the1st of November, 2018, in Kyushu University. The activities of this research center are closely related to ouractivities. ReCAPS thus decided to keep a firm collaboration with it. We will continue our present activities, especially organizing small and big seminars, but we will have a new frontier to work for society with thiscollaboration. Some members of ReCAPS also belong to the Research and Development Center for Five-SenseDevices.

In order to prepare for the establishment of this new research center, ReCAPS organized the third Interna-tional Five-Sense Symposium (organized by Hiroyuki Ito) in Ohashi Campus in September. This conferencewas considered as an extension of the 9th IEEE International Conference on Awareness Science and Technology(iCAST 2018; chaired by Hideyuki Takagi).

Another occasion in which we worked with people from outside was “Joint Seminar of ‘RIKEN Seminar onNew Horizons in Sensory Physiology’ and ‘41st Perceptual Frontier Seminar: Dynamic Processes in Percep-tion’,” (organized by Hiroshige Takeichi and Kazuo Ueda) in August. Fiscal year 2018 was a period for us tobuild a new framework in which ReCAPS can contribute to activate relationships between Kyushu Universityand other institutions. It is also to be noticed that five members of ReCAPS, including myself, visited threeuniversities in Dalian, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Dalian University of Technology, and LiaoningNormal University, in March. It is my great pleasure that we have a few new Chinese students as a result. Weare aiming at visiting foreign places and receiving foreign colleagues and students in a casual manner like this.

Finally, this will be my last message for an Annual Report of ReCAPS. Thank you very much for supportingus! Each member of ReCAPS has their own position somewhere else in Kyushu University, but the six an-nual reports we have released clearly show that we have worked together to achieve something real—to sharefrontiers of perceptual research. I hope a more attractive annual report will be released next year.

1. Method of image feature extraction using motion information in natural movies and its application tooptical flow estimationWataru SUZUKI*, Noritaka ICHINOHE*, Hiroshige TAKEICHI***Department of Ultrastructural Research, National Institute of Neuroscience, NCNP, **ComputationalEngineering Applications Unit, R&D Group, Head Office for Information Systems and Cybersecurity,RIKEN

2. The oscillating potential model of visually induced vectionTakeharu SENO**Kyushu University, ReCAPS

A new model of responding to visually induced vection was developed. First, a mathematical modelwas constructed based on well-documented characteristics of vection and human behavioural responsesto this illusion. Then 10,000 virtual trial simulations using this Oscillating Potential Vection Model(OPVM) were conducted and the OPVM output was found to compare favorably to the empiricallyobtained vection data.

3. Perceptual restoration of interrupted speech and interrupted locally time-reversed speechKazuo UEDA*,**, Nozomi INUI*, Kaisei SHIRAKI*, Valter CIOCCA***, YoshitakaNAKAJIMA*,**, and Gerard B. REMIJN*,***Kyushu University, **ReCAPS, ***The University of British Columbia

The effects of periodical interruption with silence or noise on intelligibility of speech and locallytime-reversed speech in Japanese sentences were investigated. A pilot experiment was conducted witheight to ten Japanese normal-hearing participants, using stimuli that were interrupted with 20-120 or20-220 ms segments. The results showed that noise insertion improved intelligibility in both interruptedspeech and interrupted locally-time reversed speech with intense noise; however, with less intense noise, only the intelligibility of interrupted locally-time reversed speech improved by the noise insertion.

4. Intelligibility of English mosaic speech: Influence of manipulating mosaic block durationSanti*, Yoshitaka NAKAJIMA**, Kazuo UEDA**, Gerard B. REMIJN***Graduate School of Design, Department of Human Science, Kyushu University, **Department ofHuman Science/ReCAPS, Kyushu University

The main purpose of this study is to observe the influence of manipulating mosaic-block duration(20–320 ms) on the intelligibility of mosaic speech. The original speech samples were transformed into

6

mosaic by dividing the spectrogram of speech signal into blocks and after that averaging the soundenergy density within each block of spectrogram period. The results of two pilot experiments showedthat the intelligibility was higher than 50% when mosaic-block duration ranged from 20-80 ms, anddecreased for larger duration.

1. Personal constructs for design: The evaluation grid method and the image grid methodNaoyuki OI* and Hironobu TAKAHASHI***Kyushu University/ReCAPS, **Kumamoto Prefectural University

The present investigation focuses on developing the image grid method to clarify the concept of“health” and “healthy environment,” based on the repertory grid test and the evaluation grid method, which have been used for eliciting personal constructs from participants. 6 categories of constructs forhealthy environment, i.e., physical exercise, dining, bath, hobby and relaxation, sleep, and positivethinking were successfully extracted. It was revealed that the personal constructs consisted of at least 3aspects, human relationship, evaluation of a specific environment, and preferable behavior settings for aconcept, and that a suitable object should be specified for each method.

2. A Preliminary Study of Grid Densities for Visual Password FormatsYesaya Tommy PAULUS*, HERLINA**, Khairu Zeta LENI***, Chihiro HIRAMATSU****, GerardB. REMIJN*****Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, **Faculty of InformationTechnology, Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia, ***Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute ofTechnology, Indonesia, ****Department of Human Science/Research Center for Applied PerceptualScience, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan

Participant judgments (n = 27) were obtained about what grid densities could be potentially useful andsafe for the formation of visual passwords on a screen. Sixteen grid densities, ranging from 2×2 to7×7 cells (rows-by-columns), were used for three visual password formats (i.e., an alphanumeric, a

pattern, and a picture format). The preliminary judgments suggest that grid densities ranging from 3×3to 6×6 cells could be useful for visual password formation and authentication using eye tracking.

3. The perception of auditory icons by Japanese driversJoao P. CABRAL* and Gerard B. REMIJN ***Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, **Department of HumanScience/Research Center for Applied Perceptual Science, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan

Auditory icons are short, one-shot sound messages that need to convey accurate information about anevent or situation. Utilizing automotive/traffic related auditory icons previously studied in Europe andthe USA, a study on the perception of auditory icons by Japanese drivers was conducted. The resultsshow that ubiquitous sounds (bells, sirens, and voices) were most of the time interpreted similarly byparticipants, but less well-known icons were described by a larger variety of words.

1. Time-shrinking illusion in the tactile modality: Modality independent brain region for time perceptionTakako MITSUDO**Kyushu University/JSPS

It has been reported that ’Time-shrinking illusion’ occurs not only in auditory but in tactile modality.Using magnetoencephalography, we observed brain responses while participants engaged in tactiletemporal judgment task, that causes time-shrinking illusion, by stimulating the left thumb.Time-shrinking illusion actually occurred in the behavioral response. In addition, temporal judgment ledto increased activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus and the supplementary motor area. Modalitydependent/independent brain mechanism for time perception would be discussed.

2. Interaction among binocular disparity, motion parallax, and pictorial depth cues in perceiving largedepth

To examine the interaction among binocular disparity, motion parallax, and pictorial depth cues inperceiving large depth, apparent depth was quantified when either of these cues was given in isolation ormultiple cues were available simultaneously. Substantial interaction between binocular disparity andmotion parallax was found, however, perceived depth was much less than geometrical prediction whenrandom-dot pattern was used. It appears that pictorial cues are crucial to see large depth in natural scene.

3. Irrelevant speech effects with locally time-reversed speech: Language familiarityKazuo UEDA*, Yoshitaka NAKAJIMA*, Florian KATTNER**, and Wolfgang ELLERMEIER***Kyushu University/ReCAPS, **Technische Universitat Darmstadt

To disentangle the contributions of local and global temporal features of irrelevant speech in one’s nativeand a non-native language, locally time-reversed speech was employed in the irrelevant speech (ISE)paradigm. ISE experiments were performed with German native listeners (n = 79) and with Japanesenative listeners (n = 81), employing both German and Japanese speech with either sample. The resultsshowed that the irrelevant sound effect worked differently for one’s native and non-native languages.

4. Dynamic processing of visual information in the retinaMasao TACHIBANA**Ritsumeikan University

Although the whole retinal image is always in motion by eye, head, and body movements, we do notfully understand how the retina processes global motion images. Applying electro-physiologicaltechniques to the goldfish isolated retina, we recorded the response of ganglion cells (GCs) to a movingtarget accompanied the global motion, which simulated a saccade following a period of fixational eyemovements. Detailed analyses revealed that the moving target modulated the receptive filed propertiesand evoked synchronized and correlated firing among local clusters of the specific GC subtypes, providing a novel concept for retinal information processing of global motion images during eyemovements.

1. 16:05–16:30 A spectral-change factor related to sonority makes noise-vocoded Japanese speechintelligibleTakuya KISHIDA*, Yoshitaka NAKAJIMA**, Kazuo UEDA**, Gerard B. REMIJN**, and SeiyaUMEMOTO****Department of Human Science, Kyushu University, **Department of Human Science/ReCAPS,Kyushu University, ***21st Century Program, Kyushu University

This study investigated the effects of factor elimination on the intelligibility of noise-vocoded Japanesespeech. Stimuli were resynthesized from spectral-change factors obtained from 20-critical-band powerfluctuations of running speech, by using origin-shifted principal component analysis followed byvarimax rotation. Sixteen native speakers of Japanese listened to noise-vocoded speech resynthesizedfrom factors obtained in 2-, 3-, and 4-factor analyses, and reported what they heard. The results showedthat eliminating a factor around 500–1500 Hz, highly correlated with sonority, resulted in lower moraidentification as compared to conditions where this factor was not eliminated whilst the total number offactors was the same. When the number of factors was 2, however, mora identification was relativelylow (around 30%) even when this “sonority” factor was used. The results indicate that 1) using 3 ormore factors and 2) using the “sonority” factor are necessary requirements for synthesizing intelligiblenoise-vocoded speech from spectral-change factors.

2. 16:30–16:45 Multivariate acoustic analysis of initial consonant clusters in EnglishYixin ZHANG*, Yoshitaka NAKAJIMA**, Xiaoyang YU*, Kazuo UEDA**, Takuya KISHIDA***,Gerard B. REMIJN**, Sophia ARNDT****, and Mark A. ELLIOTT*****Human Science Course, Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, **Department of HumanScience/ReCAPS, Kyushu University, ***Department of Human Science, Kyushu University,****School of Psychology, National University of Ireland, Galway

Two-consonant clusters at the initial positions of English syllables were analyzed together with thefollowing vowels in terms of spectral changes. In a 3-factor analysis, a factor closely related tofrequency components in a range around 1100 Hz and another factor related to components near orabove 3300 Hz appeared. These two factors were exclusive. In the consonant clusters, the factor scoreof either of them changed in one direction.

3. 16:45–17:00 An acoustic analysis of preposition phrases in EnglishXiaoyang YU*, Yoshitaka NAKAJIMA**, Yixin ZAHANG*, Takuya KISHIDA***, and KazuoUEDA***Human Science Course, Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, **Department of HumanScience/ReCAPS, Kyushu University, ***Department of Human Science, Kyushu University

The present study was on how spectral-change factors behave in English preposition phrases consistingof prepositions and noun phrases. Spectral changes of spoken English sentences in our new databasewere subjected to origin-shifted factor analysis. One of the factors was related to a frequency rangeabove 3300 Hz, and its factor scores tended to be higher in the noun phrases than in the prepositions.Frequency components above 3300 Hz may play important roles to clarify noun phrases perceptually.

5. 17:25–17:40 Effect of sound on memorization of visual imagesNatalia POSTNOVA*, Shin-ichiro IWAMIYA**, and Gerard B. REMIJN****Human Science Course, Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, **Department ofCommunication Design Science, Kyushu University, ***Department of Human Science/ReCAPS,Kyushu University

A series of experiments on the effect of sound on memorization of visual images had been conducted. Our recent experiment replicated and confirmed the previous findings (Postnova & Iwamiya, 2017)under more controlled conditions. The experiment consisted of a memory-span test, in which sequencesof black-and-white visual images were presented under three different conditions. When half of theimages was accompanied by the sound, the number of correctly recalled images was significantly higher(p < 0.01) with sound than without sound.

6. 17:40–18:05 Principal component analysis of public speaking performance by English native speakersYuko YAMASHITA**Shibaura Institute of Technology

The aim of the present study was to quantitatively explore the characteristics of English-language publicspeaking. Fifteen native speakers of English studying at a university in Ireland participated in the study. They read aloud two scripts to a small audience while being audio-recorded. Their speech rate, durationof speech pauses, duration of speech units, the coefficient of variation of speech pauses were obtained asobjective indexes. The results will be discussed in the talk.

Antedating of Visual Experiences after Eye BlinksTakuya Kishida**Kyushu UniversityVisual experiences continue across eye blinks despite lacking visual information for more than onehundred milliseconds. We measured the perceived timing of visual stimuli which physically inputtedafter voluntarily eye blinking, by an audio-visual temporal order judgement task. Present resultssuggested that perceptual timing of a visual event antedates when observers see the visual eventimmediately after their eye blink.

3. A study on sound development of Japanese-learning infantsEmi Shibato**Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University.

In the present study, we investigate when canonical babbling starts and what kind of speech sounds arearticulated by using an auditory method. To examine this issue, we used the sounds of 3, 8, and 12months of five Japanese-learning infants.

4. A Factor Analysis of Phonetic Category BoundariesXiaoyang Yu**Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University.

The present study was on how spectral-change factors behave in phonetic category boundaries. Fourfactors representing the acoustic characteristics of English speech appeared. The internal structure of phonetic category boundaries might be clarified by the spatial distribution of the factor scores.
