Tax Information Required for Verification

Follow These Steps to Utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to Transfer IRS Tax Data into the FAFSA 1. Go to www.fafsa.gov and Login. 2. Enter student information and click Next. Review and Accept Disclaimer. 3. Click Make FAFSA Corrections if the FAFSA has previously been submitted. 4. Enter FSA ID, create Save Key, and click Next. 5. Click on Financial Information (located in the top menu navigation bar). • For students who provide parent financial information on the FAFSA, the Parent Financial Information is displayed. 6. Select Already Completed if the parent 2016 IRS income tax return has already been completed and submitted. 7. Answer the remaining questions. 8. Click the LINK TO IRS button. On the “Leaving FAFSA on the Web” page, enter the parent FSA ID, then click PROCEED TO IRS SITE. 9. Click OK to enter the IRS system. 10. Once on the IRS website, enter the requested information. 11. Click Submit when requested information has been entered exactly how it appears on the IRS income tax return. • If the IRS is able to validate your identification, the confirmation of 2016 Federal Income Tax Information displays. 12. Select the Transfer My Tax Information into the FAFSA check box and click Transfer Now. 13. Once you return to the FAFSA, you will see a confirmation that You have successfully transferred your 2016 IRS tax information. Then

complete the Parent Financial Information sections. 14. If the student has already completed and submitted a 2016 IRS Income Tax Return, proceed to the Student Tax Information section under

Financial Information (located in the top menu navigation bar). • Repeat steps 6-13 to retrieve the student tax information. 15. Click on Sign & Submit in the top menu navigation bar after the student tax information is transferred into the FAFSA. 16. Proceed with signing and submitting the FAFSA. 17. Click on SUBMIT MY FAFSA NOW. A confirmation number displays to verify submission.If you have any issues, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.

Can’t Utilize IRS DRT through FAFSA?If you are unable to successfully utilize the IRS DRT through the initial FAFSA filing or through the FAFSA Web Correction process, you MUST submit an IRS Tax Return Transcript. This option will slow down the verification process.For detailed information on obtaining the following documents from the IRS: • Tax Return Transcripts • Verification of Nonfiling • Wage and Income TranscriptsPlease refer to: www.jccc.edu/admissions/financial-aid/obtain-tax.html.

Individuals Who Filed an Amended IRS Income Tax ReturnAn individual who filed an amended IRS income tax return for tax year 2016 must provide: • A 2016 IRS Tax Return Transcript (that will only include information from the original tax return and does not have to be signed), or any other

IRS tax transcript(s) that includes all of the income and tax information required to be verified; and • A signed copy of the 2016 IRS Form 1040X, “Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,” that was filed with the IRS.You may be required to have the documents stamped by the IRS.

Individuals Granted a Filing Extension by the IRSAn individual who is required to file a 2016 IRS income tax return and has been granted a filing extension by the IRS beyond the automatic six-month extension for tax year 2016, must provide: • A copy of IRS Form 4868, ‘‘Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,’’ that was filed with the IRS

for tax year 2016. • A copy of the IRS’s approval of an extension beyond the automatic six-month extension for tax year 2016. • Verification of Nonfiling Letter (confirmation that the tax return has not yet been filed) from the IRS or other relevant tax authority dated on or

after October 1, 2017. • A copy of IRS Form W–2 for each source of employment income received or an equivalent document for tax year 2016 and, • If self-employed, a signed statement certifying the amount of the individual’s Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and the U.S. income tax paid for tax

year 2016. • When your taxes are filed, you must then provide copies of your original IRS Tax Return Transcript.

Individuals Who Were Victims of IRS Identify TheftAn individual who was the victim of IRS tax-related identity theft must provide: • A Tax Return DataBase View (TRDBV) transcript obtained from the IRS, or any other IRS tax transcript(s) that includes all of the income and tax

information required to be verified; and • A statement signed and dated by the tax filer indicating that he or she was a victim of IRS tax-related identity theft and that the IRS is aware of
