orrowing from Joan Garry’s work, Because Nonprofits are Messy (@Joan Garry Consulting) there are

five pillars of a thriving nonprofit; People, Money, Programs, Narrative and Strategy. As your President and CEO, I’m excited to share with you that we have positive trends in all five areas; thank you for your support and for your belief in the mission of our work. People. The LEAD Brevard board of directors is diverse in skills and reflects the Leadership Brevard alumni and the community we serve with a strong leadership pipeline and bench strength. Money. The organization closed a funding gap during the last two fiscal years and is poised to end YE 2019 with a small surplus while budgeting for modest growth in YE 2020. Programs.Leadership Brevard is trending toward the 4th year of a full cohort of 60 with a waiting list before the end of the current fiscal year in May and the inaugural Leadership EssentialsSM program exceeded expectations in this first year. The membership roster grew exponentially to represent over $23,000 in membership contributions. The 15th annual 4 Under 40 Leadership Awards recognized another group of Top 12 finalists in 2019 and the final 4 Under 40 to celebrate! Narrative.LEAD Brevard has a clear voice via targeted emails and the monthly newsletter and works to make sure we have a strong presence on social media platforms.

Brevard initiated its first new program in years with Leadership EssentialsSM to further enhance our portfolio of offerings to identify, nurture and strengthen Brevard’s next generation of leaders. Together, through the staff, the Board, and most importantly the program participants and alumni, LEAD Brevard has expanded its reach, influence and visibility throughout the Space Coast.

Our favorable profile is emerging as a source of encouragement within this community as something we can all take pride in. But I believe our most important and enduring contribution to the community we call home is not as readily apparent. What inspires me is knowing the countless graduates of our programs are finding their way into community service programs, on Boards of Directors for any number of nonprofit organizations and in many other ways that are the foundation of a bright future for the Space Coast.

As the current Chairman of the Board, it has been an honor to follow Josh Field who left LEAD Brevard strong, engaged and moving forward. In FYE 2021 Chris Kern will assume the Chairmanship and with a vibrant and refreshed board we are committed to entrusting to her an organization no less well positioned for the future. It is this talent and commitment as represented by both of these two, which exemplifies what LEAD Brevard is all about.

I can’t tell you how humbled I am for this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Leadership Brevard 1986

development conversation; looking to 2020, the board will measure programs against an outcomes matrix and has created a task force to review all programs’ ‘profit and loss’ as data and ROI.

leadership laboratory, Leadership Action Projects are a key component of each Leadership Brevard class. In 2019, eight projects, collaborations between class of 2019 and their nonprofit partners contributed over 2600 volunteer hours representing $66,118 (based on Value of Volunteer Time of data released April 11, 2019 by the Independent Sector) in

economic impact and solutions to challenges in our community.

Brevard Achievement Center“Creative Solutions to Improve Recruiting ofPotential Employees with Qualified Disabilities”The team worked to create a dependable method of reaching and recruiting a robust pool of individuals with disabilities (IWD) to fill all current open positions in a timely manner. One of Brevard Achievement Center’s key strategic growth goals is to double employment outcomes for IWD from 2017-2021; which means employment for 1,702 persons with disabilities.

Brevard County Emergency Management“Business & Industry Emergency SupportFunction Coordination”Brevard County Emergency Management uses the Emergency Support Function (ESF) model as the primary mechanism for organizing preparedness for, response to, and recovery from the various threats and hazards that may affect our community. The purpose of ESF-18 (Business & Industry) is to coordinate actions that will provide assistance to the needs of business, industry and economic stabilization, and enhance the community’s ability to restore business operations as quickly as possible. This project created a coalition of business networks, developed connectivity among those networks and the Emergency Management department, and provides a conduit for information-sharing in both daily and emergency situations.

Brevard Family Partnership “Foster a Future for Brevard’s Youth”The team helped Brevard Family Partnership (BFP) to increase the number of quality foster homes by raising awareness of the need for foster families within the community by creating and executing a marketing and outreach campaign designed to educate the public and create solutions to aid in filling this need. They worked in conjunction with BFP staff to identify specific targeted audiences and create an outreach plan to effectively communicate the need to the intended audiences.

Brevard Schools Foundation“Mentoring Hope in Tomorrow’s Leaders”Brevard Schools Foundation is creating a mentor recruitment campaign to increase community awareness of this program, and grow the number of mentors to pair with low-income, at-risk middle and high school students and help keep them on the path to graduation and post-secondary education. This campaign included shooting, editing and producing a video that gives viewers an overview of the type of impact having a consistent and supporting mentor has on the lives of these youth.

Cocoa Beach Main Street Inc.“Creating an Environmentally Sustainable Downtown”Cocoa Beach Main Street is part of a statewide and national network of revitalization programs. The project team created a strategic plan and implemented a conservation program centered on downtown businesses. The goal is two-fold: encouraging the use of reusable serve ware and packaging as well as beginning a downtown business recycling program.

Family Promise of Brevard“The Face of Family Homelessness”This project created and launched an awareness campaign, inspiring a call to action to end family homelessness in Brevard. This campaign ultimately included a video, billboards, television, radio and other collateral materials for public advertising and awareness to move our community to action. Project participants met with families who are experiencing homelessness, and major stakeholders like service providers, landlords, healthcare providers, law enforcement and educators to create the concept and narrative for the campaign.

Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County“Women Build: Coming Together to Build Stronger,Safer Communities in Brevard County.”The project team wrote, shot, produced, and edited a 2 minute video highlighting the opportunity in Brevard County to volunteer with Women Build and Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity will use the video for their website, social media and as part of community presentations.

LEAD Brevard with The Board Doctor, LLC“IMPACT Brevard, powered by LEAD BrevardMatching Leadership Brevard Alumni with Nonprofit Organizations Needing Skilled Board Members.” Phase II IMPACT Brevard is an online system to match nonprofit organizations in Brevard County with Leadership Brevard alumni and others who are willing and ready to serve on a board of directors. Phase II includes recruiting potential board members among the ranks of alumni as well as the Class of 2019 and completing profiles online on the beta site; creating board governance training workshops as a business model and facilitating initial matches, introducing nonprofit organizations to potential board members.

ew in 2019, Leadership EssentialsSM powered by LEAD Brevard offered a new leadership training resource for our community; leadership skills development targeted to the ‘high potential professionals’ in any industry on a path to leadership and/or management roles. The new program meets a need for ‘soft skills training’ and is a complement to

the community based flagship program Leadership Brevard.

The Leadership EssentialsSM experience is valuable to high potential professionals and their employers for a variety of reasons, including:

The relationships developed within the diverse cohort of professionals in attendance

An assessment tool, used as a foundational piece

A connection to LEAD Brevard, Leadership Brevard (program and alumni) and Brevard County

An emphasis on practical experience and application; the ‘tools’ that participants add to their leadership

toolbox as part of their career development.

n 2017, the LEAD Brevard Board of Directors unanimously adopted a position to renounce $40,000 in county funding to mitigate the cuts

to other organizations so they might continue their efforts to serve. Subsequently, YE 2018 saw a 50% reduction in those funds awarded previously to LEAD Brevard and YE 2019 was the first full fiscal year without any of that revenue.

LEAD Brevard increased efforts to sustain the organization independently and you responded to our requests for engagement to contribute to sustain your community leadership programs and events that addressed the revenue gap. We’ve closed the gap YE 2019 and are budgeted for modest growth in YE 2020. Thank you for your support.
