[Cover by Nathan] Annual Report2018 - 2019
Dear Cardinal Ritter Supporters,
The 2018-2019 school year was another outstanding year. Our students celebrated so many successes, academic, as well as athletic. In the fall of 2018, we announced our Capital Campaign, “Give Love Learn” to support the construction of a new entrance to the school and add additional classroom space. When completed, the entrance will enhance the security to the building as well as provide much needed space for students.
As the year unfolded, we saw that Cardinal Ritter received an “A” rating from the State of Indiana. Other academic accomplishments followed. The athletic accomplishments were many, including our soccer team advancing to the state game and over 13 of our senior student athletes signing to further their education at various universities. Our 2019 seniors graduated, amassing over $14 million dollars in merit-based college scholarships. Led by our Catholic Identity and Franciscan Values, Cardinal Ritter continues to grow and improve in order to better prepare our students to be successful and productive in the future.
Thank you to our Board of Directors for their guidance and to our parents who have shared their resources with us in order to enhance the experience for all of our Raiders. Thank you to our alumni and friends who again prayerfully and financially support the mission of this Catholic school.
God Bless,E. Jo HoyPresident

Cardinal Ritter Prayer
O Lord Jesus Christ, who in thy mercy hears the prayers of all people, we beseech thee all grace and blessing on our Cardinal Ritter school community and family.
O Lord Jesus, grant that we may share your word, be of service to others, and love as you loved.
We thank You O Lord, for the many blessings bestowed upon the Cardinal Ritter family and implore that we may continue to fulfill the mission of justice begun by our namesake, your servant, Cardinal Joseph Ritter. And may we always embody his motto, “Miles Christi Sum,”

School History
Cardinal Ritter High School opened its doors in 1964, thus beginning its rich tradition of diversity and spirituality. This west side Catholic school was named after Cardinal Joseph E. Ritter. Born in 1892 and ordained a priest in 1917, Cardinal Ritter became best known for his work in desegregation. In 1938, he ordered all of the Catholic schools in the diocese to integrate, a full sixteen years before the Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education. He was appointed the first Archbishop
of Indianapolis in 1944. Just two years later he was appointed Archbishop of St. Louis.
Building on the values exemplified in the life of Cardinal Joseph Ritter, Cardinal Ritter High School has always been dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of students and fostering within them the values that Cardinal Ritter stood for throughout his life. He possessed a love for God and His Church, a belief in social justice and service to others, and the will to hold each student to the
highest standards of excellence and achievement.

Dear Cardinal Ritter Friends and Families,
It has been my pleasure to serve on the West Deanery Unified Catholic Schools Board of Directors which oversees St. Michael-St. Gabriel Archangels Elementary School and Cardinal Ritter High School. This board looks to identify the individual needs at these schools while cultivating the connection between them. We remain focused on our Franciscan values: Dignity of the Individual, Peace and Justice, Reconciliation, and Responsible Stewardship. The members of the West Deanery Unified Catholic Schools Board of Directors act as ambassadors between the schools, west deanery parishes, and the greater Indianapolis community. As board participants, we are privileged to serve such an engaged student body and devoted faculty and staff.
I am a proud graduate of Cardinal Ritter High School. The academic lessons from being a Cardinal Ritter student laid the foundation for my education. Beyond academics, it shaped me into the person I am today. I began writing for the student newspaper as a sophomore and continued on to major in journalism at Indiana University. I worked as managing editor of the Arbutus yearbook there. After graduating, I taught middle school journalism, newspaper, and yearbook for seven years. Now as a faculty member at Ivy Tech Community College I have been the adviser for the campus newspaper for nine years. It has been great turn journalism, something I found a passion for in my time at Cardinal Ritter, into a ribbon weaving through both my education and career.
I work students of all ages and from all walks of life at Ivy Tech Community College. I promote daring to be different with my own students, whether they were sixth graders or senior citizens. This motto has served me well and I think it gives everyone a chance to be themselves. This opportunity is something I cherish from my time as a student at Cardinal Ritter.
Sincerely, Claire Carr Maxson, ‘97WDUCS Board Chair

Each summer, a group of CRHS students and staff members travel overseas to experience different cultures. This past summer, twenty-four students traveled to Ireland, Wales, and England for nine days. While in Ireland, students visited the Blarney Castle and toured the city of Dublin, including the Book of Kells at Trinity College and the Ring of Kerry. After traveling by ferry to Wales for the day, students then visited London for two days. During their time in London, students visited Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and did lots of shopping. Overall, it was a great trip with lots of wonderful sightseeing and even better memories. What a great way for these Raiders to spend part of their break! 11

Alumni
Our alumni are the living history of our school. It is with that thought in mind that the numerous alumni activities were planned throughout the year. From alumni sports competitions – volleyball, girls basketball, and soccer - to the many reunions, Alumni Appreciation Night, Raider Nation O’Celebration, Homecoming, the CRHS Golf Outing, and the always popular – Smarty Party, we have had countless alumni through the doors of CRHS. We also welcomed back the Class of 1969 for their 50th Reunion Celebration in our gym this summer! By offering so many different types of events, we hope to appeal to all of our alumni in one way or another.

Service Learning
16
The 2018-2019 school year was filled with great academics, athletics, school events and much more. One of those is the Cardinal Ritter service department. The service learning team was busy this year working to arrange events for the students to get involved in. Some of those events included the tutoring at Holy Angels, Holy Family Shelter, Little Sisters of the Poor, blanket making, care packages for the homeless, Wheeler Mission, St. Vincent Hospital and the Ritter Dance Marathon. Students were encouraged to complete their service hours within the guidelines of the Corporal Works of Mercy. In the end, students and faculty completed over 12,000 service hours during the 2018-2019 school year. While success was at an all-time high, the service learning team is looking forward to raising the bar and pushing students and faculty to a successful 2019-2020 school year.

GIFTS OF CASHCardinal Ritter receives a large portion of gifts in the form of cash simply because it’s the easiest way to give. Cash gifts are fully deductible within the tax year of which they are given unless the total amount of the gift exceeds 50% of your adjusted income. However, the excess can be carried forward for up to five years and used as a deduction within those years.
GIFTS OF PROPERTYAlmost any type of property has the potential to be a suitable charitable gift. This includes securities, art objects, real estate and other types of personal property. If you own property of which the value has appreciated so that it generates long-term capital gain if sold, you are generally better off donating the property to the school rather than selling it and donating the proceeds. Consult your attorney or tax advisor to find out what is best for your situation.
LIFE INCOME PLANSA donor may wish to make a significant gift to Cardinal Ritter during his/her lifetime but may find it necessary to utilize income from those same assets. With this situation, a life income gift to Cardinal Ritter may be the answer. The basis of this type of gift is that you make an irrevocable contribution of cash or other assets to the school or the Catholic Community Foundation. The school or foundation will act as a trustee for these assets which would allow the school or foundation to invest the assets and pay you an income for the remainder of your life and the life of your spouse or other beneficiary. At the end of these “life interests” the remaining principle will be passed on to the school.
BEQUESTSThe most common type of planned gift is a bequest, which is a provision in your will for a gift to the school. A charitable bequest is fully deductible from your estate and can significantly reduce estate taxes on the balance of your estate. Your bequest to Cardinal Ritter can take the form of a specific bequest, cash or securities, real estate or other property. It can also take the form of a percentage of your total estate.A donor can make a gift to Cardinal Ritter by using a residuary bequest, which is the gift of all or a portion of your estate remaining after the payment of specific bequests, debts, taxes and administrative expenses. You can also make a contingent bequest, which takes effect only if your primary beneficiaries predecease you or are otherwise disqualified as legatees. This type of bequest may work well for younger donors because it does not adversely affect the primary interest of the donor’s spouse, children or other primary beneficiaries. A bequest can be restricted or unrestricted. Due to the changing future needs of the school, donors often make their bequests unrestricted in order to allow the use of funds where they are most needed.
GIVING TO AN ENDOWMENTGifts to an endowment are a permanent investment in Cardinal Ritter’s future. The original value of the gift is multiplied as it generates continuous investment income for the needs of Cardinal Ritter.
TRIBUTES AND MEMORIALSThe memory of a loved one can be recorded as a tribute or memorial gift to Cardinal Ritter High School. The memorial is recognized in the Annual Report and notification of memorial contributions are made as you request.
