PresidentRon Gliot

It appears from the emails I am seeing and talking to Sunburst members most of our Corvettes are put away for the season as winter blew in a bit early. We have a few members who use them year round, and sure hope the selected the option for 4-wheel drive on their factory order!

A small number of our members headed down to Donald Stevens Convention Center to the Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals on 11/17 to have a look at some great hot rods. After a few weak years, this was probably one of the best events I have been to of this yearly show. It was capped off by some of us at Bub City just across from the Convention Center.....of course, food is always a part of our fun, and when you throw breakfast in as we did, you end up with a “2 Fooder”.

Our 2019 Election will be taking place at the December Membership Meeting, and as of this writing all positions were uncontested. Per by-laws, we must still go through the election formality, and the “winners” will be formally announced at the close of the meeting. I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our Election Committee for all of the effort they put forth.

I hope each and every member has signed up for the Holiday Party for 2018 as this is always a great year end closer, chaired by Jean Mumford. The club does subsidize this event as to encourage all to attend and share some holiday cheer as the events are far fewer in winter. Also note that due to the fact Sunburst does not host a January Membership meeting, the past number of years, the club has had a pizza party, totally casual, with no club business. This year the Roberts will be your host for this event on 1/3 at Lou Malnati’s in Lakewood. Like the Holiday Party, I hope each and every one of you can attend.

As of 2019, I will no longer be your President, and with that I would like to thank all members for working with me, towards many successes over the past couple of years. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing this work, and I hope I have served you well. It is a bit bittersweet vacating the position, but I truly believe we need fresh blood/ideas continually to make this club fun and fluid and never stagnate. I would especially like to thank my 2017 and 2018 Board for making this job the past two years as easy as it could be. I believe we always came to great decisions through many ideas and thoughts and having a great Board is a major piece to the puzzle. I will continue on as Past President, to assist and be supportive where ever I can with the new incoming Board.

We are already putting together the events calendar for 2019, so if you have a great idea for an outing of any type, don’t be afraid to step forward...we will help you plan it, if you need assistance.Remember, if you don’t do it this year, you’ll just be one year older when you do!

Save the Wave!!!!

Message from the GovernorDecember 2018

GovernorMike

Stevens

Happy Holidays Sunburst Members,

We're less than a month away from closing the books on a great 2019. I've really enjoyed the opportunity to serve Sunburst as your Governor and link to the National Council of Corvette Clubs. I've learned a good deal this year, especially that there is so much more to learn about all of the intricacies of NCCC rules and benefits.

Pat and I have just returned from the Midwest Regional Governor's meeting and the national Governor's meeting in St. Louis. Here are some of the items covered in those meetings:

• Dale Samuelson, from Northern Illinois CC was elected the President of NCCC.• Windy City Corvette Club garnered enough points to win the Midwest Region

Championship and it was 2nd overall in the nation.• NCCC Scholarships of $1000 will be available again in 2019. Applications will be

available on January 7th.• The 2019 NCCC Convention will be held in Denver from July7th thru the 12th. Watch for

more details in the near future.• The 2020 NCCC Convention will be held in Indianapolis.• There will be 2 new autocrossing venues in the Midwest Region for 2019. A dedicated

auto training course in Columbus, WI (near Madison) and a regional airport in Pekin, IL.

• The 2019 competition schedule is loaded with even more events than in 2018.• For autocrossers – helmets only need to be checked once during the season. A sticker

will be affixed to the left side of the helmet once the helmet has been approved for competition.

Mark you calendars for Saturday, March 9th. That's the date of the Midwest Region Annual Awards banquet. This year the event, hosted by Windy City Corvettes, will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Burr Ridge IL. For $34.50 per person, you get an open bar, family style meal and the opportunity to hang out with other Corvette enthusiasts from throughout the region. There will even be a special room rate so you don't have to worry about driving home after having a few adult beverages. As soon as the flyer is available, I'll forward to the Sunburst membership.

I look forward to serving the Sunburst membership, as your Governor in 2019. It should be a great season and there will a ton of opportunities to participate in NCCC events throughout the region. Pat and I hope that you and your family have the happiest of holidays.

Mike Stevens, Governor’Sunburst Corvette Club

Greetings Sunburst Members,I was at the Ambassador convention last week. Adam Boca from NCM Insurance spoke to us about Collector Insurance. One thing I found out that peaked my interest was “Agreed Value”. Here is some information about the insurance. If you are interested, I have included a form at the bottom to get a quote. Just fill it out and send it to me at: [email protected].

Collector car insurance doesn’t necessarily mean classic car insurance or antique car insurance. In fact, the NCM Insurance Agency insures new cars, as well as, our loved classics. Do you own a new Corvette that is driven to car shows, club events, parades, or just for a nice trip to the coast? The NCM Insurance Agency can insure it! They are underwritten by American Modern Insurance Company. Here are several reasons you’ll like what they have to offer. Broad Usage: NCM Insurance Agency love to see the cars they insure driven. They highly encourage you to take your car out on a nice day and enjoy it! Mileage Options: There are several mileage plans to meet your needs. Pick the best plan that fits your vehicle andsave money. Plus, they offer rollover miles. Agreed Value: They only write car insurance or Corvette insurance policies on an Agreed Value basis. Once a value is agreed to for your vehicle, that’s what you’ll get in the event of a total loss. They will not depreciate or questions the vehicle’s value. Claims: If you were to have a claim you can take your car to the repair shop of your choice. Lower Cost: Their collector car insurance or classic car insurance will often be cheaper than your standard auto insurance companies. Plus, with the Agreed Value coverage, you know you’ll be fairly compensated. One Liability Charge: With the NCM Insurance Agency, you will pay for liability coverage only one time, while most standard auto companies charge for each vehicle. Spare Parts: They automatically include $2,000 for lost or stolen parts, plus include $75 to cover towing costs. If you want additional towing coverage you can purchase Expanded Towing coverage for $10. Optional 9-5: They offer “Nine-to-Five Driver” that allows you to drive your vehicle to work up to a couple times a week! New Car?: Any new addition to your collection is covered for 30 days and up to $50,000! Trip Interruption Coverage: If your

vehicle ever breaks down while you are on a trip more than 50 miles from home they will pay up to $600 for transportation, lodging and expenses. Douglas Automotive Celebrates 25 Years in Business

Corvettes require special attention, especially as they age. Being a Corvette owner himself, Doug McAllister, owner of Douglas Automotive, knows how important proper maintenance is to extend the life of the vehicle.

Douglas Automotive is now celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary, providing comprehensive maintenance and repair for all makes and models, import, domestic and diesel. Additionally, their extensive tire selection offers customers plenty of high performing options for any type vehicle.

All work is provided by ASE-certified technicians, backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and grounded with a mission to make automotive repair understandable and convenient while reducing cost of ownership.

Editor’s NoteI’ve personally taken my vehicles to Doug for over 10 years & I have been extremely happy with the service I have received there. I would highly recommend them for taking car of your Corvette, or any other vehicle you may own! RDW

Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to let everyone know that we brought the donations for Toyland for Salvation Army in today. Dave, Kathy S. and I had a good visit with Jeff, our contact at Salvation Army and a couple of the captains there. They were very excited and thankful when they saw what we brought, and told everyone from Sunburst, Thank You!! I have attached a couple pictures. Also, if you are still planning to bring your donations in to the December meeting, that is great, I did tell them that we would be bringing some more toys in after the December meeting. They were even more excited to hear that!

Thank you to everyone for your generous support of this project.

Two Minute Tech Tip

NOVEMBER 2018 TWO MINUTE TECH TIP

C7 Automatic Transmission Problems

The first year (2014) C7 had an optional six speed automatic transmission similar to the previous C6. They have been very reliable.

Starting in 2015, the optional automatic became an eight speed. They are excellent in most respects but some have had reliability problems. The trouble shows up as a shake or shudder under light acceleration 25-80 mph, or described as “like driving over rumble strips, or driving on rough pavement.”

GM has tried replacing the torque converter or the entire transmission, but even that fix may not be permanent. More recently, they have tried a different transmission fluid that usually helps, at least for a while.

The latest information is in GM bulletin #16-NA-175 dated October 11, 2018. Earlier bulletins, even the one from October 10, are no longer valid. The bulletin tells the dealer to verify the shudder, then simply drain the tranny and refill with the newest fluid which is a specific version of “Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF Dexron HP”. The dealer is told not to replace the torque converter or transmission, but if the problem comes up again then just do another drain/refill with the new fluid.

The bulletin further states that “A revised service procedure will be released in the first quarter of 2019.” My translation: “We still don’t know how to fix the problem, but hope to have a better idea in a few months.” The fixes, now or in the future, should be covered under your powertrain warranty which runs longer than the basic 3 yrs/36,000 miles. If you are getting toward the end of your powertrain warranty, you might consider buying an extended warranty, the two best ones seem to be Chevrolet Protection plan, or aftermarket from Ally (who previously ran the GMPP plan.) Of course, either of those plans will be expensive but cover much more than the transmission.

Keep in mind that not all cars have the problem, our 2017 now has 20,000 miles and working fine. I did recently pay ($~350) to have the drain-refill procedure done in hopes of preventing any future trouble. Fingers crossed.

Jim

Asking $3,500 OBOTypical story: was stripping the paint to get the car ready for a repaint when I got married, moved, had kids. Drove the car into indoor storage in 1993, where it has been ever since. 350/350 HP, 4 speed, convertible. Later model Corvette wheels, stainless steel insert calipers, & headers. I have the original exhaust manifolds, steering wheel, wheels and hubcaps. Fogged the engine twice while its been in storage, but haven’t tried to crank engine. Have new carpets in boxes. Seats were recovered before the car went into storage.
