FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

When you first hear the title Fugitive Songs, you might imagine a show about a band of outlaws, running from the police, singing (of course!) as they break laws and cross state lines in order to escape. Yet this show swiftly debunks this preconception. Instead, it fills the stage with a mix of real, everyday people that, for one reason or another, are on the run. Whether it’s a relationship, a job, a past, or a possible future… they’re all trying to escape.

What immediately struck me when I first heard this music was that this show was an exciting, fun, melodic, comedic, and deeply intimate look at human relationships and our constant desire for “more.” Personally, the show makes me look back at what I’ve run away from – things that I imagine are not uncommon for a young man to flee: commitment, settling, mediocrity, routine... As the years have passed, I’ve found reasons to stop running and to look back… “What was waiting at the end? All my reasons to run.”

Is there comfort in knowing what tomorrow holds? Or is running what makes life worth living? That, for me, is what Fugitive Songs is all about. What are your reasons to run? What’s at the end of your journey? Perhaps instead of running, the best answer lies in stopping, looking, experiencing, enjoying, and living. Then again, there sure is something exciting about being a fugitive...
