Pueblo Tour Locations Saturday, June 3, 2017 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Union Street Garden (Yellow Brick Road Garden) Union Avenue behind the Rawlings Library Driving directions: From I-25 – Take City Center Dr. Exit (formerly First St. Exit), Exit 98B. Turn right off the ramp, heading west on W. City Center Dr. (formerly W. 1st St.). Go 2 blocks, turn left on S. Main St. Go up the hill towards the Rawlings Library. Turn right on Church Pl. The garden is in the park between Rawlings Library and Books Again. Note: There is no public bathroom on this tour, if you need a restroom, please use Rawlings Library. The Union Avenue Garden by the Library was built in 2007. Designed by Landscape Architect Bill Zwick, it was envisioned as the City’s first community demonstration garden. The original planting plan once had over 22 Plant Select plants. Over the past ten years the garden has been maintained but has received little replanting and many species have disappeared. The most recent feature was the installation of the Storybook Sculpture “There’s No Place like Home” and was renamed “The Yellow Brick Road”. This is also the City’s first rain garden or bio swale garden. Drainage from the hill is directed into three basins where they help water the trees and clean the drainage before entering the storm water inlet. 13 Erica Court Pueblo, CO 81001 Driving directions: From I-25 take exit 101, go east on Hwy 50/47, exit on Jerry Murphy Rd. Take a left at the top of the ramp onto Jerry Murphy Rd and drive about 1 mile. Take a right on 47th St. Take the first right on Castor Drive. Go 2 blocks (past Erica Ct.) to Senecio Dr., turn right on Senecio Dr. and park along the white fence. The homeowners would prefer that people park at the back of the house where there is more room rather than on Erica Ct. itself. This beautiful garden is less than 2 years old. The owners started the landscaping project in September of that year from a blank slate of dirt and weeds. The homeowners used the experience of two other homes with xeriscape for design and plant selection. The intent was to create an oasis; a serene space to enjoy year round. Looking for low water and low maintenance the plants in the garden consist of favorites found in New Mexico, Colorado and during several years of Pueblo and Pueblo West xeriscape tours. The gardens, bird baths and fountains are all connected to a drip system. While there is a small grass area in the front yard it is drought resistant Fescue grass and can be used as a ‘blue grass alternative’. These established plants are watered once a week.

Pueblo Tour Locations Saturday, June 3, 2017 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

515 W. 22nd Street Pueblo, CO

Driving directions: From I-25 – Take the 13th St., Exit 99B. Go west to Greenwood Ave. Turn north on Greenwood. Turn west on W. 22nd St. The small garden will be on the right, look for the cute yellow home. From 425 West 23rd – Directions may vary depending where you parked and one way streets. Take W. 23rd St. west for one block to N. Elizabeth and turn left. Go one block and turn left on W. 22nd St. Garden will be on your left. This small urban garden is really a pollinator oasis. It is easy to maintain and very water wise. The shady patio off the north side of the house overlooks the sunny dry creek bed that is backed by a warm south facing fence. This toasty garden creates a perfect area for butterflies and bees to meander amongst its flowers. The garden contains many of the plants listed in the High Country Gardens Pollinator plant list.

Please note: Greeenwood Avenue is a one way street going north.

1901 N. Greenwood Pueblo, CO Driving Directions: From I-25, take the 13th Street (exit 99B). Turn right from 13th onto Greenwood Avenue and continue to 1901 N. Greenwood. Garden is on left side, corner of 19th and Greenwood.

Since purchasing the house in 1990, the owners have removed all of the junipers, a large percentage of grass and almost all the rock. The primary focus was to have as much color, for as much of the year, with as little water requirement as possible. Luckily this is getting easier and easier with so many water-wise plants on the market. The owner refers to this style of gardening as “Successional Water-wise Gardening”. It is not a carefully planned “everything in its’ place” garden, but encompasses the look of a garden bursting with color. Most of the hardscaping, and all of the planting and maintenance is done by the owner as a labor of love.

425 W. 23rd Street, Pueblo, CO Driving Directions: From I-25, take the 13th Street (exit 99B). Turn right from 13th onto Greenwood Avenue and continue to the corner of Greenwood and 23rd. Garden is on right side, corner of 23rd and Greenwood.

This garden reflects the owners’ love of all things beautiful. The curb

median (hell strip) rock garden catches your attention immediately, but

the backyard includes its own unique gems. In the back, through the

grape arbor, tucked in the corner is a small Japanese garden, a reminder

of its creators three years of living in Japan. The backyard also contains

a naturalistic stone raised bed full of perennials, surrounded by a

collection of more flowers. Herbs reside happily amongst the flowers.

Vegetables are grown in containers and flowering shrubs punctuate the

perimeter of the back lawn. The curbside garden was completed in one

growing season and is eye candy for three seasons each year.

Designated a Plant Select Garden, it offers an array of trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses selected for their beauty, fragrance, variety, hardiness and ability to thrive on little water.

The homeowners moved to Pueblo West 8 years ago to a landscape in serious need of some designing and repair. Some plants were barely alive, but after a few years of care they are doing well. After searching the internet to find which plants and trees would do well in the desert climate, several were chosen and most have done well. The rock garden in the front has penstemon, agastache, candytuft, gaillardia, thyme and iceplant, lilies, black eyed susan and cotoneaster. Shrubs include lilac, smokebush, red twig dogwood , blue mist spirea, snowball bush, butterfly bush and burning bush. Trees include mountain ash, chanticleer pear, Colorado blue spruce, honey locust and weeping mulberry. Ornamental grasses, phlox and rose bushes are also growing well in the landscape.

The homeowners moved to this 1.25-acre lot 20 years ago, and the property has enjoyed several “transformations” through the years. The latest “epiphany” began to take shape five years ago with the installation of 5,000 feet of the bubbler watering system. With the watering chores addressed, the homeowners turned their attention to developing raised beds, flagstone pathways, fruit trees, a small vineyard, and several beds of native and non-native plants. Pea gravel is the main ground cover, allowing the native grass to develop among the many trees on the property. The emphasis is on providing a unique space for birds, wildlife and most of all, grandchildren to enjoy.

866 West Moccasin Drive, Pueblo West, CO 81007 Driving Directions: At the intersection of US 50 and West McCulloch (no traffic light), turn south and proceed 0.3 mile. Turn right onto W Calle Allegre Drive. Proceed 0.7 mile. West Allegre Dr then turns right and becomes S Pendleton Drive. Proceed 0.3 mile and turn right onto W. Moccasin Drive.

Living in the mountains for many years had its own challenges, but the homeowners’ move 5 years ago to Pueblo was an even bigger challenge. The husband said the wife was nuts to want some green in a dry, hot, brown landscape. She immediately went to work moving dirt, building berms and planting. At first her efforts seemed useless. The rabbits, prairie dogs and hot dry weather were the enemy. Adding an automatic watering system was the key, along with researching for the right plants. Putting wire cages around the young plants paid off. By year two the plants began to flourish. The homeowners note that this yard may not be as green as the one they had in the mountains, but it has character, color and abundant wildlife.

1204 East Sapinero Drive, Pueblo West CO 81007 Driving Directions: At the intersection of US Hwy 50 and Purcell Boulevard, turn north onto N. Purcell Boulevard. Proceed 0.9 mile. Turn right onto East Sapinero Drive. Proceed 0.6 mile. Residence will be on the right (at the intersection of E. Sapinero Drive and N. Boyero Avenue).

With minimal effort/expense, this homeowner has transformed an acre of arid prairie into a garden oasis. Half of the acreage has been left untouched

with natural grasses and sagebrush. (Mowing is done but once or twice a year.) Common area plants (yucca, several varieties of cactus and clumps of prairie grass), rock, a small patch of grass, and a handful of evergreen/deciduous trees immediately surround the house, creating a xeriscape that requires a minimal amount of care. A small number of flowering plants have been thrown into the mix to provide variety and

a splash of color that attract hummingbirds, lizards, and butterflies. This lends itself to an attractive yard, in which a person can take great pride. A minimalist approach to gardening like this will bring a natural look to your home – AND is something than anyone can easily do. Again, the end result is this: A parched, high desert parcel of land

is transformed into a “wild prairie rose.”
