Scholarships are an important component of VFEF’s educational efforts. They are donor-designated and have been granted to Virginia Tech forestry students from the inception of the Foundation. Echoing the importance of this program is a former scholarship recipient, “I am truly honored to have received a VFEF sponsored scholarship while pursuing my Forestry degree at Virginia Tech. The financial assistance provided by VFEF scholarships is incredibly beneficial and appreciated, especially as college tuition costs continue to increase. Perhaps equally as critical is the recognition for hard-working students as well as the confidence and motivation these scholarships provide as students continue working toward a degree in this important field.”

Former scholarship recipients who have given back to VFEF in 2016 include:

The President’s Message

VFEF Growth Means Greater SupportLet me begin my annual report to the Virginia Forestry Association by thanking you for your enthusiastic support and for your generous contributions. This past year has been a good one for the Foundation.

Thanks to a booming stock market and your donations we were again able to increase our support for both the educational programs and our scholarships. As an example in 2007, we contributed $4,000 to fund Forestry Internships at four 4-H Centers. This year we are

contributing $16,000 to the Centers. That is a fourfold increase.

The Foundation has recently completed its 59th year of supporting forestry and forest products education in the Commonwealth. It all started when Paul Mellon of Upperville challenged a group of Virginia’s forestry and industrial leaders to match his $25,000 donation. It took them five years to raise that amount, but when they did, the Foundation was off and running. Victor W. Stewart, our first president, led the way by endowing the first scholarship which now sends $6,000 to support deserving students at Virginia Tech.

Donor designated scholarships are the greatest expenditure of the Foundation. They are known as General Fund and Stuermann. These scholarships provide some seventy percent of the scholarships awarded by Virgina Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment.

The Foundation has also taken on new educational programs like Skyline Chapter SAF ’s “Teaching Trees, Teaching Teachers.” This program

is designed to give teachers “factual and credible information about Virginia’s hardwood forest” and a number of forest management techniques are reviewed.

For years Project Learning Tree has been supported, in fact it is our biggest educational outlay. PLT is an environmental educational program designed for teachers and other leaders working with youth from kindergarten through grade 12. In 2016, 560 educators attended PLT training events in Virginia. The events consist of day-long workshops offered at schools and other

public centers and allow teachers to relate to natural resource professionals who can act as “experts” in their field of expertise.

Other educational programs supported by the Foundation include but are not limited to: Awards and Recognition for 4-H Forestry and Holiday Lake Forestry Camp.

We at the Foundation think the future offers a number of challenges and opportunities for forest resource education. Virginia is becoming more urban and our citizens need to be made aware of the importance of the forestry and forest products industry. Together, they contribute substantially to our economy ($21 billion annually per the Virginia Department of Forestry’s website), and they also provide a number of environmental benefits including carbon sequestration.

Therefore our efforts going forward need to be directed to expanding statewide youth (PreK-12) educational programs that promote sustainable forests for the environmental, social and economic benefits of all Virginians.

If you are aware of a program that might benefit from VFEF support, contact us at 804-278-8733. More information can be found on our website at www.vfef.net.

History and Purpose

The Virginia Forestry Educational Foundation was formed almost 60 years ago to be operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. No part of its earnings can go to the benefit of an individual or director; it cannot engage in carrying on propaganda or attempt to influence legislation or participate in any political campaign.

The principal activities of the Foundation, when formed, were to:

A. Encourage the reforestation of idle and abandoned agricultural and cutover woodlands.B. Provide prizes for the annual “Keep Virginia Green” poster contest.C. Create more interest in forestry among students by contributing

prizes to forestry judging contests and tuition for attendance at one-week forestry camps.

D. Assist vocational agriculture teachers to arouse more interest in the study of forestry.E. Provide scholarships to worthy high school graduates as a means of

encouraging and aiding them in obtaining a college education in forestry.

These activities of the Foundation have been adjusted and modified over time to meet the current environment but are still consistent with principles established by the founders.

The Foundation seeks to support programs that demonstrate that sustainable forestry can protect watersheds and wildlife while preserving aesthetic and recreational values of the community. Sustainable forestry supports jobs for local loggers, sawmills and other segments of the local communities. Good forest practices assure a steady flow of over 5,000 wood-related items generated by the forest products industry that are so essential to our everyday lives.

Foundation investments

The investment policy directs the Board of Directors to use no-load equity mutual funds as the primary investment vehicle. These funds have the advantage of very low administrative costs and provide excellent diversification. The funds can be liquidated or moved to other investments very efficiently. Dividends are reinvested and are used to support approved programs and projects.

The Investment Policy requires that a qualified financial advisor conduct an annual review. The Board’s Investment Committee meets periodically to review the allocation of assets and to invest new monies.
