According to Wikipedia: Friendship is defined as a relationship of mutual affection between people. Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. Friendship has been studied in aca-demic fields such as communication, sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, including, relational dialectics, and attachment styles. Although there are many forms of friendship, some of which may vary from place to place, certain character-istics are present in many types of bond. Such characteristics per Wikipedia include affection, kindness love, virtue, sympathy, empathy, honesty, altruism, mutual understanding, compassion, enjoyment of each other's company, and the ability to be oneself, express one's feelings, Also as a friend we can feel comfort in knowing that if we make a mistake, we do so without fear of judgment, Being part of a HOG Chapter is like being in a family. We have close friendships within the chapter and outside the chapter. Close bonds are forged when we find other people that have the same likes and traits. Friends have strong bonds that may have started many years ago or may have just started recently. Furthermore as per Wikipedia, While there is no practical limit on what types of people can form a friendship, friends tend to share common backgrounds, occupations, or interests and have similar demographics. We as Harley Owners and Chapter Members we share these traits, we are social animals and have the desire to be around our chapter family. Isn’t that why we joined SNHOG! We come together as one family, friends who share a passion for our Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.

ROAD CAPTAIN’S NEWS

Hot August Weather and Monsoon Season It’s that time of year when the days are extremely hot and the nights are very warm. That brings with it the Monsoon Season when the afternoon clouds can bring us torrential downpours. This article will give you some information regarding a few of the unexpected road surface hazards that mo-torcycle rides need to be aware of- Grooved Pavement, Tar Snakes and Cattle Guards. Grooved pavement: Wet weather traction improvement grooves: This form of pavement groove is installed on road surfaces to help reduce hydroplaning and skidding on wet road surfaces. Often you will encounter these grooved sections on roads that have a history of many wet weather crashes. Although grooved concrete surfaces seem to be more common, this road surface technique also is used on asphalt. Wet weather grooves are ap-plied in two ways: perpendicular to the flow of traffic or parallel. Both func-tion similarly to the rain grooves on your tires -— they create channels to remove water from the tire/road contact area. The depth of the rain grooves and spacing between grooves are typically uniform. The effects of perpendicular rain grooves on your motorcycle’s handling are minimal. Think of it being like the rumble strips along the edge of many roads, but smaller. Parallel rain grooves can have a more pronounced effect on handling; it feels like the road surface wants to influence the steering of the motorcycle. Unfortunately for motorcyclists, parallel rain grooves are less expensive and quick-er to install on new road surfaces, which makes them a more widely used option. Road construction grooves: Highway resurfacing projects create a different type of groove when the old road surface is milled away in preparation for new paving. Road sur-face milling is almost always done in the direction of travel. Unlike rain grooves, surface milling creates grooves that vary in depth and spacing, often wandering around in the lane. This type of grooved pavement has the most profound impact on motorcycle handling. Worthy of special attention is the frequent presence of particularly deep and wandering grooves in the milled surface. This type of groove is often accompanied by repaired sec-tions of roadbed that are not grooved. The combined effect of the surface irregularities can feel like the road is wrestling with your motorcycle. Handling grooves: While grooved pavement feels alarming, especially to new riders, it is manageable. Begin by reducing your speed and remaining calm. Apply a firm grip to the handlebars, but don’t try to wrestle the front tire. Pay am-ple attention to the surface. Rain grooved pavement can chip and pothole, and construction milling has those deep wandering grooves. Avoid fixating on grooves, however. By being smooth at the controls you can opti-mize your traction and safely traverse the grooves.

ROAD CAPTAIN’S NEWS

Tar Snakes: You’ve seen tar snakes out on the road countless times, but probably never paid too much attention to them in your car. But when riding your motorcycle, it’s a whole different story. With only two tiny patches of rubber keeping you upright on a bike, you have to be a lot more wary about road surface imperfections, and tar snakes are among the most sinister ones you’ll find. What are Tar Snakes? As roads age, they develop cracks in the surface. As the road gets abused and traffic and weather take their toll, those cracks get bigger and bigger, and cause the road sur-face to degrade quickly. As a temporary fix, road crews will fill the cracks with a seal-ant – usually a soft, tar-based substance – to fill the cracks and keep them from ex-panding. The result? A road covered in random, windy black lines that resemble snakes; hence the term, “tar snakes.” Using crack sealant like this is a normal practice on roads across the country; you see them everywhere, and it doesn’t affect the vast majority of 4-wheeled vehicles on the road. In fact, you probably don’t even notice them when in your car. But on your bike, it’s a whole different story. Why Tar Snakes are a Hazard to Motorcyclists Asphalt sealer, or tar snakes, are hazardous to riders because they can compromise your traction in three ways: 1. They have a very different texture than asphalt, and your tires will respond differently to them than to the

road. 2. They create a bumpy road surface that can unsettle your suspension. 3. They can become softer or slicker in hot weather, or when wet. They become a lot softer than asphalt, so

they can easily get foreign objects embedded into them and they can even come dislodged and stick to your tires! Again, none of this would be an issue in a four-wheeled vehicle (which is why they are used), but on a motorcycle, they pose a unique hazard.

What Will Happen If You Hit A Tar Snake? Most of the time, when you ride over tar snakes, you won’t notice much more than a slight bump in the road. The trouble starts when you’re leaned over; hitting a tar snake can cause you to lose traction momentarily, causing your bike to slide. Often, you’ll regain traction quickly and won’t experience more than a “puckering moment,” but in a worst-case scenario, you can go down. So what do you do when you encounter these dan-gerous snakes? How to Handle Tar Snakes on your Motorcycle Remember, tar snakes are only applied to roads that are damaged, so you’re already riding on a road surface that’s less than ideal. The tar snakes on the road make the surface better for most vehicles, but worse for us riders, so you have to be doubly cautious when riding over them. Here are a few steps you can take to deal with them: 1. Always scan the road surface while riding to look for them. Try to memorize where they are on roads you

like to ride, because they do tend to be clustered in patches. 2. When you ride over them, reduce your speed (of course) and try to ride over them vertically, at a 90-

degree angle, if possible. Avoid those that go along your line of travel.

ROAD CAPTAIN’S NEWS

3. Your bike may wobble or shudder as you ride over them, so remain loose on the bars and let your tires find traction on their own. The more you try to control your bike with a death grip when dealing with reduced traction, the more likely something bad will happen. Tires are better at finding traction on their own than we are. 4. Also, remember that tar snakes respond to changes in weather very differently than normal road surfaces do. In hot weather, they can “melt” and become softer and sticky, and when wet, they can be a lot slicker than asphalt. Overall, tar snakes are hazardous to motorcycles because they are simply not designed with us riders in mind. Just know to look out for them, be prepared, and keep the rubber side down... Where it belongs! Cattle Guards Cattle guards are those pipes that are set into the roadways to keep cattle off the roads. Here locally we find them at each end of the Red Rock Loop to keep the donkeys off our residential roads. They can present a hazard to motorcycles when they are crossed so do your best to ride over them vertically at a 90-degree angle, if possible. When they are wet they become even more of a hazard. It is like riding on ice because the metal surface. Karen Heriford Road Captain

Since then, NBTS has built a track-record of success, playing a critical role in funding many of the field’s crucial findings that have brought us to the threshold of a new era in 2016. From that strong founda-tion, we have launched the Defeat Pediatric Brain Tumors Research Collaborative.

The structure of Defeat Pediatric Brain Tumors is what makes it unique.

The research program is based on NBTS’ “Defeat” program model, which is a new business approach to sci-ence that facilitates collaborations and exchanges of real-time data to accelerate progress in R&D efforts and transform the way brain tumor research is funded and conducted. This approach is completely unique in its relationship to traditional funding of research by nonprofits, which typically rely on a standard RFA grant-making process, where checks are distributed to individual labs that apply for grant funding, but the research isn’t managed and collaboration isn’t fostered.

The Defeat Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Collaborative approach is beneficial because it: Was not built in a vacuum: the effort is based on input from all key stakeholders –researchers, industry, gov-ernment, and nonprofits/advocates — to determine the real barriers to getting to more new treatments

• Is the only effort in this field that is ambitious enough to tackle the challenges via an end-to-end approach, from basic science to the clinic, including powerful international collaborations and integrating with lead-ing clinical trial consortium, the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium (PNOC)

• De-risks early entry of biopharmaceutical companies into pediatric brain tumor trials by producing industry-level data, requisite to beginning new clinical trials in humans

• Provides 100% of the grant funding to the research: NBTS does not pay for hospital’s indirect costs

• Doubles the investment dollar: Collaborative agreements signed with partner research centers aim to lock in an agreement that for every dollar of grant investment the institution will match that dollar in cash or in-kind

• Takes a unique approach to segments like Intellectual Property (IP) to allow breakthroughs to continue to fund the model and expanded research.

Through Project Impact: A Campaign to Defeat Pediatric Brain Tumors, National Brain Tumor Society will drive the discovery of more therapeutic options for pediatric brain tumor clinical trials, and enable them to be delivered to patients more quickly. In doing so, the National Brain Tumor Society will empower the devel-opment of the first ever standard of care for pediatric high-grade gliomas. We ask you to please invest in this critical effort to help cure these kids. Your generous donations or legacy giving will help generate new re-search that could lay the path directly to better treatments and ultimate a cure. Please join us now.

We of SNHOG have our Ride for the Kids charity event coming up in September. This is a motorcycle event to raise funds, bring about awareness, and inspire hope to families living with pediatric brain tumor diagnosis. Here is a little about the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is the world's largest nonprofit solely dedicated to the pediatric brain tumor community. We serve the more than 28,000 children and teens in the United States who are living with a brain tumor diagnosis.

We offer free educational resources about brain tumors, a toolkit for newly diagnosed families, college schol-arships and much more. As the world's largest nonprofit solely dedicated to children and teens with brain tumors, the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s mission is to care for families along their entire journey, find a cure for the deadliest childhood cancer, and help survivors thrive.

Care. Through our family support programs, resources and activities, we equip, educate and empower families. All services are free for pediatric brain tumor families, including emergency financial assistance, a practical toolkit for newly diagnosed families, brain tumor family camps and bereavement support.

Cure. Our research portfolio is paving the way for better treatments, increased survivorship and a higher quality of life for children and teens. Our Research Advisory Network, comprised of the top childhood brain tumor ex-perts, helps strategically shape our research funding program for maximum impact.

Thrive. Children and teens with brain tumors are the PBTF’s Stars, and we’re committed to helping these Stars shine. By uniting the pediatric brain tumor community around our shared mission, we can fight for the future every Star deserves – one free of physical, intellectual and psychological effects and recurrence.

The PBTF needs our help. Won’t you join us in the fight against this diagnosis. Do you care enough to help us to raise those funds needed for research to find the cure, so these families can live and thrive. THEN, start right now in raising the funds!!! Join us, come out and ride your motorcycle on September 24, 2017 to help bring about awareness, and inspire hope to families living with pediatric brain tumor diagnosis. Donation can be given under the SNHOG team lead by Karen and Ducky Heriford at: www.curethekids.org/events/ride-for-kids/full-event-list.html Make sure when only donating online that it is under SNHOG.

The Board wants to thank everyone for all the suggestions that were sub-mitted over the past few months. We opened the box at our 'All Officer Meeting" and dedicated time to all of them. Please keep your suggestions coming! If you have any thoughts about rides or restaurants for Meet-n-Eats, or just an idea to make the chapter better please submit them at every General Membership meeting in the box at the back of the room. We take the time to read each of them and some have already been imple-mented - for example: **we will be planning more Sunday rides, **we are unable to EVER have cake at RRHD (some people just could not keep the crumbs and frosting off the carpet). So cookies it will be! **we will plan some rides with later start times when the weather per-mits. thanks again everyone! Keep them coming -

Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. Our SNHOG Event Photo Gallery is also a great way to share the fun we have as a Chapter with friends, family and/or anyone who is skeptical about joining our Chapter. By browsing through our event photos for just a few minutes, anyone is able to quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Rolando Adriano, Chester McQuillan, Mel Johanson, and Sharon Gordon are our official Chapter Photographers, they are obviously not the only ones taking pictures at our events. If you have photos you would like to submit for the gallery, please email them to [email protected] and they’ll get added to the gallery. The name and date of the event must be included in the email.
