President’s Message

WHERE DID THE MILKMEN GO?

When I was a kid, I remember one of the highlights of the day was when the Milkman

delivered the milk. We didn't have electronics back in the day and there were only

about 7 TV channels that you might have been able to pick up in Sheboygan with your

antenna. Since there wasn't much for a kid under the age of 5 to do, my mom would get

us hyped up about seeing the Milkman so we could spend two seconds saying "hi."

As I take time to reflect on the Milkman, I think about where he went. Consumers were

trained to pick up milk at the corner store. The Milkman's route responsibilities

changed as he went from delivering milk to homes, to delivering milk to corner stores

which turned into driving a semi truck and delivering to numerous mega grocery stores

each day.

The number of Milkmen has drastically declined over the past 50 years. What's going

to happen to the role of Realtors over the next 50 years? What can you do to preserve

the industry?

If you haven't noticed, the number of people who try to sell their home "by owner" has

been climbing. Most of these people have friends and relatives who are Realtors that

give them free advice. In many cases, Realtors even give them the correct forms to use

and tell them when and how to use them.

I'm guilty and I'm sure many of you are as well. My eyes were opened when the person

I helped had the audacity to post on social media how easy it was to sell their home

without a Realtor. How easy would have it been without any professional advice?

As we move in 2018, a great New Years Resolution for Realtors would be to stop giv-

ing free advice to family and friends when they want to sell their home by owner.

Check with your E&O provider to see if you are covered for giving free advice. If we

continue to give free advice, we are essentially training consumers how to do our job,

just as consumers were trained to go to the store to buy milk. Do you want to end up

like the Milkmen?
