On behalf of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and its nearly 16,000 members in more than 110 countries across the world, we would like to welcome you to the Abu Dhabi 2017 ASN Highlights & Second SEHA Nephrology in Primary Care Conference in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company Nephrology and Kidney Disease Council (SEHA) and the Emirates Medical Association for Nephrology (EMAN).

ASN Highlights is a clinically focused educational opportunity that translates the highlights of ASN’s Annual Meeting, which is better known as Kidney Week, into practical advice with clinical relevance. The day will consist of expert speakers from the ASN Highlights team reviewing new developments in the following major areas of nephrology: glomerular diseases, transplantation, acute kidney injury, end-stage renal disease, hypertension, and general nephrology/chronic kidney diseases. The format is designed to help you incorporate the best of ASN Kidney Week 2016 into patient care. On the second day the ASN Highlights team will present on various topics at the Second SEHA Nephrology in Primary Care Conference.

In collaboration with American Society of Nephrology (ASN) it gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 ASN Highlights and Second SEHA Nephrology in Primary Care Conference in the Middle East. The conference is being hosted by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company Nephrology and Kidney Disease Council and is endorsed by Emirates Medical Association Nephrology Society (EMAN).

The conference presents key nephrology topics from the ASN Annual Meeting followed by more general topics on nephrology and chronic kidney disease.Through a culmination of collective efforts, an outstanding two-day program is prepared by reputable keynote speakers from the American Society of Nephrology. The program includes an exclusive one-day comprehensive program on ASN Highlights covering all major updates from the ASN Kidney Week 2016, which will provide the opportunity for specialists to learn about the latest updates.

FACULTYPROFILES

Dr. Choi is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Director of Nephrology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He obtained his B.A. from Yale University. He received his medical degree and did his internal medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins. He was a nephrology fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the President-Elect of the National Kidney Foundation. He was the Chair of the 2011 National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meeting and he is the Vice Chair of Education for the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF KDOQI). He was co-editor of Chronic Kidney Disease for NephSAP and was the Clinical Nephrology team leader for the American Society of Nephrology Renal Weekends. He was the Deputy Editor for Advances in Chronic Kidney Disease and was an Associate Editor of Clinical Journal of the ASN, and Clinical Nephrology. He is Co-Editor of the Oxford Manual of Nephrology and Hypertension. His clinical and research interests include glomerular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and nephrolithiasis.

ALEXANDER C. WISEMAN, MD, FAST

MEDICAL DIRECTOR, KIDNEY AND PANCREAS TRANSPLANT PROGRAMSUNIVERSITY OF COLORADO HOSPITALDENVER, COLORADO, USA

Dr. Wiseman is Medical Director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Programs at the University of Colorado Hospital. Dr. Wiseman is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Wiseman completed both his undergraduate and medical school training at Washington University in St. Louis, followed by residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He then completed fellowships in Nephrology and Transplant Nephrology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Wiseman is an active member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the American Society of Transplantation (AST). He is active in postgraduate and fellowship education for both societies, is an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Transplantation, and is on the American Society of Transplantation Board of Directors as a Councilor-at-Large. Dr. Wiseman’s academic interests include transplant therapies for diabetes, organ allocation and utilization, immunosuppressive strategies and emerging therapies. He has authored over 50 publications and 15 book chapters and has given over 100 invited lectures nationally and internationally.

PAUL DRAWZ, MD

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MEDICINE, DIVISION OF RENAL DISEASES AND HYPERTENSIONUNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTAMINNESOTA, USA

FACULTYPROFILES

Dr. Drawz is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on the relationship between kidney disease, ambulatory blood pressure, and adverse cardiovascular and renal outcomes. He was the lead author on the first ambulatory blood pressure manuscript from the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study which described the increased risk for renal and cardiovascular target organ damage in patients with masked hypertension. He is the PI for the SPRINT Ambulatory Blood Pressure ancillary study, as well as the PI for the International Database of Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Renal Patients (I-DARE) coordinating center. Dr. Drawz graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College with a degree in sociology and received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He completed his internal medicine and nephrology training at Case Western Reserve University.

HOLLY KRAMER, MD, MPH

FACULTYPROFILES

Dr. Kramer is an Associate Professor of Public Health Sciences and Medicine in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. She is a practicing nephrologist and participates in both research and teaching. She is currently the Vice Chair of the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) Commentaries and Controversies and has been involved with the KDOQI leadership since 2009. In 2016 she worked with KDOQI leadership to outline the controversies of utilizing ultrafiltration rate thresholds as a measure for dialysis quality. Dr. Kramer is very passionate about nutrition and its impact on health. Her past and current research focuses on the intersection between nutrition, kidney, and cardiovascular disease, and she has published several articles which identify obesity as a risk factor for kidney disease and its progression. Dr. Kramer graduated from Indiana University and completed Internal Medicine Residency at Emory University where she also served as Chief Medical Resident. She then completed her nephrology fellowship at the combined Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. She has completed research funded by the American Kidney Fund, Dialysis Clinic Incorporated, National Institutes of Health, and the National Kidney Foundation.

RAVINDRA MEHTA, MD, FASN

PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF MEDICINE, DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINEUNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAN DIEGOCALIFORNIA, USA

FACULTYPROFILES

Dr. Mehta is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at University of California San Diego where he directs the UCSD Masters in Clinical Research Program. He is an internationally recognized expert in the field of AKI. He holds a patent for “Continuous Hemodialysis Using Citrate.” He chairs the annual International CRRT Conference in San Diego that is now in its 22nd year. He chaired the ISN Committee on AKI and is a founding member of the Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative (ADQI) and the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN). His research has informed the development of the RIFLE and AKIN diagnostic and staging criteria for AKI and development of KDIGO guidelines for AKI. He has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in San Diego and the US for several years. In 2008 he was recognized by the American Nephrologists of Indian Origin, and in March 2009 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in the UK. He received the ISN Bywaters Award for lifetime achievement in AKI in April 2011. He has most recently been appointed as the Director of the ISN 0by25 initiative to eliminate preventable deaths from AKI by 2025. He has trained over 50 post-doctoral fellows, of whom 17 have carried out their research projects with him. He received the MBBS. degree (1976) from the Government Medical School in Amritsar, India, and the MD (1979) and DM (1981) degrees from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India. He subsequently completed a nephrology fellowship at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY and obtained his boards in Internal Medicine (1986) and Nephrology (1988). He has been on the faculty at San Diego since 1988.

JAMES TUMLIN, MD

PROFESSOR, RENAL DIVISION, DIRECTORUNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, SOUTHEAST RENAL RESEARCH INSTITUTETENNESSEE, USA

FACULTYPROFILES

Dr. James Tumlin currently serves as Professor in the renal division at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and director of the Southeast Renal Research Institute. Dr. Tumlin received his medical degree from the University of South Florida and went on to complete a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in nephrology at Emory University. He is boardcertified in internal medicine and research nephrology. Dr. Tumlin was then invited to join the Emory Faculty where excelled as a clinician and translational investigator. His laboratory was responsible for defining many of the physiologic roles of Calcineurin in the mammalian nephron. Dr. Tumlin left Emory at the Associate Professor level I 2005 where he then joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine While he has authored over 95 peer reviewed publications and is a nationally recognized expert in Lupus Nephritis and other forms of glomerular disease. Dr. Tumlin serves on the editorial boards for the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. He also serves as the associate editor for the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. In addition to serving as president of the Medical Advisory Panel for the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia, he is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Society of Nephrology, American Federation of Clinical Investigators, Southern Society of Clinical Investigation, International Society of Nephrology and Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA). Dr. Tumlin is also the Founder and President of NephroNet; a non‐profit consortium of clinical investigators that are dedicated to advancing the field of nephrology through clinical research. Dr. Tumlin has lectured extensively at seminars and conferences, nationally as well as internationally, on dozens of topics including Apoptosis and Autoimmunity, acute kidney failure, radiocontrast nephropathy and lupus nephritis.
