A LOOK BACK AT 2017: The Padres finished the 2017 season with a 71-91 (.438) record and in fourth place in the National League West…they posted a 43-38 (.531) record at home and ex- tended their streak of winning 127 consecutive games at home when leading entering the ninth inning, which dates back to July 2014 and is the longest active streak in the majorsthe Padres had 52 players appear in at least one game this season with an average age of 27 years and 44 days old, the second youngest average age among all MLB teams behind only the Cincinnati Reds (27 years and 26 days old). WHERE THERE’S A WIL, THERE’S A CYCLE: On April 11 at Colorado, Wil Myers hit a single, a double, a home run and a triple to account for the second cycle in team history in the club’s 7,660th all-time game...it was also Myers’ first career cycle, as he had fallen a triple shy of the cycle on seven separate occasions in his career (ELIAS). The Padres hit 89 home runs at Petco Park, a team record for most home runs hit at home in a season...the previous Petco Park record was 83 home runs, set by the 2016 club….the 1992 and 1993 squads each hit 87 home runs at Qualcomm Stadium. For the second consecutive season, the Padres had 21 different players hit a home run in 2017, two shy of the team record of 23 different players in 2008 and 2013. Overall on the season there were 182 home runs hit at Petco Park, with 89 by the Padres and 93 by opponents, the most ever in Petco Park history (previous 176 in 2016) and most in San Diego all-time, ahead of 178 home runs at Qualcomm in 2001. In the Midsummer Classic, Hand tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to become the seventh pitcher in Padres history with a perfect inning in the All-Star Game and the first since Andy Benes in 1993…he struck out Robinson Cano, the game’s MVP, on three pitches. On the season, Hand notched a career-best 2.16 ERA (19 ER, 79.1 IP), converted 21 out of 26 save opportunities and posted a 104-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Became the second reliever in Padres history to record back-to-back 100 strikeout sea- sons, after recording 111 strikeouts in 2016…Trevor Hoffman is the only other San Di- ego reliever to accomplish the feat, done so in the 1996-97 seasons...Hand’s 104 strike- outs in 2017 were the fourth-most among all MLB relievers...dating back to the 2016 season, his 215 strikeouts are third-most of any reliever, behind only NYY Dellin Betances’ 226 and CLE Andrew Miller’s 218. His 154 appearances since 2016 rank tied for second in the majors with CLE Byan Shaw, behind only BOS Addison Reed’s 157 ap- pearances. 2017 SEASON REVIEW

ON YOUR MARK, LAMET, GO: 25-year-old Dinelson Lamet’s Major League career got off to a promising start in 2017, as he allowed three earned runs or less in 15 of his 21 starts, posted a 139-to-54 strikeout-to-walk ratio and limited opposing hitters to a .210 (88-for-419) average.

• Lamet averaged 10.94 strikeouts per nine innings, the fourth-best mark by a rookie all-time (minimum 20 starts)…Kerry Wood posted a 12.58 mark in 1998, followed by Dwight Gooden (11.39 in 1984) and Hideo Nomo (11.10 in 1995).

• Among pitchers with at least 20 games started this season, Lamet’s 10.94 K/9 ratio ranked eighth in the majors and fourth in the NL, behind only ARI Robbie Ray (12.11), WSH Max Scherzer (12.02) and LAD Rich Hill (11.01)…his .210 opponent batting average ranked ninth in the majors and fifth in the NL.

• Made his Major League debut on 5/25 against the New York Mets at Citi Field, tossing 5.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and striking out eight in the Padres’ 4-3 victory…became only the second player in club history to earn the win and strike out at least eight in their MLB debut...LHP Bob Shirley earned the win and struck out 11 in his 8.2 innings pitched on 4/10/77 at CIN (ELIAS).

• In his next start, he improved to 2-0 in his Petco Park debut on 5/30 vs. CHC, tossing 5.0 innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out eight in the Padres’ 6-2 victory…per ELIAS, with his eight strikeouts, he became the first rookie since 2014 to fan eight batters in each of his first two MLB starts since NYY Masahiro Tanaka in 2014…he was the 13th rookie to accomplish the feat in the modern era (1900-present).

• Struck out a career-high 12 batters in his start on 6/17 at MIL, the second-highest single-game total by a Padres rookie in franchise history, behind only Oliver Perez’s 13 on 7/7/02 at COL..the 12 strikeouts matched the highest single-game total by any rookie this season (also: CIN Amir Garrett on 4/19/17 vs. BAL).

RULE 5 GUYS: The Padres selected or acquired the top three picks in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft, trading for RHP Miguel Diaz who was selected by Minnesota from Milwaukee first overall, trading for C Luis Torrens who was selected second overall by Cincinnati from New York (AL) and drafting INF/OF Allen Córdoba from St. Louis third overall...all three players spent the entire season with the Padres.

• Three times in the past decade, only three picks from an entire Rule 5 Draft have stuck on a Major League roster for an entire season…the only other team to carry three Rule 5 picks on its roster for an entire season was the 2003 Tigers, which kept Wil Ledezma, Matt Roney and Chris Spurling…that Detroit team went 43-119, posting the worst record since the 1962 New York Mets…the Padres went 71-91, ac-counting for 28 more wins than the ’03 Tigers.

• The Padres’ 2015 Rule 5 selection, Luis Perdomo, set career highs in nearly every category in 2017 and ranked tied for first on the club in quality starts (16), tied for second in wins (eight), third in innings pitched (163.2) and fourth in strikeouts (118)…he also became the first pitcher to hit four triples in a season since PHI Robin Roberts in 1955.

JOSE CAN YOU SEE: The Padres nominated left fielder Jose Pirela for the Hank Aaron Award, given annually to the top offensive performer in each league.

• Pirela started the season with Triple-A El Paso where his .331 average, 13 home runs and 42 RBI led the entire Padres minor league system at the time of his call up to the big league club on 6/6.

• Pirela proceeded to lead the Padres in average (.288), on-base percentage (.347) and slugging (.490) with 25 doubles, four triples and 10 home runs in 83 games.

• This past January, Pirela was named the Most Valuable Player of the Venezuelan Winter League Championship Series after helping Aguilas de Zulia claim their sixth title and first in 17 years…it was his first appearance in the Venezuelan Winter League finals and he hit .450 (9-for-20) with a two-run home run in the series clincher.

VETERAN LEADERSHIP: In the offseason, the Padres signed veteran pitchers Jhoulys Chacin and Clayton Richard, as well as infielder Erick Aybar, to shore up the starting rotation and infield depth.

• Chacin and Richard each made a club-leading 32 starts on the season…Chacin led the club in ERA (3.89) and strikeouts (153), tied for first in quality starts (16) and ranked second in innings pitched (180.1), while Richard led the club in innings pitched (197.1), ranked second in strikeouts (151) and third in quality starts (14).

• Chacin led all of Major League Baseball in home ERA (1.79) and opponent batting average at home (.175)…his 1.79 ERA is the lowest ERA of any player’s first 16 home starts as a Padre in club history, ahead of Greg Harris’ 1.94 ERA through his first 16 home starts from 1988-91, Andrew Cashner’s 2.21 mark from 2012-14 and Kevin Brown’s 2.21 mark in 1998...he has made 18 career starts (20 appearances) at Petco Park and is 11-4 with a 2.03 ERA (26 ER, 115.1 IP), 95 strikeouts against 43 walks and a .185 opponent batting average...among all active pitchers who have made at least 18 starts at Petco, Chacin’s 2.03 ERA and .185 opponent batting average both rank first.

• Richard’s eight pickoffs led all of baseball, his 377 induced ground balls ranked tied for first in the majors with TOR Marcus Stroman and he forced opponents to ground into 32 double plays, which ranked tied for second in the majors…he was one of five pitchers this season to throw multiple complete nine-inning games (5/21 at ARI and 8/16 vs. PHI)…his 197.1 innings pitched ranked 16th in the majors and eighth in the National League.

• Aybar made a club-leading 93 starts at shortstop in 2017 and his nine errors were the fewest since his first full season in the majors in 2008…his seven home runs were the most since he also hit seven long balls in 2014 and his 11 stolen bases were the most since he swiped 15 bags in 2015.

PADRES ON DECK: It was an exciting season in the Padres minor league system as many of the top prospects in the organization provided a glimpse of what they will look like in San Diego.

CIN for PTBNL and cash considerations and spent the entire season in San Diego.• Made his MLB debut on 4/3 at LAD and his first career start on 4/10 at COL…he appeared in a total of 56 games, making 31 starts behind

the plate. • Logged two multi-hit games this season (5/24 at NYM and 6/20 at CHC)…hit his first career double on 5/24.• Hit a bases-clearing triple for the first three-bagger of his career on 7/26 vs. NYM…set a career-high three RBI in the game, and it was his

sole multi-RBI game of the season…his triple was his first and only hit with the bases loaded.• Hit safely in five of six games from 6/11-21, batting .353 (6-for-17) with a double and an RBI.• Had a career-high three-game hitting streak from 6/19-21, going 4-for-8 (.500) in that time…also set his career high on-base streak at six

games from 6/11-21.• Caught 310.2 innings this season and 25 complete games…made only two errors over the course of the season, owning a .993 fielding

percentage.• His 25 total bases this season were the sixth-most among rookie National League catchers.

2017 Summary• Split the season between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego, appearing in a career-high 119 games.• Acquired by the Padres on 5/8 from the Cubs in exchange for RHP Justin Hancock.• In his first start as a Padre on 5/10 at TEX, he matched his career high at the time with three hits…his infield single in the top of the fourth

inning with Erick Aybar on second base ended RHP Yu Darvish’s string of holding opponents to 0-for-36 with runners in scoring position, which dated back to September 2016, the longest stretch since Charlie Hough limited hitters to 0-for-35 with RISP in 1989 (STATS Inc.).

• Drew 32 walks with the Padres this season, which bested his previous career high of 14 walks in 2016…walked in four consecutive games from 6/21-30, setting a career high walk streak…his three walks on 6/6 at ARI also set a career high in a game.

• On 7/21 at SF, he entered the game as part of a double switch in the fourth inning and went 4-for-5, including an 11th-inning single that drove in the go-ahead run in the Padres’ 12–9…per ELIAS, the last MLB player to have four hits and a game-winning RBI in a game he did not start was the Phillies’ Chris Coste on 8/26/08 vs. NYM…no San Diego player had ever accumulated more than three hits off the bench in one game.

• His four hits on 7/21 also set his career high in a game…with two singles, a double and a triple, Szczur was a home run short of hitting for the cycle…to date, no player in MLB history has ever hit for the cycle after not starting the game.

• From 7/14-28, his .522 on-base percentage post All-Star break was the highest of any qualifying batter in the majors (STATS Inc.)…finished the season with a .365 on-base percentage after the All-Star break

• Hit a career-high 11 doubles with San Diego, and he was four hits shy of tying his career high of 48, which were both set in 2016.• His seven pinch-hit base hits and his two pinch-hit doubles were the most on the team this year.• His 20 appearances and 141.0 innings in center field set his career high in a season…had a career-high two assists this season (both in

center field).
