Marco Olivas Aguirre Memorial Scholarship

Description: TheMarcoOlivasAguirreMemorialScholarshipisacompetitivescholarshipthatprovidesgraduatingseniorswithfinancialsupporttofurthertheireducationalgoalsbeyondhighschool.ThefundisestablishedinthememoryofaMapletonEarlyCollegegraduatewhopassedawayin2016.

MarcoOlivasAguirrewasborninMexico,whereasayoungtoddlerhedevelopedapersistentfever,thecauseofwhichhisfamilydoctorscouldnotdiagnose.Aftermanyvisitstomultipledoctors,hisparentsweretoldtoprepareforhisdeath.Instead,theyresolvedtobringhimtotheUnitedStates.WhentheyarrivedinColoradoandtookhimtoChildren'sHospital,hewasdiagnosedwithararemedicalconditioncalledHyperIgMSyndrome,asevereautoimmunedisorder,andreceivedthemedicalassistancenecessarytosavehislife.Hefacedremarkablechallengesfromayoungage,includingnumerousmajorsurgeries,severerespiratoryinfections,stuntedphysicalgrowth,andtheneedtobreathewiththeassistanceofoxygen.ThesechallengesonlymadeMarcostronger.Hewasatalentedandmotivatedstudent,alwaysworkinghard,askinglotsquestions,readingvoraciously.Helovedlearning.Healsolovedtoplayvideogames,helpouthisfamilyathome,andespeciallylovedcaringforhisbabybrother.Hewasastudentwhohadimmensepotentialanddesiretopositivelyimpacthiscommunity.Duringhighschool,hedevelopedadesiretostudybiologysothathecouldpursueacareerthatwouldallowhimtohelpotheryoungpeoplewhohadseveremedicalconditions.HewasimmenselygratefultotheUnitedStatesforquiteliterallysavinghislife,andhehadadeepdesiretogiveback.Recognizedforhispassionandpotential,thecommunityralliedaroundanonlinefundraisingcampaigntohelphimattendFrontRangeCommunityCollege.Hepassedawaysuddenlyfrommedicalcomplicationsinthewinterof2016.
