RANKIN BECOMES GO-TO-GUYSophomore running back Justin Rankin caught nine passes against Bowling Green, the most by a KentStateplayerinthelast16games.Healsohadaseason-long33-yardrun.OnKentState’ssecondhalf touchdown drive, Rankin made three different catchesforfirstdowns.

On Kent State’s 14-play, 75-yard scoring drive against Miami, Rankin kept the chains moving with a pair of clutchthirddowncatches.Thenon3rd-and-goal,Rankincaughtafour-yardTDpassfromBollastofinishthedrive.

LOOKING SHARP IN SPURTSThe Flashes’ defense forced back-to-back drives of negativefiveyardsagainstBowlingGreen,includingonethatstartedwithafirst-and-goal.Inthesecondandthirdquarters,theFlashescom-binedfor132rushingyards.Kent State out-gained the Falcons 114-17 in total yardsduringthesecondquarter.

Paul Haynes is in his fifth season as head coach at Kent State University and his 12th season affiliated with the program.HayneswasintroducedastheGoldenFlashes’21st head football coach onDec. 18, 2012, 25 yearsafter he walked on to play football at Kent State as a collegefreshman.In2016,11GoldenFlashesearnedspotson theAca-demic All-MAC Team, while Nick Cuthbert became the second player during the Haynes era to earn Academic All-America honors inmultiple seasons. FourFlashesearned all-conferencehonors includingNajeeMurray,whowas selected to play in the Tropical Bowl. The2016seasonincludedavictoryoverbowl-boundCentralMichigan, the program’s biggest comeback victory since 2003 and the program’s second win in Mount Pleasant since1976.

OnOct. 3, 2015,Haynes be-came Kent State’s first head coach to win back-to-back homecominggamessinceDonJames in 1973. By season’send, five Flashes were named to the All-MAC Team, 14 earned Academic All-MAC honors and five were named MACDistinguished ScholarAthletes.Forthefirsttimein

InMay of 2014,Dri Archer became just thefifth Kent State player since 1974, to be selected in one of thefirstthreeroundsof theNFLDraft.Following the 2014 season, 10 Golden Flashes earned spots on the Academic All-MAC Team, including Ital-iano, who was named to the Academic All-America First Team.
