Welcome to the Jewish Community Foundation’s 2017 Annual Report. We hope you will take some time to review this document and

appreciate some of the truly extraordinary activity taking place in our community.

Our work helps to ensure that the Jewish community of today will be sustained for future generations. We had a successful year in

working towards that goal. The Foundation finished 2017 with $55 million in assets under management. New contributions to the

Foundation in 2017 exceeded $8 million, and grants from discretionary and donor directed funds provided more than $4.8 million in

charitable support locally, nationally, and in Israel. All that we do is possible only because of you — our volunteer leaders, our donors,

and our professional team.

The Jewish Community Foundation grew in other important ways as well. We launched our small grants program in August to respond

more efficiently to the needs of the local Jewish community, and in 2017, awarded nine small grants totaling $16,000. We made security

grants for the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus, and responded nationally with Hurricane Relief funding.

Together with our twelve local partners, we celebrated the success of the second year of LIFE & LEGACYTM, which secured more than 600

end-of-lifetime financial commitments with an estimated future value of nearly $22.3 million – helping secure the future prosperity of our

local Jewish community.

We are grateful to everyone who has placed their trust in the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Phoenix. Thank you for your

support, for allowing us to help fulfill your charitable goals and manage your philanthropic legacy, and for sharing our vision of a vibrant,

enduring Jewish community.

Concert pianist Mona Golabek performed her book “The Children of Willesden Lane”, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. It is the poignant story of her mother’s courageous escape at age 14, from Nazi-controlled Austria on the Kindertransport, her new life at the Willesden Lane Orphanage in England and her dreams of becoming a pianist. A JCF grant to the Phoenix Holocaust Survivors’ Association and Generations After provided funding for her performance and the Willesden Reads program, which incorporates the book in lesson plans for middle school, high school and college students.

Hurricane Relief Fund When a series of deadly hurricanes swept through the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean, the Foundation utilized grant funding to help JFNA’s disaster relief campaign. The Foundation matched every gift made to the JFNA’s emergency disaster relief campaign through the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix up to $20,000. “It would have been easy to simply send a $20,000 check to the Federation, but the Foundation wanted to involve the Valley’s Jewish community in the fundraising effort,” according to Rich Kasper, JCF President and CEO.

Campus Security Grant $45,000The Foundation approved two grants totaling $45,000 for campus security at the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus, a portion of which will

specifically enhance safety for students, staff and parents at Pardes Jewish Day School.

The Foundation launched its Small Grants Process, which allows local organizations to apply for grants of up to $5,000 on a rolling basis. Created to simplify applications and expedite funding, this new process allows the Foundation to be more responsive to the community’s time-sensitive needs and opportunities. Successful applicants may receive funding in a matter of weeks rather than months.

They met leaders from Child Crisis AZ, St. Vincent de Paul and UMOM Watkins Women’s and Family Shelter, and learned how basic needs are being met locally and in Israel.

All 12 LIFE & LEGACY partners received $10,000 incentive grants for reaching their year two goals.

In their second year of the four-year LIFE & LEGACYTM program, our 12 partners listed on the next page are well on their way to securing their organization’s futures. Launched in 2015 in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, the program provides training and incentive grants to our local partners.

LIFE & LEGACY motivates Jewish organizations to secure legacy gifts, steward donors, and integrate legacy giving into the charitable culture of the Jewish community. The program enabled

our partners to secure 50 or more end-of-lifetime gifts, which are held and invested as permanent endowments by the Jewish Community Foundation.

On May 9th, our community joined together in celebration of exceeding our year 2 goal by securing 628 legacy commitments and all teams received their second $10,000 incentive grant. To make a legacy commitment for any of our Jewish community partners, contact the organization or the Jewish Community Foundation.

Dr. Rima and the staff, recognized that her motor coordination and muscular ability were intact and that she possessed the cognitive and emotional ability to walk. After almost a year of work, Mayan is walking everywhere and she also communicates with an ipad. Funded by a Foundation grant, Hettena provides medical supervision for children ages 4-21 with severe disabilities.

The B’nai Tzedek Youth Philanthropy Program is redefining what it means to be a Jewish philanthropist by showing young people that they have the power to make change in the world through a personal and engaged relationship to lifelong giving. Considered a national model for youth philanthropy, this program is a tool for teens to give tzedakah, deepen their commitment to social action and be part of a program that models youth leadership.

During the Tikkun Olam tour, where teens learn about local non-profit organizations, they visited St. Vincent de Paul and learned about the vital work SVDP does to address food insecurity, unemployment and education. Then teens spent time packing emergency food bags for distribution.

Carob Tree Annual support for the Jewish Community Foundation, $18,000 or more

The very essence of the Jewish Community Foundation is exemplified by the ancient parable of Honi and the carob tree: One day, Honi came upon a man planting a carob tree. Honi asked the man, “How long will it take for

this tree to bear fruit?” The man replied, “Seventy years.” Honi then asked, “And do you think you will live another seventy years and eat the fruit of this tree?” The man answered, “Perhaps not. But I was born into a world planted with many carob trees by my father and grandfather. Just as they planted for me, I plant for my children and grandchildren, so they can eat the fruit of these trees.”

Just as the Jewish Community Foundation supports the life of our community, the daily work of the Jewish Community Foundation would not be possible without the support of our donors, whose generosity we recognize in the following categories of our Tree of Life Society.

Wise Aging participants from groups across the Valley, had the oppor-tunity to come together to share their experiences of their year-long journey.

Finding her way geographically could be a challenge, but Helen Pezdirtz certainly had direction when it came to how she lived her life. She lived each day making a difference and making new friends. Helen wrote in her Endowment Book of Life statement in 2010, the words of Hillel:

“If I am not for myself, who will be for me; if I am only for myself, who am I; if not now, when?” She shared: “I believe that I am obligated to take responsibility for myself and by doing so I have been in a position to give of myself through my 30 years of service at John C. Lincoln Hospital, as well as, financially assisting charity. Through my gift of time I have received a gift as well that has come back to me tenfold in terms of a ‘Helper’s High.’“

Helen felt it was important to provide for future generations through an endowment that will be ongoing. She created an endowment at the Jewish Community Foundation. Of course, her beloved John C. Lincoln Hospital was a priority, but she was not sure what other organizations to support. Her professional advisor recommended an organization and knew that firsthand experience was important. Foundation staff invited Helen to a Gesher Disability Resources Simchat Shabbat, and Helen was moved to tears when she witnessed firsthand the impact her future endowment could have for this organization and the individuals it serves.

The Helen Pezdirtz Endowment Fund benefits a variety of social services and health care organizations, including Gesher Disability Resources, Jewish Family and Children’s Service and John C. Lincoln Hospital.

At 87 years old, Helen loved walking every day, reading the newspaper, eating out, visiting with friends and a good cocktail.

According to her son Marc, “my mom was exceptionally passionate about life and consistently expressed gratitude for all that filled it. She enjoyed spending time with those who were close, volunteering, traveling, and practicing both physical and spiritual health. She had a tremendous appetite for learning and new experiences. She was one of the more intrepid people I’ve known and seldom walked away from a challenge. She also rarely passed on an opportunity to share advice or perspective.” She will be greatly missed and forever appreciated by many for her friendship, energy, wisdom and contributions to the community.

Helen Pezdirtz died on December 1, 2017.

Eva Hubschman (known to her friends as “Eve”) was born in Budapest, and came to the U.S. on her father’s arm when she was 5 years old. Arriving in New York without the sponsorship of any organization, “we were on our own, with very little money, since we came over on borrowed funds,” she wrote in an article for Beautitudes. As an only child, she was always very close to her parents, especially her mother. With the exception of one cousin who lives in Israel, all of their family perished in the Holocaust.

Eve was intelligent and accomplished, having earned a master’s degree from Columbia University and a doctorate in speech pathology. She taught at Montclair State College, ran a clinic for children with speech and developmental disabilities, was a writer, and for a time, served as secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. According to her great–nephew Zev Wainberg, she was a feminist before feminism was “a thing,” and refused to give in to the idea that women do not work.

Upon retirement, she and her late husband, Dolf, moved to Phoenix in 1986. They were not wealthy, but Eve led a rich life, enjoying opera and book clubs, writing articles for “Senior Correspondent,” and the Beatitudes newsletter. She regularly attended Beth El Congregation.

Late in life, Eve inherited wealth, but claimed she never really felt that it was hers. “Eve was extraordinarily thrifty and didn’t want to spend money on herself. Her goal was to leave the majority of her money to charity,” shared Wainberg. She felt her inheritance gave her both an opportunity and an obligation to be as charitable as she wished she could have been when she was younger. With assistance from the Jewish Community Foundation, Eve established the Eva and Dolf Hubschman Endowment Fund, to provide annual support for the organizations and causes that mattered most to her during her life.

Eve was a passionate Zionist, so her endowment supports accurate reporting about Israel, pro-Israel education, and the Jewish National Fund. Many of Eve’s other favorite organizations also will receive annual contributions from her endowment fund, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, the ACLU Foundation, the Anti-Defamation League, Doctors Without Borders, Planned Parenthood, and Beth El Congregation.

Eve Hubschman died August 11, 2017, one month after her 97th birthday.

Forward Thinkers - Leaders in Philanthropy

For thousands of years, the Jewish people have taken responsibility for the survival and well-being of our community and the world through education, tzedakah and acts of loving kindness. We assume this responsibility for ourselves, our families and for countless others whom we will never meet, knowing that our

actions today will impact tomorrow. With heartfelt appreciation, we acknowledge the individuals, families, foundations and estates whose contributions prove that philanthropy is a powerful agent of change and indispensable to the future of our community.

“With my master’s degrees

from the University of Arizona, I hope to be able to study the healthcare systems of countries around the world. I am a firm

believer that a country’s greatness should be measured upon how well that country cares for its vulnerable populations, such as children, women and immigrants. If it wasn’t for the kind acts from donors such as you, I would not be able to continue pursuing my educational goals here at the University of Arizona. I have already accomplished more than I could have imagined and wish to continue educating myself to be able to use my knowledge to help those marginalized communities that are often forgotten amongst the many issues that our society faces.

Dear Generous Donors,

“Words cannot express our gratitude for your kind gift that afforded ‘Emma’ the opportunity to attend overnight camp this summer. Without you she never would have had the chance as we are her legal guardians and are on a fixed income. She had the time of her life and memories that will last a lifetime. I was also afforded the opportunity, years ago, to attend camp by generous donors, an experience that I hold dear four decades later! Thank you for this mitzvah.”

“In the beginning the hardest thing was my sense of self. I was scared to be seen. Hillel -The Right To Choose helped -- I met friends there, people like me. Hillel supplied support for living on my own, and scholarships to get a first, and now a second academic degree. Today I’m independent, with my own business teaching women basic car mechanics. For me it’s both a business and a vital social mission - showing women they can succeed at anything. I’m certainly no longer scared to be seen.” ~ Tehilla Deutsch

Despite a penchant for computers and all things electronic, Lital never pursued higher education in this field. Unsure of herself and her abilities, she didn’t pursue higher education at all. Following her army service, she worked at a string of administrative jobs that did not provide personal satisfaction, prospects for a long-term career or social benefits.

After learning more about “Securing Israel’s Future through Employment” she applied and was accepted to the program, completed her studies and graduated with a prestigious certificate from Ness College. ITWorks helped her apply to several open positions, but in the end she found her first job on her own as a manager of data system implementation projects at a computer company. Her financial situation is much more secure, as is her sense of herself as a competent, capable professional woman. Lital said “the program opened up my appetite to learning – and I never want to stop learning and advancing.”

- Lital Lotem, participant in ITWork’s Securing Israel’s Future Through Employment

Ariela Ben-Dor and Amanda Campbell, co-principals at Temple Chai’s religious school, hosted their six Hebrew teachers participating in Hebrew through Movement, for dinner and discussion.
