Bella and Carlo
Bella looked up to her big brother, Carlo. Every day, Carlo
went to play basketball with his friends, and Bella tagged along.
One day, she asked if she could play, too. All of his friends laughed
at her. They said that she was too young to play. Bella was so upset,
she ran home.
A little later, though, Bella felt a little better. She realized that
she was not too young to play basketball, but she just did not know
how. When Carlo came home, he told Bella he was sorry. He said
he should have stuck up for her. Bella told him that he could make
up for it. She asked if he would teach her to play basketball.
Bella and Carlo got started the same day. Carlo showed her
how to throw the basketball into the hoop and bounce the ball very
quickly. He told her throwing was called shooting the ball. It was not
long before Bella could shoot like a pro. Next, Carlo showed her
how to guard someone. That means keeping the person with the
ball from shooting. Bella learned quickly how to guard other players.
The pair practiced all week until Bella was totally comfortable.
They went back to the basketball court together ready to take on
anyone, even Carlo’s friends. The players laughed at first, but not for
long. As they played, Bella stole the ball from one of them. She
made her first shot, and many points after that, too. From that
moment on, she could play with anyone.

Ray
New people were moving in next door. Ray's mother asked
him if he could feed his baby sister, while she went over to talk to
them. Ray had never fed his sister on his own before. His mom said
he could do it and he would be fine. Besides, she would be next
door if he needed her. Ray did not know what to do, and he was
worried.
Ray stared at the food and then at his sister. Ray set the bowl
in front of her. His sister looked at the cereal, then to Ray, and then
opened her mouth. Ray pushed the bowl closer, but then his sister
started crying. Grabbing the spoon, Ray dipped it quickly in the
cereal. She ate the food and was happy.
All was going well until Ray's sister started to cry again. Ray
tried to feed her, but his sister turned her head and then pushed the
bowl away. Ray didn't know what to do and looked for his mother.
She was still standing at the neighbor's door talking. Ray thought of
how to get his sister to eat. He made train noises and moved the
spoon around. His sister stopped crying and started laughing
because it was silly.
Ray was able to feed his sister all of the cereal. His mother
walked back into the house, and was surprised Ray fed his sister all of
the food. Feeding his sister was not so bad after all. Ray was ready
to relax by himself for awhile watching television.

John
John’s father loved to drink hot tea. John wanted to learn how
to make some. He watched his father boil water for his tea, but he
did not know what to do next. He just knew that it smelled sweet
and spicy. He wanted to make some of his own and try it. He asked
his father to help him make hot tea.
His father showed him the pot to boil the water. John stood
beside him while the steam warmed his face and all of the bubbles
rose to the top. Next, John held the mug while his father filled it.
John picked his own tea bag, and he chose black tea. Black tea is
dark and stronger than green or white teas. His father explained all
the differences while they worked.
His father showed him all of the ways to sweeten tea. He told
John that he probably would not like the tea plain because it would
be too bitter. Therefore, they got some honey, sugar, and milk. Soon
the tea went from a dark black to brown. It looked almost like the
chocolate milk his mother made. John was proud that he helped
make this batch of tea.
John got a cinnamon stick to put in the tea. He used it like a
straw to drink it, since the tea was so hot. It was sweet and good
when they tasted it. John’s father told him that he could make tea
every day.

Hanna and Jake
Hanna’s brother, Jake, was her best friend for a long time.
After school, they always played games and chased each other
around. But when Jake started middle school, he made new friends
and did not want to play with Hanna anymore. His friends were
mean and called her a baby. Hanna missed Jake and was
determined to keep playing with him.
One day, Hanna waited for Jake and the boys after school.
She told them that she would not go away unless they let her play
with them. They laughed, and one of them said he had an idea.
Hanna could join their group if she did something brave. She would
have to climb the big tree near her house. Jake was worried that
Hanna would get hurt. Not even Jake’s friends would climb that
tree.
She marched down the road towards her house and the tree.
Standing at the base of the big tree, the boys gathered around her,
laughing and calling her names. To their surprise, Hanna quickly
clambered up to the first branch. Jake watched as Hanna climbed
up and up without looking down. The boys stopped laughing when
she reached the top. Smiling, Hannah climbed back down and
jumped the last few feet.
Jake put his arm around his sister and hugged her. Hanna had
done a good job, and Jake was proud. The boys were done calling
her a baby. Together, Hanna, Jake, and the boys walked home to
play.

Mara, Jessica, and Andrea
Mara was excited that her birthday was coming up. Her mom
told her that she could have a party with her five best friends from
school. Her parents even said that her friends could sleep over.
Mara was excited to plan a fun party for her friends. She wanted the
party to be great.
Mara made all of the invitations herself. She drew a picture of
a birthday cake and wrote the details inside the cards. She started
planning fun things that they could do. The day before the party,
Mara and her parents rented movies. They also went to the grocery
store to get snacks. They made a list of games they could play.
On the day of her birthday, her friends came over after school.
For dinner, they ordered pizzas to be delivered, and they ate
chocolate cake, which was Mara’s favorite. Her friends surprised her
with great presents. Jessica gave her watercolor paints and Andrea
gave her a book. After dinner, they played board games and
watched a movie. Since it was warm, they slept in a tent outside.
They slept in sleeping bags, so it was like camping.
The girls stayed up late into the night talking and laughing.
Mara was really glad that she was able to spend her birthday with
her good friends. In the morning, Mara’s parents served them
waffles with strawberries. That was her very favorite breakfast to
have. Her friends all told her that it was a fun party.

Anna Anna loved to eat her mom’s chocolate cookies. Her mom
made them fresh every week, and Anna would bring home friends
to taste them. One time, Anna came home from school with a
friend. The two of them smelled the freshly baked treats. They
wanted to eat a bunch of them. Anna’s mom stopped them at the
kitchen door. She said Anna and her friend could not have any
cookies.
Anna was surprised because her mother never said that before.
She asked what was wrong and her mom explained that these
cookies were for a bake sale. The bake sale was being held to help
some poor families. People would buy the cookies for money. Then
the money would be given to these families. Her mom was making a
lot to make more money.
The two girls asked if they could help. Her mom said that they
could help put cookie dough on the trays and fresh cookies on
paper plates. The girls washed their hands and began to help. They
each got two spoons from the drawer. They would use these to
scoop the dough onto the trays. Then they helped put baked
cookies on plates to give away. The kitchen was a busy place all
evening.
Finally all the cookies were ready for the sale. Her mom
thanked the two girls and told them they did a great job helping
other people. She told them there was a surprise in the dining room.
When they walked in, they saw a plate of cookies. Next to the plate
were two big glasses of milk. The girls finally got their treat for the
day.

Dan and Ella
Dan and Ella loved making big family breakfasts. They got up
extra early on the weekends, so there would be time to cook for
Mom and Dad. Before they did anything else, Dan and Ella turned
on music. They loved to dance almost as much as they loved
cooking. Music in the kitchen made cooking even more fun.
First, Dan got the eggs out of the refrigerator. He broke them
open and poured them into a bowl, and added milk to make the
eggs fluffy. He mixed the eggs and the milk together with a fork.
Dan poured the eggs into the frying pan to cook them. Dan stirred
the eggs to keep them from burning.
Next, Ella got out the pancake mix. Ella had made pancakes
before, but she read the instructions just to be sure she knew what to
do. She combined the pancake mix, milk, eggs, and a little
cinnamon. She mixed all the ingredients together and got out a
pan. The pancake batter sizzled as it cooked. Ella flipped the
pancakes until they were brown. Then she put the finished ones
onto a plate for everyone.
Before long, delicious smells filled the house. Dan and Ella’s
parents woke up, sniffed the air, and smiled at the thought of a
good breakfast. They knew that their children had made a
wonderful breakfast again. Their Mom and Dad went downstairs
and said good morning. They read the paper and had some juice.
Sometimes they danced to the music until breakfast was ready.
Then the family sat down to enjoy the delicious meal.

Anna
Anna would like to find a job. She is old enough to work, and
would like some money to spend on clothes and music. She has an
allowance, but it is not much. Anna is not sure where to find a job.
She does not know where to begin to look.
Anna has a bicycle which she rides to school every day. After
school, she decides to ride around town. She hopes some of the
shops will have signs that say they are looking for help. If she sees a
sign, she will go in. She will ask about a job there.
Anna sees two signs in town. The first place is a gas station, but
they tell her that she is too young to work there. You must be sixteen
years old to pump gas. Anyone who works at the station must be at
least sixteen. Anna is only fifteen, so she cannot work there. She
stops at the florist shop, which sells flowers. They want a delivery
person, but Anna cannot drive.
Anna goes home and asks her mother what to do. Her mother
tells her that the newspaper has ads where people advertise new
jobs. Anna sits down with the newspaper and a pencil. She circles
an ad for a job at the grocery store. Anna rides her bike to the store.
The manager asks her to start the next day. Anna is very excited to
have a job.

Jill, Jane, and Cara
Jill’s school was having a talent show. Students could sing,
dance, act, or show off any other skill they had and wanted to share
with others. Jill and her best friend Jane were excited. Both girls
loved to sing in the school singing group. They also took dance
lessons on Saturdays. They decided right away to sign up for the
talent show. They wanted to win the prize for the best act.
First, Jill and Jane had to figure out what to do. They decided
that they would sing a song that they had learned over the summer.
Jill’s sister Cara said she could play the piano for them. She would
play and the girls would sing and dance.
Cara learned the music, and Jill and Jane practiced singing
along. They also made up a dance to go with the song. The girls
practiced every day until they had memorized all their movements
and all the song’s words. They also picked out matching shirts to
wear when they performed.
On the day of the talent show the girls were ready. When it
was their turn, Cara started playing the piano and Jill and Jane ran
on stage. They started singing and dancing like they had practiced.
They clapped and twirled to the beat of the song. They
remembered everything, and their act went perfectly. The whole
school cheered when they were done. There were many great acts,
but the girls won the prize!

Tammy and Mr. Wilson
Tammy liked to play outside in the sun every day. She liked
climbing trees and playing in the sand. One day, she went to climb
her favorite tree, but when she arrived the tree was being cut down.
Tammy wanted to know why it was being cut down. She went to ask
the people in the park. No one seemed to know why the tree was
being removed. Tammy just had to do something about the tree.
The next day at school she asked her teacher for help. Mr.
Wilson seemed to know about the city and he told her why they
were cutting the trees down. He said someone was going to build a
house there. In fact, he said a lot of houses would be built. Tammy
asked where she was supposed to play. He said people usually did
not think of that. They were more interested in just building more
buildings.
Mr. Wilson saw that Tammy was sad about the tree. He asked
her what she wanted to do and she thought about it for a very long
time. Then she had an idea. She wanted to plant another tree in the
same area. Mr. Wilson thought it was a great idea. He said he
would get the whole class to help. Together, they all planted the tree
later that week.
Tammy was very happy that everyone helped plant the tree.
She knew that other kids would get to climb it years from now when
Tammy was grown-up. She also knew that planting trees was good
for the Earth. Trees help to make clean air. Tammy felt proud that
she could help other kids. It was something that she had always
wanted to.

Tom and Miss Watson
Tom is eleven years old and he loves playing video games. He
spends more time playing video games than he does studying.
Tom’s parents were never concerned about his grades until one day
his teacher, Miss Watson, sent home a note. She told him to give it to
his parents that night.
The note said Tom was having trouble in math. He needed a
good grade on his next math test. Without a good grade, he would
not pass math, and he would not graduate to the sixth grade. Tom's
dad was very angry when he read the note. He took away Tom’s
video games as a punishment. Tom was upset, but he knew he
deserved it. He had to do better in school or he would be held
back.
The next day, Tom listened carefully to his teacher. He still
struggled because he could not focus on math no matter how hard
he tried. He just did not understand what she was talking about.
After class Tom told Miss Watson how frustrated he was. She said
that Tom should get a tutor to help him. A tutor would help him
study and prepare for the test. Tom’s classmate, Jen, was great at
math and happy to help.
Jen and Tom worked together every day after class. They
discussed the kinds of math problems that would be on the test and
how to solve them. On the day of the test, Tom felt prepared. He
answered the questions on the test easily. He got a passing grade
and was proud of himself. He knew he would pass math and move
to sixth grade. Soon Tom got his video games back, and he was
happy.

Andy
Andy just moved to a place where he could ride a bike. He
had never learned to ride one before, but in this neighborhood, he
would have a chance to learn. He was excited because yesterday
his father bought a new bike. It was the perfect size for Andy. Today
was the day he would learn to ride!
When his father came home, Andy met him at the door.
Together, they went out to the garage. Andy checked to make sure
the bike tires had enough air in them. His father made sure the seat
was the correct height. He asked if Andy was ready to go. Andy
nodded and started rolling the bike out of the garage.
Together they walked the bike over to the park. Andy climbed
on the bike and started pedaling, while his father walked beside him
and held him steady. Suddenly his father let go, and the bike shot
forward. Andy wobbled from side to side before falling over. His
jeans were ripped and his knee started bleeding. The two went
home to get a band-aid.
The next afternoon, Andy decided to try again. He got his bike
from the garage. Using a box, he got on the bike, pedaled slowly,
and fell over. He was not hurt, so he got back on the bike. This time
he focused on going straight, and moved quickly. Andy made it
halfway down the street without a problem. When his father came
home, Andy was riding his bike alone.

Tom, Kevin, and Miss Jackson
Tom wanted to learn to play the piano. His older brother Kevin
had taken piano lessons for two years and could play lots of songs.
Tom asked his mother if he could take piano lessons too. His mother
said she would try to find a teacher. She called Miss Jackson, a
music instructor at Tom’s school. Miss Jackson said that she could
teach Tom.
At the first lesson, Tom learned many things. Miss Jackson
showed Tom how to position his fingers on the piano keys. She gave
him a book about how to read musical notes. There were a lot of
music notes on the pages. Tom realized that learning to play would
not be easy.
When he got home, he asked Kevin for advice. Kevin said that
playing the piano was hard at first, but that practicing every day
would help. The two boys sat at the piano. Kevin showed Tom how
to play a simple song. Tom felt better, because he knew that Kevin
would help him.
Tom made sure to practice the piano every day. Soon, he was
able to play his favorite song. At the end of the school year, Miss
Jackson asked Tom to play in the school concert. He was nervous to
play in front of everyone he knew. He was also excited, though, to
show what he had learned. Tom played a song and Kevin played
one too. Tom was proud to be a good musician like his brother.

Jeff
One day, Jeff was drawing birds using his pencils and paper.
He felt hungry and looked at the clock. He wanted to see how
much longer he had to wait until his mom made dinner. Next to the
clock was his calendar. Jeff suddenly realized that it was Friday.
Saturday, the next day, would be his mom's birthday. He had not
gotten her a present yet!
He thought about going to the store, but it was late. Besides, it
was too far away to go there alone so he had to think of something
else to do. Jeff thought about all the gifts his mom gave him. He
wanted his gift to be special. He had to think of something fast.
Jeff thought about giving her some money. Unfortunately, he
already spent his money on coloring pencils and paper. Usually
when Jeff needed extra money he asked his mom, but he wanted
the gift to be from him. He sat and thought about what he could
give his mom. Suddenly, he looked back at his drawings and got an
idea.
He took out all of his coloring materials and focused. He drew
an enormous box and colored it with all the colors of the rainbow.
Then he drew a very small woman and a smaller boy. He worked on
it all night after dinner. At breakfast, Jeff presented his mom with the
picture. Jeff's mom thought his gift was great. He was glad he had
thought of such a good present.

Tim
Tim does not see snow very often. It only snows about once a
year where he lives and when it does snow, everyone is very excited.
Nobody has to go to school on those days. They go outside to play
in the snow while they can. Usually all the snow is gone by the next
day.
However, one year it snowed very hard. The snow did not melt
the next day. It melted a little and then froze again, and the roads
were covered with ice. The electric lines were also covered with ice.
The power went out and there was no electric heat. The lights were
off and the kitchen stove did not work. It was very dangerous and
difficult to try and survive.
Luckily, Tim and his family had camping equipment. That
equipment was useful when power went out during that storm. They
had a camping stove, a lantern, and canisters of propane that they
could use for heating food. Tim’s mother unpacked all of the things
from the storage box. It was like camping inside their house instead
of a tent.
After that storm, even the sidewalk was covered with ice.
There were icicles hanging from the roof of Tim’s house. Eventually,
the ice on the roads melted, then the ice on the sidewalks, and
finally the ice everywhere melted. The icicles dripped and fell from
the house. The power came back on and his school re-opened. His
parents were happy, but Tim wished for more snow.

Sam and Dan
Sam and his family moved to a new house and town. Sam was
nine years old, and very shy. He was worried that he was not going
to make any friends in this new town. He missed his old friends and
wanted to go back home. He spent all day playing in his own yard.
He looked, but never saw other kids playing in the neighborhood.
Sam needed to find kids his own age to play with. After
spending days playing in his own yard, he finally saw another young
boy running around in the neighborhood. Sam was excited to see
another child, but he felt shy. He reminded himself about his friends
from his old town. Maybe this boy would be like the friends he had
before? He decided to find out and headed towards the boy’s
house.
Sam started to walk towards the boy and waved. The other
boy started running towards Sam but suddenly stopped. Sam was
confused and thought maybe the boy did not see him at first, so he
waved again. The other boy did not seem to notice Sam at all. Now
he turned around and began to run away from Sam. He suddenly
stopped again and ran back towards Sam. Sam wondered what
the boy was doing.
Sam walked up and asked the boy what he was doing. He
learned that the boy's name was Dan. Dan told him there was
going to be a race at school, so he was practicing his running. It
was a partner race and he still needed a partner. Sam became
very excited when Dan told him this. Sam had been the fastest boy
in his old school. The boys became racing partners and soon were
good friends.

Pam
Pam’s mom was going to have a baby. She was excited to
have a new brother or sister. She wished she knew if the baby was a
boy or girl and could not wait to find out. It was difficult to be
patient and wait for the baby. It takes a long time before they are
born. Pam decided to help prepare for when the baby was born.
Pam went shopping for the baby with her mom. There is a lot
needed to take care of a baby. There are cribs for babies to sleep
in, and strollers to push babies in so they can be outside. The store
also had clothes, bibs, and bottles for feeding. Seeing everything
made Pam excited to help with the baby. Her mom said that this
shopping was also helping the baby.
She continued to help at home by making the meals. She
helped her mom stay healthy by picking out vegetables for her to
eat and giving her backrubs. Her mom’s stomach grew bigger and
bigger over time. Soon her mom could not bend over to tie her
shoes. Pam helped her with that, too. Pam’s mom had many
doctor’s appointments and sometimes Pam went with her. Hearing
about the baby’s growth helped Pam be patient.
Finally, the time came when the baby would be born. Pam’s
dad took her mom to the hospital, and Pam stayed overnight at her
grandparents’ house. The next day, Pam’s dad brought her to the
hospital. Pam was so excited to finally see the baby. At the hospital,
there was a big surprise for Pam. Pam’s mom did not have one
baby, she had twins! Pam had a baby brother and a baby sister.

Jane
Jane wanted to learn how to swim. Her mother took her to the
public pool that summer. She did not know how to begin so she
stayed by the steps in the shallow end. She was far too afraid to go
any deeper. Jane asked her mother if she would help her learn. Her
mother agreed to help her by giving her lessons.
The next day, Jane and her mother had their first lesson. She
was excited and nervous all at the same time. When they got to the
pool, her mother told her that they were going to practice kicking.
She led Jane to the edge of the pool to begin. She told her to hold
on while she supported her. She would not let Jane sink to the
bottom. Then she told her to kick her legs to stay afloat.
After a few tries, Jane could hold onto the edge. She could
use her kicking to stay above water by herself. She learned how to
make wide strokes and practiced a lot in the shallow end. She
learned to use her arms to push herself forward. She also learned to
hold herself up in the water. Soon, she paddled short distances in
the pool all by herself. Jane and her mother practiced for the rest of
the summer.
She worked so hard all summer to be a swimmer. Her mother
told her that she was very proud of her progress. By the time school
started, Jane could swim by herself.

David and Jim
David and Jim are twin brothers in the fifth grade. They look so
similar that no one can tell them apart. One day, David was walking
down the hallway at school and two boys came over to talk to him.
Unfortunately, he did not know who they were. After they talked, he
realized they were Jim’s best friends. They had gotten mixed up and
thought that David was Jim.
After school, the two brothers talked about what happened.
Jim thought it was funny, so he began to laugh, but David got very
upset. He did not like being confused with his brother. He needed
to find a way to look different. Maybe if he looked different, people
could tell them apart.
When David got home, he told his Mom what happened. He
asked her what he could do to look different and she said that he
should get a haircut. That way, people would be able to tell them
apart. David thought that a haircut was a good idea. He asked her
where he should go to get one. His mom said he could get a haircut
at the mall.
That evening, his father took him to the mall. They were not
gone long, and when they returned, everyone was waiting to see his
new haircut. Now David did not look at all like his brother. The next
day, everyone was able to tell the twins apart. There would never
be a mix-up again.

Tanner
Tanner was a young boy who lived with his mother. Her
birthday was coming soon, and he thought for a long time about
what to get her. He remembered that she loved getting flowers
from people. So, Tanner decided to get her lots of pretty flowers.
The problem was he did not know where to get them. He needed to
find flowers in time for her birthday.
He first looked for them in a field. The field was next to his house
behind the stream and was a wide, open place with many flowers.
Tanner looked around for awhile, but could not find any good
flowers. The ones he found were too big, smelly, or tall. They looked
pretty when they were in the field. They would not be pretty if he
picked them. Tanner left the field and headed to the next flower
place.
That next place was in the neighbor's garden. Mrs. Martin
always had such beautiful flowers. Mrs. Martin, however, did not like
having Tanner walk around in her garden and got angry when he
did. Mrs. Martin walked out to the garden. She asked Tanner what
he was doing. He explained, and she sent him away. Once again,
Tanner had no flowers for his mother.
Finally, he remembered his mother's garden and decided to
look there. His mother saw those flowers every day, so he wondered
how to make them extra special. He did not want to pluck her
whole garden. So Tanner looked for the best flower in her garden.
He put it in a vase he made at school. He told her the flower was
the best, just like her. She loved it and put it out for everyone to see.
