PRESIDENT’S LETTER

BY: Mimi Davis

I'm very excited about the soon-to-be-announced groundbreaking for the new park at Linda Lake and Williams Rd.  Though we don't have a date for it yet we do have a name.

If you look on a map you can see a creek running through the park which could, in the future, be lovely with ferns and shade- loving plants.  It comes from Delta Lake and is labeled on at least one old map as Delta Creek.  A committee was formed of neighbors from both Grove Park and Ravenwood to name the park and a most obvious name was chosen: Delta Creek Park.  It will look beautiful on the new signage.  Parks & Rec was hoping for a February groundbreaking, but whenever this happens we'll be posting photos on Grove Park's Facebook page.

Another new event that affects us is that we have a new city council District 5 representative.  Dimple Ajmera was chosen by a council vote to be our representative.  She will be the first Asian-American to be on the council and will serve as interim until next December when an elected council person will fill that position. We congratulate her on this new job and will be seeing more of her in the future.

I hope to see you all around the neighborhood in the coming year. Give a thought to joining our book club, garden club, afternoon or evening crafters, or, if you speak Spanish really well, the Hispanic Women's Group which would be delighted to have you.

SAVORY BEET AND GOAT CHEESE TART(This recipe was a big hit at theGarden Club brunch)

• 1 T. olive oil • 1 huge thinly sliced onion (about 2 cups) • Single pie crust of some sort

(bought or home-made) • 15 oz jar pickled beets, drained • 4 oz herbed goat cheese, dried thyme or

other favorite green herb

Preheat oven to 450 degrees (very hot oven).  Slowly sauté onion in oil until it caramelizes. Put the pie crust in the pan or on an uncreased baking sheet for a more rustic pie. Arrange onions over crust and then beets over onions.  Dot with goat cheese and sprinkle with thyme. If doing a rustic look, fold the edge of the crust back over the filling to make an edge. Bake 20 minutes.

EAST CHARLOTTE HAS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A REAL SPARK…THANKS TO GROVE PARK NEIGHBOR CHRIS MAU!

We have all seen the blight on the corner of Independence Blvd. and Albemarle Road around a building known as the Varnadore.  It has served as an anchor in the east Charlotte community for 50+ years. The neglected and undesirable property now has a chance to improve the quality of life for all Charlotteans.  A group called Our Local (spearheaded by our local neighbor Chris Mau) is currently fostering an initiative to redevelop the property. The redevelopment of the Varnadore property will support:

• Beautifying the property without destroying its history • Decreasing crime and eliminating waste dumping at the property • Eliminating neglect, creating a positive beacon for the City of Charlotte • Facilitating easy access to affordable, fresh, organic food • Creating amenities including coffee shops, local organic grocery stores, restaurants, office space, and community-oriented spaces • Attracting grass-roots based, cutting edge technology • Promoting gardening, the arts, and education.

A lot of good publicity for east Charlotte would come from this, encouraging more development. People would see how a community can work together with civic mindedness, innovation, entrepreneurship, and talent. This privately funded project could be a major win for east Charlotte. Our Local is a for-profit humanitarian initiative interested in the economic, social, and environmental benefit of society. Their mission is to lead by example, developing systemic changes through economic and social empowerment; to incubate and accelerate ideas, inventions, organizations, and help redevelop communities. To learn more, go to our ourlocal.com.
