Fordham Football Adds New Teammate -Jonah Shainberg Becomes A Ram

Despite the fast start to the 2013 season, the Rams were still looking for new players. One such player joined the team on September 12 last fall as 12-year-old Jonah Shainberg was officially adopted by the Rams through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Shainberg and his fa-ther, Joshua, attended practice on Thursday where they got to see the Rams as they prepared for their game with Tem-ple in Philadelphia on Saturday. At the end of practice, head coach Joe Moorhead called Jonah out to midfield to meet the team and then had the squad run a play where Jonah took the ball from quarterback Mike Nebrich and raced 60 yards for the score. The team met Jonah in the end zone and carried him to the locker room on their shoulders. In the locker room, Michelle DeIeso, Executive Director, and Katie Johnson, Adoption Coordinator, from the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation spoke to the team before handing the floor over to Jonah. He explained the history of his illness to the team and spoke of how excited he was to be involved with the Rams.

Jonah led the team breakdown and the four c a p t a i n s led Jonah to his lock-er, which w a s f u l l o f F o r d -ham foot-ball gear, inc luding t - s h i r t s ,

sweatshirts, hats and a signed football. While the players showered for dinner, Jonah went to the football offices where Moorhead spent time showing him how the Rams break down film from the games for the coaches. Following an interview with News 12 Bronx, Jonah was escorted by the captains to The Marketplace for dinner. Jonah, a student at The Child School on Randall’s Island, was diagnosed with a brain tumor six years ago and underwent numerous treatments for two years. The tumor caused Jo-nah to suffer a stroke, which left the right side of his body weakened. He is undergoing therapy to regain control of his right side. “Th i s was a tremendous hon-or for our team,” said Moorhead. “We are thrilled to be able to add a person like Jo-

nah to our roster. He has been through so much in life and maintains such a positive attitude. We are looking forward to having him with us in meetings and on the sidelines and will look to him for inspi-ration as the year goes on.” The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, a 501(c)(3), non-profit, charitable or-ganization that improves the quality of life for chil-dren suffering with pe-diatric brain tumors and their families. FOJ is all about love, support, and friendship. FOJ matches a child with a college or high school sports team

based on geographic lo-cation. Once the team and child have been matched,

there is a ceremonial adoption. The child is surrounded by 20 or 30 new friends that rally around him or her. A deep bond is formed between the child, the child’s family and the sports team. The relationship is a priceless gift. The gift is in the relationship; a child is gaining a loving support network and the team is gaining an insight into the value of life and the power of love. The result of this connection is mutual respect, support, friendship and love.

THEFORDHAM AX

As the Fordham Rams take the field on game day you'll notice that one of the players will be carrying an ax, a prop that former head coach Joe Moorhead uses to motivate the troops. The ax, first brought out in his first season at Fordham, is there to remind the players that when Abraham Lincoln was asked if he was given six hours to chop down a tree what would he do and he responded that he would spend the first five hours sharping the ax. It's to show the players that preparation is as im-portant as execution.

• Fordham senior running back Chase Edmonds has already become the Fordham and Patriot League career rushing yard leader with 5,677 yards and has set school career marks for both touchdowns (72) and rushing touchdowns (65).• Edmonds broke Kirwin Watson's school career rushing record of 4,617 yards and Jordan Scott’s (Colgate) Patriot League record of 5,621 yards.• He also broke the Patriot League career touchown and rushing touchdown records.• Edmonds has the top two single season rushing marks, setting the school record with 1,838 as a rookie in 2014 and then rushing for 1,648 last season.• Edmonds also has the two best rushing touchdowns seasons for the Rams, scoring 23 times as a freshman and 20 times on the ground in 2015.• Edmonds’s Patriot League record 359-yard rushing performance vs. Lafayette last October 8 was his sixth career 200-yard game, tops all-time at Fordham, while he also has 18 career 100-yard games.

College Football Game 76 Years Ago

On September 30, 1939, Fordham hosted Waynesburg College at Triboro Stadium on Randall’s Island. The game was the season opener for the Rams, who beat Waynesburg, 34-7. Announcer Bill Stern called the contest over station W2XBS (now WNBC) as a demonstration of this new medium at the World’s Fair. Two iconoscope cameras, which had just been patented by RCA, were used to televise the game with the images

being sent to a relay station 10 miles from the stadium and then, by cable, to the top of the Empire State Building, where a large transmitter broadcast the game to the lucky few who owned a television in those days. A top-of-the-line set in 1939, a Clifton, sold for about $600.

Notable Fordham players who appeared in the game include Len Eshmont and Dominic Principe, who went on to play in the professional ranks, as well as Ralph Friegden, father of former Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen, who scored twice in the game and Donald Lambeau - son of Green Bay Packer legend Earl Louis "Curly" Lambeau.

FORDHAM SETS & RESETSSCHOOL RUSHING RECORDS

• In the Rams’ 83-21 win over Elizabeth City State University on September 10 last fall, Fordham set a new school record with 393 rushing yards in the game, bettering the old mark of 379 set last year against Lehigh.• That record didn’t last long, however, as Fordham shattered that mark, gaining 516 rushing yards in the win over Lafayette on October 8.• In the Elizabeth City game, three Rams rushed for over 100 yards, led by Chase Edmonds, who picked up 155 yards on 16 carries.• D’Angelo Palladino (116 yards on 19 carries with one touch-down) and Kendall Pearcey (115 yards on 12 carries with two scores) also went over 100 yards.• It is believed to be the first time the Rams have had three 100-yard rushers in a game.• In the Lafayette game, Edmonds rushed for a school and Patriot

League record 359 yards and four scores. He bettered his own Patriot League and school mark of 347 yards set last year against Lehigh.

TAKE IT AWAY• The 2016 Fordham Rams were adept at forcing turnovers, ranking first in the Patriot League in turnover margin (1.40) and turnovers gained (26)• Nationally the Rams were seventh in turnover margin and 12th in turnovers gained.• This year the Rams have forced 16 turnovers (nine interceptions and seven forced fumbles), including five against nationally-ranked Eastern Washington and four against Lehigh.• Fordham is second in the Patriot League in turnover margin (0.40).

FORDHAM ONE OF 4 FCSTEAMS WITH 2 FBS WINS SINCE 2013

• The Fordham University Rams are one of four NCAA FCS teams to have two wins over an FBS opponent since 2013, joining North Dakota State (who has four FCS wins over that span), Bethune-Cook-man and Portland State.• The Rams were also one of eight to have a win over an NCAA FBS school in 2015.

THE FORDHAM CAPTAINS• Fordham will be represented by four captains in 2017: graduate student quarterback Kevin Anderson, senior running back Chase Edmonds, graduate student defensive lineman Manny Adeyeye and senior defensive back Caleb Ham.• Anderson is serving as a captain for the third straight year, becoming the first Ram in the modern era to be a three-time captain.

THIS IS FORTY• Fordham has scored 40 or more points 26 times since 2012.• The 83 points scored by the Rams against Elizabeth City State on September 10, 2016 was a Patriot League record.

The 2017 Season

Fordham 6Army West Point 64September 1, 2017 - Michie StadiumTrying to solve the Army West Point football triple-option offense is like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube. Just when you think you’ve got it, you find out you’re far from done. Such was the case for the Fordham University squad tonight as they couldn’t solve the Black Knights’ flexbone offense as the Rams dropped the season opener, 64-6, at Michie Stadium. Takeaways*Fordham lost its season opener for the second straight year (the Rams lost at Navy last year) after winning four straight season openers from 2012-2015. *Army West Point blocked a field goal and returned it 75 yards for a score in the second quarter, giving the Black Knights a 24-0 lead. *The game was a polar opposite contest from the last time the two team met when Fordham knocked off Army West Point, 37-35, in the season opener back in 2015. *Quarterback Kevin Anderson returned to the site of his first collegiate start. He completed 26 of 38 passes for 233 yards. *The Rams led the Patriot League and ranked seventh in turnover margin last year and forced one fumble tonight. *Fordham is now 20-8 in non-conference play over the past four years.

GAME 2

Fordham 38Central Conn. 31September 9, 2017 - Arute FieldWhen a player goes down, the Fordham University football Rams are firmly entrenched in the philosophy of “Next Man Up”. Well today that philosophy was put to the ultimate test as the Rams were without the services of numerous starters, including senior running back Chase Edmonds who was sidelined with an injury in the second quarter, but multiple Rams stepped up to lead the squad to a 38-31 come-from-behind win over Central Connecticut State University on Arute Field. Among the players to step up for the Rams today were junior Andrew Prince, playing in place of an injured Austin Longi, who hauled in a pair of touchdown passes; freshman running back Zach Davis, playing not far from his hometown where he won Connecticut State Player of the Year honors last fall, who rushed nine times for 70 yards; sophomore center Marcel Deya, who made his first career start; and freshman linebacker Glenn Cunningham, another Connecticut native, who started for the Rams and made five total tackles, including 0.5 for loss. The Rams, who led the Patriot League last year in turnover margin, took advantage of a big Blue Devil turnover today as junior Lawrence Menyah stepped in front of a Jake Dolegala pass and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown with 1:27 remaining to break a 31-31 tie.

GAME 3

The 2017 Season

E. Washington 56Fordham 21

The Fordham University football squad got some bad news before the Rams kicked off today’s game with 12th-ranked Eastern Washington University when they found out they would be without the services of All-American running back Chase Edmonds. The day didn’t get much better from that point as the Eagles’ defense stymied the Rams on Jack Coffey Field. Edmonds, who missed his first ever Fordham game, wasn’t the lone Ram sidelined today as senior offensive lineman Ben Hartman missed his first game since 2014 and junior wide out Austin Longi missed his second straight game.Takeaways*The last home loss for the Rams was to Villanova on September 12, 2015.*The game was Fordham’s first against a team from the Big Sky conference and the first time the Rams played an opponent from west of the Mississippi River since they hosted the University of San Francisco at Triboro Stadium in 1951.* Anderson’s 191 passing yards brings his career total to 6,596, third best all-time at Fordham, while his two touchdown passes brings his career total to 64, also third best at Fordham (two behind Mike Nebrich for second and five away from John Skelton’s school record).*Senior linebacker Niko Thorpe saw his first action of the year today. He switched to uniform number 21 to honor Jarred Brevard, who suffered a season-ending injury last week.

GAME 4

Fordham 40BRYANT 45

With the official change of seasons occurring on Friday, the Fordham football squad hoped that its luck, especially with injuries, would change on Saturday. But that was not the case as, despite five touchdowns passes from Kevin Anderson, the Rams fell to Bryant University, 45-40, at Beirne Stadium. Fordham was once again without the services of All-American running back Chase Edmonds, who missed his second game with an injury, and also was without starting defensive back Jesse Bramble, who missed the game with an injury. Anderson completed 27 of 42 passes for 366 yards and the five touchdowns, tying his career-high for touchdown passes in a game. The five scoring strikes give Anderson 69 for his career, tying him with John Skelton for the Fordham career record while the 366 passing yards was Anderson’s ninth career 300-yard game and the fourth best game in his Fordham career. Anderson’s favorite receiver was tight end Isaiah Searight, who caught seven passes for 133 yards and two scores, all career-bests, while Corey Caddle hauled in seven passes for 82 yards and one score and Andrew Prince grabbed six passes for 52 yards and two scores. On the ground, freshman running back Zach Davis rushed for 119 yards on 21 carries.

GAME 5

The 2017 Season

Yale 41Fordham 10

The good news for the Fordham football squad was on the Rams’ first offensive play from scrimmage a familiar face was in the backfield as senior All-American running back Chase Edmonds returned to action after missing the past two games. The bad news for the Rams was that Edmonds’ return was thwarted by Yale, who upended Fordham 41-10 on Jack Coffey Field. Despite the presence of Edmonds, the Fordham offense couldn’t get on track as the Rams were limited to 300 yards of total offense in the game with Edmonds gaining 83 yards on 16 carries while quarterback Kevin Anderson completed 13 of 28 passes for 140 passing yards, his lowest output of the year.

Takeaways* Freshman running back Zach Davis rushed for 50 yards on eight carries and scored his first collegiate touchdown.* Freshman placekicker Andrew Mevis connected on a 31-yard field in the second quarter, his first career collegiate field goal.* Anderson was held without a passing touchdown and he remains tied with John Skelton for the Fordham career record (69).* The Rams dropped their third straight for the first time since the end of the 2011 season.* The loss snaps a ten-game winning streak the Rams had over Ivy League opponents.

Fordham 10Lafayette 14October 7, 2017 - Fisher StadiumThe good news for the Fordham football squad was that they held Lafayette to minus-five yards of rushing today and 193 passing yards, with the exception of one play. Unfortunately for the Rams that one play was a 63-yard, fourth-quarter, scoring pass that proved to be the difference as the Leopards knocked off the Rams, 14-10, in a Patriot League at Fisher Field. The Rams took a 7-0 lead in the second on a 12-yard scoring strike from Kevin Anderson to Austin Longi. The touchdown pass was the 70th in Anderson’s career as he moves out of a tie with John Skelton and into first place on the Fordham career list. Following the Lafayette score with 5:06 remaining, the Rams had two chances at a comeback, the first stopped on downs on the Lafayette ten as Anderson couldn’t connect with Austin Longi in the end zone and the last on the final play of the game as Anderson looked for Jonathan Lumley but the pass was broken up in the end zone.

Takeaways* Kevin Anderson completed 29 of 47 passes for 277 yards, bringing his career totals to 559 completions for 7,379, both third on the Fordham career lists.* The loss snaps a Fordham three-game winning streak in the series with Lafayette.

GAME 7

The 2017 Season

Fordham 12Colgate 38

The Fordham University football team has been wrecked by injuries all season and today was no exception. Playing without the services of graduate student quarterback Kevin Anderson the Rams’ offense couldn’t get on track as Fordham dropped a 38-12 Patriot League decision to Colgate University in Andy Kerr Stadium. Senior running back Chase Edmonds gained 53 yards on 18 carries, leaving him seven yards short of the Patriot League career rushing record. Senior Luke Medlock, who started in Anderson’s place, completed 16 of 32 passes for 215 yards and one score, all career-highs. The Rams fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter as the Raiders took advantage of a short field on the second score and turned a Medlock interception in to a field goal at the halftime buzzer to take a 17-0 lead into the break. Takeaways* The Rams had two long kick returns called back due to penalty (an Austin Longi punt return and Dylan Mabin kickoff return – both in the third quarter).* Freshman wide receiver Hunter Harris and sophomore wide out Joe Ferraro each had his first collegiate reception in the game. Ferraro’s was impressive as he pulled the ball away from a defender for a 29-yard completion on third and 18 from the Fordham 25.

GAME 8

Fordham 17Georgetown 9

In baseball parlance, today’s Fordham-Georgetown Patriot League football game was a pitcher’s duel. But in the end the Ram defense outperformed their Hoya counterparts to lead Fordham to a 17-9 win on Cooper Field. Junior wideout Austin Longi led the offense, hauling in a career-high 13 passes for 150 yards and one score, while freshman Andrew Mevis kicked three field goals to provide all the Fordham scoring. The Rams took a 6-0 lead on a pair of Mevis field goals (a 30-yarder in the first quarter and a 31-yarder in the second) but the Hoyas scored on a 12-yard pass with 3:11 in the half and were ready to take a 7-6 lead. But the extra point attempt was blocked and scooped up by Jesse Bramble who returned it for two points and an 8-6 Fordham lead. The 8-6 score stood until a Georgetown field goal in the third gave the Hoyas a 9-8 lead but the Rams responded with a ten-yard scoring strike from Luke Medlock to Longi to put the Rams up 14-9 with 7:16 left in the third. Takeaways* The Rams played without their starting quarterback (Kevin Anderson), starting running back (Chase Edmonds) and three of their top receivers (Corey Caddle, Jonathan Lumley and Andrew Prince).* The Rams were also without services of leading tackler Glenn Cunningham.

GAME 9

The 2017 Season

Lehigh 35Fordham 45

Even though the game was played on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Fordham head coach Andrew Breiner thought the Rams won the game on a rainy Tuesday. For it was on Tuesday that Fordham was forced by inclement weather to practice inside the Lombardi Center and the Rams came out with an intensity that carried through the week and into today’s game as Fordham knocked off defending Patriot League champions, Lehigh University, 45-35, on Jack Coffey Field. Without the services of All-American running back Chase Edmonds, D’Angelo Palladino did his best Edmonds impersonation, rushing for a career-high 297 yards and three touchdowns. The 297 yards is the third best single game total in school history. The Rams were also without their top four receivers but that didn’t stop quarterback Kevin Anderson from completing 17 of 26 passes for 244 yards and three scores. His favorite receiver was tight end Isaiah Searight who caught eight passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. The 133 receiving yards was five shy of the Fordham school record for a tight end.Takeaways* The Rams held Lehigh wide receiver Troy Pelletier, who entered the game leading the Patriot League in receptions/game (8.7) and receiving yards/game (125.0) to just five catches for 19 yards.* Fordham also held Lehigh quarterback Brad Mayes to 257 passing yards, well below his season average of 353.6 yards/game.

GAME 10

Holy Cross 42Fordham 20

It may have taken a little longer than he wanted as injuries have sidelined Fordham senior All-American ruing back Chase Edmonds at times this year but today he became the Patriot League career rushing leader. But the Rams couldn’t overcome an injury to starting quarterback Kevin Anderson as Fordham dropped the annual Ram Crusader Cup game to Holy Cross, 42-21, in Patriot League action on Jack Coffey Field. Edmonds, who entered the game needing just eight yards to break Jordan Scott’s (2005-2008) Patriot League career rushing record of 5,621, finished with 63 yards on 20 carries to bring his Patriot League rushing record to 5,677. He broke the record on a 27-yard rush on the last play of the first quarter. Edmonds, who also caught one pass for 46 yards, also broke the Patriot League career all-purpose yards record, finishing the game with 7,184 all-purpose yards, breaking the former mark of 7,121 set by Fordham’s Javarus Dudley from 2000-2003.Takeaways* It was only the fifth game this year in which Anderson and Edmonds both started in the Fordham offensive backfield.* Senior Ben Hartman was forced to move from right guard to center due to an injury to starting center Dominic Lombard. Hartman, a starter at center the past two years, has now played at right guard, left guard and center this year.
