PRESIDENTS REPORT

We are now close to half way point of our

year and our programs appear to continue

to be well attended particularly some.

The best news we have received since the

last newsletter has been our lease renewal

at Teal Court for two years post November

by the Ministry of Housing. Many thanks

go to Dianne for her continuous work on

this issue. This will give us breathing space

to continue our programs while assessing

our future needs. It will also give the council time to consider suitable future accom-

modation for Hastings U3A.

John Kelly your Vice President and I attended the Volunteers Network meeting and

received a comprehensive review of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Apparently they have run a number of pilot programs and have made changes

accordingly. Local support will be enlisted to help with the transition. Disability

Services are hoping that people with a disability can volunteer in programs in the

community.

Our recent promotion of bring a friend to your group and or a beautiful afternoon

tea for people who wish to learn more about U3A appears to have gone well with a

number of people signing up on the day of the afternoon tea. A grant from Network

was received in regard to our promotions.

Now the weather is becoming cooler we tend to want to hibernate in the warmth of

our homes but we can become isolated. Being at an activity with friends, having a

good laugh and being physically active are all very beneficial during this time so

wrap up go out and be happy.

Onwards to our next challenge.

IMPORTANT REMINDER TO MEMBERS TO WEAR THEIR

BADGES.

Unfortunately members are not collecting their badges from our

office. As you will appreciate it is not always possible to process

your badge when you join. However, it is necessary for YOU to

make the effort and collect your badge from the office in Teal Court

when it has been completed.

Why do we wear badges? Firstly it displays that you are a financial

member. It also helps others to meet and greet you by name and

also assists the Tutor/Leader to identify you.

Lastly the badge provides information in the case of an emergency. It identifies your

doctor, next of kin etc. Please make the effort to wear it!

WHATS HAPPENING AROUND THE COURSES AND ACTIVITIES

Members response to some courses has been quite slow, especially the new

courses/ activities we included in Term 2.

If you have any ideas for courses and activities we would be pleased to hear

from you. Locating tutors, leaders and venues is becoming the most difficult

aspect of extending our course list. With that in mind, we have been offered

space in Ruby’s Café on High Street, Salvation Army’s building and Peninsula

Parklands. It’s just a matter of making sure the course is suitable for the space

and the day and time can be accommodated by the leader/tutor.

Unfortunately we had to cancel Card Making due to the Tutor’s work

commitments, we would like to include this activity in the future. So if you

know anyone who is capable of taking this activity let us know.

DARTS

We have some good news on this activity. We have

been given two suggested community venues to hold

darts. Before we approach anyone we need to

establish the interest. Please complete the blue form

noting the evenings you would prefer. This will assist

When we approach the management of the venues.

IPAD

Term 2 course had to be cancelled as Natasha

was busy with her teaching commitments,

however she has agreed to conduct two

classes in Term 3. Remember the two classes

will be consecutive Saturdays 10.00 and

11.00am.

TASTY MEALS FOR ONE

We are planning to conduct another

session on quick, easy and inexpensive

meals. This term we will demonstrate

how to make chicken soup and several

ideas using beef mince. Each member

will be issued with several recipe ideas

and participate in a sit down lunch.

Place your name on the list of

expression down at the office or give

the staff a call on 5979 8585.

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT

A number of our members are interested in

selling their homes and moving into the local

retirement villages. Some have expressed

concerns about how this could affect their

pension, what do they do with excess money

after selling their home? Are there any new s

superannuation/pension requirements or

restrictions recently introduced? Do you

understand them?

We are planning an afternoon seminar for you

to attend sometime in August or September.

Gold coin donation to U3A. The venue, day and time will be finalized on the

CPR

You could save a life. Spend 30 minutes of your time

($3.00) to view the

Victorian Ambulance CPR video and learn the technique

using a pillow. This important skill may come in handy.

We are offering two sessions, on different days, so choose

the one that suits you. Check out the dates on the Term 3

Course Sheet. Enrol now.

DIGITAL CAMERA

Having trouble focusing your photos on your digital

camera, well you need our expert Max Hem to show

you the tricks to produce the best images.

Enrolled members will be advised which Wednesday

Max is conducting the class.

registered interest and members notified.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions from the floor or perhaps you

would be more comfortable if we ask for you. Make sure you write the ques-

tion/s down and hand into reception beforehand.

Our speaker is well qualified. James Malliaros is a Senior Financial Planner at

GFM Wealth Advisory and an AFP Professional member of the Financial Plan-

ning Association of Australia (FPA).

James is known to several members of our organization and can be recom-

mended as an ideal speaker.

This is a one off opportunity for you to learn about your financial future. You

are under no obligation…...simply learn to take the right steps.

Register your expression of interest at the office and don’t forget to table your

questions.

LEARNING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT..”MUSIC TO YOUR EARS”

We offered this activity last term however no

members were interested, perhaps you were busy

or not well enough. So this is your chance to tick it

off your bucket list, bite the bullet and learn to play

an instrument.

Our Tutor James has offered to teach interested

members; guitar, banjo, harmonica or fiddle. He

plans to teach on the last two Thursdays of each

month. Venue will be in Hastings. You will be

required to provide your own instrument and music stand. The cost is $5.00 per

session.

Check out time and date in the course sheet and enrol by completing the blue

form available at the office.

FILM DISCUSSION GROUP

Our leader Anna Buchhorn has

agreed to conduct another series of

film evenings in September,

October and November. We appreci-

ate the use of Anna’s home, however

this was always going to be short

term. In the meantime the group has

decided to take turns holding the

sessions. The group has decided to

alter meetings to be held on the 4th

TUESDAY of the above months.

The venue has also been altered as

members attending have agreed to

take turns to use their homes. The leader Anna Buchhorn has advised there is

room for two additional members. So if you are interested the group will meet to

watch a film of “art house cinema” standard and discuss the film afterwards.

Some films may not be in English and will be subtitled. Contact the office for

the leaders details.

CRAFTY HAPPENINGS

This group has commenced,

planned their monthly

meetings, at the Hastings

Library. Copies of the

program is available at our

office in Teal Court. There

are some interesting ideas

planned - making earrings,

knitting for “Kids for Can-

cer”

making scent diffusers, bath

bombs, tea light candle holders and vases as well as a session on Christmas

decorations. Interested? Pick up a program and enrol.

Only $2.00 a session.

ANGLING

We have a small group of men

who meet once a month, discuss

their failures or success in

catching the elusive fish. Perhaps a

tale or two about the one that got

away. Syd and Gail Hulland are

currently holidaying near Broome

and sent a photo of his catch of the

day.

Fishing has gone off this

year…..are you kidding Syd.

QUAFFERS

This activity is always enjoyable and relaxing….wine tasting around the

Peninsula has it’s benefits

Our forthcoming items from the program are:

Friday 22nd September at 12.00 the group are visiting The Epicurean Red

Hill 160 Shoreham Rd, Red Hill.
