A lthough American Eagle Instruments (AEI) opened its business in 1992, our history began in 1948 with the start of American Dental Manufacturing, a family-founded dental hand instrument company that made its mark by providing high quality, durable instruments to the dental profession.
In 1989 a competitor purchased the company and subsequently closed their doors in 1990. Rather than follow the buy-out company, a small group of tenacious and persevering crafts people joined forces in 1992 to form American Eagle Instruments. With engineering experience, unequaled skill, a goal to produce the highest quality dental instruments, and a “lead-not-follow” philosophy, American Eagle Instruments became a reality.
The printing of this catalog marks our 25th Anniversary! AEI has evolved to become the second largest manufacturer of dental hand instruments in North America. Based in Missoula, Montana, and employing in excess of 80 crafts people, we pride ourselves’ on progressive and innovative dental products which allow the practitioner more efficient processes with added ergonomic comfort.
American Eagle Instruments also offers state-of-art surface engineering technology, featuring the XP® line of instruments. Our XP Technology instruments are fabricated using a patented surface engineering process that results in razor-sharp edges that start sharp and stay sharp longer than any carbon or stainless steel instruments. XP Technology reflects the latest innovation in dental hand instruments - providing you with the first instruments that require NO SHARPENING!
AEI offers comprehensive lines of dental products designed for the forward thinking dental professional. Our product lines include diagnostic, curettes, scalers, titanium implant maintenance instruments, composite, restorative, and cone socket instruments. AEI’s latest innovations, made possible and exclusive to XP Technology include: Double Gracey™ instruments - combining two instruments into one, the Boge 513® scaler - a unique hoe and sickle combination, and a full line of Pro Thin® Periodontal instruments with thinner blades and the lightest handle to adapt to a wide range of the toughest challenges, from deep, narrow pockets to tight interproximal contacts.
From product development to manufacturing, AEI employees take extreme pride in their craftsmanship abilities. The AEI team possesses years of hands-on experience in the development and fabrication of dental instruments. We manufacture the highest quality instruments and hold ourselves to the highest standards. We know our customers expect nothing less from a company that delivers “Better Dentistry by Design®.”
Goal• Continue to be the market leader in manufacturing the world’s fi nest dental instruments.

Our patented XP® Technology is used across three of our product lines for two diff erent uses. e fi rst use is as a sharpen-free metal, embedded into our curettes and scalers as well as a specialty line called Double Gracey™instruments. e second purpose is on our composite instruments, as a no-stick surface to place composite.
The Composite LineNo Stick. No Pull. No Kidding.
Made from top-of-the-line stainless steel that has been heat-treated to the highest standards, Talon Tough™ stainless steel instruments were introduced in 1992. e fi rst of a new generation of stronger alloys, Talon Tough has an edge that is sharper and longer-lasting than any other stainless steel instruments on the market.
Quik-Tip® cone socket instruments are available in both Talon Tough™ stainless steel and sharpen free XP® Technology. You can customize your own set up by handle color, create your own instruments and save money by only replacing the tips as they wear.

NO MORE SHARPENING
XP Technology is a patented surface engineering process. is technology is a proprietary process in which the metallurgical composition of the instrument’s surface is enhanced, giving it the properties of a much more durable material. is process allows us to put a much sharper edge onto a thinner blade, eliminating the time-consuming and imperfect process of sharpening your instruments.
The discovery of American Eagle’s XP Technology has revolutionized my daily working life. I am no longer spending time sharpening instruments. The thing that struck me imme-
diately on handling the instruments was how feather light they are, with a really solid
grip but most of all, their razor sharp tips and for how long they remain sharp.

HOLDING THE INSTRUMENT BENEFITS
GUIDELINES:
+
+
+
+
Barely hold the instrument using a
light, “exploratory scaling” touch.
Shave through calculus using a few light
strokes; do not fracture off calculus.
XP curettes and scalers are designed for scaling and root planing. Avoid using them on margins and overhangs.
Use less force, a lighter grip and a “shaving” or “exploratory” stroke.
Due to a thinner blade design, we do not recommend that you re-sharpen your XP instruments.
With proper use and maintenance, you can expect your XP instruments to last as long as your stainless steel instruments, without needing to re-sharpen.
+ A lighter touch aids in ergonomic hand protection and minimizes the risk of wrist/hand problems
+ A lighter touch increases instrument longevity
+ Less likely to burnish calculus with sharp blade
+ Saves time
+ Enhances patient comfort
+ Decreases scaling noise for auditory comfort
+ Less lateral pressure for scaling efficacy
There was a small learning curve to realize that your grip and use changes compared to the way
you use other instruments, but now that I have the hang of it, I canʼt imagine ever using anything else!!

Clinicians asked and AEI answered – the very popular supragingival access instrument is now thinner, reaching all areas of supragingival calculus like never before. The light stroke of the modifi ed scaling technique used with sharpen-free XP Technology makes it possible to design the Blackjack Pro Thin, as traditional lateral pressure could break an over-thinned working end. The Blackjack Pro Thin has the potential to replace all posterior and anterior sickle scalers, including the H6-7, streamlining preventive and periodontal treatment set ups.

M23 Pro Thin™ Scaler
The M23 Pro Thin allows for superior supra and interproximal adaptation and accessibility up to the contacts on all teeth. It also adapts to mesial and distal line angles of all teeth. Multi-surface adaptability saves time by allowing the operator to expedite scaling during a full mouth appointment. It’s versatility has the potential to replace all posterior and anterior sickle scalers, streamlining preventive and periodontal treatment set ups.

Barnhart 5-6 Pro Thin Curette
The universal curette is a staple in dental hygiene care, a design that has allowed clinicians to treat shallow pockets with subgingival calculus and gingivitis effectively and effi ciently. Pro Thin design kicks universal convenience up a notch, making adaptation easier in a wide range of shallow pockets. Curettes are typically too bulky to easily access anterior pockets without tissue damage, particularly at the line angles. The Barnhart 5-6 Pro Thin easily adapts in this area, accessing calculus that was beyond a curette’s reach with bulkier designs.

Gracey Access 1-2 Pro Thin™ Curette
The Gracey Access 1-2 Pro Thin curette is useful in pockets greater than 4mm in all anterior areas, as well as buccal and lingual molar furcations.
Gracey Access 7-8 Pro Thin Curette
The Gracey Access 7-8 Pro Thin curette is used in pockets greater than 4mm in anterior and pre-molar areas, as well as buccal and lingual molar furcations.
Gracey Access 13-14 Pro Thin Curette
The Gracey Access 13-14 Pro Thin curette is designed for use in distal surfaces and pockets greater than 4 mm in premolar and posterior areas. Extended shank improves access to all distal surfaces and pockets of the terminal molars.
Gracey Access 15-16 Pro Thin Curette
The Gracey Access 15-16 Pro Thin is a wonderful improvement on the 11-12. The 15-16 shank design improves angulation for better access in all posterior mesial, buccal, andlingual areas while easing hand position and reducing operator fatigue. Accessing posterior concavities and furcations is easy and effi cient with the 15-16 shank design.

Posterior Mesial
The 15–16 Gracey design was developed after practitioners began treating patients in a supine
position. With shank bends that are more similar to the 13–14 Gracey, mesial access is much
easier to achieve with the Gracey 15-16. It is truly the ideal instrument for complete coverage
of the buccal, lingual, and mesial surfaces of posterior pockets.

Designed for the hygienist who needs speed and perfection in those diffi cult anterior areas. e spoon is ideal for maxillary anterior
cingulums with very diffi cult stain and calculus. It easily removes lower anterior lingual layers of calculus without the worry of
snagging the thin lingual tissue. AEI’s patented sharpen-free XP® Technology maintains the factory shape throughout the life of the
instrument.
I personally love the N1 from American Eagle. On patients, the N1 quickly removes the stain and thin calculus in the deep maxillary anterior cingulums. In the lower anterior areas where there is fine calculus at the CEJ, I can gently push the tissue back and remove the deposits without worry of snagging the tissue. Add the XP Technology,
I don’t have to worry about sharpening. It is defi nitely my “go to” instrument!

Designed with the hygienist in mind, the Blackjack™ has a favorable blade design ideal for removing calculus and stains in all anterior
and interproximal areas, as well as access throughout the posterior. American Eagle Instruments added 4mm to the shank to increase
posterior access over other universal sickle scalers. In addition to stainless steel tips, the Blackjack is also manufactured with AEI’s
patented sharpen-free XP® Technology for a blade that maintains its factory edge throughout the life of the instrument. Blackjack is
available in EagleLite® resin or stainless steel handles. Plus, responding to repeated requests from dental hygienists throughout the
world, American Eagle makes the Blackjack in Quik-Tip™ cone sockets in both Talon Tough™
stainless steel and sharpen-free XP
Technology.

I developed these instruments to better serve my minimally
invasive capabilities. I found that most instruments were
too big to accommodate small laser preparations. These instruments are invaluable to those of us who practice
Minimally Invasive Dentistry.

DR. BLACK’S INSTRUMENT
NUMBERING FORMULADr. Black’s formula is based on the
concept of instrument balance. Balance
is established by keeping the blade of
the instrument within 2mm of the long
axis of the handle line. Proper balance is
necessary to achieve optimal cutting with
minimal eff ort.
Some instruments, such as margin
trimmers, are constructed with a cutting
edge at an angle other than a right angle.
In these cases, a fourth number is placed
in the formula that indicates the degree
of angle of the cutting edge to the long
axis of the handle.

Simply Sharp Eye Loupe
AE SA MEL
1. Using the 10x magnifi cation loupe, inspect cutting edges for defects.
2. Pick your method, sharpen your instrument, and test (using the test stick).
3. Inspect again by using the magnifi cation loupe for proper angle, edge contour, and sharpness
(a sharp edge will not refl ect light).4. Repeat steps 2 and 3. Make adjustments as
needed until the desired edge is achieved.5. Always check your instruments to maintain
sharpness. We recommend a new instrument be kept for comparison.
METHOD 1
METHOD 2
e edge is visible while the stone is moved at the correct angulation, producing a sharp edge.
is method creates less clinician fatigue. However, maintaining the correct angle on the lateral edge may be more diffi cult, due to the inability to physically see the edge while moving the instrument.

To maintain optimal cutting edges on your instruments, AEI recommends
routine sharpness testing by use of a test stick.
To test for sharpness, simply stroke the test stick as you would during use. If
the instrument “grabs” it is sharp; if it does not it should be resharpened or
discarded.
We do not recommend sharpening XP®
Technology instruments. Simply discard
and replace.
SIMPLY SHARP KIT AE SA CC/FK
Re-sharpening dental instruments can be inconvenient, tedious and challenging. However, it is
important to maintain sharp edges on your curettes and scalers. Our Simply Sharp Kit is designed
with your convenience in mind. e double-sided stone off ers you the choice of an extra-fi ne
surface on one side and coarse grit on the other. e kit also includes a powerful 10x loupe for
examining your edges. A sharpening test stick is included to conveniently test the cutting edge.

I have to tell you I am totally in love with these instruments!!! I
used the Double Gracey Posterior and the M23 Thin. Both instruments worked as if they were talking to each other!! If I could feel calculus but
couldn’t reach it with one instrument, I certainly picked it up with the
other. Both of these instruments are feather-
light; there was zero hand fatigue, AND
the patient said he felt no discomfort as I
worked. AND no tissue damage. I was in
Heaven!!! Thank you, American Eagle!!!
