CAMPBELL FOOTBALLBY THE NUMBERS

- 1 -Kurt Odom became Campbell’s first and only All-American to date in 2013, collecting Third Team honors from the Sports Network at full-back.

- 2 -The Campbell defense has finished in the top-20 in total defense in each of the last two seasons. After ranking fifth in total defense in 2015, the Camels stood 17th in 2016, allowing only 322.1 yards per game.

- 2 -Two Campbell Football alumni have signed with NFL teams since the program was brought back in 2008. Both signed in 2015 when defensive tackle Greg Milhouse joined the New York Gi-ants and long snapper Danny Dillon signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

- 5 -The Camels have posted five wins in each of the last three seasons, tied for the second most victories in a single season in the program’s nine years (record 6 in 2011). CU went 5-5 in 2016, notching the program’s second season at .500 or better.

- 10 -Campbell heads into its 10th season of football in 2017 (modern era). The Camels brought football back to the Creek in 2008 after a 58 year hiatus.

- 18 -Since 2013, Camels have been named All-PFL 18 times, including four last season. From 2008-12, Camels were named all-conference 14 times. Additionally, CU owns 43 honorable mention All-PFL nods since 2013.

- 68 -Former All-PFL running backs De’Shawn Jones and Jared Joyner combined for 68 percent of the Camels’ running game over the last two seasons. The duo ran for 2,739 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2015 and 2016 (4,042 team rush yards). CU will have to look elsewhere for that production in 2017.

- 1,038 -Aaron Blockmon hauled in 1,038 yards receiving in 2016, becoming Campbell’s first 1,000 yard receiver. The then redshirt sophomore dou-bled CU’s previous single season marks for yards (previous 497, Jabri Ridenhour, 2014) and touchdowns (previous 5, 3 times) with 10 scores. Heading into his third season, Blockmon is already Campbell’s all-time leader in receiving yards (1,491) and receiving touchdowns (15).

Current Big South Conference football membership includes core members Charleston Southern University (Charleston, S.C.), Gardner-Webb University (Boiling Springs, N.C.), Liberty University (Lynchburg, Va.) and Presbyterian College (Clinton, S.C.), plus associate football-only institutions Kennesaw State University (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Monmouth University (West Long Branch, N.J.). North Alabama (Florence, Ala.) will join the league as an associate member in 2019.

The Camels have made their home in the PFL since rebooting their football program in 2008 after a 58 year hiatus from the sport.

CAMELS PICKED FIFTH IN PFL PRESEASON POLLCampbell has been voted fifth in the 2017 Pioneer Football League Preseason Coaches’ Poll, an-nounced Monday by the conference.

The Camels, who were also picked fifth in the 2016 poll, tied with Jacksonville in a narrow vote. Campbell and JU (62 points), along with Marist (3rd, 69 points) and Drake (4th, 67 points) were separated by just seven points in the polling.

San Diego was predicted to win the league for the seventh consecutive year, picking up nine of the 11 available first place votes. The Toreros won the 2016 regular season title and advanced to the second round of the FCS Championship.

Dayton notched the two remaining first place votes. Butler (49), Morehead State (42), Stetson (29), Valparaiso (24) and Davidson (10) rounded out the poll.

BLOCKMON NAMED PRESEASON ALL-PFLA year after leading the conference in receiving yards, Campbell’s Aaron Blockmon has been named to the 2017 Preseason All-Pioneer Football League team.

The redshirt junior was named First Team All-PFL in 2016, becoming the Camels’ first 1,000 yard receiver with a league leading 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns, both Campbell records. Blockmon surpassed the 100 receiving yards mark six times on the season, hauling in a touchdown in each of his final five games.

The Sanford, N.C. native is already Campbell’s all-time leader in receiving yards (1,491) and receiv-ing touchdowns (15) after just two seasons on the field.

See the full 2017 Preseason All-PFL team at Pioneer-Football.org.

CU SETS ATTENDANCE RECORDS IN 2016It was a record breaking season at Barker-Lane Stadium, with Campbell setting multiple attendance records. The Camels averaged 5,523 fans per game, more than Barker-Lane Stadium’s 5,500 seat capacity, far surpassing its previous record high of 4,928, set in 2014. CU also set a total attendance mark with 33,138 fans through the gates, breaking the 2014 mark of 29,567.

Barker-Lane Stadium’s top two attendances in its nine year history came in 2016, including a record 6,673 on Oct. 22 against Stetson. 6,610 witnessed Campbell’s overtime win over Butler on Sept. 24

Campbell was one of four FCS programs to average a sellout in 2016, averaging 100.42 capacity percentage, joined by Mercer (110.17), Montana State (100.73) and Montana (100.63).

Campbell ranked second in the PFL in average attendance, just behind Morehead State’s 5,736 average and 34,415 total.

BLOCKMON RETURNS AS CU’S ALL-TIME LEADING RECEIVERAfter just two seasons on the field for the Camels, redshirt junior Aaron Blockmon is already Campbell’s all-time leading receiver. The Sanford, N.C. native became the Camels’ first 1,000 yard receiver in 2016 with a PFL leading 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns, taking home First Team All-PFL honors.

Last season, the then redshirt sophomore doubled CU’s previous single season marks for yards (previous 497, Jabri Ridenhour, 2014) and touchdowns (previous 5, 3 times) with 10 scores. Head-ing into his third season, Blockmon is already Campbell’s all-time leader in receiving yards (1,491) and receiving touchdowns (15).

RECENT DEFENSIVE SUCCESSCampbell’s defense has ranked in the top-20 in the nation in each of the last two seasons.

The Camels ranked fifth in the nation in total defense in 2015 (279.3 per game), standing third in team sacks per game (3.55) and ninth in scoring defense (17.7). The team shattered program re-cords for all three categories, adding single season marks for tackles for loss (85.0) and total sacks (38.0).

In 2016, Campbell stood 17th in the country in total defense, allowing only 322.1 yards per game. CU ranked 27th in rush defense (129.0) and 35th in passing yards allowed (193.1). For the fourth time in three years, a member of the CU defensive line was named First Team All-PFL (Syd Holt).Camels look to replenish backfield

Former Campbell standouts De’Shawn Jones and Jared Joyner completed their collegiate careers in 2016. The pair combined for 68 percent of the Camels’ running game over the last two seasons, running for 2,739 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2015 and 2016 (4,042 team rush yards) combined.

Jones led the conference in rushing, becoming Campbell’s first 1,000 back, and was named First Team All-PFL in 2015, adding 641 yards on the ground in 2016 before being sidelined due to injury. Joyner was named Second Team All-PFL in 2016, logging 741 yards and eight touchdowns.

CU will have to look elsewhere for that production in 2017, likely turning to a newcomer to shoulder the load in Rocky Reid, a Wake Forest transfer. Campbell’s top returning rushing threat is sopho-more Darius Barnes, who ran for 90 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries in three games before an injury cut his freshman season short. Redshirt sophomores Joshua Jones and Kahlil Dixon, as well as redshirt freshmen Sammie Cunningham and Montel Goods will also enter the mix.

DAVID MARSH NAMED OFFENSIVE COORDINATORDavid Marsh, a key member of the offensive coaching staffs at Texas A&M and UCLA for the past four seasons, has been named offensive coordinator. Marsh comes to Campbell after spending the 2016 season as an assistant at Texas A&M under head coach Kevin Sumlin and offensive coordina-tor Noel Mazzone.

The Aggies ranked second in the SEC in total yards (6,071) and third in points per game (34.9), while wide receiver Josh Reynolds led the SEC In receiving yards (1,039). Texas A&M went 8-5 overall, falling to Kansas State 33-28 in the Texas Bowl.

Prior to his time in College Station, Marsh was a member of Mazzone’s offensive staff at UCLA, coaching inside receivers with the Bruins from 2013-16, also coaching the offensive line in the spring of 2015. With Marsh’s help, UCLA ranked 23rd nationally in total offense in 2014 (467.8), also stand-ing 34th in rushing yards (209.5), paced by the PAC-12’s leading rusher, Paul Perkins.

From 2008-12, Marsh coached at the prep ranks, helping guide Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. to the 2011 Arizona State Championship. Marsh was a member of the United States Marine Corps from 2003-08.

MIKE MINTER

HEAD COACH • 5TH YEARNEBRASKA ‘97

Former Carolina Panthers standout and Nebraska Football Hall of Famer Mike Minter heads into his fifth season as head football coach at Campbell University in 2017.

In Minter’s fourth season at the helm in 2016, Campbell went 5-5 on the year, notching the pro-gram’s second season at .500 or better in its nine year history, and ranked third in the PFL in rushing offense, standing 19th nationally at 209 yards per game, as well as 17th in the country in total defense (322.1 yards per game). Wide receiver Aaron Blockmon also led the PFL in receiving yards (1,038) and touchdowns (10).

16 Camels were honored on the conference’s All-PFL teams following the 2015 season, with De’Shawn Jones (RB), Ugonna Awuruonye (DL ) and Greg Milhouse Jr. (DL) all receiving First Team All-PFL accolades. Jack Ryan was also named PFL Freshman Defensive Player of the Year.

The offseason saw another Campbell first, with defensive tackle Greg Milhouse Jr. (New York Gi-ants) and long snapper Danny Dillon (Arizona Cardinals) both signing NFL contracts.

2014 saw the Camels notch their second-most total and conference wins at 5-7 overall and 4-4 in PFL play. A school record seven Camels, plus eight honorable mentions, were named to the 2014 All-Pioneer Football League teams, including four first teamers. Eight CU student-athletes, with six first team members, were tabbed PFL All-Academic.

In Minter’s first season as head coach at CU, the Camels set 21 offensive team records, including rushing yards (2,800), passing yards (2,436), and total offense (5,236). The Camels also established four defensive marks, including sacks (27), and posted three team records on special teams.

Senior Kurt Odom became Campbell’s first football All-America selection, earning Third Team honors from the Sports Network. Odom was also named First Team All-PFL while seven Camels took home honorable mention nods. In May 2014, CU quarterback Brian Hudson signed a contract with the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders.

Minter picked up his first win as a collegiate head coach in his home debut as the Camels cruised to a 56-21 triumph over UVA-Wise.

Minter, a member of two national championship teams at Nebraska and the Panthers’ 2003 Super Bowl squad, joined the Fighting Camel program after serving as assistant coach at Liberty University in 2012 and Johnson C. Smith University in 2011. He also brought head coaching experience from First Assembly Christian School in Concord, where he guided his teams to 33 victories and two state titles in three seasons.

During his 10-year NFL career, Minter earned a starting safety role six games into his rookie year in 1997, and held that position until he retired after the 2006 season. A second-round draft choice, he helped lead the Panthers to three playoff trips, the 2003 NFC Championship and a berth in Super Bowl XXXVII.

In the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots, Minter suffered a broken left foot in the third quarter, but remained in the game and collected a career-high 18 tackles. At the time of his retire-ment, he held Panthers franchise records for starts (141), consecutive starts (94), fumble recoveries (11) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (4).

At Liberty, Minter worked as special teams coordinator/assistant defensive coach under head coach Turner Gill. He mentored three 2012 Big South all-conference performers in long snapper Richard Wright, place kicker John Lunsford and punter Grant Bowden. At Johnson C. Smith, Minter servedas as assistant head coach, defensive passing game coordinator and special teams coordinator, JCSU ranked fifth in the nation in punt return yardage in 2011.

Minter was a two-time national champion at Nebraska (1994 and 1995) where he played linebacker, free safety and strong safety for the Cornhuskers. He was a three-time all-conference performer and was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He graduated in 1997 with a Bache-lor of Science degree in engineering.
