The Xterra world tour gives athletes around the world

a chance to race in off-road triathlons and trail runs in

some of the most diverse, spectacular, and challenging

natural environments on the planet – from tropical

jungles to snow-covered alps. pro athletes compete for pro prize

monies, while amateurs race for national titles and coveted slots to

the world championship in maui, Hawaii.

at just 31-years-old Hugo is the youngest athlete ever

inducted to the Hall, but you’ll have to put that in

perspective by noting he was just a teenager when

he did his first Xterra back in 2004 at the inaugural

Xterra south africa championship.

He finished 3rd that day and over the next 11 years finished

in the top 5 over 70 times. among those podium positions was

an agonising 22 runner-up finishes, certainly more than he’d

like to talk about, but he also won his fair share with 15 major

championship wins.

and talk about leaving on a high note, in his last two years –

2013 and 2014 – he did two dozen Xterra races on six conti-

nents and during that stretch won races in eight countries including

the prestigious Xterra asia-pacific championship in australia.

while his racing credentials alone were good enough to get him

into the Hall, it’s Hugo’s contributions to the sport as an ambas-

sador for the Xterra lifestyle that made him stand out from the

crowd.

XteRRa-oRDinaRy liFestyleHugo was a spokesman for a way of life, the Xterra way of life,

and at every stop he’d share the gospel of Xterra and perpetuat-

ed his guiding principle that health is wealth.

He also has a true gift for words, both written and spoken, and

can tell the most colourful of stories.

He once said his favourite aspect of Xterra was “the places.

“and by that,” he explained, “i mean more than the cities and zip

codes. it’s the rare views, the canopies of forest, the berms in those

forests and all the little details that make me feel like a rich man.”

Hugo made Xterra look good. He has been referred to as the

sport’s “pin-up” and justifiably so. He was Triathlete Magazine’s

favorite photo feature subject – for covers, swimsuit editions, you

name it.

there’s a lot more to Hugo than good looks though. He is a true

entrepreneur. a renaissance man equally interested in business

and brands, good flavours and good wine. He immersed himself in

many things; the art of coffee, social dining, film, wine, ice cream,

writing, photography, and travel.

He did his first triathlon at the age of 9 and said he had been swim-

ming, biking, and running away from the real world ever since. that

was, of course, until he retired from the sport at the tender age of 29.

Upon his retirement Hugo said that “celebrating numerous highs

and grovelling through countless setbacks was a tremendous way

to spend his twenties.”

and while he often talked about being a master of procrastina-

tion, when it came to seizing the opportunity to embrace his dream

job in global marketing, he did not hesitate.

His place in Xterra history and lore is secure. His future is

beyond bright. For his contributions to Xterra as an athlete,

a friend, and an ambassador, we welcome Dan Hugo to a very

distinguished club – the Xterra Hall of Fame.

weiss squad

Bradley weiss has come a long way since his first triathlon

as a wide-eyed 19-year-old when, like most newcomers to

the sport, he arrived at the start with the bare minimum of

gear and an old aluminium bike. But it was enough for the

bug to bite and he’s since gone on to become a star performer on the

local triathlon scene and something of an Xterra guru. He’s turned a

passion into a career and earlier this month he was in maui with hopes

of becoming the first south african winner of the Xterra world

championship since conrad stoltz’s final victory in 2010.

it wasn’t to be, however, as the weather and conditions combined to

create a course that did not best suit his skills.

“i had a great start to the swim, managing to avoid getting caught

up in any of the big swells smashing onto the shore,” he told enduro-

Hub. “exiting the water i was about two minutes down on the leaders.

i struggled on the bike, the wet and muddy conditions resulted in me

struggling to find traction.”

according to weiss, the mud in maui is unique. “(it’s) almost like clay

which just builds up on the tires and gets caught up in all the working

parts of a bicycle, especially after hitting the deck a few times. onto the

run i just found a steady rhythm and tried to get an accurate indication of

my position. i was in 13th place and ultimately that is where i would stay

despite passing a few athletes only to be caught by others. i crossed the

line in one piece which i am grateful for, but the taste of disappointment

and frustration was still raw and almost too real to come to terms with.”

this year weiss returned to maui after skipping the event in 2015.

He participated in 2014, finishing 10th overall (two places behind

conrad stoltz in his last world champs), but felt his 2015 form didn’t

warrant the trip to the United states.

“last year i did a lot of competing in europe and south africa, which

entailed a lot of travel. so by the time the world champs came around

i just didn’t think i had enough in me for the travel and the level of com-

petition. it’s a tough place to get to from sa and a tough race environ-

ment; for us, we have to get there a week before the race to acclimatise,

there are jet lag issues and the climate is so different to anything i had

done in the year. i probably wouldn’t have been that competitive.”

this year was slightly different, with weiss sculpting his schedule to

include an assault on the world champs. He’s also been in fine form,

winning all three south african Fedhealth Xterra events and finishing

second overall on the asia pacific Xterra tour. He’s had good results

in europe too.

“it was a big result to win the sa champs in Grabouw,” says weiss.

“as a south african, that’s the one you want to win, so your name

can sit alongside the likes of conrad stoltz and Dan Hugo. i was really

pleased with that result and of course to win in Buffelspoort and Nelson

mandela Bay, which made me the overall series champion, was great.”

the south african Xterra champion is now back in south africa and

will almost certainly have his sights set on retaining all three local titles.

rising star

with a string of impressive results at Fedhealth

Xterra lite events over the last few years, much

is expected of the rising star when he enters the

Xterra Full arena next year. Here, he talks to us

about his career and his future ambitions.

I was originally a mountain biker when I first started my

sporting career.

i was later persuaded into doing a triathlon by my close friend

ruan Van Zyl, a fellow Xterra athlete, and fell in love with the

sport instantly. when i heard about the series and how it was off-

road i was extremely excited about it and did everything possible

to get on the start line of the next Xterra event.

I have placed second at the Buffelspoort Lite event for

three years in a row.

i’ve been second at Grabouw in 2015, first at the pe event and

i was the first south african junior to cross the line at this year’s

Xterra lite in Grabouw. with Xterra being a qualifying event

for the cross triathlon world championship it has sent me to

Germany in 2014 and italy 2015 where i competed shoulder to

shoulder with some of the world’s greatest athletes. i placed 6th

and 2nd respectively.

My strengths would definitely be the off-road aspect of

the race.

i really enjoy mountain biking and trail running and i feel that my

off-road racing is faster than my on-road racing. i started mountain

biking at an early age so i always had a love for the technical side

of cycling which translated into my Xterra racing.

The competition never rests so you always have to be on

top of your game.

the training is gruelling and very physically and mentally drain-

ing, but if you have the right mindset anything and everything is

possible.

This year was my last year competing in the Lite event.

i will be moving up into the full in 2017. mentally i feel prepared

but physically i am more tuned for the shorter racing at the

moment. i will however be doing a lot of base training after my

world champs event this year in preparation for the first event.

i am definitely looking forward to racing the Full next year and

trying my hand against the top pro athletes.

There’s no real holiday from training.

For the past couple of years, i’ve trained all through the year to

ensure i was strong for events at the end of the year and events at

the beginning of the next one. the jump in distance may be a little

tough at the beginning but i feel confident enough that i’ll be able

to manage.

Being my first year of Full I want to achieve at least a top

10 in every event.

it’s a big goal to have, especially in Xterra, but it is something i will

be working towards and something i am very excited about.michael Ferreira in action at Buffelspoort last year.

the reception he received was goose-bump worthy – a well-

deserved standing ovation from an adoring crowd. His acceptance

speech was equally memorable.

“Xterra has been an integral part of my life,” said stoltz,

holding back tears. “we always talk about Xterra being family,

and it is. it really is. what tom and Dave and Julie created is simply

amazing, and i’m beyond grateful.”

stoltz collected an unprecedented 53 career championship wins
