2017 Annual Report

Our Mission includes helping families and individuals attain affordable, long-term homeownership in the near-west side of Indianapolis by providing education, mentoring, and quality rehabilitated homes.

Our Mission is driven by our Catholic Faith and our vision to make a difference and transform the area around the Saint Anthony neighborhood into a vibrant community, remaining mindful of being good stewards to God’s many blessings.

Dear Friends of Hearts & Hands,

Hearts & Hands was started on faith by Father John McCaslin and our founding members to create sustainability and permanency in the near-west side neighborhoods of Haughville and Hawthorne. Hearts & Hands’ work focuses on purchasing and fully-rehabilitating vacant houses, partnering with INHP (Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership), and working with low income families and individuals to become successful homeowners.

In this era of downtown residential renaissance, the near-west side of Indianapolis is an island of great need. When Hearts & Hands was founded, our inspiration was one house, one family at a time. Since our inception we have provided eleven families with newly rehabilitated homes to call their own. Now, we must pick up the pace. We see, feel, and live the urgency every day. Our vision is good and noble but we need your support to sustain the neighborhood. More homes need to be purchased, rehabbed, and sold; or the neighborhood will quickly see more displacement.

A real estate project currently under development producing $250,000 homes will most assuredly alter the makeup of the neighborhood by forcing current residents out of their homes.

To help more families and expand our impact, we need your support. We are grateful that you give big, volunteer often, and advocate loudly. Your bold partnership builds more homes and transforms more lives.

Please think about your impact on the near-west community as we work together to make a difference on behalf of Hearts & Hands families. Thank you!

God Bless,

Father Juan José Valdéz Tom Egold Suzanne ThompsonChairman of the Board President Executive Director

In the fall of 2017, we announced a new membership for our donors, The Rooftop Society, as a way to highlight our major donors. Members of The Rooftop Society are recognized in the annual report, on our website, and are invited to three special events throughout the year.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to our current Rootop Society Members:

Our volunteers are the best! You come to us from businesses, faith communities, and so many other places. This year, more people than ever before contributed their time and talent.

Our volunteers enhance our neighborhood with a focus on beautifying, rehabilitating, and providing administrative support. In 2017, we had approximately 170 individual volunteers, many of whom came from our volunteer groups. We couldn’t do this good work without you!

Thank you so much to each of our volunteers, especially these groups!
