Friends,

I want you to know first and foremost that Goshen Valley continues to grow stronger and more effective. As a ministry that now cares for over 90 foster youth and children within three separate programs, we realize the importance of each of you and the support you have offered our youth. I am significantly humbled to be given the opportunity to lead our efforts at Goshen Valley and to share with you the successes of this past year.

We realize that the children we serve all have something in common beyond being in foster care, and this is trauma. Trauma occurs when a child is exposed to an unhealthy environment and various degrees of abuse and or neglect. In 2017, Goshen Valley made it a priority for our staff to be trauma-informed. We have always known about the challenges our youth have faced, but now we are better equipped to recognize and respond. Goshen’s utilization of Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) has created a common language for care within our programs.

As a donor or partner, it is important for you to know that as we scale our efforts in an attempt to reach as many foster children as possible, we do so around best practice. At the core of our mission, prioritizing safety and sustainability allows us to then pursue peace and purpose in the lives of our young people.

In the year ahead, Goshen Valley is positioned to meet the needs of our growing population of foster children while also better serving their biological families and our local community. We realize that our work has just begun, and we will continue building off the base of support you have provided over the past two decades. We are grateful for the platform you have helped us establish, and we are hopeful that you will continue walking with us as we move forward.

Our mission is to create relational

environments that evoke peace and purpose in self

and others.With Peace and Purpose,

Zach J. Zachary Blend, MBA Chief Executive OfficerGoshen Valley Foundation.

Goshen Valley Boys Ranch

2017 held some exciting progress for the Goshen Valley Boys Ranch. After a 2016 focused on growth, 2017 was a year to push the bar further towards excellence.

Goshen was able to reach youth who might have been too challenging previously, and no one epitomizes this more than Bryan. Bryan’s two brothers were at Goshen, and our team wanted to bring the family back together. However, Bryan had been addicted to methamphetamine and was in a treatment program. After several months, Bryan’s therapist felt he was ready to come and live at Goshen.

Although this seemed like a risk initially, it quickly became an obvious right choice. Bryan had a baby and was motivated to be a good father. Bryan began substance abuse counseling, enrolled in GED classes, and began working. He sent most of the money he made to his girlfriend Anna in order to care for his son. These two began to come for visits

and slowly Bryan became more and more of a real father to Lucas. “Goshen has helped me come closer to being a better dad with all the great influences around me,” Bryan stated. “Before I came to Goshen I didn’t have the positivity that made me the person I am today. I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am today without the help I got from Goshen.” When Bryan turned 18, our team created the option for his little family to become part of Goshen New Beginnings and stay in our program. Today, he is learning how to be a father as he and Anna raise Lucas and break the cycle. From the substance abuse program where Bryan started, to Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, to Goshen New Beginnings, everyone worked together in search of what was best for a great young man and his family.

We believe every young man deserves to know the safety of a home, the love of a

family, and the hope of a future.

Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, located in the Salacoa Valley of Waleska, Georgia, is home to 46 young men in foster care age 8-18. All boys participate in

therapeutic counseling, public school education, and our comprehensive recreation program, all while living in a unique, family-based home.

Goshen New Beginnings

Last year, GNB had a renewed focus on vocational needs and long-term employment opportunities for our youth. Through this focus we developed a Vocational Program centered on equipping youth with the skills necessary for stable employment. Our community partners were incredibly valuable in this process, coming to our aid in trainings and employment opportunities. We have had local business partners lead trainings for our youth on resume building, interviewing, personal finance, and many other relevant employment topics.

The success in employment has led to great achievement in personal finance for our youth. In 2017, over $30,000 went in to their long-term savings accounts. This is a substantial improvement from previous years, and it is a strong sign of growth and accomplishment as our youth begin to think more about their futures.

We ended 2017 with youth employed at local manufacturing businesses, an auto mechanic shop, a supermarket, a landscaping company, multiple department stores, and several local restaurants. The community and business partners involved have made a great impact in shaping the future for youth aging out of foster care and into adulthood.

Goshen New Beginnings works to extend the runway for foster youth age 18-21. Few youth are ready for independence at age 18, and GNB helps prepare and

transition these foster youth as they age into adulthood.

Goshen Homes

Unfortunately, children who enter foster care often lose more than their parents; they may also be deprived of their lifelong sibling relationships. When children are removed from their home, keeping the sibling unit together provides some degree of normalcy in a time of great crisis, trauma, and stress. For children entering care, being with their siblings can enhance their sense of safety and well-being while providing natural, mutual support. Siblings have a shared history, and maintaining their bond provides continuity of identity and belonging.

Goshen Homes desires to keep sibling groups together and reunite previously separated siblings, while also serving sibling groups that have significant clinical needs. Sibling groups where one child may have moderate to severe clinical needs are considered difficult to place. Goshen Homes is built for this type of sibling group, providing placement, stability, and trauma sensitive services within a family setting. Goshen Homes’ trauma informed therapeutic foster care model equips our foster parents to meet the needs of those

sibling groups who have more intensive clinical needs.

One of our most encouraging stories from 2017 was from the Smith family. The Smith family was recently licensed by Goshen Homes to be a foster family. Two children were placed in their home and they immediately bonded. The Smiths have 4 children of their own and 3 now live out of the house. Their youngest son took on a new responsibility of “big brother” and grew to love their new foster children. Shortly after placement, the Smiths were told that a home had opened that was able to take their current 2 children and reunite them with their 2 sisters in another county so all 4 children could live together. The Smiths’ foster children would be leaving their home. The family jumped into action. Not wanting to lose their 2 foster children, the Smiths rearranged their home, and their lives, to make room for the 2 sisters to move into their own home. A few months later, instead of losing their 2 foster children, they gained 2 more and now care for a sibling set of 4.

“We are so thankful for families who literally rearrange their entire lives to make room for

children who are in need. The Smiths could have taken the easy way, but instead chose

to respond to a great need. Today, their four foster children are thriving.”

ARLEEN WALLACE

Goshen Homes is the specialized foster home division of Goshen Valley. Goshen Homes’ aim is to provide loving family environments to children in foster care

while keeping siblings together and in their home community.
