Letter from Board President and Executive Director

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity,

It is with great pleasure that we present the 2017 Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity Annual Report. With deep gratitude to

God’s providence, along with the support of many donors, volunteers, partner families and staff, we are able to share a

number of accomplishments with you, including:

• Bringing to 141 the number of families that the Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity has served since its founding in 1983.

• Celebrating with the 38 partner families who have paid off their no-interest Habitat mortgages.

• Conducting a highly successful, inaugural Building Futures annual fund campaign which was chaired by John Tatum of

Hunter Maclean and which raised $305,512.

• Building our ReStore operations at our new location at 701 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with the ReStore providing

$108,000 in net revenue to further our homeownership program.

• Supporting the Edgemere/Sackville neighborhood association as they create a comprehensive housing plan for their

neighborhood in Savannah.

• Facilitating the demolition of 2 blighted structures in Savannah as the first step in developing these properties as affordable

homeownership units while simultaneously increasing neighborhood safety and surrounding property values.

• Strengthening our long-standing partnership with the City of Savannah’s Housing Department while developing new

partnerships with the Garden City Government and Chatham County.

• Growing our Board of Directors to 14 active members, transitioning back to being a governing board, and re-invigorating our

committees through an energetic Board retreat in January 2017.

We cannot rest on our laurels. Our county continues to experience a growing affordable housing crisis as the demand for

housing outstrips supply. This has resulted in many working families, including many of those on our waiting list, being unable

to afford a decent place to rent. We are already hard at work preparing for 2018. Some of our current projects include:

• Having 5 construction projects at various stages in our construction pipeline.

• Planning for our 2018 Building Futures annual fund campaign.

• Adding the Financial Peace University financial literacy program and estate planning to our existing homeowner education

program.

• Launching our Building Family Futures Women Club initiative, giving local women the opportunity to fund the construction of

a Habitat house in 2018.

• Moving forward with the consolidation of all of our operations at 701 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard so that we can serve

more families in a more efficient manner.

Thank you for your support in 2017. We look forward to your continued support in 2018 as we collectively work towards a

world where no child of God awakens in sub-standard housing.

In a Spirit of Partnership,

Harold Tessendorf,

Executive Director

Leonard Jones,

Board President

Special EventsWorld Habitat Day 2017

Every October, housing organizations around the world hold events to recognize the importance of safe, decent and affordable shelter. On October 6th 2017, CEHFH hosted its 2nd Annual World Habitat Day event to raise awareness of the growing need for affordable housing in both Chatham County and around the world. It also celebrated with four partner families who paid off their no-interest mortgages during 2017.

Launch of Building Family Futures Women Club (BFF Club)

This new venture for Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity was launched on October 25th with support from Hunter Maclean Attorneys at Law, Savor

Savannah and the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. The club brings together women from across the community to raise the funds to

build an entire Habitat home in Chatham Co in 2018.

Special Events 2018 Home Builders Blitz

After a decade-long hiatus and as part of the National Home Builder

Blitz Program, CEHFH re-engaged with the Home Builders Association of Greater Savannah and its members to accelerate the construction of

three new homes on Dancy Street in the Tatemville neighborhood of Savannah. Beacon New Homes, Homes of Integrity and Matthew Johns

Construction took the lead on mobilizing fellow builders and sub- contractors to construct these houses between May and August 2017.

3rd Annual Hops for Habitat

Thanks to the generous support of Carson Construction

Company, CEHFH held its 3rd Annual Hops for Habitat

fundraiser on August 19th in collaboration with Service

Brewing Company and Big Bon Pizza. The event was

attended by 150 people and netted over $10,000 to fund

our work in 2017.
