United States Presidents’ messages to ACF
September 2015
“I send warm greetings to all those attending the 50th Anniversary Dinner for the Appeal of Conscience Foundation and to its founder, Rabbi Arthur Schneier. In too many corners of the globe, people are still persecuted for their beliefs,
imprisoned for their ideals, and punished for their convictions. By striving to shape a future in which the rights and dignity of every person are protected, organizations like yours play a vital role in bringing us closer to a more just and equal world.”

As a young child living under Nazi occupation in Vienna and Hungary during World War II, Rabbi Arthur Schneier saw the atrocities that mankind was capable of committing. He vowed that if he survived he would change the world into one of tolerance, where people of all faiths could co-exist and adopt the principle of “live and let live”. In 1965 he founded the Appeal of Conscience Foundation and became internationally known for his leadership on behalf of religious freedom, human rights and tolerance.
Rabbi Arthur Schneier was awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Clinton, for “his service as an international envoy for four administrations” and as a Holocaust survivor for “devoting a lifetime to overcoming forces of hatred and intolerance.” In 2015 Pope Francis bestowed upon him the Knighthood of St. Sylvester. Rabbi Arthur Schneier is the recipient of the Legion d’honneur and other high awards from many nations.
He has served as Senior Rabbi of Park East Synagogue since 1962, he was privileged to host Pope Benedict XVI in 2008, the first ever Papal visit to a synagogue in the United States, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I and the Patriarch of Moscow, Aleksey II.
Rabbi Arthur Schneier served as U.S. Alternate Representative to the United Nations and is Ambassador of the UN Alliance of Civilizations. His alma mater, Yeshiva University, established the Rabbi Arthur Schneier Program for International Affairs. He is the recipient of eleven honorary doctorates from U.S. and European universities.
He is married to Elisabeth Nordmann Schneier.
