CommerceSound financial literacy skills paid off for Meriden’s Year 9 Commerce students when they registered the highest average class score across Australia in the Suncorp ESSI Money Challenge, New Teacher category. The Challenge took the form of an online financial literacy simulation game where the girls made employment, investment, spending and savings decisions in order to increase their income.

Da Vinci DecathlonThe Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of students. Meriden’s Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 teams placed in the top 10 overall in this year’s competition. The Year 10 team placed second overall, gaining top three placings in three subject areas and the Year 9 team placed third overall, gaining top ten placings in six areas.

In the Grand Final of the Year 10 Division, Meriden’s team of Tilda Stafford, Emily Liao, Ananya Deshpande, Lily Yang and Victoria Workman was named the runner up following a very close debate which resulted in a split decision from the judging panel. Meriden placed fifth overall in the 2017 competition.

EnglishRebecca Starling, Year 7, and Tilda Stafford, Year 10, attained the top score in New South Wales in their respective year levels in the ICAS English assessment. This remarkable achievement earned the students the University of NSW Medal.

Paris Koic was awarded the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge Medal for her commitment in taking up the Challenge every year from Year 3 to Year 9.

HospitalityAfter placing first in the regional and state ACF Inter Schools Culinary Competition, Hannah Powell and Jasmine Ng went on to claim the silver medal in the national competition held in Brisbane. They also received the teamwork award in the national competition.

LanguagesEach year Languages students take part in the ACER Assessment of Language Competence test which draws on students’ sociocultural knowledge, cognitive skills and their knowledge of the structure and purpose of language.

To achieve a High Distinction in both the reading and listening sections of the test is the hallmark of an outstanding student. The following students achieved this honour in 2017: Metilda You for Chinese Additional Certficate 2; Vivian Chen for Chinese Additional Certificate 3; and Tilda Stafford and Aileen Wang for French Certificate 3. Public SpeakingThe strength of our students’ ability to engage in rigorous intellectual discussion about ideas and world views was highlighted when Aileen Wang, Bianca Bader and Gabrielle Katanasho placed second in the Religious and Ethical Questions section at the AHIGS Festival of Speech. This section is acknowledged as one of the most challenging categories of the annual Festival.

The Plain English Speaking Award encourages the use of clear and effective spoken English. At each stage of the competition, participants are required to present both prepared and impromptu speeches. Aileen Wang’s skilful development of theme, engaging style and effective use of plain English earned her a place in the Regional Finals.

The Youth Forum is an annual event which enables motivated and talented students to identify, research and present an issue of importance to today’s youth. The winners of the 2017 Youth Forum were Emily Liao, Ananya Deshpande, Penelope Dawson and Tilda Stafford.

Robust discussions on philosophical and ethical issues gained the Meriden team of Freja Newman, Ananya Deshpande and Margot McKeown third place in the NSW Philosothon. On an individual level, Freja placed first in the Year 9 division and Margot placed third in the Year 11 division.

ScienceHelena Yan attained the top score in New South Wales in the Year 9 ICAS Science assessment. This remarkable achievement earned her the University of NSW Medal.

Esther Wong and Alicia Lieng have been selected to participate in the Science Olympiads Summer School after placing in the top ten percent in the Australian Physics Olympiad. In the Australian Chemistry Olympiad, Esther and Alicia attained a Distinction together with Georgina Vimalaratnam and Jessica Wei. Ursula Hogan was awarded a Distinction in the Australian Physics Olympiad.

Esther Wong is one of only 140 science students selected from countries across the world to attend the Professor Harry Messel International Science School at Sydney University in 2018. Esther will meet and learn from inspiring scientists about cutting-edge research, and experience university life in the research and teaching laboratories of the University of Sydney.

Helen Zhang won selection and attended the 2017 BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Camp.

Madeleine Whip was selected as a finalist in the BHP Billiton Science and Engineering Awards. Madeleine will travel to Melbourne in 2018 to compete for selection to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in the USA.

Three Meriden students were presented with awards in the Rotary Club of Strathfield Awards presentation. Claire Zhao received the major award for her involvement in school science and her achievements in the Australian Physics and Chemistry

Olympiads. Kate Carey and Lily Yang received the minor award for their outstanding student research projects which have been recognised on a school, state and international level.

Creativity in Science and Technology (CREST) is a non-competitive, nationally accredited award program, supporting students to design and carry out their own open-ended science investigation or technology project. The most complex of the CREST awards is the Gold Award. A student must undertake at least 100 hours work on her project.
