We have a leadership team (ILT) on campus consisting of grade level representative, specials representatives, and administration. Meetings take place bi-weekly. The purpose of this team is to evaluate instructional programs and provide teacher input on instructional practices. Additionally, we have anOperational Leadership Team (OLT). Each respective team is made up of grade level and specials representative as well as campus administration. Meetings take place monthly. The OLT primarily functions as a safety and security team.

We meet as a campus group weekly in a variety of contexts from whole group, vertical and horizontal teams, etc. Grade levels meet in PLCS on Tuesdays, often with administration to evaluate student and teacher work and develop a plan for student learning. RtI, 504, and ARD committees meet to discuss theneeds and progress of students. We have a regular schedule for RTI meetings in order to provide a consisitent opportunities to engage in collaborative workfor students receving tiered interventions. These meetings occur on Fridays each week.

Due to personal events we have had a high turnover of teachers this year. We had 2 teachers retire, 2 get promoted into new roles, 2 teachers get married andmove away, and 2 teachers who took a job closer to home. In addition, we had 2 teachers transfer within the district. However, our staff survey and OHIresults are positive and show that teachers have a sense of pride and satisfaction working at Beck Elementary.

Perceptions

Perceptions Summary

Creating a strong community at Beck has been a priority since my arrival as principal 4 years ago. With that in mind, we set out on a journey. In the spring of2015, we decided to actively build a climate which fosters academic and interpersonal excellence among our students, staff and community. In the spring of2015, we gathered input from our families and staff. After considering the feedback, our team leaders developed a list of essential character traits—the keyqualities necessary to succeed in the classroom, in the community, and in the world. We drafted our “True Blue Bulldog” code of ethics, promoting eightcore values: curiosity, self-directness, reflection, creativity, connectedness, self-awareness, inquisitiveness, and mindfulness. Additionally, for each value, weworked together to create a series of helpful “I-statements” to illuminate performance outcomes. We added key quotes from notable contributors to society toinspire and expand our understanding of each value. Lastly, we added a list of instructional strategies for each value, to help teachers model and promotethese traits in the classroom. We launched an all-out campaign to embed these values in everything we do. Tying these values to academics and instruction,we participated in student and staffbook studies, posted anchor charts, painted our walls with words, published newsletters, implemented mini-lessons,facilitated service projects, set norms and reinforced best practices for each trait. Our classrooms are full of students who have internalized these values, andwho are articulating their understanding and putting our “I-statements” into practice. Our students quickly claimed the language of our value system as theirown, and then began applying the principals in academic and interpersonal situations. Suddenly, a challenging group work activity became more than amoment to complain and argue with peers. It became an opportunity to say, “I’m not afraid to try and fail; the more I experiment, the more I learn.”

At Beck, we believe that the teacher matters, and that the enviornment influences learning. Therefore, our practices reflect our beliefs and help to create aculture of high expectations fostered by a positive school climate.
