A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF HOWARD WILBUR DAVIS AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Howard Wilbur Davis on Sunday, June 10, 2018; and

Whereas, a native of Walterboro, Howard Wilbur Davis was born on April 23, 1949 to parents John and Josephine Davis. He attended Colleton County High School and Palmer College and served in the United States Navy, both on active duty and in the reserves; and

Whereas, from 1973 to the mid 1990s, Howard served the Charleston Naval Shipyard in a number of roles, including as maintenance foreman. He also served in this position at the Beaufort Naval Hospital; and

Whereas, a leader in his community, Howard was a member of the Walterboro Shrine Club Arabian Temple #139 and served as worthy patron for the Pride of Walterboro #189 O.E.S. He was also a member of and past master for the Sunlight Lodge #221 and a member of the Building Committee for the Lodge; and

Whereas, a man of faith, Howard accepted Christ at an early age, and he loved reading and studying the Bible and hearing the word of the Lord. He was a devoted member of St. John Baptist Church in Walterboro, where he touched the lives of many as deacon and Sunday school superintendent; and

Whereas, in 1972, Howard married Gladys Manigo. Together, they had five children: Christie, Howard “Boobie” II, Amanda, Brent, and Brittany; and

Whereas, in his free time, Howard loved farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family; and

Whereas, Howard was preceded in death by his son, Brent; his brother, Herman; and his sister, Connie Mae; and

Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Gladys; children, Christie, Howard II (Tiffany), Amanda, and Brittany; grandchildren, Ashley, Deja, Jasmine, Jada, and Ethan; siblings, Leola Strong, Virginia (Matthew) Bright, Louvenia (Willie) Francis, Jeanette (Harry) Brown, Curly Mae (Raymond) Teasdell, Sandra (Larry) Chestnut, Woodrow (Annette) Davis, and Sylvia Ford; three living aunts, Flora Bell Stephens, Jessierine Bright, and Florrie Ford; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in-law, and very special friends. He will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Howard Wilbur Davis and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Howard Wilbur Davis.
