INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Matt Bollant joins EIU as the ninth head coach in program history following a five year stint as head coach at Illinois. In his first season with the Illini, Bollant led them to the post season for the first time in three years finishing with a winning Big Ten record for the first time in ten seasons. Before his time at Illinois, he was head coach at Green Bay. He guided the Phoenix to five straight Horizon League titles and had four straight trips to the NCAA tournament. While at Green Bay his record was 148-19 overall and 85-5 in the HL. He was named Horizon League Coach of the Year four times. Bollant started his head coaching career at Bryan College in 2002. He led the Lady Lions to four straight NAIA tournaments. Bollant holds a 343-149 overall record as he takes over the Panthers who are coming off a 9-19 losing season.

The Panthers traveled to Wright State for their previous game falling 81-46 to the Raiders. Carmen Tellez led EIU with nine points from behind the arc while Grace Lennox had eight points, four rebounds, and three assists. Jennifer Nehls had a team high seven rebounds. Jalisha Smith came off the bench with six points and six rebounds. The Radiers had four players score in double digits. Wtight State had a dominating presence in the paint outscoring the Panthers 46-20. EIU had 21 turnovers throughout the game, which led to 23 Wright State points. The Panthers were also out-rebounded by 20 as they still look to fill their rebounding void from last season.

Evansville heads into Saturday’s game coming off a 14 point loss to Alabama A&M. Brooke Dossett shot 5-of-8 from the field with 14 points. Kerri Gasper shot 50 percent from the field with 12 points. Kaylan Coffman grabbed 9 rebounds in their 70-56 loss. The Purple Aces opened the season with a 89-81 win over Murray State. Evansville was powered by a 33 point performance from Hannah Noe. Gasper, Dossett, and Kelsi Scott also scored in double digits for the Purple Aces. Scott finished with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Evansville shot 48 percent from the field in their season opening victory.

The Panthers lead the series history 10-5 as the teams prepare for their 16th meeting. EIU defeated the Purple Aces 73-63 early last season. Lennox led the Panthers with 22 points and four assists. Smith added 10 points and seven rebounds while Stull had 12 points and seven rebounds.

• Rebounds remain to be an area the Panthers need to work on. Through the first two games of the season EIU has been out-rebounded 103-67. They are allowing their opponents to average 51.5 rebounds per game to their 33.5. The bulk of the opponents rebounds come on the defensive end, but EIU’s opponents have collected ten more offensive rebounds than the Panthers. EIU needs to remain disciplined on defense and box out the offensive players to bring that margin down.

• In exhibition, the Panthers shot 44.4 percent from behind the arc, but they have struggled to keep that going through the start of the season. EIU connnected on only 9-of-21 three-pointers in their season opener vs. Northern Illinois and 5-of-25 at Wright State. They are shooting 23 percent from the three point range through these first two games.

• Because of their heavy three-point shooting, the Panthers have struggled in the paint against their opponents. NIU outscored them 37-25 opening night and Wright State dominated the pait by 26 points. EIU should look for more opportunities inside, which will also allow them more opportunities for offensive rebounds and second chance points.

• The Panthers opened the 2017-18 season with a 93-64 loss to Northern Illinois. Lennox led EIU with 17 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. Grace McRae made her first career start tallying eight points and grabbing five rebounds. Halle Stull had 11 third-quarter points and shot 3-6 from behind the arc that quarter. The Panthers shot 34 percent from the field for the game.

• Jalish Smith returns for the Panthers following a season ending injury last year. Smith averaged 10.3 points and 6.9 rebounds in nine games. Smith recorded back-to-back double-doubles against Florida A&M and Illinois Springfield. At Florida A&M, Smith set career highs scoring 19 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. At Illinois-Springfield, she poured in 15 points and tallied 12 rebounds.

• The seven returning players are joined this season by seven freshman. Three players joing the 2017-18 squad from overseas. Grace McRae and Lana Marov both come to EIU from Australia, while Camino Tellez joins us from Madrid, Spain. Taylor Steele, Karle Pace, Katrina Christian, and Vuyelwa Magalela come from across the States.
