BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD 2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT

On behalf of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s dedicated Board members and staff, it is our pleasure to share our 2017-2018 Annual Report . As you thumb through these pages, we hope you get a better feel for our mission as well as our legacy of service .

What gives us a tremendous sense of pride is the fact that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad has become a vital part of our community’s social safety net . We are proud that more than 90,000 youngsters have walked through our doors over the past 66 years . We are proud of the huge impact that the Club has had on so many young lives . We are proud that no child or family is turned away due to inability to pay .

Our buildings may look like bricks and mortar from the outside, but inside our walls lives are changed on a daily basis . Our Clubhouses are filled with stories of success, and it is humbling to witness the impact Club membership has had on so many youngsters . The fact that we’ve received Charity Navigator’s highest rating—4 stars—gives our supporters the confidence to know that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently and responsibly .

Did you know that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is nearly 100% funded by private and local donors? We are extremely grateful to our donors and volunteers; they are true investors in our mission and are responsible for turning our vision into reality .

A number of noteworthy events occurred over the past year, but perhaps the one we are most proud of is the fact that we gave a more than $500,000 in financial assistance (despite our extremely low fees) . We’ve also stepped up to the challenge of finding new ways to serve our community’s teens—a high-risk group—and have experienced solid growth in teen members via our programming at both Carlsbad and Sage Creek High Schools, which is offered completely free of charge .

It is our objective to lead and uphold the tremendous values that are the hallmark of a Boys & Girls Club . We invite you to find out more by reviewing this Annual Report, visiting our website (www .bgccarlsbad .org), and stopping by one of our Clubhouses for your very own personal tour .

None of our accomplishments would be possible without the significant support of caring individuals, organizations, and businesses who believe in us . GREAT FUTURES START HERE . . .at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad!

Sincerely,

Brad Holland Travis VanTreeseCEO Board President

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD 2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT

ABOUT BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS

WHAT IS A BOYS & GIRLS CLUB?

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is to inspire our community’s young people to BE GREAT by offering educational, enriching, and fun experiences in a safe environment .

Our guiding values drive everything we do; we believe in safety, respect, leadership, teamwork, inclusion, and FUN! Our Clubhouses provide youngsters with a safe location for exploration and transformative experiences . Each child is given the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential in inspiring and engaging ways .

We offer youth a place to call their own, and have an open-door policy . With an annual membership fee of only $50 per year, no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay .

WHAT MAKES A BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS UNIQUE?

Members are given the freedom to make their own choices of what activities they’d like to participate in, gaining independence and self-confidence in the process .

Part-time, trained youth development professionals provide positive role models and mentorship . Volunteers provide key supplementary support .

The Club has an open-door policy, and is available every day after school and most school holidays when kids have free time and need positive, productive outlets .

The Club is facilities-based – an actual neighborhood building designed solely for youth programs and activities – and satisfies the age-old desire for kids to have a place to truly call their own .

WHAT PROGRAMS DOES A BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OFFER?

Designed to help young people gain a sense of self-perspective, Club programs specifically foster positive attitudes and behaviors . Our five core program areas include:

Character and Leadership Development Education and Career Development Health and Life Skills The Arts Sports, Fitness and Recreation

Our Clubhouse Directors are given the freedom to tailor specific programs within each of the above core areas based on member interest, time of year, and available resources .

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

History and Overview

Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad has served over 90,000 youth since it opened its doors in 1952 as the Carlsbad Boys Club . At first, the Club functioned mostly as a recreational site where young boys found a safe, fun-filled, nurturing environment . It served as a “home-away-from-home” for many single-parent working families .

In 1992, the Club officially changed its name to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, following the lead of the national organization to include females in its daily programming . Today, the Club emphasizes teaching positive life skills, provides educational enhancement, as well as a full spectrum of arts, recreation, and leadership development opportunities .

Over the past 66 years, the Club’s original location on Roosevelt Street in the Village of Carlsbad has been renovated five times . The most recent renovation, completed in 1999, marked the most dramatic changes in the Club with the addition of a dedicated technology center, covered swimming pool, gymnasium, and teen center . A second facility, housed in a mobile unit, was established in 1982 in La Costa to serve the southern sector of the city . In February 2012, the new state-of-the-art Bressi Ranch Clubhouse was opened in its entirety to replace the tiny La Costa branch . In 2015, teen programs were established at both Carlsbad and Sage Creek High Schools, extending the Club’s outreach and impact on this critical age group .

What Our Members Have to Say

The Club instills a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness, and influence, and we are proud of our rich heritage in the Carlsbad community . Here’s what some of our members and their families have to say about their Club experience .

“At a time and in a world that is riddled with challenges, kids find strength under your roof and are given the opportunity to learn valuable life lessons. They are encouraged to not only make good choices, but understand the process. More than words can ever convey, Jackson and I are deeply grateful to the Club and everyone connected to it. What you all do matters; you change lives in a profound and positive way!” Buck (Son is a Bressi Ranch Clubhouse Member)

“Thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, my daughters have become social, extroverted, confident young girls who are positive role models. The Club impacted my family’s life by establishing stability and providing a safe and positive environment for my daughters to develop and grow in. Their lives have been enhanced in so many ways; I am so grateful. The Club has truly been a blessing to my family.” Ruben (Daughters are Village Clubhouse Members)

“If it weren’t for the Boys & Girls Club, I’d be alone every day after school. Instead I’m at a place that makes me feel special. Everyone is so nice, and I have people I can look up to and lots of friends. The Club is my second home.” Sophia (Bressi Ranch Clubhouse Member)

The buildings we call “Clubhouses” are truly vibrant communities for our children – safe places of hope and opportunity .

Boys & Girls Clubs of America alumni report that Clubs continue to have both an immediate and long-lasting impact on their lives . In fact, 57% of alumni said the Club saved their life .

These testimonials are living proof that Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad impact young lives every day . The Club instills a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness, and influence, and we are proud of our rich heritage in the Carlsbad community .

THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB NATIONAL MOVEMENT

The Boys & Girls Club movement encompasses more than 1,100 independent organizations and the national organization, Boys & Girls Clubs of America . Local organizations serve young people and communities through some 4,300 Club locations . While Boys & Girls Clubs of America serves its local organizations, it does not manage the operations of individual Clubs, which are governed locally .

Among many highlights of the past year, national critical outcomes focused on three key areas: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles . Inherent in these strategic initiatives is the belief that every child – no matter how challenging their life circumstances – deserves opportunity for success . When young people enter the doors of a Club, they start down the path toward their own great futures .

National Movement Profile*

56% of Club members qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches On a typical day, 433,000 children and teens enter the doors of a Boys & Girls Club 364,000 adult staff and volunteers 61,000 adult professional staff 279,000 volunteers 24,000 board members In its 2016 Philanthropy 400 report, The Chronicle of Philanthropy ranked BGCA #1 among youth organizations

YOUTH OF THE YEAR 7Well deserving of this prestigious award, Maria is a junior at Carlsbad High School . She hopes to attend UCLA and major in Psychology . “My mom never graduated from high school . I want to be a role model for Latinas by living a healthy lifestyle and getting a higher education .”

Three adjectives describe Maria: role model, service, and determination . She was a WEB leader (Where Everyone Belongs) in 8th grade, helping incoming 6th graders have a positive transition from elementary to middle school . She helps her single father around the house and with her younger siblings, tutor peers, plans and organizes activities for younger Boys & Girls Club members, volunteers at the Humane Society, and ushers at her church .

“We are so proud of what Maria has accomplished,” said Program Director Abby Snyder . “She has navigated a number of challenging life situations with unique grace . She understands the importance of education, and has taken advantage of every opportunity presented to her .”

“Being named the Youth of the Year means that I will now be able to help and inspire even more kids who are going through tough situations,” stated Maria . “I’m so proud of this accomplishment, because it will allow me to share the challenges I went through in the past in order to help others .”

Polina Past2017 Youth of the Year Runner UpThe Armory at Carlsbad High School has been a major part of Polina’s high school journey . When she was a freshman, she would attend daily and generally keep to herself . Slowly over time, she came out of her shell and opened up to the Armory’s staff members, who helped her become more outgoing and friendly .

An aspiring author, Polina has already self-published her own book of poems . In addition, she runs her own photography business, and even started the Academic Science Club at CHS . She is also a varsity member of the soccer team . Today Pollina is an intelligent, persevering leader who strives to help others who may be feeling shy or cautious when they first attend The Armory . Remember her name, because we are sure she’ll leave her mark in history!

Morgan Heuser2017 Youth of the Year FinalistMorgan is a passionate advocate and public speaker . Being raised by a single mother, she has overcome bullying and anxiety to define the person she is today . Morgan loves a good discussion, and she seeks inspiration by talking about issues that face our youth today like politics, women’s rights, and the education system .

With the support of The Armory, Morgan has been given opportunities that have helped her to use her voice and words for change . A member of the Speech & Debate Club, Morgan aspires to be a lawyer when she grows up .

Our Youth of the Year applicants are screened and judged on leadership qualities as well as exemplary character, academic achievement, and service to Boys & Girls Clubs and their community . Thanks to the generosity of Julie and Matt Harelson, a $10,000 college scholarship is provided to our Youth of the Year winner . Scholarships for the other finalists are provided courtesy of Keith Blackburn .

Previous Youth of the Year winners include:2016 Zachary Munitz 2006 Aurora Jimenez2015 Vanessa Perez 2005 Toni Brown 2014 Vanessa Garcia 2004 Melissa Uribe2013 Jonathan Miller 2003 Tyson Garcia2012 Julianna Garner 2002 Breanna Racheck2011 Gerald Ball 2001 Trevor Ball2010 Cierra Halstead 2000 Laura Rudolph2009 Prashant Bhat 2007 Myriam Rodriguez2008 Donna Anderson

Maria De La Mora2017 Youth of the YearMaria was introduced to the Boys & Girls Club in 2009 . She had just moved to California from Mexico, didn’t speak a word of English, and was frightened . It was hard for her to communicate or make friends . But with the help of the Club, Maria was able to break out of her shell, gather her courage, become more confident, and be a strong role model .

“I would go the Club every day after school . As time passed, my fear diminished . I developed friendships with other Club members and grew close to many of the staff . I couldn’t wait to go to the Club because I knew my afternoon would be filled with fun and joy . At the Club I learned to be a good leader, I discovered my passions, and overcame my fears .”

The oldest of three girls, Maria has faced a number of obstacles in her young life . Shortly after arriving in the U .S ., her parents divorced . “I was devastated about the divorce . The Club helped my family by inviting my mom, dad, sisters, and me to classes where kids and parents learn how to deal with the many challenges that come with divorce .”

YEAR IN REVIEW

An active Board of Directors, dedicated staff, and generous community members and business leaders have all worked tirelessly to raise the level of performance at Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2018 . Here are just a few of the year’s highlights .

Programs and Services - Bressi Ranch Clubhouse A fresh new STEM approach to Club programming occurred this year, which was facilitated by staff and volunteers in that

field . New programs included Coding for Kids, NASA Space Club, Mr . Bill’s Science Club, and many others . Members were also encouraged to unplug and let loose with programs like Yoga, Karaoke Club, and Harry Potter Club .

Partnering with New Village Arts, a spring production of “Peter Pan” was produced . Members had the experience of auditioning, practicing, and performing; gaining exposure to arts and theater as well as self-confidence along the way .

Our incentive-based homework help program, Power Hour, not only allows kids the help they need to succeed in school, but gives them more quality family time in the evenings .

Programs and Services - Village Clubhouse Our school year enrichment clubs continue to provide members with support in academic performance, healthy lifestyles,

character building, and leadership development . Some of the most popular offerings include healthy cooking, tutoring hour, leadership, video production, jewelry design, and skate club .

Our Kids Leadership Team attended WE Day, an annual youth empowerment conference at The Forum in LA, as well as the Dude Be Nice campaign thanks to the generosity of local businesses .

The Inaugural Family Art Night was a huge success – members’ artwork was showcased, and the kids got to participate in an interactive community art project .

Monthly Friday Late Nights were a big hit with both parents and kids; providing parents with a date night and children with fun-filled games and activities with friends . A win-win!

Our Middle School program facilitated our ever-popular series of Cook Offs, inviting local community members to join us at the Village Clubhouse to be judges of our member-cooked dishes .

The intramural sports program was a big hit this year; boasting friendly tournaments with the San Marcos and Vista Boys & Girls Clubs .

Programs and Services - Aquatics The Little Ducklings Program, which provides swim lessons for children ages 6-14, added four new levels . Our Club Kids Swim program also grew in popularity, averaging 80 members daily during the summer .

Programs and Services - Bobcat Bay Bobcat Bay, our free daily after-school program at Sage Creek High School, experienced a 14% increase in average daily

attendance . Themed months that revolve around character development – such as Be The Change, Random Acts of Kindness, and

Leadership Month – were introduced . Community outreach opportunities and staff trainings for leadership development were provided .

Programs and Services - The Armory The Armory, our free daily after-school program at Carlsbad High School completed an impactful 4th year on campus with

weekly community service opportunities, daily tutoring sessions, positive peer and mentor relationship building, and a bi-monthly workshop series .

Our “Cultivating Wellness” seminar series included topics on stress management, SAT preparation, healthy eating, college planning, and healthy relationships .

Armory members had a plethora of volunteer opportunities to do community service around North County in conjunction with local nonprofits and businesses .

Membership increased to about 180 members, averaging 50 teens attending daily .

Programs and Services - Athletics Pacific Coast Hoops (PCH) has five competitive teams as well as a high school elite team . PCH is designed for skill development

and top notch competition . The Club’s Youth Basketball League (YBL) now offers year-round leagues . The YBL is unique as it’s the only 3 vs 3 coed league in

North County . Our middle school leagues produced Coastal North Conference Champions in girls’ volleyball, co-ed golf, boys basketball, track

and field, and cross country .

Board and Administration Under the successful leadership of Executive Board Member Sharone Story, the board’s annual “Kids Campaign” exceeded

$260,000 . The Club was awarded Charity Navigator’s coveted 4-star rating for the third year, putting it in a very select group of high-

performing charities . The Club’s four major fundraising events – a golf tournament, beach bocce ball championship, gala, and poker tournament –

shattered previous records, netting nearly $700,000 and engaging thousands of community supporters .
