What can you do to reverse the New Mexico Brain Drain?Braindrain istheprocess inwhichastate,suchasNewMexico, loses itsmosteducatedandtalentedworkforcetootherstatesthroughmigrationforthelackofapparentopportunities.ForNewMexico,thisisaproblembecausethemosthighlyskilledandcompetentindividuals,suchasSTEMprofessionals,leaveandcontributetheirexpertisetootherstateeconomies.BraindrainisparticularlydistressingwhentheskilledworkforcetrulywantstostayinNewMexico,butcannotduetotheperceivedlackofopportunitiesforthehighlyskilledSTEMworkforce.
Currently,thisisthecaseinNewMexico,whichisseeingtheeconomiceffectsandnegativerepercussionsofbraindrain,whichinclude:
- Lossoftaxrevenue- Lossoffutureentrepreneurs- Ashortageofimportant,highlyskilledworkers- Lackofconfidenceintheeconomy- Lossofinnovativeideas
The NM Educated Workforce in STEM (NEWS) Symposium The goal of theNEWS Symposium is to re-introduce highly educated STEMprofessionals to theNewMexico high tech economy. Through the NEWS Symposium, we can now show these young STEMprofessionalsthatthereisavibrant,creativeeconomyinNewMexico.AttheNEWSSymposium,wewillintroducethesehighlyskilledSTEMprofessionalstoeconomic,government,biotech/techandbusinessleaders from across the state for the purpose of job matching, sharing ideas and redeveloping aconnectiontothelocalandstateeconomy.TheseSTEMprofessionalsareuniqueinthatmanyofthemhaveadvanceddegrees,strongpersonalandprofessionalnetworks,andwanttoreturntoNewMexico.It is our intention to introduce business leaders to the STEMworkforce to further aid these efforts.Through these interactions, companies will find good matches for their various unfilled positions,benefittingtheirorganizationswhileprovidinganavenueforrepatriationtotheSTEMworkforceseekingtodoso.

Figure 1: Education level of theNEWS survey respondents –Over 90% of all respondents (n = 111)indicatedthattheyholdoneormoreofthefollowingSTEMdegrees:BS,MS,orPhD.Figure2:Careerinterests–Respondents(n=112)wereaskedtochooseallintereststhatapplytothem.Themajorityindicatedaninterestinacademiaandtechnology/biotechnology,followedbystartingtheirownbusinessandpost-doctoralopportunities.Over50respondentsaresointerestedinreturningtoNewMexicothattheywouldconsider‘whateverworks’andwouldmakeuseoftheirSTEMeducationandskillset.Figure3:Timingofavailability–Almost50%ofallrespondents(n=107)arereadytomakethemovetoNewMexiconoworwithinthenextyear.About25%ofallrespondentsindicatedthattheywouldbeavailabletoreturntoNewMexicowithinthenext2-3years.Figure4:Sectorofinterest–Whenaskedtocheckallthatapply,themajorityofrespondents indicated(inpercent,n=105)thattheywereinterestedinemploymentopportunitiesinbiotech/tech,nationallabs/government,andacademia.Anadditional20%wereinterestedinspeakingwithventurecapitalistsbecausetheyhaveoneormoreviableidea(s)forastartupcompany.
