About the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards

The Nebraska High School Theatre Awards is designed to celebrate the artistic achievements of high schools, teachers and

students involved in musical theatre, support schools by providing high-quality learning, performing and creative experiences

for students, and advocate for the importance of high school theatre education in Nebraska. To participate, schools register to

have their musical theatre productions reviewed by a qualified team of adjudicators who provide schools with educationally

focused feedback.

The program culminates in an annual Awards Showcase to recognize the outstanding achievements of participating high

schools. Modeled after the Tony Awards®, this red carpet ceremony features outstanding student performances with awards

for top ensembles, performers, excellence behind-the-scenes and more. The Awards Showcase gives students from

participating high schools the chance to perform at a professional venue and work with a Broadway Music Director and

Choreographer. The fourth annual Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase will take place at 7:30pm on Thursday,

June 8, 2017 at the Holland Performing Arts Center.

The Nebraska High School Theatre Awards provides participants with a number of free learning opportunities throughout the

year, including: master classes, in-school workshops and pre-professional training with Broadway teaching artists, free or

deeply discounted tickets to select Broadway touring shows when available, performance and audition experiences, feedback

from performing arts professionals, distance learning activities, the chance to participate in the National High School Musical

Theatre Awards in NYC and more.

Omaha Performing Arts launched the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards in 2013, with an inaugural group of 22

participating high schools in the Omaha area. In 2014 the program expanded to reach 38 schools in Omaha, Lincoln and

surrounding Nebraska communities. Last year, the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards expanded to include 51 high schools,

and this year the program will expand again to include up to 60 schools within 285 miles of the Holland Center. Omaha

Performing Arts plans to continue expanding the program over the next few years to serve schools throughout Nebraska. The

Nebraska High School Theatre Awards is sponsored by Wells Fargo, the Midlands Community Foundation, The Presenters, the

Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

How to Participate Eligibility

The Nebraska High School Theatre Awards is open to public and private high schools producing musical theatre productions.

To be eligible for participation for the 2016/2017 Season, a school should meet the following qualifications:

School Location

High schools should be located within a 285-mile radius of Omaha Performing Arts administrative offices at the

Holland Performing Arts Center, 1200 Douglas Street, Omaha, NE 68102.

Production Dates

High school musical theatre productions should take place between September 22, 2016 and April 30, 2017.

Types of Productions

Musical theatre productions should fall into one or more of the following categories:

1. A published musical, operetta, or revue (either currently held by a licensing house or in the public domain)

presented with the approval or permission of the original creators, publishers, or their representatives.

2. A new or unpublished musical, operetta, or revue (featuring an original script, music, and lyrics) presented with

the approval or permission of the original creators or their representatives.

3. An original musical theatre compilation featuring excerpts or scenes from a variety of sources (either currently

held by a licensing house or in the public domain) presented with the approval or permission of the original

creators or their representatives.

Registration & Fees

Registration is available online at NebraskaHSTA.org. High schools must submit the online registration form to participate.

Schools do not need to have their shows or performance dates confirmed to register. Registrations are accepted on a first-

come, first-serve basis until Wednesday, November 30, 2016. A $100 registration fee is required to participate. After

submitting the online registration form, an OPA staff member will send you a confirmation email, which will act as an invoice.

Registration fees are due within 90 days of receiving the invoice. Checks should be made payable to Omaha Performing Arts.

Assessment Teachers and students will be asked to complete printed or electronic surveys following certain program activities. OPA may

also request letters of support and testimonials. Surveys will evaluate participants’ experiences and aid in the development of

future program activities. OPA also hosts an annual feedback meeting and reception for teachers in June.

Primary Contact Each school must identify a primary contact person on the online registration form. The primary contact should have regular

access to phone and email as all major correspondence regarding the program will be directed to this person.

Time Commitment Omaha Performing Arts knows that many hours of hard work go into preparing a high school musical theatre production. One

of the goals of the program is not to create additional work for teachers, but to provide visibility for the work that is already

being produced. During the school year, there is little additional time commitment from teachers other than communicating

information from Omaha Performing Arts staff to students and vice versa.

Publicity & Social Media One of the goals of the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards is to enhance visibility of participating high school musical

theatre productions and drama programs. Omaha Performing Arts may post production photos and show information from

participating high school musicals on the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards website and social media sites. OPA may also

share show information with local media personnel.

Omaha Performing Arts also encourages high schools to announce their participation in the Nebraska High School Theatre

Adjudication

Omaha Performing Arts has selected a team of performing arts professionals with backgrounds in education, music, theatre,

dance, and related fields to serve as adjudicators for the 2016/2017 Season. Three adjudicators from this highly qualified team

will attend and evaluate participating musical theatre productions. A listing of 2016/2017 adjudicators and their bios are

posted on our website at NebraskaHSTA.org.

Evaluation Process Adjudicators are responsible for evaluating how well each high school musical theatre production is meeting or

exceeding its potential. The purpose of the evaluation process is to provide each school with educational feedback in

the hopes of commending the notable achievements of each production and offering solutions to the aspects where

productions could improve. Each production is evaluated against itself for consideration, rather than against all other

school productions, charging schools to create the best possible work in their unique circumstance and environment.

Evaluations consist of feedback and scores:

Feedback

Adjudicators will provide written feedback on performances by students in lead, supporting and ensemble

roles, and the overall production. Feedback is designed to function as an educational tool, not strictly a

review or critique. OPA staff will email adjudicator feedback to the school’s primary contact approximately 1

week after the production has been evaluated.

Scores

Using a scoring rubric, adjudicators will rate performances by students in lead, supporting and ensemble

roles, and the overall production to designate awards for artistic excellence in each award category. On a

scale of 1-4 (with 4 being the highest score and 1 being the lowest score), adjudicators use the scoring rubric

below to rank how well the evaluation criteria are executed by students. Once the final high school musical

theatre production has been evaluated, adjudicators will meet in a roundtable setting to review the final

scores and determine winners in each award category.

Evaluation Criteria

Adjudicators will evaluate how well the following components were executed for the high school level:

Singing & Vocal Music

Accuracy: pitch, rhythm, intonation

Tone: quality, resonance, projection

Technique: dynamics, breath support, posture, placement, phrasing

Diction: articulation, vowel shapes, appropriate use of consonants

Acting

Believability: relationships with other characters, consistency, motivation

Voice & Diction: projection, volume, intelligibility, articulation, maintenance of dialect (if applicable)

Energy & Presence: animation, stage presence, confidence, professionalism

Interpretation: character goals/objectives, physical and vocal choices, character development

Movement & Dance

Staging: preparedness, natural integration of blocking, motivation, entrances/exits

Choreography: footwork, body position, quality of movement, energy, precision, rhythm/tempo

Characterization: facial expressions, gestures, focus

Overall Performance

Story: communication of major ideas, themes and emotions to audience

Combined theatrical elements: quality of acting, dance/movement, singing

Professionalism: teamwork, preparedness, commitment

Adjudicator Tickets

Omaha Performing Arts staff will email schools to confirm which performances will be attended by adjudicators. Once a

school’s adjudication dates are confirmed, the school should reserve up to 2 complimentary tickets per adjudicator. Please

hold all adjudicator tickets at Will Call under the name “OPA Adjudicator.” Please note that the adjudication panel may or

may not attend the same performance – tickets should be held for the performance date/time requested by OPA staff.

Confidentiality

Feedback and scoring will be submitted through a secure online form. Please note that adjudicators will not provide oral

critiques following the performance, nor should schools expect to receive scores. Adjudicators must not discuss their opinions,

evaluations, scores, or feedback with anyone in any format. This includes, but is not limited to: faculty, staff, and students

from participating high schools, other adjudicators, colleagues, reviewers, social media networks, etc. Please do not contact

adjudicators with questions – all inquiries should be directed to OPA staff.

Production Videos

It is highly recommended (though not required) that schools submit an archival video of their high school musicals to Omaha

Performing Arts before the adjudication period closes on May 1, 2017. If necessary, videos will be viewed by the adjudication

panel as a tiebreaker tool when determining winners in each award category.

The Nebraska High School Theatre Awards program gives participating schools and students the opportunity to win awards for

artistic excellence in several categories. The award categories for the 2016/2017 Season include:

Winners in all award categories will receive a Nebraska High School Theatre Awards trophy and special recognition at the

Awards Showcase.


Ten high school musical theatre productions will be recognized in this award category. Winners will be determined by

adjudicator scores. High schools receiving awards for Outstanding Musical Theatre Production will be invited to perform a 5-

minute number from their award-winning musical at the Awards Showcase.


Ten ensembles will be recognized as winners in this award category. Winners will be determined by adjudicator scores.

Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role

Twenty student performers (ten actors and ten actresses) will be recognized as winners in this award category. Winners will

be determined by adjudicator scores. Students receiving awards for Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role will be invited to

perform a solo from their award-winning role at the Awards Showcase. Students will be featured in 1 of 4 interschool

medleys.

Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role

Twenty student performers (ten actors and ten actresses) will be recognized as winners in this award category. Winners will

be determined by adjudicator scores.

One backstage crew or group of students demonstrating excellence behind-the-scenes will be recognized as winners in this

award category. Teachers are responsible for nominating students for this award. Guidelines for nominating students for the

Backstage Excellence Award are available on page 25.


One student demonstrating excellence in stage management will be recognized as a winner in this award category. The

winner will be determined through an application process. Students are responsible for submitting an application for this

award. The guidelines and application instructions for Outstanding Achievement in Stage Management are available on page

23.


Students demonstrating excellence in costume, lighting, scenic, hair/makeup or sound design may be recognized as winners in

this award category. Winners will be determined through an application process. Students are responsible for submitting an

application for this award. The guidelines and application instructions for Outstanding Achievement in Design are available on

page 24.


One teacher who embodies the highest standards in performing arts education and demonstrates a positive impact on the

lives of students will be recognized in this category. Educators may be nominated by anyone: a current or past student, a

fellow educator, a school administrator, a parent, or any community member. The guidelines for nominating a teacher for the

Outstanding Educator Award are available on page 26.

National Finalists & Nominees

Each year, the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards nominates 2 students (1 actor and 1 actress) to compete with other top

musical theatre students from across the nation at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in NYC. Students are

selected through an audition process. Students playing lead roles in their adjudicated high school musicals are eligible to

audition in April 2017. From the audition, up to 12 students will be selected as National Finalists. National Finalists will be

invited to perform in a special number at the Awards Showcase. The 2 nominees will be selected from the group of finalists.

Nominees will be announced live onstage at the Awards Showcase. More information on the National High School Musical

Theatre Awards is available on page 13.

Award-winning schools and students will be announced the week of May 1, 2017.

Awards Showcase Each year, Omaha Performing Arts presents a Tony Awards® inspired showcase to honor and celebrate participating schools

and students. The fourth annual Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase will take place at 7:30 PM on Thursday,

June 8, 2017 at the Holland Performing Arts Center’s Kiewit Concert Hall. This red-carpet event is a tribute to the

enthusiasm, dedication, and accomplishments of our state’s high school musical theatre programs. Participants have the

opportunity to win awards and perform as a part of that evening’s program. All schools and students receiving awards will

receive special recognition at the Awards Showcase. Students, faculty and staff from participating high schools are encouraged

to attend the Awards Showcase.

Performance Opportunities The Awards Showcase gives students from all participating high schools the chance to perform at a professional venue and

work with a Broadway Music Director and Choreographer. Throughout the course of the evening, audiences will experience

the following performances:

Award-Winning Productions

Each of the 10 high schools receiving awards for Outstanding Musical Theatre Production will be invited to perform a

5-minute number from their award-winning musical.

The 20 students (10 actors and 10 actresses) receiving awards for Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role will be

invited to perform solos from their award-winning performances in 4 different interschool medleys.

Showcase Ensemble

Each school is invited to select 2 students to join the 2016/2017 Showcase Ensemble and perform in the opening

and/or closing number at the Awards Showcase. Teachers are responsible for selecting students to participate in the

Showcase Ensemble. Please send the names and contact information for the students you’ve selected for the 2017

Showcase Ensemble to [email protected] by Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

National Finalists

Up to 12 finalists (6 actors and 6 actresses) from the National High School Musical Theatre Awards audition will be

invited to perform in a special number at the Awards Showcase. More information on the National High School

Policy for Students Performing in Multiple Groups

We recognize that some students may be eligible to perform in more than one of the groups listed above. Students

may perform with more than one group, but because of overlaps between rehearsals some restrictions apply. Here is

a list of allowed overlaps between performance groups:

Students who are performing in the Showcase Ensemble cannot perform in the Lead Medley or National

Finalist Groups and vice versa

Creative Team & Key Personnel

The NHSTA Showcase gives students the chance to work with a variety of performing arts professionals and perform at a

world-class venue. OPA has hired a professional pit band to play for the performance and a Broadway Choreographer and

Music Director. In addition, OPA has an in-house team of union personnel, including a Production Manager, Stage Manager,

Lighting Designer, Audio Engineers, and Stage Hands working to produce this show.

Music

After award-winning schools and students are announced, the winners of Outstanding Musical Theatre Production and

Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role will need to select/submit the music they plan to perform at the showcase by May

17. If applicable, schools will also need to provide a list of soloists at this time. We need to begin arranging music and setting

microphone plots as soon as possible so it is vital that we collect this information from schools in a timely manner. All schools

should retain copies of their conductor piano/vocal scores just in case. OPA has already secured agreements with licensing

houses and representatives for ALL participants to ensure that schools are not responsible for any additional fees

associated with showcase.

Rehearsals

Awards Showcase rehearsals are tentatively scheduled to run Monday, June 5 – Wednesday, June 7, 2017 with an afternoon

dress rehearsal and 7:30 PM performance on Thursday, June 8, 2017. The Awards Showcase performance and rehearsals will

take place at the Holland Performing Arts Center (1200 Douglas Street, Omaha, NE 68102). Here are general guidelines for

each performance group and award-recipients:

The Showcase Ensemble, National Finalists, and winners of Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role should be

available to rehearse all day Monday – Thursday that week.

Winners of Outstanding Musical Theatre Production should be available for a tech/spacing rehearsal on Tuesday or

Wednesday (each school will be assigned a specific time slot) and Thursday that week.

All award recipients who are not performing as a part of the showcase should make best efforts to attend the dress

rehearsal on Thursday, June 8.

A detailed rehearsal schedule with specific call times will be provided in spring 2017.

Housing

Because of this year’s intensive rehearsal schedule, OPA will provide students performing as a part of the Showcase Ensemble,

National Finalists, and winners of Outstanding Performance in a Lead Role with free housing the evenings of June 5 – 8, 2017.

Students will be staying in the dormitories of an Omaha-area University. OPA will hire experienced chaperones to stay with

students in the dorms and accompany them to/from rehearsals each day. OPA will also provide students and chaperones with

transportation to/from rehearsals each day. If your students are interested in free housing, please notify OPA staff ASAP.

The deadline for housing requests is Monday, May 10, 2017. Students who elect to stay in the dorms must adhere to Omaha

Performing Arts Code of Conduct and complete a Housing Release Form. These documents will be provided in spring 2017.

Meals

Students performing as a part of the Showcase Ensemble, National Finalists and winners of Outstanding Performance in a

Lead Role will receive free lunch and dinner between rehearsals June 5 – 8. Free dinner will be provided to all performers and

award recipients who attend the dress rehearsal on June 8. Students staying in the dorms will also receive free breakfast each

morning. Please notify OPA staff of any dietary restrictions/food allergies by Monday, May 10.

Security

The Holland Center is a secure building with an on-site security guard, first responder (in case of medical emergency), full-time

education staff and chaperones to ensure that all students participating in the program are safe/accounted for during their

time at the Holland Center and the dorms. All Omaha Performing Arts education staff and chaperones have experience

working with high school students and have passed extensive background checks. All student performers must enter through

the Holland Stage Door and check-in with security when they arrive/leave the Holland Center. The Stage Door is located on

the north side of the building between 12th and 13th streets on Dodge Street. Students are not permitted to leave between

rehearsals without prior written consent from a parent or legal guardian and/or the accompaniment of a NHSTA Chaperone.

Parking

Metered parking is available throughout the Omaha Downtown/Old Market area. Parking will be provided for school

buses/vans – please notify OPA staff with school bus/van parking needs by Thursday, May 25.

Attire

The Awards Showcase is a red-carpet event and celebratory attire is encouraged! Students performing as a part of the Awards

Showcase will not wear costumes; however, minor props and costumes pieces may be allowed. All students performing in the

Showcase Ensemble, an award-winning production number, and National Finalists will receive a NHSTA t-shirt, which should

be worn with black pants or leggings and black shoes for the dress rehearsal and performance. Students performing in a lead

medley will also receive NHSTA t-shirts; however, they should plan on wearing their red-carpet attire for the dress rehearsal

and performance. Additional NHSTA t-shirts for teachers, directors, and other award-winning students are available upon

request. T-shirt requests and sizes (small, medium, large, extra-large) should be emailed to

[email protected] by Friday, May 19, 2017. Remember – this is a red carpet event, and everyone is

encouraged to dress up! If student performers would like to change into awards ceremony attire before/after performing,

dressing rooms will be available.

Tickets

The Awards Showcase is open to the public, and students, faculty and staff from participating high schools, along with family

and friends, are strongly encouraged to attend this exciting event. Tickets go on sale in March 2017 for only $10 general

admission. To purchase tickets, call 402-345-0606 or visit TicketOmaha.com. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the

Ticket Omaha Box Office, located on the ground floor of the Holland Performing Arts Center (1200 Douglas Street, Omaha, NE

68102). Here is our complimentary ticket policy:

Each participating high school may request up to 10 complimentary tickets to share with their principals, directors,

music directors, and/or other faculty and staff at their school.

In addition, award recipients in all categories will receive 1 comp ticket for themselves, and can request 1 additional

comp ticket to share with a guest.

Performers DO NOT need tickets; however, all performers may request 1 comp ticket to share with a guest.

the name the tickets should be held under by Thursday, June 1, 2017.

All complimentary tickets will be held at the Holland Center box office (ground floor/ticket office). Tickets will be held under

the name provided in your complimentary ticket request and will be available for pick-up as early as 6:30 PM the evening of

the performance.

Reserved Seating

Seating is general admission, but reserved seating will be provided for teachers/students who will be accepting awards – all

award recipients will be given more information on reserved seating at the dress rehearsal on June 8, 2017.

Teacher Reception

Teachers from participating high schools are invited to the Founders Room for free drinks and snacks before the show and

during intermission. Please RSVP to [email protected] by Monday, May 22, 2017 to attend.

Estimated Run Times

The Holland Center lobbies and red carpet will open at 6:00 PM, the house will open at 7:00 PM, and the show will begin at

7:30 PM. Here are estimated run times for the Awards Showcase:

Act I = estimated 75 minutes

Intermission = 20 minutes

Act II = estimated 60 minutes

Audience members are encouraged to arrive to the show early to get their picture taken on the red carpet! Please note that

estimated run times are subject to change and are included in this handbook for planning purposes only.

Post-Show Reception

After the show, audience members and performers are invited to enjoy snacks and refreshments in the lobby.

National High School Musical Theatre Awards

The Nebraska High School Theatre Awards is proud to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards

(NHSMTA). Each year, two outstanding student performers (one lead actor and one lead actress) will be nominated to

represent the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards at Nationals in NYC. There is no financial obligation for nominees. All

travel, accommodation, and food costs will be paid for by Omaha Performing Arts. The 2016/2017 NHSMTA nominees will be

announced live at the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

About Nationals Student nominees join top musical theatre students from across the country for a weeklong theatre intensive in NYC

where they experience private coaching, master classes and rehearsals in preparation for a special showcase

performance at the Minskoff Theater on Broadway. The National High School Musical Theatre Awards was

established in 2009 to elevate the importance of theatre arts education in schools and reward excellence in student

theatre competitions sponsored by presenters of touring Broadway productions throughout the United States. Each

year, regional programs nominate outstanding student performers to participate in the national competition. Visit

Auditions Student nominees will be determined through an audition process. The audition panel will select up to 12 National

Finalists to perform as a part of the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase. From the group of National

Finalists, the audition panel will nominate 2 outstanding student performers (1 actor and 1 actress) to participate in

the 2017 National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Auditions are tentatively scheduled to take place in April

Learning Opportunities

All students at registered high schools are eligible to participate in a number of learning opportunities throughout the year,

including master classes and in-school workshops with Broadway teaching artists, feedback from performing arts

professionals, free or discounted tickets to touring Broadway shows when available, distance learning activities, and much

more.

Master Classes & Workshops

Free master classes led by Broadway teaching artists and industry professionals are available to all students at

participating NHSTA schools. Master class topics include musical theatre-style dance, vocal music, stage combat,

acting, improvisational theatre, technical theatre and design, audition techniques and more. Master class dates,

times, locations and registration forms will be available online at NebraskaHSTA.org approx. 1 month prior to the

class. OPA staff will also email your school’s primary contact with master class and workshop updates. Here is an

Master class and workshop offerings are subject to change and are included in this handbook for planning purposes

only. Additional classes and workshops may become available throughout the year. To participate, teachers should

register student groups online at NebraskaHSTA.org. Space is limited and participation caps may apply. Please note

that Omaha Performing Arts must have a completed Informed Consent & Photo Release form on file for each

participating student before the master class or workshop takes place.

Pre-Show Evaluation

Schools have the option of requesting a pre-show evaluation to receive oral feedback from adjudicators during the

rehearsal process. The Nebraska High School Theatre Awards will provide each participating high school with one

FREE pre-show evaluation for the 2016/2017 Season. Schools are responsible for scheduling pre-show evaluations. A

list of pre-show evaluators and their contact information will be available at NebraskaHSTA.org in October 2016. Pre-

show evaluations are offered as an additional learning opportunity and are NOT connected to adjudicator scoring or

written feedback. Please note – schools interested in booking additional pre-show evaluation sessions, workshops or

other learning opportunities with adjudicators are responsible for arranging all details of the engagement, including

payment.

Distance Learning – Broadway Speakers Bureau

The Broadway Speakers Bureau offers interactive distance learning seminars to share information about non-

performance careers in the arts (producing, general management, marketing, press, stage management, etc.) with

schools around the country. Speakers include award-winning professionals associated with many of the top Broadway

shows such as WICKED, BILLY ELLIOT, FOLLIES, RENT and more. Panelists conduct discussions from a New York City

studio via distance learning video conferencing. These seminars are live (not taped), and students are encouraged to

ask questions of the speakers. The Broadway Speakers Bureau discussions are produced in partnership with The

Broadway League. The Broadway League is happy to arrange individual distance learning opportunities on a variety of

requested topics for participating NHSTA schools upon request. For more information or to schedule a seminar,

Free tickets to touring Broadway shows at the Orpheum Theater are distributed to NHSTA students and teachers

before any other group when available. Free tickets are distributed on a first come, first served basis. If free tickets

are available, OPA staff will email participating schools with more details on the ticket reservation process.

Student Rush Discounts

Students of all ages are invited to register for Student Rush discounts. Students who register will receive

Student Rush emails and updates about upcoming performances. You'll have the chance to see select events

at the Holland Center and Orpheum Theater for as low as $10. Plus, receive 50% off some shows, including

Broadway. Student Rush tickets can only be purchased beginning 90 minutes prior to the performance. Don't

forget your student ID! The limit is two per student and all tickets are subject to availability. Tickets may be

purchased in person only at the box office of the venue in which the performance will be held. More

Forms & Documents Participation Statement All participating high schools are required to feature the 2016/2017 Nebraska High School Theatre Awards participation

statement and logo as a part of their printed program books. Inclusion of this information serves as the school’s endorsement

of the program. A copy of the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards participation statement is included on page 21. This

document is also available for download on our website at NebraskaHSTA.org.

Production Information Form Each school will receive an individualized production information form via email approximately 1 month before their show.

Completed forms should be emailed to [email protected] at least 2 weeks before your show opens. The

production information form asks schools to provide cast lists, show dates, times and other information needed by

adjudicators to evaluate productions. The form also gives schools the option of sharing supplementary information on their

productions, including: the resources available to the school or theatre department, director’s notes, the rationale behind

artistic choices, specific areas the school would like feedback on, etc.

Informed Consent & Photo Release Form Omaha Performing Arts must have a completed informed consent and photo release form on file for all students participating

in any 2016/2017 Nebraska High School Theatre Awards activities, including master classes, Awards Showcase rehearsals,

performances, and other program events. Please note that students under the age of 18 are required to obtain the signature

of a parent/legal guardian to complete the form. Teachers only need to submit one completed form per student for the

2016/2017 school year. Teachers are encouraged to submit forms for all students who might participate in Nebraska High

School Theatre Awards activities in any capacity at the beginning of the school year. Completed forms can be scanned and

emailed to [email protected], faxed to 402.345.0222 (Attn: NHSTA), or mailed to Omaha Performing Arts,

Attn: NHSTA, 1200 Douglas Street, Omaha, NE 68102. A copy of the Informed Consent & Photo Release Form is available on

Application Guidelines: Outstanding Achievement in Stage Management

The award for Outstanding Achievement in Stage Management honors one student who demonstrates leadership,

professionalism, and a commitment to excellence in stage management. Student stage managers or assistant stage managers

are eligible for this award. The winner will be determined through an application process. Applications will be reviewed by

panel of local theatre professionals who will select a winner to be honored at the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards

Showcase on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Holland Center. The winner will receive 2 complimentary tickets to the Awards

Showcase. Students will be able to submit applications starting in November 2016. The deadline for applications is Friday,

April 21, 2016.

excellence in costume, hair/makeup, scenic, sound or lighting design. Winners will be determined through an application

process. Students may submit multiple applications in different design categories (e.g. one application for a costume design

and another application for a scenic design). Each application should focus on one design project or concept. The design can

be conceptual or from a production that took place/will take place during the 2016/2017 school year. Applications will be

reviewed by panel of local theatre professionals who will select winners to be honored at the Nebraska High School Theatre

Awards Showcase on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the Holland Center. Award-winning students will receive complimentary

tickets to the Awards Showcase. Students will be able to submit applications starting in November 2016. The deadline for

Nomination Guidelines: Backstage Excellence Award

The Backstage Excellence Award honors one group of students for demonstrating teamwork, professionalism and a

commitment to excellence behind-the-scenes. Student run crews, costume crews, set construction crews, stagehands or any

group of students who have dedicated time in a backstage capacity are eligible. Students should be nominated for

contributing to their school’s participating 2016/2017 NHSTA musical. Teachers are responsible for nominating students for

the Backstage Excellence Award. Nominations will be reviewed by panel of local theatre professionals who will select winners

to be honored at the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase on Thursday, June 8, 2016 at the Holland Center.

Award-winning students will receive complimentary tickets to attend the showcase. Teachers will be able to submit

nominations starting in November 2016. The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 21, 2016.

The Outstanding Educator Award honors teachers at participating Nebraska High School Theatre Awards

schools for their outstanding achievements in performing arts education. This new award will recognize one

educator who embodies the highest standards in performing arts education and demonstrates a positive

impact on the lives of students. The winner will be determined through a nomination process. Current or past

students, fellow educators, school administrators, or community members may nominate teachers for this

award. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel of performing arts education professionals who will select a

winner to be honored at the Nebraska High School Theatre Awards Showcase. Nominations will be accepted

starting in November 2016. The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 21, 2016.

How to Nominate Teachers

To nominate a teacher for the Outstanding Educator Award, submit the online nomination form at

NebraskaHSTA.org. To complete the form, please be prepared to provide the following information:
