ARTISTS SHIFTING PERCEPTIONS It has been another year of awe-inspiring and provocative work generated by Artsadmin, reaching audiences near and far.

This year, many of works produced by Artsadmin have invited audiences to look at the world around them differently − whether faced with the harsh realities of capitalism by running a clothes factory during METIS’ performance-game, World Factory, or donnning a pair of stranger’s shoes and walking a mile listening to their story in Clare Patey’s Empathy Museum.

Artsadmin’s achievements would not have been possible without our partner venues and festivals from across the world, and in particular our European partners, who we value even more in light of recent uncertainties about Europe’s cohesion.

We are attracting more and more visitors to our home at Toynbee Studios, both to see our vibrant public programme of radical performances and to participate in our artist development activities, which include mentoring, labs and workshops.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all of our funders, donors and supporters for ensuring that Artsadmin continues its vital and challenging work with and for the arts community, artists and above all, audiences.

WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLEArtsadmin’s three-year summer project Make Space, led by Nic Green, culminated in a symposium, bringing together past participants, artists and academics to discuss models of site-specific learning.

The Artsadmin Youth Board held two events in the Arts Bar & Café – one to showcase their own practices, and another giving soon-to-be graduates a supportive space to test their work.

CELEBRATING WORK BY DISABLED ARTISTSThe Unlimited commissions programme, delivered in partnership with Shape Arts, continues to embed work by disabled artists within the UK and international cultural sectors. The latest round of commissions, including research and development awards, went to emerging and established artists, across music, literature, visual arts, combined arts, theatre and dance.

ACROSS ARTSADMIN

“It has become a powerful and positive brand that has established

an internationally recognised platform to showcase the

exceptional range of work produced by disabled artists.”

DOMINOES Station House OperaDominoes tumbled its way to Bordeaux and returned to the UK for the Milton Keynes International Festival, and then to London as part of Artichoke’s Great Fire 350 anniversary celebrations ‘London’s Burning’, where the event culimated in a fiery finale.

“This piece touched deeply on our need to connect with nature in a

simple, gentle way.”Audience member on Calling Tree

CALLING TREE Rosemary LeeCalling Tree was created for two sites in 2016: in Tottenham as part of LIFT Festival and in Camden with The Place for Bloomsbury Festival. Alongside the daily performances, school and community groups got involved through workshops, singing, poetry and performance.

THE VOICE OF NATURE Tim SpoonerThe Voice of Nature combines puppetry, magic and scientific demonstration in a performed sculpture where materials and objects are manipulated to their breaking point. This new work was presented as part of WATCH OUT festival in Cambridge and B-side Festival in Dorset.

CLARE PATEY Empathy MuseumWith EU funding through Imagine 2020, we produced Empathy Museum at NOW Gallery in Greenwich as part of LIFT Festival. The museum was housed in two converted shipping containers: A Mile in My Shoes, and A Thousand and One Books, a crowd-sourced library.

MADLOVE the vacuum cleanerAfter an extensive series of workshops and talks with over 300 people with lived experience of mental distress, the vacuum cleaner created a large scale model of a re-imagined asylum as a safe place to go ‘mad’. Madlove was shown as part of ‘Bedlam: The Asylum’ at the Wellcome Collection, London.

WORLD FACTORY METISArtsadmin toured METIS’ provocative performance game World Factory to Cambridge Junction, Brighton’s Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts and HOME Manchester. Weaving together stories of people connected to the global textile industry, the show riffs on our awareness of mass production and vulture capitalism.

“Informed by a complex tapestry of research and offering seemingly

endless possible permutations, World Factory is itself a piece of

master craftsmanship, meticulously constructed.”

Artist Development team through one-to-one advisory sessions held in

person, on the phone or by email

81artists supported through five free practical Sweatshops for artists on marketing, finance and grant applications

9artists supported by Artsadmin’s

Artist Bursary Scheme, which includes a cash award and 18 months of

mentoring and advocacy

PERFORMANCE LABSWe curated two Weekender Labs led by Lucy Cash and Vlatka Horvat. Three of the artists Vlatka met for the first time during the Weekender Lab, including an Artsadmin Youth Board member, were invited to perform in her major commission at HAU in Berlin.

In addition to these, for the first time we hosted an extended international lab and associated performance as part of the public programme led by Sonia Gomez.

BURSARY SCHEMEOur 2016 cohort of bursary artists joined us in April 2016. They are: Alicja Rogalska, FK Alexander, Larry Achiampong, Nwando Ebizie, Poppy Jackson, Richard Hards, Sam Curtis, Tim Bromage and Victoria Gray.

The Artist Development team has set up a network of organisations as ‘allies’ across the UK to increase opportunities for artists from outside London and to provide regional support.

PUBLIC PROGRAMMEToynbee Studios hosted performances by artists and companies including Catherine Hoffman, Steakhouse Live, Sonia Gomez, Gary Stevens, Jinkx Monsoon and Peaches Christ.

We joined forces with over 20 venues across London to present A Nation’s Theatre – a two-month celebration of theatre from around the UK. We invited Artsadmin Summer School lead artist and ex-bursary recipient Nic Green to perform political satire Cock and Bull, as well as Selina Thompson with her powerful installation Race Cards.

STUDIO HIREWe were delighted to welcome organisations representing a variety of artforms and businesses who operate locally and nationally. They include: Sheffield Theatres, Station House Opera, Crisis, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Our tenants, Michael Clark Company devised their new dance piece to a simple, rock ‘n’ roll... song in our Steve Whitson Studio.

We were also very happy to host some of the 1,400 performers as part of 14-18 NOW commission We’re Here Because We’re Here by Jeremy Deller.
