BiographyJoseph’s interests lie in the relationship between community advocacy, sustainability, economic development, and quality design and how they can merge to create meaningful architecture. As a student at the University of Tennessee, Joseph’s passion for community design and development was ignited while volunteering as a Lead Architectural Design Intern at the East Tennessee Community Design Center. Joseph continued to become heavily involved on campus and the local community, going on to be awarded with the Chancellor’s Gene Mitchell Gray Pioneer Award, UT’s highest award for improving cultural diversity on campus. After graduating From the University of Tennessee, Joseph went on to work as a licensed Architect at TMPartners, and has experience contributing to architectural designs for healthcare, government, and higher education facilities. He went on to represent TMPartners in various civic organizations and obtained LEED AP, Green Globes Professional, and CDT certifi cations. Joseph also volunteered with the ACE Mentor Program, AIA Emerging Professionals Committee, and the US Green Building Council.

In 2013, Joseph was one of four people in the nation recognized as an Allstate Giveback Day Hero. These individuals are recognized for their outstanding commitment to volunteering in his or her community and continuing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy of community service.

In May of 2016, Joseph completed a one-year accelerated Master of Business Administration program at University, Goizueta Business School. Joseph was awarded a full-tuition Consortium Fellowship from the Goizueta Business School, which at the time was ranked 15 out of over 177 programs by Bloomberg Businessweek. Beyond the required core curriculum for his Master in Business Administration, Joseph elected to take a wide variety of courses in Operations Strategy, Product and Brand Management, Managerial Accounting, Digital and Social Media Strategy, and Marketing Intelligence which have given him a new perspective on how to drive more value to architecture fi rms.

When Joseph is not studying or designing, you can fi nd him volunteering at his church, attending concerts with his wife, traveling, and obsessing over Tennessee Titans Football.

NASA Replacement (Offi ce) Building 4220LocationMarshall Space Flight Center - Huntsville, AL

RoleBIM Coordinator and Detailing

DescriptionThe NASA Replacement (Offi ce) Building 4220 was designed to be the fi rst of four replacement buildings in the administrative complex of the Marshall Space Flight Center. A premium placed on sustainability, LEED Silver certifi cation was achieved with the intent of later achieving a Green Globes certifi cation. Offi ce Building 4420 was designed to visually relate to the existing campus quadrangle by utilizing similar materials and building massing. The exterior of the building established the edge for the new campus quadrangle, amphitheater, and pedestrian walkway. The interior of the building provided variety of workspaces including open, collaborative spaces and formal meeting rooms that provided adequate visual and sound privacy for highly classifi ed meetings. Offi ce Building 4220’s most prominent design feature is a large atrium fl anked by cantilevered formal meeting spaces and informal work areas. The design for this building was an overwhelming success and is now being used as the template design for future NASA administrative buildings on the Marshall Space Flight Center campus.

Madison Police Precinct And Crime LaboratoryLocationNashville, TN

RoleProject Coordinator

DescriptionThe Madison Police Precinct and Crime Laboratory was a complete renovation of an existing Peterbilt Truck manufacturing facility. Madison Police Precinct and Crime Laboratory utilized a condensed design and construction plan, requiring extensive coordination between the design team, consultants, systems specialist, and contractors. Utilizing as-built BIM models generated by on-site laser scans, the existing structure was preserved and an additional second level was added within the existing structural envelope. Demolition waste was incorporated into the building design, contributing to the achievement of a LEED Silver certifi cation. Emphasis was placed on the coordination of highly secured areas, such as the forensics laboratory and evidence vault, and areas accessed by the public, such as the police precinct community room. The crime laboratory portion of the project required meticulous coordination with vendors, system engineers, and the employees of the police department. Emphasis was placed on visual transparency between the departments to ensure that evidence was not tampered with, damaged, or removed from the crime laboratory.

Grand Strand Regional Medical Center Patient Tower and Emergency Department ExpansionLocationMyrtle Beach, SC

RoleProject Coordinator

DescriptionGrand Strand Regional Medical Center Patient Tower and ED Expansion consisted of two additions on opposite ends of the existing medical campus. The patient tower served the purpose of increasing the number of patient beds while expanding the cardiovascular services that GSRMC provided. The fi rst fl oor consisted of public spaces, patient registration, outpatient cardiovascular services, cardiac catheterization, and 8 intensive care unit beds. The upper levels consisted of inpatient beds and cardiovascular surgical intensive care services. The patient tower connected to the existing facility by a 3 story connection bridge. The emergency department expansion served the purpose of increasing the volume of urgent care patients that could be served, improving fast-track services, and improving the clinical observation unit. The land locked location of the emergency department and the need to remain fully functional during construction added complexity to the phasing of construction. Utilizing BIM on this project entailed accessing how existing project fi les could be incorporated into the BIM model, determining the level of detail of drawings, researching modeling methods, completing clash detection with the contractor and consultants, and assisting in the construction administration process.

Orange Park Medical Center Emergency Department Expansion And RenovationLocationJacksonville, FL

RoleProject Coordinator

DescriptionThe Orange Park Medical Center Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation project served the purpose of updating the existing emergency department to current code requirements, increasing the emergency department’s capacity, correcting existing program ineffi ciencies, and improving visitor wayfi nding. The major challenges of this project included orchestrating construction phasing to ensure that the emergency department remained fully functional during construction and working within the limited available site area. The existing emergency department was improved with this 27 exam room expansion, by developing a design that made the patient entrance more prominent, orienting exam rooms near dedicated nurse stations, and relocating the imaging department. This Orange Park Medical Center Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation required collaboration on BIM standards with consultants, development of an information exchange schedule, and the coordination of modeling information. I was responsible for managing the internal production and coordination of drawings and documents during all phases of design.

Middle Tennessee State University Student UnionLocationMurfreesboro, TN

RoleDesign Team Member

DescriptionThe MTSU Student Union was designed to be the hub of interaction among students and faculty. The modern design set the tone for the three other buildings that would eventually complete the new campus quadrangle, while respecting the current “collegiate gothic” architecture of existing buildings. The building features include a multistory atrium designed around student collaboration, a food court that seamlessly blends exterior and interior spaces, and a shallow amphitheater. This large design project was a joint venture with another architecture fi rm with experience in the design of higher education facilities. Utilizing BIM to complete the project, modeling and documentation standards had to be continuously coordinated throughout the design and construction process with our design partner. BIM was utilized to complete energy models, shadow studies, and massing studies.
