    2015 VS. THE SOUTHERN LEA

    TODAY’S GAME: The Biloxi Shuckers host the Jackson State Tigers in the second of two tune-up games before the start of the regular season on Thursday againstthe Chattanoogga Lookouts. Today’s exhibition game marks the rst meeting between the Shuckers and a college baseball team.

    SHUCKERS’ RECAP: The Shuckers fell to their parent club, the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday at MGM Park, 7-4. The vi sit by Milwaukee marked rst time since1938 that a major league club vi sited Biloxi. Brewers’ Ryan Braun (1x2) and Domingo Santana (1x2) hit solo homers, while Biloxi’s Jacob Nottingham (2x4) andBrett Phillips (2x4) went yard for the Shuckers. The Crew erased a rst inning 1-0 defecit by scoring 5 runs over the 3rd-5th innings. Biloxi’s Nathan Orf  (2x4)collected the game’s rst RBI in the rst inning. Brewers’ starter Chase Anderson (5.0, 4, 2, 2, 1, 4) picked up the win and Biloxi’s Jorge Ortega (4.0, 5, 4, 4, 2,4) suffered the loss .The Brewers closed the preseason 15-14-2. A total of 36 players (23 for MIL) participated, including Brewers’ coach Jason Lane (1x1, HR).

    ANOTHER EXHIBITION: The Shuckers host JSU, a member of the Southwestern Athletic (SWAC East). The Tigers are 17-11 (6-3 SWAC) on the season and arecoming off of a 3-game weekend sweep of Mississippi Valley State. Preseason SWAC player of the year Jesus Santana was 3-for-4 with 2 HR, 4 R and 7 RBI intheir 19-9 win on Sunday. In 28 G, Santana is batting .284/.453/.642 and leads the SWAC in HR (9), R (35), RBI (37) and walks (26).

    WHAT’S ON TAP: The Shuckers open the regular season on Thursday, starting a 5-game series vs. Chattanooga and 7-game homestand with the Lookouts andMobile. The matchup with Chattanooga marks a rematch of last year’s SLCS in which the Lookouts took 3-2.

    SHUCKERS DOMINATE YEAR-END LEAGUE AWARDS: The Shuckers claimed two of the top awards by the Southern League in 2015. RHP Jorge Lopez wasnamed the league’s Most Outstanding Pitcher, as well as Carlos Subero being named the league’s top manager.

    SCHEDULED TO PITCH: RHP Adrian Houser , RHP Javi Salas, LHP Wei-Chung Wang and RHP Martin Viramontes are scheduled to pitch in today’s exhibitiongame vs. Jackson State.

    FAMILIAR FACES AT MGM PARK: 18 players from the 2015 Biloxi Shuckers are on the preliminary roster . Of the 18, nine were a part of the opening-day roster,which includes: RHP Jaye Chapman and Martin Viramontes, LHP Hobbs Johnson, C Parker Berberet, INFs Nathan Orf, Nick Ramirez and Nick Shaw, andOFs Tyrone Taylor and Kyle Wren.

    SHUCKERS REPRESENTED AT THE AFL: Seven members of Biloxi’s inaugural squad represented the Brewers with the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona FallLeague. RHPs Jacob Barnes, Adrian Houser and Damien Magnifco, LHP Josh Hader, INF Yadiel Rivera and OFs Brett Phillips and Michael Reed. SouthernLeague manager of the year Carlos Subero manage the Surprise club.

    MGM PARK BY THE NUMBERS: In 41 games at MGM Park in 2015, the Shuckers went 22-19 (.537) with 7 walk-off wins, 6 in extra-innings...there were 59 homeruns (1.44 per game), with19 by the Shuckers (0.46 per game). The ballpark opened on June 6, 2015 with a 14-inning walk-off victory in front of 5,065 fans.

    2015 BY THE NUMBERS: The Shuckers went 27-18 in 1-run games (.600, T-1st in SL)...14-13 in shutout games...55-15 (.786, 2nd in SL) when scoring rst...10-5(.667, 1st in SL) in extra-innings...8-6 in doubleheader games.

    STILL WAITING TO VISIT MGM PARK: Only the Birmingham Barons and Jacksonville Suns did not make a trip out to Biloxi in 2015. Birmingham makes its rst tripto MGM Park on June 6, 2016 for a ve-game series (rst of two visits), and Jacksonville heads West for the rst time on May 9.

    PITCHING DOMINANCE IN 2015: Starters, Jorge Lopez, Adrian Houser , Josh Hader , Tyler Wagner Hobbs Johnson and Brooks Hall combined for 55 qualitystarts during the inaugural season and lead the league in ERA (3.27), WHIP (1.26) and 2nd in SO (1,066).

    DIVISION DOMINANCE: The Shuckers went 50-35 (.588) against South Division opponents in 2015, and 28-24 (.538) against opponents from the North Division.

    PLAYING NL STYLE BASEBALL: The Shuckers went 54-38 (.587) against NL afliates in 2015, and 23-19 (.548) against AL afliate. Of the rst 30 games, the DHwill be used only during 5 games (Chattanooga, 4/7-4/11.

    ROSTER INCLUDES 7 OF BREWERS TOP-30 PROSPECTS (BA): The Shuckers’ roster features seven of the top-30 prospects i n the Milwaukee Brewers’ organi-zation, according to Baseball America. Of the seven, two are in the top-10: OFs Brett Phillips (4) and Tyrone Taylor  (7).     WHO ARE THE SHUCKERS?: Formerly the Huntsville Stars, the new Biloxi professional baseball team re-vealed the new identity on November 24, 2014, as the Biloxi Shuckers took center stage during a ceremonyinside Biloxi’s historic Saenger Theatre. The team name was selected after nearly 60,000 votes were castafter the month-long “Name the Team” contest yielded six finalists. A tenacious oyster is the centerpiece ofthe identity, seen both in the club’s primary logo, home and alternate caps. The letters “BS” to make up theroad cap designation - the Biloxi Lighthouse logo, resiliently rising above historic storm waters. Gulf Blue,Sand, Coral, and Black make up the club’s new official colors, paying tribute to the Gulf Coast. The Shuckersare the first professional sports team to use this color combination.ABOUT BILOXI: Founded in the late 17th century by French explorers, Biloxi has a population of 44,578and is the home of Keesler Air Force Base... With many wonderful beaches, golf courses, fishing charters,museums and the iconic Biloxi Lighthouse, Biloxi is the perfect place for friends and families to get away andtake a much-needed vacation.

    ABOUT MGM PARK: MGM Park opened its gates for the rst time on June 6, 2015 as Tyler Wagner (below) threw the rstpitch to Mobile’s Jack Reinheimer at 7:07 p,m. CT. The long wait ended and the 54-game road trip came to a close. MGMPark opened with a 5-4 win over the Mobile BayBears in 14 innings. The game lasted 4 hours, 26 minutes in front of a sold outcrowd of 5,065. Nick Shaw drove in pinch-runner Brent Suter from second to earn the walk-off win and christen the new home.• MGM Park is located off of Highway 90 and Interstate 110, adjacent to Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, MGM Park is withinwalking distance of downtown Biloxi and beaches of the Gulf Coast. The stadium, being built by the city of Biloxi, brokeground on January 24, 2014 and is being constructed by Architect Dale Partners P.A. of Biloxi and Yates Construction. MGMPark is 455,000 square feet and will seat 6,067 for baseball and up to 15,000 for concerts.     BILOXI BASEBALL HISTORY: Pro baseball is not totally new to the Gulf Coast, but it is the rst since 1908. TheGulfport-Biloxi Sand Crabs of the Cotton States League played half a season in Biloxi during the summer of 1908.Many Major League and some Minor League teams held spring traing in the area. Even the 1920 Milwaukee Brew-ers of the American Association (direct descendant of the current Brewers) trained in Gulfport. See below.
