-2 Corinthians 5:6-8 (ESV)

6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

back cover

On behalf of the 2016 Planning Committee, I would like to extend our biggest appreciation for all of you for joining our 47th annual conference. I also would like to praise God for bringing all of you safely here.2016 was not a peaceful year in the world’s perspective especially in France and in our neighborhoods (San Ber-nardino, Orlando, Dallas, Baton Rouge); a lot of killings and a lot of shootings. However, during these tough times, we have God to lead us through. Our theme this year “Walk by Faith, Not by Sight” is exactly the attitude we need in order to go through these tough situations. If we walk by sight during this year, we will have a tough time finding peace. If we walk by faith, we have peace in God and let God guide us through. Just like Job in the Old Testament, even if the situation is tough, we have to put our sight on God and not the situation itself. May God help us and lead us to a spiritual revival through this conference and may God lead us to a more peaceful 2017.

May God Bless all of you.

Joseph Chan2016 Planning Committee Chair

Message from Our Chairpersons

2016 was a blessful year for our Executive Committee. We, as God’s servants, experienced the faithfulness of the abundant Lord. Being lit up with this year’s theme “Walk by Faith, Not by Sight”, each team member felt the urgency to spread the good news. Even though we started from a low point, through praying and seeking God’s work, the team got to experience the work of FAITH.

Every one of you who is reading this note, is a blessing from God to us. My hope is that you would experience the power of Faith and meet God in this conference. May He blessed you with a memorable moment that can make you start 2017 faithfully.

In Him,

Celia Szeto 2016 Executive Committee Chair

About WCCCCWest Coast Chinese Christian Conference is an evangelical fellowship of Chinese Christians committed to challenging and equipping God’s people to serve on campuses or in the workplace, at the local church or on the mission field. Through a network of resources, training and encourage-ment, WCCCC aims to serve the West Coast Chinese Chris-tian community.

Our History WCCCC began in 1969 when a group of foreign-born Chinese Christian students gathered for fellowship over the Christmas break. This winter retreat continued up through 1971. In 1972, the winter retreat planning committee placed their efforts in the planning of the North American Congress of Chinese Evangelicals (NACOCE). After the NACOCE meet-ing, this winter retreat began its transformation into a full-fledged “Winter Conference”. From this beginning, WCCCC has grown into a regional conference ministering to students and young adults, both foreign and American born, from over 100 different groups and churches.

Our Vision WCCCC’s vision is to co-work with West Coast Chinese churches to bring about a grass roots revival.

Our Mission The primary mission of WCCCC is to plan, organize, and deliver an an-nual conference for West Coast Chinese Christians that will: • Stimulate conferees to grow in their walk with God; • Equip conferees with the knowledge and skills to fulfill their spiritual

calling; • Enrich conferees with a knowledge and understanding of current

and past events and movements relevant to Chinese Christians; • Promote conferees’ awareness of their social responsibilities.

9

Our Distinctiveness A Community Within Diversity Conferees come from throughout the West Coast representing diverse backgrounds.Through group Bible studies, cabin sharing and other activities, fellowship is fostered to promote a genuine community.

A Wealth of Perspectives Conferees are challenged and stimulated through interaction with our numerous speakers on a broad range of topics regarding spiritual growth, Christian service and contemporary issues.

An Opportunity for Training Conferees are offered practical workshops to build leadership and evangelism skills, as well as in-conference opportunities to lead Bible study and to practice spiritual discipline. Committee members develop important strategic and tactical skills that provide a valuable foundation for future ministries.

Our Beliefs Although we come from various church denominations, the leadership of West Coast Chinese Christian Conference holds to the following state-ments of faith: • We believe that the Bible is uniquely inspired by God, and in its

trustworthiness and authority. • We believe in the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ and in His true hu-

manity when He lived among us. • We acknowledge the necessity of Jesus’ substitutionary death on

the cross for the redemption of the world. • We hold that salvation is by faith and through God’s grace alone. • We believe in the historic fact of the resurrection. • We acknowledge the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the

work of regeneration. • We fully expect the personal return of Jesus Christ in the future.

Evening Message 1

DAY 1

15

16

Morning Devotion 1 DAY 2

Psalm 57:7-11 ESV

7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast!

I will sing and make melody!

8 Awake, my glory!Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn!

9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations.

10 For your steadfast love is great to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.

11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!

Praise the Lord for giving us a time of devotion. You may be bringing in your worries, frustrations, sorrows, and other burdens with you to this conference. You may still not have the answer(s) to your problem(s). You may not know how to deal with them yet. Use a few minutes to meditate on the Psalm you just read, write down all your feelings, thoughts, things that are troubling you, and lay them all out before God.

17

2 Corinthians 4:8-18 ESV8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; per-plexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always car-rying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.12 So death is at work in us, but life in you.13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak,14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Je-sus and bring us with you into his presence. 15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

1. What is Paul’s situation in this passage?2. How did Paul overcome his afflictions, difficulties, persecutions,

and rejections?3. What is Paul’s main concern? Or what is Paul trying to tell us?4. Why are you troubled and/or upset? Is it for “the things that are

seen”? or for “the things that are unseen”?

18

19

Morning Devotion 1 DAY 2

Penny for Your Thoughts

Penny for your Thoughts seeks to explore the subject question from the perspectives of a layman citizen. Our goals will be mod-est: clarify working definitions so that intelligent dialogs can ensue afterwards, and perhaps along the way we shall discover together some generational differences. We expect to at least touch on the

following five questions:

• Differentiating between ‘righteousness,’ ‘justice’ and ‘fairness.’ How is justice rendered in real life?

• What are the areas of Christian social responsibili-ty?

• How are Biblical principles of Christian living re-duced to practice in the social context?

• What is patriotism? What is ‘Christian’ patriotism?• What are the essential pillars of a well-functioning

democracy?

Psalm 5:2-3 ESV

2 Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray.

3 O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you[a] and

watch.

The King whom we cannot see is listening to our prayers. Let us pour out our feelings to God every morning. Let us invite the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts. Take a few minutes to meditate and write down your prayer. Ask God to open our eyes so that we can see through the eyes of God.

2 Corinthians 5:1-5 ESV1For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.2 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwell-ing, 3 if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what

is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given

us the Spirit as a guarantee.

1. If our earthly home is destroyed, then where is the home from God? (Matthew 26:61 & John 2:19)

2. Where are we now? Hoping for what?3. What did Paul still live in his earthly body if he’s

groaning and sighing?4. What is Paul’s goal?5. What is our goal in life? Is it for the clothed or un-

clothed? Is it for us or for God?

因為我向你禱告。耶和華啊!求你在清晨聽我的聲音;

Christian Fellowship Forum

The Chinese Christian Fellowship (CCF) at UC Berkeley initiated a winter retreat in 1969. With a grand vision of a Christian student movement, many West Coast CCFs joined this noble course, and the W4C was born. For the past 48 years, the W4C has been equipping leaders by training, challenging, and broadening Scriptural perspectives for stu-dents and young adults. In the present, many W4C alumni are interest-ed in supporting and learning about how Christian fellowships around the country are doing. We have gathered several fellowship leaders and representatives from around N. America to share their perspectives and challenges and invite you into this meeting. We plan to establish a plat-form for a national and global network to further a movement of studying and applying God’s Word. Please reserve a seat for yourself and invite your fellowship leaders to join us in sharing your insights. We would love to have an open forum to learn how to continue this movement not only on campus and at church, but also with our families and relatives, neighborhoods and workplaces, in order to reach every part of the world with His Word!

Dr. Tony C. Chan is the facilitator for this event. He graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 1984 and continued to study at UC Irvine and the University of Southern California, obtaining an MBA, MSQA, and DRSc. Heavily involved in Quality and Risk Management, he served as the co-founder and president of the Society of Reliability Engineers of Orange County and the Temecula section of the American Society for Quality. From 2001 to 2010, he represented the United States as one of two co-chairs for the International Organization for Standardization on the Application of Risk Management to Medical Devices (ISO/IEC TC 210 JWG1)

In terms of spiritual service, Dr. Chan has been involved in student ministry ever since he was a student himself at Cal Poly Pomona. He was CCF President at Cal Poly Pomona from 1982 to 1984, and was president and officer of the Adult Fellowship at FCBC LA from 1986 to 1988. Dr. Chan has continuously been involved in the W4C, serving as a planning committee and executive committee member in 1985-1989, and has been the W4C Alumni Association’s executive director from 2010 to the present. Most recently, he has been involved in CBCCP’s student ministry from 2015 to the present.

Psalm 9:1-2 ESV

1 I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

2 I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

The wonderful works of the Lord is shown greatly on us. We should rejoice because of His faithfulness, mercy, and compassion. During these three days, perhaps your burdens have been taken off or perhaps God has given you comfort. Take a few minutes and think through what you’ve gained/let go. Write down your experiences with God during these past three days.

52

2 Corinthians 5:6-11 ESV

6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we

are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for

what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.11

Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it

is known also to your conscience.

Our aim is to please God (v. 8). We should look for things that are unseen instead of looking for things that are seen. What would you do to please God?

BEHIND THE SCENESEvery year, amazing volunteers work together to bring you WCCCC. This year, 11 Planning Committee (PC) members worked very hard throughout the year to prepare this winter conference. It is a challenging commitment, but there are many reasons for brothers and sisters to join the team year after year.

The Planning Committee consists of 12 members (6 students and 6 young adults) who take up the responsibilities for planning and directing future conferences. Those elected will serve for 25 months.

At each December conference, 6 members are elected to replace the 6 outgoing members: 3 to be elected from and by the student conferees, 3 to be elected from and by the young adult conferees. It is custom-ary for PC members to continue serving in the execution phase to put together the conference that they planned.

71

Evening Speaker

Rev. He remembers that as a small child, his father would take him and his younger brother to visit their grandparents every Sunday morning. They would pass a church with a huge sign reading “Christ died for our sins.” Even then he often wondered what that meant. Later, while a student at Rutgers University, he read the Gospels for himself and was deeply moved by the purity and holiness of Christ and by His promise, “…and lo, I will be with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Believing the Bible’s declaration that it was his sin that separated him from the holy and eternal God, and that it was Christ who paid the price for his sin by His death on the cross, he came to Christ as his Savior and Lord in 1974. Pastor Herring came to know many Chinese friends at Rutgers and took his first Chinese course as an elective in fall of 1972. His great interest led him to continue in Chi-nese studies. After coming to Christ, he was introduced to and became involved with the Chinese Student Bible Study Group on the Rutgers Campus. Upon the conviction of the Lord’s call into full-time ministry, in 1982 he entered China Evangelical Seminary in Taipei, Taiwan as the only American student in a school of over 100 Chinese students. After receiving a Master of Di-vinity degree in 1985, he served for over a year in a church in Hong Kong, and then returned to the United States where he served in Chinese churches in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Rochester. In Chicago, he earned a Master of Theology Degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has also served as a 9th grade Earth Science teacher in a Christian School as well as in full-time Christian radio ministry in the New York City area. During the summer of 2006 Pastor Her-ring returned to Rochester with his family to rejoin the minis-try of Rochester Chinese Christian Church. He is married to Lily Hsu from Taipei, Taiwan, and they have one son, Daniel.
