1Temple University Football 2016 Spring Prospectus

Unfinished business.

That’s the mindset of the 2016 Temple Owls.

The goals were clearly stated in 2015 byfourth year head coach Matt Rhule. Contendfor a conference championship, play in abowl game, and finished the season as aranked team.

While those goals were achieved, the expec-tations have changed. Temple tied a schoolrecord with 10 wins and had a couple ofchances to add to that. No longer will it beacceptable to play in the postseason. Templefootball now expects not only to compete in,but to win a bowl game and a conferencechampionship.

In the past, many viewed Temple as a step-ping stone for head coaches – once they hadsuccess on North Broad Street, it was as-sumed they would leave for greener pas-tures. Rhule was faced with that opportunitylast offseason being pursued by otherschools with head coaching vacancies. How-ever, his love for Temple and the city ofPhiladelphia, and the reciprocated respectand commitment between he and the Univer-sity’s administration, kept the coaching staffpretty well intact. That stability has neverbeen more important.

First, the program needs to identify its newon-field leadership. Gone are three-timecaptains Tyler Matakevich and Kyle Friend, and two-time captain Matt Ioannidis. The de-fense is losing at least three players who ap-pear headed to the NFL – Matakevich,Ioannidis and Tavon Young.

While the loss of such a very talented seniorclass is difficult, they left a legacy of hard

work and brotherhood that the remainingplayers have the opportunity to build upon.

This group of three-time letter winners – QBP.J. Walker, LB Jarred Alwan, OL DionDawkins, WR Romond Deloatch, DL AveryEllis, DL Sharif Finch, LB Stephaun Marshall,OL Brendan McGowan, DL Haason Reddick,DL Averee Robinson – and all-conferenceperformers – CB Sean Chandler and RB JahadThomas – will be expected to lead Temple toits best season ever, including back-to-backbowl game appearances for the first time inschool history.

The talent level continues to improve withbigger, stronger, faster players being re-cruited and developed. Last year, 15 of 18 re-cruits redshirted and learned football fromthe coaching staff while being trained underthe watchful eye of Jeremy Scott and hisstrength and conditioning staff.

Temple has four non-conference games tokickoff the season before beginning defenseof its American Athletic Conference East Di-vision crown. Temple will have to get used toplaying with a target on its back as 10 of the12 opponents have lost to the Owls in theirmost recent meeting. Of the 2016 oppo-nents, only USF looks to extend a winningstreak against the Owls (Temple will faceStony Brook for the first time).

Eleven is an important number for the Owlsthis year. P.J. Walker, who wears #11, willcontinue re-writing the school’s record book.He already has the career marks in pass com-pletions and touchdowns, and is well withinreach of the record for passing yards. Butthe most important #11 for the Owls this sea-son will be the elusive 11th win.

Not entirely unlike the nation that provides its namesake, the Amer-ican Athletic Conference was born from an ideal in which memberswith ambitious goals are provided with the means to succeed in theirquests for excellence.

With roots that extend to three conferences, the American AthleticConference football membership in 2016-17 once again consists of12 institutions: the University of Central Florida, the University ofCincinnati, East Carolina University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, the U.S. NavalAcademy, the University of South Florida, Southern Methodist Uni-versity, Temple University, Tulane University and the University ofTulsa.

Under the leadership of commissioner Mike Aresco, The American, which operated as the Big East Conference from 1979 to 2013, hasimmediately taken a place at the forefront of Division I athletics, with

schools that have played in five Bowl Championship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basketball titles since 1999, and won 10 NCAAwomen’s basketball championships since 1995.

On December 17, 2012, Matt Rhule (pronounced RULE) re-turned to North Broad Street to take the helm as headcoach of the Temple Owls. Following six seasons as oneof Al Golden’s top assistants, he joined the New York Gi-ants as the assistant offensive line coach in 2012. He isnow in his fourth year as the 26th Owls head coach andtenth on the Temple campus.

Prior to the start of his first season in charge, he offeredthat his squad would produce an exciting brand of foot-ball and they would improve as the season progressed.Rhule delivered on those promises as the 2013 Owls pro-duced nearly 400 yards per game of offense (the secondbest total in school history). Despite an 0-6 start to theseason, the troops never surrendered and the teamnever trailed at the start of the fourth quarter in thesecond half of the season. The mission in the 2014

offseason was to learn how to finish out games.

They did just that, allowing only 234th quarter points in all of 2014.

That adjustment, andthe overall

i m p r o v e dplay of the de-fense, helpedthe Owls to a 6-6record.

On June 25, 2015, Rhule wasrewarded with a four-year con-tract extension that will keep him on the Templesidelines through the 2021 season. Temple’s Di-rector of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft announced,“Matt Rhule is one of the best young coaches incollege football and we are excited that he will beat the helm of Temple Football through at least2021. Matt has the program heading in the right di-rection, especially as we enter a very promising sea-son on the gridiron, and we are confident that he isthe right person to take the program to even greaterheights."

And take the program to greater heights he did. In2015, Rhule has led his team to a 10-win regularseason and a American Athletic East division tro-phy. For the first time in 73 years, the Owls beatPenn State, started the season a program-best 7-0, and were ranked in the Top 25 for the first timein 36 seasons. Ten of his players earned all-confer-ence honors and senior linebacker Tyler Matakevichwon the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards, while alsobeing named a finalist for the Lott IMPACT and SeniorCLASS Awards.

The year ended with Rhule winning CBS PhillySportsperson of the year and Coach of the Year fromboth the ECAC and Maxwell Football Club.

That success prompted another commitment from TempleUniversity following the season. Said University PresidentDr. Neil Theobald, “Matt's commitment to our student-athletes on and off the field, as well as the program's sub-stantial improvement each season, has more thanjustified my confidence in him. He works tirelessly for thebetterment of our players, our football program, and ouruniversity."

Added Kraft, “Matt is one of the top coaches in collegefootball and has been responsible for making Tem-ple a national program. He is an even better personoff the field; a true leader who instills character and

values in the men under his charge.”

The State College, PA, native and a formerplayer at Penn State, has 17 years of colle-giate coaching experience, including eightseasons at Temple, and six bowl games --

two with the Owls -- on his resume.

Rhule joined the Giants in thespring of 2012. He worked

closely with Pat Flaherty, who has been the of-

fensive line coachsince 2004. They

finished the 2012campaign at 9-7,

second in theNFC East,

During his previ-ous tenure at Temple,

Rhule’s role changedseveral times. In spring 2012,

he was promoted to co-offensive co-ordinator after serving as the assis-

tant offensive coordinator andtight ends coach as well as

the recruiting coordinatorunder Steve Addazio in

2011. Temple’s 2012recruiting class wasranked #1 in the Mid-

American Conferenceand helped lay the

foundation for the pro-gram's transition to theBig East Conference.

When Rhule gets on a roll he’s mesmer-izing. The fact that he’s got actual NFL coachingexperience doesn't hurt, either.

The unit will be headed once again by Glenn Thomas, whocame to the Owls after a successful seven-year run with theAtlanta Falcons. This season, he adds the responsibility of of-fensive coordinator after the departure of Marcus Satterfieldto become head coach at Tennessee Tech.

Thomas is credited with the continued development of seniorQB P.J. Walker. The junior burst on the scene with 20 touch-downs and over 2,000 passing yards in just seven starts as atrue freshman in 2013 before leveling off in 2014. UnderThomas’ guidance, he continued to mature into a certifiedfield general. He has already set the Temple career marks forcompletions (601), touchdowns (52), and wins by a startingquarterback (18), and is within striking distance of currentleader Henry Burris in attempts (1,136 / 1,064) and passingyards (7,495 / 7,374).

Last season’s #2 quarterback was redshirt-sophomore FrankNutile. After spending his freshman year recovering from atorn ACL, he appeared in four games in limited mop-up duty.He was 3-for-3 for 40 yards and a touchdown in the homecom-ing win against Tulane.

Logan Marchi spent his freshman year redshirting.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the addition of Anthony Russo(Philadelphia/Archbishop Wood). Zach Carroll (Hatboro, Pa. /Father Judge) joined the team as a walk-on this spring.

Leading the running backs this season will be Chris Wiesehan, who coached Temple’s offensive line for the previous two sea-sons.

Jahad Thomas, a first-team all-conference player a year ago, returns for his senior season. In 2015, he scored at least onerushing touchdown in the first ten games and finished theyear with 19 scores and 1,262 rushing yards. Along the way,he topped the century mark five times, including a career-high199 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries against UCF.The former defensive back is the established starter butshould get help carrying the load from a talented group ofyoung runners.

Last season, two true freshmen had limited opportunities torun the ball but showed they had what it takes to succeed.Ryquell Armstead emerged from the start of camp to earn arole spotting Thomas. He averaged five carries for 20 yards inthe first five games, but was hampered by an injury for most

of the remainder of the season. He finished with 166 yardsand two scores on 43 carries. Jager Gardner was given the re-sponsibility of kickoff returner by game seven and eventuallyearned snaps on offense. Nearly all of his 32 carries for theseason were collected in the season’s final four games. He setthe school record with a 94-yard run from scrimmage at SMU,scoring his lone touchdown of the year on his way to his firstcareer 100-yard game.

After redshirting in 2014, David Hood became a trusted partof the offense last year. By midseason, he was inserted intothe third down packages and was the leading ball carrier (14-61-1TD) when Temple defeated #21 Memphis.

Redshirt freshman Mike Gillespie will add depth, after servingthe 2015 season on the scout team.

Frisman Jackson will coach the wide receivers for the secondstraight year. He is the first to hold that position for two con-secutive seasons since 2007-09 (Kevin Gilbrdie Jr.).

Gone from a year ago are three of the top four receivers: RobbyAnderson (70-939-7TDs), John Christopher (20-208), andBrandon Shippen (20-288-1). All three were seniors.

Redshirt sophomore Ventell Bryant (39-579-3TDs), an emerg-ing star, returns. Last season, Bryant shattered the freshmanrecord in receptions (22 - Sean Szarka, 2012) and receivingyards (378 – Carlos Johnson, 1998). He has caught at leastone pass in every game he has played.

Redshirt senior Romond Deloatch continues to improve as areceiver, evident by his performance down the stretch in 2015.While he ended the year with 20 receptions for 155 yards andthree scores, 13 of those catches came in the final four games.

Adonis Jennings transferred to Temple in 2015 after his fresh-man campaign at Pitt. The Sicklerville, N.J. native and TimberCreek product enjoyed his return home and contributed with14 catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Two receivers who redshirted last season are expected tomake big contributions in 2016. Redshirt sophomore BrodrickYancy was proving to be a tough slot receiver and valiantlyfought to return from an injury in game two, but was forced tothe sidelines for the remainder of the season. Redshirt juniorKeith Kirkwood, who transferred from Hawaii in 2014, hasshown flashes of brilliance but needs to be more consistent.

The Owls are expecting redshirt freshman Cortelle Simpsonto make an impact as a receiver and as a return specialist.Simpson impressed the coaches last season while on thescout team – he was the only player to be named scout teamplayer of the week multiple times.

Redshirt sophomore Marshall Ellick continues to improve. Heplayed in five games a year ago, mostly on special teams.

Redshirt sophomores John Ruza and Willie Smith, along withredshirt freshman Travon Williams, are all former walk-onswho add depth.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the additions of Freddie John-son [North Fort Myers (Fla.) High], Randle Jones [North MiamiBeach (Fla.) High], and Isaiah Wright (West Hartford, Conn. /Kingswood-Oxford). Aaron Bailey (Scottsdale, Pa. / South-moreland) was added as a walk-on this spring.

The offensive line is under new leadership both on and off thefield. George DeLeone, a 46-year coaching veteran, returnsfor his tour of duty coaching Temple’s offensive line. He wasthe teams’ offensive coordinator in 2006-07 and tutored theoffensive line in 2007. On the field, the unit will be withoutthe leadership of center Kyle Friend, who graduated. Friend,a three-time captain, was the cornerstone of the offensive linefor the past three seasons.

Inheriting the baton will be senior left tackle Dion Dawkins.Dawkins has started 26 games over the past three seasonsand earned fourth team All-America honors from Phil Steelefollowing the 2015 campaign.

Temple has three other linemen with starting experience froma year ago. Redshirt senior Brendan McGowan has started 17games over the past three seasons. He started four games atcenter for Friend in 2015 and was the starting guard for mostof the 2014 season. Brian Carter clocked ten games at rightguard last season and continues to improve. The redshirt jun-ior is in just his second full season on the O-line after convert-ing from a defensive tackle in 2013. Redshirt junior LeonJohnson started seven games at tackle last year and playedin 12 as the Owls employed a six-man group.

In the past few seasons under head coach Matt Rhule, Templehas looked to develop offensive linemen in one of two ways –convert from defense to offense or recruit-redshirt-develop.Falling in the first category and following the successes ofCarter and Shahbaz Ahmed are redshirt juniors Kiser Terry andJordan Jones. Terry earned two letters in 2013-14 as a contrib-utor on the defensive line. He moved to the offensive side ofthe ball last year and spent the season redshirting. Jonescame to Temple as an offensive lineman and moved to defense

last season before returning to offense again for 2016.

Redshirt juniors Samaj Reed and Adrian Sullivan, redshirtsophomores James McHale and Aaron Ruff, and redshirt fresh-men Jovahn Fair and Benson Israel have all been recruited toplay offensive line for Temple. With the graduation of Friend,Ahmed and Eric Lofton, the opportunity is there for them toget on the field.

Three walk-ons continue to develop. Nick Apostolu and Gor-don Thomas were added in 2014 and Joseph Woerner in 2015.Thomas saw action in three games last season.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the additions of Darian Bryant(Philadelphia, Pa. / Chestnut Hill Academy) and Matt Hen-nessy (Bardonia, N.Y. / Don Bosco Prep). Dan Drewes [Dun-more (Pa.) High] was added as a walk-on this spring.

Ed Foley begins his fourth season as Temple’s tight endscoach and his second as the special teams coordinator.

Redshirt senior Colin Thompson is finally fully recovered fromfoot injuries that hampered him at Florida and brought theDoylestown, Pa., native back home. Entering his third andfinal season for Temple, Thompson has been a major force inthe improved run game and has made contributions in thepassing attack.

Redshirt sophomore Kip Patton provided a spark and big-playability. He finished the season with 12 catches for 168 yardswith half of those catches converting first downs. He alsoscored two touchdowns on run plays, including the Owls onlytouchdown in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Alex Carling and Chris Myarick are both redshirt sophomoresand former walk-ons. Each has seen limited action, mostly onspecial teams.

The 2015 recruiting class brought in Jake Robinson who spentthe season redshirting. Joining the squad as walk-ons lastyear were Dominic Nigrelli and Baily Raymond.

Added to the mix is redshirt sophomore transfer Hez Trahan.A Philadelphia native, Trahan redshirted at Pitt in 2014 aftera stellar career at Roman Catholic. He sat out in 2015 beforeenrolling at Temple.

The fullback position is manned by two converted linebackerswho each walked on to the squad in 2014. Redshirt junior NickSharga was the only Temple player to see action on both sides ofthe ball in 2015. He earned the respect of his peers, being givena single-digit jersey (#4) for his toughness. Redshirt freshmanRob Ritrovato was converted to fullback after contributing on spe-cial teams as a true freshman in 2014. He suffered an injury in theseason opener and was forced to redshirt.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the additions of Branden Mack(Wyncote, Pa. / Cheltenham), Steve Petrick (North Hunting-don, Pa. / Norwin), Taiyir Wilson (Schwenksville, Pa. /Perkiomen Valley / Fork Union), and Kenny Yeboah (Allentown,Pa. / Parkland Senior).

For the first time since the departure of Broncos Super Bowl50 winner Brandon McManus, Temple has a kicker worthy of

consideration for the Lou Groza Award. Junior Austin Jones setthe school record last season in field goals made (23) andpoints by a kicker (113). In fact, he had the same number offield goals and FG percentage as Memphis’ Jake Elliott, whowas the unanimous all-conference selection.

Jones benefits from a steady combination of long snapperCorey Lerch and holder Tom Bradway. Lerch has held downthat spot since joining the team as a walk-on in 2014. Bradwayredshirted in 2014.

A third specialist who earned a spot as a walk-on in 2014 ispunter Alex Starzyk. The strong-legged junior improved hispunting average by four yards from 2014 with a 42.4-yard av-erage in 2015.

Redshirt junior LS Josh Lang and redshirt freshman K JakeGeiger continue to push the incumbents.

A.J. Lenkaitis (Exeter, Pa. / Wyoming Area) and Dan McDonald(Warrington, Pa. / Archbishop Wood) were added as walk-onsthis spring.

Once again, Elijah Robinson leads the “Wildboyz,” the nick-name for Temple’s defensive line. Despite the losses of MattIoannidis, Hershey Walton and Nate D. Smith, the defensiveline remains deep and talented.

The end position has three players who each spent at leastone season as a starter. Redshirt senior Haason Reddickstarted opposite Smith last season and was the unit’s mostproductive player. He registered career highs in tackles (45),TFLs (12.5) and sacks (5.0) en route to all-conference honors.Praise Martin-Oguike, also a redshirt senior, emerged as aplaymaker in 2014. In the past two years he has 67 tackles,19.0 TFLs, and a team-leading 11.5 sacks and eight forced fum-bles. Senior Sharif Finch has been hampered by knee injuries, but has played through them to contribute 78 tackles, 4.5TFLs, 5.0 sacks, and 2 interceptions over the past three sea-sons.

Joining them on the outside are redshirt senior Avery Ellis andjunior Jacob Martin. Both have played in 25 games over thepast two seasons and have provided quality snaps on defensewhile being core special teams players.

The anchor on the inside is expected to be senior AvereeRobinson. Robinson shared the starting spot with Walton lastseason and finished with career-highs in tackles and TFLs.

Redshirt sophomore Michael Dogbe and redshirt junior JulianTaylor provide some experience. Dogbe had three tackles inthe bowl game against Toldeo and flashed brilliance at timesthroughout the season. Taylor was impressive in camp butsuffered an injury in the opener last year and missed the re-mainder of the season.

The Owls redshirted five defensive linemen last season. Threerecruits - Josiah Bronson, DeAndre Kelly, and Dana Levine -and walk-ons Prosper Mekoba and Jeromy Reichner, spent theyear getting bigger and stronger under the eye of the strengthand conditioning coaches. Bronson was hurt early in campand is still recovering from season-ending surgery.

Making the transition to defense this season will be a pair oftight ends: redshirt junior Cole Boozer and redshirt freshmanRoy Pugh.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the additions of Dan Archibong[Springfield (Pa.) High], Karamo Dioubate (Philadelphia / PrepCharter), Quincy Roche (Randallstown, Md. / New Town), ChrisTucker (Jackson, Tenn. / Trinity Christian Academy), and GregWebb [Sicklerville, N.J. / Timber Creek / Hutchinson (Kan.) At the linebacker position, Mike Siravo will be responsible forfinding a replacement for Temple’s all-time leading tacklerTyler Matakevich. The starters all have experience, but thedepth is still unproven.

Manning the middle is senior Jarred Alwan. He served as aspot starter as an underclassman but secured the startingMLB role last season. Alwan responded with 74 tackles (sec-ond only to Matakevich), including 7.0 TFLs, and a career-high1.5 sacks. He also ranked among the conference leaders with4 forced fumbles.

Redshirt seniors Stephaun Marshall (14 starts) and AveryWilliams (12 starts) shared the WLB duties for the past twoseasons. Marshall is coming off a career high in tackles, in-terceptions and forced fumbles. Williams had his best seasonas a tackler and added his first career interception in 2015.

Redshirt junior Nick Sharga had a chance to spell Alwan in themiddle on occasion in 2015. He continues to improve and isexpected to have an added role this season.

Over the past two seasons, the Owls have recruited a fewplayers who have redshirted while learning their craft andbuilding their strength. Jared Folks (2014 recruit) andDaishaun Grimes, Chapelle Russell and Williams Updegrove(2015 class) are primed to make significant contributions in2016.

Todd Jones and Chris Smith are talented walk-ons who haveearned playing time on special teams. Zack Mesday walkedon in 2014 and has spent the better part of the past two sea-sons rehabbing an injury. Kevin DeCaesar and MikeDiFrancesco joined the team as walk-ons in 2015 and continueto develop.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the additions of Shaun Bradley(Mt. Holly, N.J. / Rancocas Valley), Sam Franklin (Crystal River,Fla. / Citrus / East Coast Prep), Isaiah Graham-Mobley (Kingof Prussia, Pa. / Upper Merion), and William Kwenkeu (Wal-dorf, Md. / St. Charles).

Fran Brown will once again tutor the defensive backs. Like theother levels of the defense, Brown is tasked with replacing aplayer (Tavon Young) headed to the NFL.

Junior Sean Chandler has started virtually every game of hiscollege career. Last season, he led all Owl defensive backswith 65 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, 1.0 sacks, a team-high four intercep-tions and 10 pass break ups. Chandler returned two intercep-tions for touchdowns and finished the year as a second teamAll-American Athletic Conference choice.

Redshirt senior Nate Hairston and redshirt junior Artrel Fostergave the Owls valuable snaps in the secondary last season, whether spotting Young (who nursed an injury) or addingnickel coverage. Hairston was in just his first full season ondefense after being converted from wide receiver. Both areamong Temple’s best special teams performers.

The Owls are expecting big things from Kareem Ali. A four-starrecruit, Ali redshirted in 2015.

Junior Cequan Jefferson is a talented athlete who has con-tributed on special teams while improving in the secondary.

Redshirt sophomore Derrek Thomas is making the conversionfrom wide receiver.

Jarrid Satterfield and David Sweetman were added as walk-ons in 2014, while Eriq Fadahunsi joined the squad in 2015.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the additions of Kimere Brown[Penns Grove (N.J.) High], Linwood Crump (South Amboy, N.J./ Piscataway / Sayerville), and Kareem Gaulden (Jersey City,N.J. / Lincoln).

Leading the safeties is defensive coordinator Phil Snow, a 40-year coaching veteran.

One returner with starting experience is redshirt senior NateL. Smith. Smith has seen action in each of the past two sea-sons, but was pressed into a starting role in 2015 and did notdisappoint. In seven starts, he contributed 54 tackles (fourthon the team) and his first career interception.

Delvon Randall was the only true freshman to earn playingtime on defense. He played in all 14 games on defense andspecial teams.

Redshirt sophomore Jyquis Thomas was among the Owls topspecial teams players last season and will be given an oppor-tunity to play in the secondary in 2016.

Redshirt senior Khiry Lucas was hurt during the 2014 seasonand spent 2015 rehabilitating. He earned his degree but hasa year of eligibility remaining.

Jeremiah Atoki and Kyle Baum both spent the 2015 seasonredshirting. Atoki came to Temple as part of the 2015 recruit-ing class and Baum joined as a walk-on.

The 2016 recruiting class sees the additions of Keyvone Bru-ton (Norfolk, Va. / Lake Taylor), Amir Tyler [Lakewood (N.J.)High], and Benny Walls (Cinnaminson, N.J. / St. Joe’s Prep).

26Temple University Football 2016 Spring Prospectus

The 2015 season was a historic success for the Temple football pro-gram. Starting with a defining win against an in-state foe and endingwith a school record-tying 10 wins, the Owls generated national at-tention and set attendance records.

Coming off a 6-6 season in 2014 but not earning a bowl bid, Templebegan the year fueled by the motto “leave no doubt.” Fortunately itacted not just as a slogan but an attitude, enforced by a talented andhungry group of seniors. Headlining that group: captains TylerMatakevich, Kyle Friend, Matt Ioannidis and Tavon Young. Also in-cluded were Shahbaz Ahmed, Eric Lofton, John Christopher, RobbyAnderson, Brandon Shippen, Saledeem Major, Hershey Walton, NateD. Smith, Alex Wells, and Will Hayes. Each led individually withintheir respective units and collectively with a common objective.

The goals were clearly defined by head coach Matt Rhule. He wanted Temple to compete for the American AthleticConference Championship, play in a bowl game, and beranked in the Top 25 at the end of the season. All seemedlike lofty goals in the spring, but by season’s end and withall three accomplished, there was also disappointment.

Along the way, the most important thing was achieved –a culture shift for Temple football. Observers now wanted, and expected, more.

One of the first steps was beating in-state rival Penn Stateon opening day. In front of a sold out Lincoln FinancialField crowd of 69,176, the Nittany Lions, who held theupper hand in this matchup for the past 74 years and 39contests, got off to an early 10-0 lead. The Owls stormed back andpasted Penn State to the tune of 27-10. People took notice. A Power5 team was beaten. Temple received Top 25 votes following thatgame and every week thereafter.

More important to the growth of this team was the following week’smatchup. In Cincinnati against the preseason favorite to win theAmerican Athletic Conference, Temple built a 22-point lead and de-feated the Bearcats 34-26. RB Jahad Thomas, who eventually earnedfirst team all-conference honors, flashed his big play ability, scoringtwice in the span of 1:34 to open the second half. A school recordtying 100-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff and a 56-yard run on the Owls next possession took the wind out of theBearcats’ sellout crowd.

A school record 7-0 start propelled the Owls to their highest rankingof the season, #21, and a showdown against #9 Notre Dame. Anothersellout crowd was expected at Lincoln Financial Field, but once again,Temple exceeded expectations. ESPN brought its nationally ac-claimed College Gameday Show to Philadelphia while ABC sched-uled this matchup of two Top 25 teams into the national primetimeslot.

The spotlight shined bright on Temple and an upset was in the mak-ing. The Owls stood toe-to-toe with the Fighting Irish and held a slimlead, 20-17, with under 3:00 to go. A late Notre Dame touchdown mayhave handled Temple its first loss, but the falter wouldn’t taint whatthe Owls had accomplished in the season’s first half.

After a school record four weeks in the Top 25, Temple fell out brieflybefore back-to-back wins at the end of the regular seasonagainst #21 Memphis (31-12) and UConn (27-3) catapultedthem back. Those wins, in which the Owls defense did notallow a touchdown, brought Temple to a school record-tying10 victories. It also left the Owls with a 7-1 conference recordand the American Athletic Conference East Crown, not tomention a trip south to face Houston for the league title.

Losses in the American Athletic Conference ChampionshipGame (24-13 at Houston) and in a rain-soaked Marmot BocaRaton Bowl (32-17 vs. Toledo) could not dampen the accom-plishments of the 2015 Temple Owls.

Both the ECAC and the Philadelphia Sportswriters Associa-tion selected the Temple Owls as their 2015 Team of the Year,

and Matt Rhule was recognized as coach of the year (ECAC, MaxwellTri-State). A conference-high ten players earned all-conference hon-ors, including seven first-team selections. Tyler Matakevich becamethe most celebrated football player in school history. The senior line-backer earned national defensive player of the year (Chuck BednarikAward and Bronko Nagurski Trophy), was a consensus All-Americaselection (and Temple’s first defensive first-team All-America), andAmerican Athletic Conference defensive player of the year.

Most important, the Owls had 25 players dress for the bowl gamehaving already earned a degree. Among the 76 bowl participants, just one school, national champion Alabama, had more.
