1.1. GENERAL INFORMATION
The eyes of the world are on Qatar right now. In just forty
years, this small Gulf state has been catapulted from one of
the poorest countries in the region, to the richest (per capita)
in the world. Vast natural gas and oil resources have brought
vast wealth to the Qatari population, and the country is
developing at breakneck speed, with everything from
universities to shopping malls, five-star hotels and football
stadium – in preparation for the 2022 World Cup – are
springing up among the desert scenery.
In fact Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming
the first Arab country to do so.
Qatar is pretty much a city-state at present; 50% of the
country’s population live in and around the capital and most
other towns are Qatari Oil compounds; strange, quasi-com-
munities built for foreign workers. There are stretches of
beautiful beach on the western coast, in places like Dukhan,
and in the south of the country the spectacular dunes of
Khor al-Adaid add a little natural beauty to the manmade
charms of the city.
In spite of the astonishing wealth, Qatar remains a deeply
traditional country – and it is this dichotomy that makes it
such a fascinating place. On the surface, Doha looks like
a little sister to Dubai; gleaming international hotels, vast
malls and man-made sandy beaches. But Qatari culture has
far more in common with its neighbour across the border,
Saudi Arabia. International hotel bars may serve alcohol,
but no Qatari women are allowed to enter them. Falconry
and camel-racing are still the pastimes of choice for many
Qataris – although shopping sprees in Chanel and Dior
probably run a close third.
Traditional it may be, but the Qatari Emir is also a mod-
ernizer, along with the iconic Museum of Islamic Art, the
Katara Cultural Village and MATHAF – the city’s Museum of
Modern Art – are ensuring that Qatar has more in the way of
culture than some of its Emirate neighbours.
Qatar has been an independent sovereign state since
1971. It is one of the six members of the Gulf Cooperation
Council (GCC), the others being Saudi Arabia, the United
Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain. Qatar comprises
an 11,500 sq. km peninsula extending northwards into the
Arabian Gulf. It has 563 km of uninterrupted coastline. The
country’s population stands at 2.3 million and its capital city
is Doha.

1.8. FOOD AND DRINK IN QATAR
Options for dining out in Qatar are pretty limited outside
Doha, but within the capital there has been a marked
improvement in recent years. Chefs such as Guy Savoy,
Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Gordon Ramsey have all
opened restaurants in the city, and the cosmopolitan mix of
population means that almost every cuisine imaginable can
be found, from Thai to American, Mexican and French.
Within the capital area, there is a wide range of quality
dining options, many but not all of which are to be found in
the 5-star hotels. The locally caught fish is a treat whether
lowered genteelly to your plate with silver service or brought
sizzling to the tale on kebab sticks at a more local-style cafe.
If the ubiquitous Gulf menu of rice, lamb and mezze (homos,
chopped salads and other appetisers) is not to your taste,
then there are plenty of Indian, Chinese and Thai options to
suit all budgets.
The fruit concoctions - such as lemon and mint, or avocado
milkshake - are irresistible in summer.
SPECIALITIESTraditional Levantine shawarma
(Spit-roasted meat shavings, served in pitta bread).
Egyptian foul and taamiyeh
(Deep-fried balls of mashed chickpeas).
Kabsa
(a traditional dish of rice with chicken)
Harees
(a traditional Qatari wheat and meat pudding)
Mashboos
(slow-cooked mutton served with spiced rice)
THINGS TO KNOW
• Alcohol is widely available in most top-end restaurants
and hotel bars in Doha although it is officially reserved for
hotel guests or ‘club members’. Drinking alcohol in public
outside these establishments is prohibited.
• A service charge is often added to bills in hotels and most
restaurants, otherwise 10% is appropriate. However in
smaller establishments, tipping is not the custom, and
over-generous tips from tourists often backfire through
the subsequent cutting of wages.
• Drinking age 21

DO’S AND DON’T’S
PLEASE DO
Dress modestly. Qatar is a Muslim country and it has
conservative dress codes. Trousers are acceptable for
women but avoid shorts, strappy low cut tops, see through
and transparent clothes.
Use Mowasalat turquoise taxis as they are safe and clean,
and the majority of the drivers speak English.
Drink plenty of water, especially during the hot summer.
Two litres of water per person, per day is the absolute
minimum that should be drunk.
Use a high factor sun block on all exposed skin, even in the
winter, including the tops of your feet if wearing sandals.
It is highly recommended to wear hats or caps.
Remember the air conditioning, which can chill you at
restaurants, cinemas and shopping malls. Take always along
a light jacket as a precaution.
PLEASE DON’T
Take a photograph without permission of other people,
including police and armed forces, or sensitive sites. Arabic
women and many older people strongly object to being
photographed.
Drink too much that your behaviour is affected in public.
Alcohol in Qatar is strictly regulated concession and there is
zero tolerance for drink driving, rowdy behaviour and drugs.
Display affection in public between men and women as
if deemed to infringe moral values, individuals may be
prosecuted.

2.1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is a country at the centre
of the Indochina.
Thailand is a wondrous kingdom, featuring Buddhist
temples, exotic wildlife, and spectacular islands. Along with
a fascinating history and an unique culture, Thailand has
a modern capital city and friendly people who epitomize
Thailand’s “land of smiles” reputation.
With a mixture of established destinations such as Phuket
and Hua Hin, and out-of-the-way palm-fringed islands,
Thailand has a very exotic appeal. It caters for grungy
backpacking types wanting to party into the wee hours
through to those who prefer white tablecloth dining and
clinking wine glasses. From staying on a converted rice
barge, clambering into a jungle tree house or bedding down
in a hill tribe village, the country offers a wealth of choice for
all tastes and budgets.
For divers, snorkelers, and those who just like stroll around
on white-powder sand there are postcard-perfect beaches,
and the extraordinary metropolis of Bangkok in the south,
while the north offers the sublime delights of culture-packed
Chiang Mai with its temple-studded old town, and cooling
forests and mountain retreats.
Buddhism is a way of life there.
And don’t forget the food! A culinary adventure awaits with
tempting morsels on virtually every street corner, from
traditional Royal-project run restaurants to delicious piping
hot street food. Eating is as much a part of the culture here
as anything else and definitely the key to local hearts. If
you’re lucky enough to catch a local festival, it will probably
be dominated by food.
Thailand is divided into 76 political provinces, with Bangkok
serving as the political, commercial, industrial, educational,
and entertainment capital of the country.
“Suphon Buri” which is located just a hundred kilometers
away from Bangkok, is an ancient town rich in natural and
historical heritage. The Province was once an important
border town involving important battles during the period of
the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

Recommendations do change from time to time and it is important to discuss your personal requirements with your doctor.
MALARIA RECOMMENDATIONS
The risk of ) malaria varies throughout
) South East Asia but appropriate preventive medicines are
required for several areas. Measures should always be taken
to ) avoid mosquito bites, such as nets and creams.
FOOD AND DRINK
Use only bottled or boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth
or making ice. Unpasteurised milk should also be boiled,
although pasteurised or homogenised milk is available.
Tinned or powdered milk is safe as long as it is reconstituted
with sterile water. Beware of dairy products that may have
been made with unboiled milk. Stick to meat and fish
that have been well cooked, preferably served hot, but not
reheated. Avoid raw vegetables and unpeeled fruit.

TEMPORARY RESIDENCE
Visitors to Thailand who wish to conduct business, work or
study in the country can apply for a non-immigrant visa.
This allows holders a stay period up to 90 days. In addition,
to be able to work, visitors must hold a work permit issued
by the Ministry of Labour.
WORKING DAYS
Applications must be made in person and take two working
days to process.
SUFFICIENT FUNDS
Proof of adequate finances for the duration of your stay in
Thailand is required at the point of entry into the country
(i.e. traveller’s cheque and/or cash equivalent to 10,000 Baht
(€250) per person and 20,000 Baht (€500) per family).
EXTENSION OF STAY
Visa-exempt nationals wishing to leave Thailand and
re-enter the country after their initial 15 or 30 days may only
stay for a maximum of 90 days in a six-month period.
Be wary of visa-run or visa extension services offering to
renew your visa - these are illegal and each year a number of
tourists are jailed, having turned up to border crossings with
a fake Thailand visa or entry stamp in their passport.
Thailand visa extensions must be made before the current
visa runs out. A lengthy overstay can incur a maximum
penalty of a spell in jail before being deported and banned
from returning to the country. If you wish to extend your
stay, contact the Immigration Bureau
() www.immigration.go.th).
ENTRY WITH CHILDREN AND PETS
Children travelling with one parent or alone must have a
notarised letter of consent from one or both parents.
An incoming passenger can import up to two pets at one
time.
These include all domestic animals such as dogs, birds, cats
etc subject to the production of a required health certificate
from their country of origin. Pets are still liable for the usual
quarantine checks upon arrival.

2.8. FOOD AND DRINK IN THAILAND
Adored around the world, Thai cuisine expresses fun-
damental aspects of Thai culture it is generous, warm,
refreshing and relaxed. Each Thai dish relies on fresh, local
ingredients – pungent lemongrass, searing chillies and
plump seafood. A varied national menu is built around
the four fundamental flavours spicy, sweet, salty and sour.
Roving appetites go on eating tours of Bangkok noodle
shacks, seafood pavilions in Phuket and Burmese market
stalls in Mae Hong Son. Cooking classes reveal the simplicity
behind the seemingly complicated dishes and mastering the
market is an important survival skill.

GUIDE
Thai food is traditionally fairly hot and spicy, but most
tourist restaurants tend to tone down the heat for the more
fragile Western palate. Most Thai food is prepared with fresh
ingredients such as lemon grass and coriander and rice is
commonly eaten with most meals. Popular fruits are papaya,
jackfruit, mangosteens, rambutans, pomelos (similar to
grapefruits) and, above all, durians, which farangs (for-
eigners) either love or hate. The thorny fruits have a rather
malodorous scent which has even resulted in many hotels
banning them from their premises.
Excellent food can be found at the stalls of the many street
vendors around the country as well as top-notch eateries.
There are also many Asian and European restaurants
throughout the major cities and smaller towns. One distinc-
tive aspect of Thai food is the use of fresh herbs and spices
as well as the inclusion of fermented fish sauce in nearly
every dish –a potential problem for vegetarians, though
saying “jay” to indicate you are vegetarian goes a long way.
However, there are certainly regional variations in what is
typically considered Thai food; these are due to the influ-
ences of neighboring countries
While tap water is not generally recommended for con-
sumption, ice is generally safe in Thailand and bottled water
is ubiquitous and cheap. If you are concerned, you can
always stick with Thai beer, its nearly as cheap and the high
alcohol content of Thai beer ensures that any germs aren’t
likely to survive; Singha (pronounced “Sing”) and Chang
(which means elephant) are the two most popular.
Fruit smoothies and fruit juice are both very popular
smoothies made with fresh fruit and sugar syrup are
blended with ice that is generally safe to consume. Coconut
milk is another safe option as the coconut is simply cracked
open from the top and served whole with a straw.
Thai ice tea is served with condensed milk, which gives it
a pinkish orange color and sweet flavor. Thai ice coffee
(oliang) is a strong black pick me up far superior to the
Nescafe that is so often served as “coffee” in many restau-
rants. Otherwise, there are many Starbucks throughout the
Kingdom, particularly in Bangkok, if you really need a quick
coffee fix.

THINGS TO KNOW
Bars have counter or table service.
Western visitors will generally receive a handshake on
meeting. A Thai will be greeted with the traditional closed
hands and a slight bow of the head - the wai. Buddhist
monks are always greeted in this way.
The Thai Royal Family is regarded with an almost religious
reverence. Visitors should respect this. It is very bad
manners to make public displays of anger, as Thais regard
such behaviour as boorish and a loss of ‘face’. Public displays
of affection between men and women are also frowned
upon, and it is considered rude to touch anyone on the head
or to point one’s feet at someone. Shoes should be removed
before entering someone’s home or a temple.
Informal dress is widely acceptable and men are seldom, if
ever, expected to wear suits. Beachwear should be confined
to the beach and topless sunbathing is frowned upon.
Smoking is widely acceptable.
Thai is the official language. English is widely spoken,
especially in establishments catering for tourists.

3.1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Spirited Argentina, with its clamouring capital, vast pampas,
rolling wine regions and snowy peaks, is a land bursting
with adventure. It’s a place where the clichés hold true
football is essentially a religion, the beef is phenomenal
and there’s little point even thinking about starting a proper
night out before midnight. Its natural wonders range from
Andean plateaux and Patagonian glaciers to subtropical
waterfalls and wildlife-rich wetlands. There’s an awful lot to
love.
) Buenos Aires might sit at the very edge of the country,
gazing out across the Rio de la Plata, but it’s very much
Argentina’s centrepiece. The city of Evita and Maradona, its
tango halls, parillas (grill restaurants) and feisty porteños (BA
residents) provide a gutsy introduction to the country. In
the high-end neighbourhoods of Recoleta and ) Palermo
you’ll find designer boutiques and trendy eateries, while
historic San Telmo offers antique stalls, old-world cafés and
an abundance of live music.
In the north, scorched mountains and otherworldly rock
formations characterise the Salta region, where Spanish and
Gaucho traditions combine and Argentina’s famous white
wines flourish. Further west, in the Mendoza region, the
grapes are red and the foothills of the Andes offer skiing,
while down south, in Patagonia, you’ll find an astonishing
spread of expansive lakes, jagged peaks and mile upon
empty mile of open space.
Elsewhere, try walking in the glistening Lake District,
whale-watching off the coast at Puerto Madryn, meeting
baby penguins in Punta Tombo or exploring the Jesuit
chapels and farmhouses of Córdoba. Another of the
country’s majestic natural beauties is the mighty Iguazu
Falls, bordering Argentina and ) Brazil.
Despite living through a dark military dictatorship and a
spectacularly devastating economic crisis, Argentineans
still have a vivacious and infectious lust for life. And from
its subtropical top to its icy tip, it remains a mesmerising
country.
Neuquén is a province of Argentina, located in the west of
the country, at the northern end of Patagonia. It borders
Mendoza Province to the north, Rio Negro Province to the
southeast, and Chile to the west. It also meets La Pampa
Province at its northeast corner.

VACCINE RECOMMENDATIONS
DISEASE RECOMMENDATION WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
Typhoid Vaccination recommended 10 days before travel
Hepatitis A Vaccination recommended 2 weeks before travel
Diphtheria Vaccination recommended 3 months before travel
Hepatitis B Vaccination sometimes recommended at least 2 months before travel
Rabies Vaccination sometimes recommended** 1 month before travel
Yellow fever Vaccination recommended for endemic areas - get expert advice. No certificate required. 10 days before travel
Malaria Not required* * Argentina is a low risk area for malaria and instances are limited to northern lowlands in the Jujuy, Salta, Corrientes and Misiones provinces. Protection against mosquito bites
should be enough, but chloroquine can be used as an extra precautionary measure.** Recommended if visiting jungle or remote rural areas. If bitten, seek medical advice without delay. Recommendations that are marked “Vaccination sometimes recom-
mended” should be considered as “Vaccination strongly recommended” if a person is travelling frequently or spending extended time in that country, or if a person’s occupation or planned activities could put them at higher risk. It is important to get expert advice.
All travellers are advised to ensure that tetanus and polio
vaccinations are kept up to date.
Recommendations do change from time to time and it is
important to discuss your personal requirements with your
doctor.
Medical insurance is highly recommended as there are no
reciprocal health agreements. Medical facilities are generally
of a high standard in Buenos Aires, though of varying
quality outside the capital. Immediate cash payment is often
expected by doctors. To call an ambulance dial 107.
Many medicines that require a prescription in North
America and Europe can be bought over the pharmacy
counter in Argentina, although they may be known under
a different name here. If you require a regular medication,
bring the packaging into the pharmacy with you to show

OTHER RISKS
Tap water is generally considered safe in main cities and
towns, especially in Buenos Aires, but otherwise bottled
water is recommended. If bottled water is unavailable then
boil water for over a minute before drinking.
Dengue fever, carried by mosquitoes, is present but not
common. Leishmaniasis, a skin disease spread by sandflies,
is a low risk. Both can be avoided with sensible precau-
tionary measures such as using mosquito nets and insect
repellent in lowland and jungle areas. From around March to
October time, Argentine haemorrhagic fever - a viral disease
caused by Junin virus – can be picked up in the pampas. It
is transmitted by the corn mouse, by either by breathing in
dust contaminated with droppings or by contact with the
creature.

be aware that Argentina requires evidence that both parents
have given permission for the child to enter/leave the
country.
3.6. EMBASSIES INFORMATION IN ARGENTINA
In Argentina there are 240 foreign embassies and consulates. By ) clicking here you will be able to find the embassy you
require in alphabetical order.
3.7. CURRENCY AND BANK INFORMATION FOR ARGENTINA
CURRENCY INFORMATION
Peso (ARS; symbol AR$) = 100 centavos.
Peso notes are in denominations of AR$100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and
2. Coins are in denominations of AR$5, 2 and 1, and in 50,
25, 10, 5 and 1 centavos.
US Dollars are accepted in some hotels and tourist centres.
Prices in US Dollars are typically marked with US$ to avoid
confusion, but sometimes both peso and dollar prices are
both preceded by just $, so check if unsure.
€1 = AR$10.72
£1 = AR$13.6
US$1 = AR$8.51
CREDIT CARDS
Most major credit cards are accepted, but not as widely as in
the US or Europe; even some major hotels do not have credit
card facilities.
ATM ATMs are available in most cities and have options in
English, but it is still best to carry alternative forms of
payment as daily withdrawal limits are low and machines
don’t always work. During national holidays ATMs can run
out so it is wise to withdraw in advance.
Foreign tourists who are not resident in Argentina can no
longer pay for tourism-related services (air tickets, bus travel,
hotel rooms, all-inclusive tours etc) in Pesos. These services
must be paid for with foreign credit and bank cards, money
transfers (in foreign currencies) from abroad, in cash with
foreign money (eg US Dollars) or with cheques from foreign
accounts.
TRAVELLERS CHEQUES
It is advised to bring traveller’s cheques in US Dollars; these
can be exchanged at banks, bureaux de change and some
hotels. However, it is often difficult to exchange these in the
smaller towns.

GUIDE
BANKING HOURS
Mon-Fri 1000-1500.
CURRENCY RESTRICTION
Visitors to Argentina can import up to US$10,000 or its
equivalent without having to declare. The export of foreign
currency for amounts higher than US$10,000 or its equiva-
lent in other currencies is prohibited. Minors aged between
16 and 21 years old can exit Argentina with a maximum of
US$2,000 or its equivalent in other currencies, and minors
under 16 years old with a maximum amount of US$1,000 or
its equivalent in other currencies.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE
Foreign currencies can be exchanged in banks and author-
ised cambios (bureaux de change), which are available in all
major cities. Visitors should be aware that due to the instabil-
ity of the peso, there is a large ‘blue’ market for dollars, which
provides a much more favourable exchange rate of exchange.
Whilst it is illegal to exchange currency in from these unau-
thorised money lenders, the practice is so common so as to
make the black market rate the de facto rate.
DUTY FREEThe following goods may be imported into Argentina by
travellers over 16 years of age without incurring customs
duty:
• US$300 in personal or new goods if arriving by air, plus
an additional US$300 of goods purchased in duty-free
shops upon arrival.
• US$150 in personal or new goods if arriving by land or
waterway, plus an additional US$150 of goods purchased
in duty-free shops upon arrival.
Travellers under 16 may import half these amounts.
You should declare upon arrival items that might not be
considered part of normal luggage (such as expensive
camera equipment or musical instruments) and show
the declaration on departure. A licence is required
for firearms and ammunition for hunting purposes.
You must declare gold.
BANNED IMPORTS
Firearms (unless under licence from the National Arms
Registry), explosives, flammables, narcotics, and goods
considered a risk to health or safety.
3.8. FOOD AND DRINKS IN ARGENTINA
Argentina serves up an exceptional standard of food,
although choices can often be restricted to meat, pasta and
pizza. Buenos Aires, however, offers a wide selection of
culinary genres, with Japanese, Thai and Asian-fusion food
becoming increasingly popular. Vegetarians may struggle
to find extensive veggie options, but most restaurants do
serve vegetables and salads. Outside Buenos Aires, however,
vegetarians may be faced with quite limited choices.
Wherever you are in the country, meat is the name of the
game here, and if you fancy broadening your carnivorous
horizons, then there is a weird and wonderful array of meat
treats to get stuck into. The traditional Argentine parrilla
(grill) is the very heart and soul of Argentina’s cuisine. Don’t
forget to liberally douse your chosen meats in delicious
chimichurri – a sauce made from finely chopped parsley
and oregano, garlic, olive oil and vinegar. Those after an
authentic and reliably delicious meat experience in Buenos
Aires, try El Trapiche in Palermo, and Desnivel in San Telmo.
For breakfast, head to a traditional confitería (café) and
sample a few medialunas (small, croissant-like pastries) and
a strong café con leche. In cities, fashionable resto-bars
(restaurant-bars) are taking hold, offering more contempo-
rary takes on traditional Argentine cuisine, and all manner
of lunch options. A strong Italian influence means quality
ice cream is also popular. In the evening, Argentines dine
late – 21:00 is considered early – and the feasts are typically
massive.
Argentina’s wines have flooded the international market in
recent years, and are famed for their quality and value. Try
a light pinot noir from Patagonia or an inky and smooth
Malbec, and don’t miss Argentina’s celebrated white, the
aromatic Torrontés.
If you’re baffled by the choice of meat cuts most waiters
in parrillas are more than happy to advise on what to start
with and how much per person – even if you have limited
Spanish.

3.10. TRAVELING AROUND ARGENTINA
BY AIR
Argentina is huge, making air travel the most practical
way to get around. However, airlines in Argentina operate
a two-tier pricing structure, which means that foreign
travellers pay twice, or even three times as much, as locals.
Aerolíneas Argentinas serves many domestic desti-
nations from its key hubs in Buenos Aires, Cordoba and
Bariloche.
ROAD CONDITIONS
A 4x4 is recommended if venturing too far outside rural
areas. When driving in cities keep windows closed and doors
locked, especially when stopping at junctions.
Major roads are generally in good condition, although rural
roads, composed of packed dirt, can become impassable
after rain.
The ‘A’ roads are the autopistas (motorways) and those
labelled ‘R’ are rutas (roads) - tolls exist on all main roads.
The Automóvil Club Argentino - ACA (Tel 0800 777 2894
in Argentina; www.aca.org.ar) offers breakdown cover and
reciprocal benefits for members of motoring organisations
in other countries.
REGULATIONS
The maximum speed limit on motorways is 130kph
(80mph), 80kph (50mph) on one-lane roads, while the speed
limit in built-up areas varies (40-60kph/25-37mph). The
wearing of seat belts is compulsory.
CAR HIRE
Visitors aged 21 or over may hire a car in Argentina. Car hire
is available in most towns and cities, and many international
companies operate out of Buenos Aires and main tourist
destinations.

ROAD DIRECTIONS
From Bariloche you will drive towards the north and about
20 kms away you will find the route to Villa La Angostura
which is 70 kms away. It is all paved and it has a beautiful
overlook of all the coast line of Nahuel Huapi Lake. From the
North you can get here along the Seven Lakes Route, which
you can take in San Martin de los Andes. You will have a
90 kms drive while observing the mountain range lakes with
their awesome sights.
Frontier passages:Cardenal Samoré Passage (former
Puyehue)
It is 1314 AMSL (42º 29’ 07’’ South Latitude – 70º 25’ 91’’ West
Longitude) and it is open all year long. It is considered the
second most important in the country because it has direct
communication with Puerto Montt (220 kms away) and
Osorno (117 kms away) along the Chilean Austral Motorway
and with all the other parts of the Chilean Patagonia. The
road is paved in almost all its stretches, you must be careful
in the stretches which are still being built. It is an important
commercial passage, which makes the traffic quite thick.
The road is of rubble over National Route 231, it is averagely
7 metres wide and it is in good conditions. The distance to
the limit is 4 km.

4.1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Spicy as salsa roja, intoxicating as a shot of tequila, volatile
as the volcanoes of the central sierra, surreal as a Frida Kahlo
canvas, monumental as the pyramids of Teotihuacán and
warm as its inhabitants, Mexico fills the senses, tweaks the
intellect and nourishes the soul.
The legacy of the great Maya civilizations continues to
reverberate amongst its descendants on the Yucatán
Peninsula and in southeast Mexico. Mexico’s early civi-
lizations remain a source of pride to modern Mexicans.
Nowadays pillars of national identity are Mariachi, Tequila,
and Charrería (A traditional Mexican Rodea and a national
sport in Mexico).
Mexico’s geographical features range from swamp to desert,
and from tropical lowland jungle to high alpine vegetation.
Over half the country is at an altitude greater than 1,000 m.
The weather in Mexico is as varied as its geography there
are tropical forests, arid desserts, fertile valleys and snow
covered mountain peaks. The coasts are generally warm
throughout the year, although it is very rainy during some
months. In Mexico City, the weather is quite pleasant,
neither too hot nor too cold. In the central highlands, the
weather is cool, as well as in the mountainous areas.
Spanish is the official language (spoken by more than 90%).
English is widely spoken. 8% of population speaks indige-
nous languages, of which Nátinate is most common.
Guanajuato, the capital of Guanajuato state, is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site and a charming colonial-era city
situated in a picturesque valley surrounded by Sierra de
Guanajuato Mountains.
Founded in 1559, Guanajuato is a former silver mining city
and nowadays is one of the best-communicated states in
México, with a complete network of roads. Its rail network
is located in the area of confluence of the main trade routes
of the country, and by air it is well connected to the main
destinations in México and the United States.

tradition they have in producing and selling leather shoes.
León is the biggest city in the State, with 1.6 million inhabit-
ants in the metro area, and the fifth biggest city in México.
Recognized for having the best cycling network in the
world, in 2012 was named “City Water Champion” because

Typhoid Vaccination recommended 10 days before travel
Hepatitis B *Vaccination sometimes recommended 2 months before travel
Yellow fever Not required
Tuberculosis *Vaccination sometimes recommended 3 months before travel *Recommendations that are marked “Vaccination sometimes recommended” should be considered as “Vaccination strongly recommended” if a person is travelling frequently or spending extended time in that country.
Comprehensive health insurance is recommended. Medical
facilities are both private and state-organized and generally
good. Medicines are often available without prescriptions,
and pharmacists can diagnose and treat minor ailments.
MALARIA RECOMMENDATIONS
The risk of Malaria varies throughout the regions of
South America, Central America and the Caribbean but in
some areas appropriate preventive medicines are needed.
Measures should always be taken to avoid mosquito bites,
such as nets and creams.
FOOD AND DRINK
Water for drinking, brushing teeth or ice should be boiled or
sterilized. Milk in major cities, hotels and resorts is pasteur-
ized; otherwise, it should be boiled. Powdered or tinned milk
is available. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish, cooked
vegetables and peeled fruit.
OTHER RISKS
Diarrhea and sunburn affect some travellers. Rabies is
present. If bitten, seek medical advice without delay. Owing
to the high altitude and level of smog in Mexico City, visitors
may take some time to acclimatize.

passport, return/onward ticket and proof of financial means.
(b) Tourist Cards must be kept by the visitor during the entire
length of the stay as they will have to be presented and
stamped on leaving.
c) Immigration authorities may require your return airline

lers over 18 years of age without incurring customs duty
400 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 200g of tobacco;
3L of spirits and 6L of wine;
Other goods to the value of US$300 (if arriving by air) or

Economy and the Ministry of National Defense.
4.7. EMBASSIES INFORMATION IN MEXICO
In Mexico there are 220 foreign embassies and consulates. By clicking here you will be able to find the embassy you
require in alphabetical order.
4.8. CURRENCY AND BANK INFORMATION FOR MEXICO
CURRENCY INFORMATION
Mexican Peso (MXN; symbol M$) = 100 centavos.
Notes are in denominations of M$1,000, 500, 200, 100, 50
and 20. Coins are in denominations of M$10, 5, 2 and 1, and
50 and 20 centavos.
€1 = M$17.58
£1 = M$20.78
US$1 = M$12.85
Note The M$1,000 and M$500 notes can be difficult to
change and are sometimes not accepted.
CREDIT CARDS
MasterCard, Visa and American Express cards are generally
accepted by businesses catering to tourists, such as car
rental agencies, airlines, some bus lines and higher-end
hotels, shops and restaurants. (Credit companies add a
surcharge of around 5% for foreign transactions.) At humbler
establishments you’ll need pesos to make purchases.
ATM
ATMs on the Cirrus and Plus networks are easily found in
cities and towns throughout Mexico, dispensing pesos for
holders of both debit and credit cards.
MXGP2016

GUIDE
TRAVELLERS CHEQUES
ATMs and credit cards mean traveller’s cheques are less
necessary as a means of carrying money than they used to
be and not necessarily recommended. However, traveller’s
cheques issued by well-known brands can be cashed in
exchange houses. Traveller’s cheques in Pounds Sterling
and Euros are now as readily accepted as those in US Dollars.
BANKING HOURS
Mon-Fri 09.00-16.00; some banks are open longer hours and
others are open on Saturday mornings.
CURRENCY RESTRICTION
Local currency and foreign currency may be imported and
exported up to the equivalent of US$10,000; larger amounts
must be declared.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE
The US dollar is widely accepted; indeed in some instances
it can be difficult to pay in pesos. Currency exchange houses
give a preferable rate of exchange to hotels and a much
quicker service than banks.
4.9. FOOD AND DRINK IN MEXICO
Corn is the main ingredient in Mexican cuisine, and
every meal comes with a basket of hot tortillas - rounds of
toasted cornmeal. Tacos, available everywhere, consist of
hot tortillas topped with beef, pork or fish. Other common
corn-based antojitos (snacks) include tamales (banana leaf
or corn-husk packages of cornmeal laced with various
spicy sauces), quesadillas (fried tortillas filled with cheese
and/or vegetables) and flautas (chicken-filled tortillas rolled
like cigars and deep fried). Zesty salsas, often served in clay
bowls, are another must at any table or lunch counter.
Fresh fish and shellfish are the main attraction along both
coasts. For vegetarians, nopales, the succulent and slightly
slimy leaves of the prickly pear cactus are a good option,
as are squash blossoms and all kinds of wild mushrooms.
Also look out for exotic fruits like zapote (sapodilla) and tuna
(cactus fruit).
SPECIALITIES
Mole
(Refers to a range of complex sauces based around chili and
a number of other herbs and spices and to a range of dishes
made with these sauces).
Guacamole
(Avocado mole with red peppers, onions and tomatoes).
Cabrito asado
(Roasted kid goat – It’s a northern specialty, served on a bed
of sizzling onions with cowboy beans and plenty of tortillas).
Cochinita pibil
(Yucatán’s signature dish suckling pig marinated in citrus
juice and the reddish dye of annatto seeds, wrapped in
banana leaves, then slow-roasted in an underground pit).
Poc-Chuc
(Pork dish with sour orange).

GUIDE
TIPPING
Service charges are rarely added to hotel, restaurant or bar
bills and many of the staff depend on tips for their livelihood.
15% is expected and 20% if the service has been very good.
REGIONAL DRINKS
Among local spirits, tequila, mezcal and rum reign supreme.
Corona and Sol are the most popular beers - light and
refreshing, and often drunk with a wedge of lime.
Tequila is a double or triple-distilled spirit made from the
blue variety of agave, which is a plant related to the lily.
Young blanco tequilas can have a rough ‘cowboy’ edge to
them.
Older añejo varieties are woody and sometimes as smooth
as a fine brandy.
Mezcal is similar to tequila, but is distilled only once and can
be made from different varieties of agave. It is not generally
used in cocktails like tequila, but consumed in shots. Sip
slowly to savor the taste.
Mexico’s coffee liqueur, kahlúa, is world-famous.
DRINKING AGE
18 years old.

4.11. TRAVELING INSIDE MEXICO
With an extensive, inexpensive public transport network, copious accommodations to suit all budget categories, and a
friendly, inclusive vibe, travelling around Mexico is easy and highly recommended.
BY AIR
There is an excellent network of daily scheduled flights in
Mexico between principal commercial centers operated by
longstanding airline Aeroméxico (www.aeromexico.com).
Mexicana, the country’s second major airline is no longer in
operation. Many of the smaller airports also have capacity
for large planes and some international flights.
ROAD CONDITIONS
Most of Mexico’s roads are the modern “Cuota” toll roads.
They are generally much faster than the free “Libre” roads
considering that they pass through small towns and villages.
A third sign, “Libramiento”, indicates a toll-paying bypass
road.
It is advisable to keep car doors and windows closed and
locked, especially at traffic lights in some areas.
CAR HIRE
Self-drive cars are available at airports, city centres and
resorts. All the established international agencies operate
in Mexico. Reputable Internet-only agencies are worth a
look for cheap deals. Beware of hidden extras, and poor
breakdown services, particularly with local firms.
ROAD REGULATION SUMMARY
Speed limits are 30-50kph (19-31mph) in towns and
80-120kmph (50-75mph) on motorways. All auto passengers
are required to wear safety belts. Car use in Mexico City is
restricted so as to reduce pollution. The last digit of the car
number plate determines when that car cannot be driven.
DOCUMENTATION:
An International Driving Permit is required. The minimum
driving age is for car hire is usually 21. Mexican vehicle
insurance is, check if insurance is included in hire agree-
ments.

GETTING AROUND TOWNS AND CITIES
Mexican cities and towns generally have good public
transportation networks, with frequent bus and taxi service
around town and to/from inter-city bus stations. Busses are
cheap, with signs affixed to their windshields announcing
their destinations. Taxis are easy to find; usually they charge
by distance (it’s best to agree on the fare beforehand) but in
larger cities are metered.
The country’s three largest cities, Mexico City, Monterrey
and Guadalajara, all have modern metro systems. Various
kinds of taxis ply the streets of Mexico City cruising street
taxis are metered and cheap; radio taxis operating from
sitios (taxi stands) charge more but are considered a more
secure option. In the city center, bicycle taxis offer a
non-polluting alternative.

5.1. GENERAL INFORMATION
North Carolina thrills you with swashbuckling pirates and
spectacular mountain highways, sensational beaches and a
gamut of historic sites.
White sand and surf lure sun worshipers and adrenaline
junkies to the state’s 480km (300 miles) of barrier island
beaches; surfers paddle out to ride the renowned swell at
Cape Hatteras; hang-gliders launch off dunes the size of
small mountains at Jockey’s Ridge; and wild horses roam
the beach at Corolla in the Outer Banks.
If flopping on the sand doesn’t do it for you, try North Caro-
lina’s historic attractions. Think Europe has the stately home
market tied up? Think again. Built in the late 1800s, Biltmore
House is the USA’s largest home and is reminiscent of a
French château. Or you can head underground at Reed Gold
Mine, site of the country’s first documented gold discovery.
The state’s oldest town is Bath, but you’re more likely to find
traces of Blackbeard here than Jane Austen.
Come autumn, convoys of sightseers cruise the Blue
Ridge Parkway, a 406km (252-mile) scenic drive through
mountains and dense forests, to snap the state’s kaleidosco-
pic colours.
But North Carolina’s pièce de résistance is its world-class
ice climbing. While you can stand and gaze at plummeting
waterfalls in summer, hacking your way up them with
crampons and an ice axe is a sure-fire way to crank up the
adrenaline. Starshine, a 60m (200ft) route on Whitesides
Mountain, is considered one of the gnarliest.
Looking for some city action? Famed for its NASCAR racing,
Charlotte is also home to the US National Whitewater Center
and the outstanding Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
Raleigh meanwhile boasts over 40 free attractions, including
the terrific North Carolina Museum of Art.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HEALTH CARE
Travel insurance that provides medical coverage is strongly
advised for visitors to the US. Only emergency cases are
treated without prior payment and treatment may be
refused without evidence of insurance or a deposit. All
receipts for services rendered must be kept in order to make
a claim. Medical care in the United States tends to be quite
expensive, especially for emergency treatment provided in
hospital settings, paid for out of pocket.
In case of an emergency or accident, dial 911 from any
public or private phone to be put in touch with paramedics,
fire fighters, and police officers. Stay on the line until the
operator instructs you to hang up.
Medical facilities in the US are generally of a high standard,
and most major cities have specialty hospitals and clinics to
treat specific illnesses. Clinics and hospitals are run by both
public and private entities and are highly regulated by local,
state, and federal agencies. Health care tends toward the
traditional, medical-oriented model of care conventionally
practiced in the West, and care is provided by doctors,
nurses, nurse practitioners, depending on both the setting
and the procedure.
Many medications available over the counter in other
countries require a prescription in the US. Visitors from
outside the US are advised to bring an adequate supply
of prescription medication for their entire stay. It can be
difficult to get medication that was prescribed abroad in the
US. Visitors may also want to bring the contact information
for their home physician should they need to consult with
him or her whilst abroad.
Those visiting the USA for long periods with school-age
children should be aware that school entry requirements
include proof of immunisation against diphtheria, measles,
poliomyelitis and rubella throughout the USA; schools in
many states also require immunisation against tetanus,
pertussis (whooping cough) and mumps.
HIV-positive visitors are no longer required to obtain or
present a Waiver of Inadmissibility, under the so-called “HIV
Final Rule” of 2009.
VACCINE RECOMMENDATIONS
All travellers are advised to ensure that tetanus is kept up to
date.
OTHER RISKS
The US is generally considered a safe destination for world
visitors. Occasional outbreaks of disease, such as West Nile
Virus (a mosquito-borne illness), H1N1 and the plague have
occurred in recent years, however. Frequent hand-washing
and general practices of good hygiene are encouraged
to protect oneself against all types of illness. There have
been rare cases of rabies, but special precautions are not
necessary.
Another concern with regard to safety is the ubiquity of
firearms, which remains a contentious issue in the United
States. Terrorism also poses a small risk, although city, state,
and federal agencies have stringent anti-terrorism practices
in place.
5.5. VISA AND PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS
PASSPORTS
To enter the United States of America, a passport valid for
the duration of stay is required by nationals in the chart
below.
PASSPORT NOTE
All travellers entering the USA under the Visa Waiver
Program require individual machine-readable passports.
Travellers not in possession of machine-readable passports
require a valid USA entry visa.
Visitors to the USA travelling under the Visa Waiver Program
must obtain authorisation from the Electronic System for
Travel Authorization (ESTA), a fully automated, electronic
system for screening passengers before they begin travel
to the USA, if arriving by air or sea. It is recommended that
applications are made at least 72 hours prior to travel but
you may apply at any time prior to travel. Airlines must deny
check-in to passengers without valid ESTA. Apply online
( https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov). There is a US$14 fee.
An ESTA is valid for two years, so if you’ve applied for one
previously, ensure it’s still valid.
When applying for ESTA-authorisation and entering the
MXGP2016
— 63 — TRAVELLERS’
GUIDE
passport number, the number 0 must not be replaced by
letter O as this can lead to problems upon entering the USA.
The granting of an ESTA does not guarantee entry to the
USA.
Canadian citizens do not require an ESTA, but permanent
residents of Canada Canada who are eligible for the Visa
Waiver Program must obtain one.
All people, including US citizens, travelling by air, land,
or sea between the USA and Canada, Central and South
America, the Caribbean and Bermuda are required to
present a valid passport, or other approved document, when
entering or re-entering the USA.
VISAS

VISA REQUIRED
Australian Yes Yes No
British Yes Yes No
Canadian Yes No No
Other EU Yes Yes No/1
Visas are not required by nationals referred to in the chart
above for stays of up to 90 days, except:
1. Nationals of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and
Romania, who do require a visa as they are not included in
the Visa Waiver Program.
Countries are occasionally added to the Visa Waiver
Program; check the US Department of State’s website for
recent additions ( http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/
english/visit/visa-waiver-program.html).
All passengers using US airports for transit purposes
are required to obtain a transit visa. This does not affect
qualified travellers travelling visa-free under the Visa Waiver
Program.
To qualify for visa-free travel under the Visa Waiver
Program, nationals must travel on a valid passport, for
holiday, transit or business purposes only and for a stay not
exceeding 90 days.
Holders of UK passports with the endorsement British
Subject, British Dependent Territories Citizen, British
Protected Person, British Overseas Citizen or British
National (Overseas) Citizen do not qualify for the Visa Waiver
Program. A passport which states holder has right of abode
or indefinite leave to remain in the UK does not qualify for
visa-free travel.
A visa does not expire with the expiry of the holder’s
passport. An unexpired, endorsed visa in an expired
passport may be presented for entry into the USA, as long as
the visa itself has not been cancelled, is undamaged, is less
than 10 years old and is presented with a valid non-expired
passport, provided that both passports are for the same
nationality.
Nationals of countries not referred to in the chart above are
advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements.
Take note the USA does not participate in the Schengen visa
scheme.
TYPES AND COST
Tourist, business, transit and student visas: US$160.
VALIDITY
Visas may be used for travel to the USA until the date of
expiry as long as presented with a valid passport. Some visas
are valid for multiple entries. The length of stay in the USA is
determined by US immigration officials at the time of entry.
Travellers who are visa-free under the Visa Waiver Program
do not require a transit visa, but must obtain ESTA-authori-
sation prior to travel.
APPLICATION TO
Consulate (or consular section at the embassy). Applications
made through travel agents or couriers cost an additional
€20. Visas cannot be obtained at the airport or port of entry.
WORKING DAYS
Embassy or consulate. All visitors requiring a visa must
attend an interview at the nearest US consulate/embassy.
EXTENSION OF STAY AND TEMPORARY RESIDENCE
Citizens of visa waiver countries may not apply to extend
their stay. Citizens of other countries must file a request with
US Citizenship and Immigration Services using Form I-539;
the form must be submitted prior to the expiration of the
original visa.
MXGP2016
— 64 — TRAVELLERS’
GUIDE
Varies widely - check with embassy/consulate for current
processing times. At the US Embassy in the UK, there is a
22-day wait for appointments and visa processing takes four
working days.
US Customs and Border Protection requires that visitors
from abroad substantiate they have sufficient funds to enter
the USA. The amount is not a fixed number, however, and
does not have to be solely in cash; credit cards, traveller’s
cheques and other currency equivalents are considered. For
more information, check the USCBP’s website
( www.cbp.gov).
ENTRY RESTRINCTIONS
Visitors who have been arrested (even if the arrest did not
result in a criminal conviction), visitors with a criminal
record, and visitors with certain communicable diseases are
not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and must apply for
a visa.
5.6. BANNED IMPORTS AND EXPORTS
ALLOWED IMPORTS
The following goods may be imported into Brazil by travel-
lers over 18 years of age without incurring customs duty:
12L of alcohol; 200 cigarettes and 25 cigars and 250g of
tobacco; 20 items (such as small gifts) worth up to US$10
each (or US$5 if arriving by land).
The total value of the above items should not exceed US$500
if arriving by air or sea or US$300 if arriving by land. In
addition to the US$500 limit, travellers can buy goods up to
US$500 in value at the duty-free shop on arrival in Brazil.
The following limits apply: 24 units of alcohol; 200 cigarettes
and 25 cigars and 250g of tobacco; 10 toiletry items; 3 of the
following: watches, toys, games or electronic items.
BANNED IMPORTS
The following are either banned or may only be imported
under licence:

5.8. CURRENCY AND BANK INFORMATION FOR BRAZIL
CURRENCY INFORMATION
US Dollar (USD; symbol $) = 100 cents. Notes are in denomi-
nations of $100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1, though the $2 bill is rare
and is not in high circulation. Coins are in denominations of
$1, and 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.
€1 = US$ 1.09
£1 = US$ 1.45
CREDIT CARDS
Most major credit cards are accepted throughout the USA,
including American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and
Visa. Visitors are advised to carry at least one major credit
card, as it is common to request pre-payment or a credit
card imprint for hotel rooms and car hire, even when final
payment is not by credit card. Be sure to check with your
card issuer for current surcharge rates imposed for use of
the card outside your home country. You should also inform
your issuer that you are travelling for a specified period so
your card is not flagged or temporarily suspended.
Bank-issued debit cards are accepted at many businesses in
the US; however, using them to pay for many travel-related
expenses, such as car hire and hotel rooms, often incurs a
surcharge, deposit, or a hold on your account.
ATM
ATMs are widely available across the country.
TRAVELLERS CHEQUES
Widely accepted in US Dollar cheques; Pound Sterling
traveller’s cheques are rarely accepted and few banks will
honour them. Change is issued in US Dollars. One or two
items of identification (passport, credit card, driving licence)
will be required.
BANKING HOURS
Variable, but generally Mon-Fri 0830-1700.
CURRENCY RESTRICTION
There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or
foreign currency. However, amounts in excess of US$10,000
or equivalent should be declared at customs.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE
Hotels do not, as a rule, exchange currency and only a
few major banks will exchange foreign currency, so it is
advisable to arrive with US Dollars, or exchange foreign
currency at the airport upon arrival.
USA DUTY FREE
The following goods may be imported by visitors over
21 years of age into the USA without incurring customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars.
• 1L of alcoholic beverage.
• Goods up to a value of US$800 (returning residents who
have been out of the country for at least 48 hours; this
limit is applicable once every 30 days and is reduced
to US$200 for travellers who have already used the
allowance or have been out of the USA for less than
48 hours).
• Goods up to a value of US$100 (non-residents visiting the
USA for at least 72 hours).
Travellers arriving from certain Caribbean and Latin
American countries may import up to 2L of alcoholic
beverages, as long as at least 1L was produced in one of the
applicable countries.
US residents returning from a US insular possession
( American Samoa, Guam or US Virgin Islands)
have a duty-free allowance of US$1,600, including up to
1,000 cigarettes (at least 800 of which must have been
bought in the insular possession) and 5L of alcoholic
beverages, one of which must be a product of the insular
possession.
Further information on US customs regulations is available
online ( www.cbp.gov).

5.9. FOOD AND DRINKS IN USA
In large cities, restaurants are mostly modern and very
clean, offering a vast range of cuisines, prices and facilities.
Restaurants come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from
fast-food, self-service and counter service, to drive-thru
and table service. There are numerous options for casual
and fine dining alike. ‘Diners’, now a fading US institution,
consist of simple food served from the counter. These are
often located in smaller towns, and although they have
been replaced by fast food chains in many areas, can still be
found along the east coast and in parts of the southern US,
midwest and southwest.
Given the country’s diverse cultural groups, the range of
cuisines available in the US is large. In fact, many people
believe the US does not have its own distinct cuisine, and
that its primary attribute is its tendency to fuse various
influences. Within cities especially, cultural enclaves often
have entire neighbourhoods devoted to specialized global
cuisines: Vietnamese in parts of New Orleans; Somali and
Ethiopian on the outskirts of Minneapolis; and, of course
Chinese and Italian in New York City’s Chinatown and
Little Italy, which are adjoining neighbourhoods in lower
Manhattan.
As the country has become more culturally diverse, so has
the average palate. Today every imaginable dish can be
found coast to coast, with an increasing emphasis on fresh
and healthy. Nevertheless, many Americans still love the
foods that are most often associated with the US, even if
they’re not the healthiest options. These favourites include:
• Hamburgers.
• Fried chicken.
• Barbecue.
• Cheesecake.
• Key lime pie.
• Apple pie.
Numerous festivals are held annually in North Carolina in
honour of favourite foods, including apples, watermelons,
seafood, turkey, pickles and collard greens.
SPECIALITIES
Sweet potato pie.
Barbecue (pork barbecue with salty, vinegar sauce).
THINGS TO KNOW
There are also many types of bars, cocktail lounges, café-
style bars and English-style pubs. Generally speaking,
waiter/waitress service costs more than self-service or
take-out. Drinking laws are set by the individual states,
counties, municipalities and towns; on average, closing time
in bars is between midnight and 0300.
TIPPING
Widely practised, as service charges are not usually included
in the bill and waiters depend heavily on tips for their
income. Waiters generally expect 10 to 20% gratuity. Often,
service charges are included for larger parties; if the restau-
rant’s policy is not clearly stated on its menu, ask the server.
It should be noted that a cover charge is for admission to an
establishment, not a tip for service.

REGIONAL DRINKS • Coca-Cola.
• Regional wines.
• Microbrewery beer.
• Speciality coffees.
• Regional cocktails
DRINKING AGE
The legal age for alcoholic consumption varies from 18 to
21 years, varying from state to state. Laws on the availability
of alcohol run from New Orleans’ policy of anytime,
anywhere and anyone, to localities, such as parts of Utah,
where drinking is strictly prohibited. Verification of age is
frequently required prior to service, provided in the form of
an identification card; in the case of foreigners, this would
be a passport.

6.1. GENERAL INFORMATION
‘The Golden State’ of California has it all: snow-capped
mountains, sweeping coastlines, vast deserts, unique
wildlife, lush forests and long stretches of golden beach.
Beyond all of California’s natural beauty is authentic cuisine,
world famous family adventure parks, and history in the
making.
The ruggedly beautiful coastline curves north of
Los Angeles to San Francisco along the famous Big
Sur coastal highway, one of USA’s most scenic drives and
the backdrop to hundreds of classic Hollywood movies.
California’s best-known wine country extends north of
San Francisco into the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, but
excellent wine regions also flourish near Santa Barbara
and San Diego. Northern California is the land of giant
sequoias and redwoods, waterfalls, whitewater rivers, forests,
icy lakes and towering mountains. Los Angeles, the ‘City of
Angels’, is the second-largest city in the USA and lives up
to its reputation as ‘the entertainment capital of the world’.
Celebrity spotting in chic boutiques, four-star restaurants, or
just the gas station is a regular and fun occurrence. Rodeo
Drive in Beverly Hills brings the best (and most expensive)
fashions from across the globe to one small street.
Orange County is home to one of the world’s most famous
attractions - Disneyland Resort - as well as 67km (42 miles)
of beaches and the charming rural communities of the Santa
Ana Mountains. The Desert region, in the southeast, features
expansive landscapes, brilliant skies, traces of pioneer
history and glittering resort cities.
Further south, sharing a border with Mexico, lies San Diego,
a haven for surfers, animal lovers, and sun seekers. Cali-
fornian weather can occasionally get chilly, but not in San
Diego, which has been named as the best summer climate in
America. Surfing enthusiasts and sun worshipers enjoy sand
and surf on over fourteen beaches including world famous
La Jolla Beach. Families love SeaWorld Parks and Entertain-
ment for a great way to get up close with Californian sea
lions, dolphins, beluga whales, and turtles.
The Inland Empire (I.E.) is a metropolitan area and region
of Southern California, eastern of Los Angeles metropolitan
area.
The metropolitan area consists of Riverside County and San
Bernardino County.
Devore is a rural and mountainous neighborhood in the city
and county of San Bernardino, California, located near the
northern junction of Interstate 15 and Interstate 215 about 12
miles north-west of downtown of San Bernardino.

GUIDE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HEALTH CARE
Travel insurance that provides medical coverage is strongly
advised for visitors to the US. Only emergency cases are
treated without prior payment and treatment may be refused
without evidence of insurance or a deposit. All receipts
for services rendered must be kept in order to make a
claim. Medical care in the United States tends to be quite
expensive, especially for emergency treatment provided in
hospital settings, paid for out of pocket.
In case of an emergency or accident, dial 911 from any
public or private Tel to be put in touch with paramedics,
fire fighters, and police officers.
HIV-positive visitors are no longer required to obtain or
present a Waiver of Inadmissibility, under the so-called
“HIV Final Rule” of 2009.
VACCINE RECOMMENDATIONS
All travellers are advised to ensure that tetanus is kept up to
date.
FOOD AND DRINK
All restaurants in California are graded by the US health
inspector with a letter rating system that must be hung in
the front window. Any restaurant without an A or B rating is
best avoided.
Food trucks, (mobile kitchens that sell food) are an
increasingly popular option especially in Los Angeles
and San Francisco. By law, food trucks are subject to
the same health code requirements, inspections, and letter
grade system that stationary restaurants are. Tap water in
California is very safe and governed by strict municipal laws
that monitor purity and filtration. In 2011, several clean water
bills were signed into law that guarantee clean drinking
water in California, even in remote and disadvantaged
communities.
Though the tap water is safe, drinking bottled water is very
fashionable, especially water infused with vitamins or
antioxidants. Many high end restaurants don’t offer water
from the tap. Public drinking fountains are available in
airports, parks, and schools but with increasing irregularity.
Water bowls for pets are commonly placed on the sidewalk
by local merchants, especially during the hotter months.
OTHER RISKS
There is no law in the United States requiring Genetically
Modified foods to be labelled as such. All raw fruits and
vegetables should be washed with clean water before
consuming for the removal of pesticides.
Asthma sufferers should take extra precaution and use
a mask if biking in the city because of the air pollution
especially in Los Angeles. Traffic accidents are also high due
to the number of cars and motorists on the road. Sunburn
and dehydration are common concerns during the hottest
months and can be avoided by drinking lots of water. Some
beaches have riptides and high waves; visitors should
proceed with caution and only swim and surf at approved
beaches where there are lifeguards and flag warning
systems.

6.5. VISA AND PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS
When applying for ESTA-authorisation and entering the
passport number, the number 0 must not be replaced by
letter O as this can lead to problems upon entering the USA.
The granting of an ESTA does not guarantee entry to
the USA.
Canadian citizens do not require an ESTA, but permanent
residents of Canada who are eligible for the Visa Waiver
Program must obtain one.

Nationals of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania,
who do require a visa as they are not included in the Visa
Waiver Program.
Countries are occasionally added to the Visa Waiver
Program; check the US Department of State’s website for
recent additions ( http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/
english/visit/visa-waiver-program.html).
All passengers using US airports for transit purposes
are required to obtain a transit visa. This does not affect
qualified travellers travelling visa-free under the Visa Waiver
Program.
To qualify for visa-free travel under the Visa Waiver
Program, nationals must travel on a valid passport, for
holiday, transit or business purposes only and for a stay not
exceeding 90 days.
Holders of UK passports with the endorsement British
Subject, British Dependent Territories Citizen, British
Protected Person, British Overseas Citizen or British
National (Overseas) Citizen do not qualify for the Visa Waiver
Program. A passport which states holder has right of abode
or indefinite leave to remain in the UK does not qualify for
visa-free travel.
A visa does not expire with the expiry of the holder’s
passport. An unexpired, endorsed visa in an expired passport
may be presented for entry into the USA, as long as the visa
itself has not been cancelled, is undamaged, is less than 10
years old and is presented with a valid non-expired passport,
provided that both passports are for the same nationality.
Nationals of countries not referred to in the chart above are
advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements.
Take note the USA does not participate in the Schengen visa
scheme.
TYPES AND COST
Tourist, business, transit and student visas: US$160.
Travellers who are visa-free under the Visa Waiver Program
do not require a transit visa, but must obtain ESTA-authori-
sation prior to travel.
VALIDITY
Visas may be used for travel to the USA until the date of
expiry as long as presented with a valid passport. Some visas
are valid for multiple entries. The length of stay in the USA is
determined by US immigration officials at the time of entry.

APPLICATION TO
Embassy or consulate. All visitors requiring a visa must
attend an interview at the nearest US consulate/embassy.
The USA does not participate in the Schengen visa scheme.
WORKING DAYS
Varies widely - check with embassy/consulate for current
processing times. At the US Embassy in the UK, there is a
six-day wait for appointments and visa processing takes
three working days.
ENTRY WITH CHILDREN AND PETSDogs and cats may enter the USA provided that you have
a current certificate of health signed by a veterinarian in
your home country, as well as proof of vaccinations. Many
animals are not allowed to be brought into the USA; you can
find a complete list on the US Customs and Border Protec-
tion website ( www.cbp.gov).
6.6. EMBASSIES INFORMATION IN UNITED STATES
In United States there are 985 foreign embassies and consulates. By clicking here you will be able to find the embassy you
require in alphabetical order.
6.7. CURRENCY AND BANK INFORMATION
€1 = US$1.09
£1 = US$1.45
CREDIT CARDS

BANKING HOURSVariable, but generally Mon-Fri 0830-1700. In major cities
newer banks are competing with one another and have
extended hours, including weekend service.
DUTY FREE
The following goods may be imported by visitors over 21
years of age into the USA without incurring customs duty:
Further information on US customs regulations is available
online ( www.cbp.gov).
BANNED IMPORTS
Weapons and drugs.
6.8. FOOD AND DRINKS IN CALIFORNIA
California has always been a social melting pot, and this
is reflected in its modern, cosmopolitan cuisine with an
endless variety of ethnic influences. Northern California
spawned America’s local food movement, with an emphasis
on fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables, grass fed beef
and humanely raised animals - virtually changing the way
America eats.
Food trucks, or mobile restaurants, have become a California
phenomena - you can find them parked outside of office
buildings, universities, public parks, and sporting events -
usually with long lines. Some customers even follow their
favourite food truck on Twitter so they’ll always know where
to find their favourite foods.
SPECIALITIES
Steak California is an historic haven for cattle and cattle
ranchers, today the tradition lives on with filet mignon and
porterhouse cuts at steakhouses across the state.
Seafood Californians consume far more seafood per capita
than the rest of the country, and fishermen bring 300
different species to market each year. Dungeness crab,
shrimp, and swordfish are especially popular.
Clam chowder San Francisco is known for serving thick
clam chowder in a bread bowl.
California wines Northern California is famous for wines
and vineyards dating back to 1855, especially white wine.
Ghirardelli chocolate Another speciality from San Francisco,
Ghirardelli has been making speciality chocolate since 1852
using a unique manufacturing process.
Sourdough bread: This was the bread made in Northern
California during the California Gold Rush. Today,
Sourdough Sam is the mascot of the San Francisco 49ers
football team.
Tofu California is a health conscious culture with a variety
of vegetarian and vegan options, including bean curd called
tofu.

GUIDE
Sparkling wine White California sparkling wines are made
in the Methode Champenoise style in Northern California
where the temperatures can be cooler.
Tacos California shares a border with Mexico and offers
some of the most authentic and spicy Mexican food in the
United States, especially in San Diego where fish tacos can
be as cheap as one dollar each.
Fruit California’s climate is ideal for growing fruit year
around, especially citrus like lemons and oranges. Avocados,
grapes, apples, and strawberries also grow especially well.
TIPPING
15% of the bill is customary, 20% for excellent service.
Bartenders should be tipped at least one dollar per drink,
regardless of the beverage price.
REGIONAL DRINKS
Though many people think wine is the best option in Cali-
fornia, there are also a variety of micro-breweries serving
excellent pale-ales and lagers, like Anchor Steam Brewing
Company in San Francisco or Sierra Nevada Brewing
Company in Chico. Touring the breweries is a fun option
and a good way to taste a variety of beer at a discounted
price.
DRINKING AGE
Drinking laws in California are very strict and widely
followed. Individuals must have government ID showing
they are over 21 years old to purchase, order or drink alcohol.

6.10. TRAVELING AROUND CALIFORNIA
BY AIR
California is the third largest state in USA and has more
than 15 international and commuters airports, with many
scheduled and low cost carriers linking cities across the
state.
ROAD CONDITIONS
Driving in California can be a pleasurable activity along the
famously beautiful Highway 1, or an exercise in frustration
in Los Angeles at rush hour.
The roads and highways are well maintained. Driving
around California is simple, thanks to its network of inters-
tates and highways.
Foreign drivers need a valid driver’s license and proof of
ownership or permission to drive a rental car.
SIDE OF ROAD: RIGHT
CAR HIRE
Minimum age for hirers is 25. You need a valid driver’s
licence, a passport (for non-US citizens) and a credit card
for a security deposit. Alamo, Budget, Thrifty and Dollar are
among the wealth of car hire companies in California. The
hire of self-drive campers or motorhomes is also recom-
mended.
