Reflecting on Our Communities a Global and Local Perspective

Building local awareness for the 2016 delegation to the U.S. Mexican Border began April 19th at Wayne State University. We were

invited by Amnesty International to present our workshop titled the Causes of Migration. There were 60 in attendance.

Our next opportunity to present our work shop, Causes of Migration was during Women Creating Caring Communities Day of

Workshops, August 20th. Our work shop had 7 participants in attendance. The event had over 50 participants attending various

workshops.

Below you will find links to video dialogues of the panel discussion that followed our joint workshop on the causes of migration and

its impact on families in Metro Detroit. This was a collaboration between SOA Watch Labor Caucus and Michigan United sponsored

by Metro Detroit APRI.

The Mobilization

Our first stop of the mobilization was to the Eloy Detention Center (1705 East Hanna Road, Eloy, AZ 85131). Hundreds of migrants,

students, members of religious communities, veterans, and human rights activists gathered outside of the Eloy Detention Center in

Arizona, to call for the release of the incarcerated migrants, for an end to profiteering of human suffering, and for justice for all.

Speakers addressed the connection between US militarization in Latin America and forced migration to the United States, and

described the horrors of living inside detention centers like private, for-profit CCA-run Eloy.

The next part of our journey was a Veteran-led march in Nogales to kick off on the U.S. side of a march to the boarder wall. We

joined approximately 1500 to 2000 people from across the US and Latin American to Say:

1. Close the School of the Assassins

2. End Militarization at Home and Abroad

3. Say Yes to Immigration
