With passionate commitment, this city’s

finest chamber musicians come together

to create Melbourne Chamber Orchestra,

a reimagination of the orchestra for our

city today and a unique expression of its

extraordinary musical talent and spirit.

MCO captivates audiences with its

unique world of sound, combining both

the emotional grandeur of an orchestra

and the dynamic intimacy of chamber

music. MCO can be a mini-symphony,

a string consort, or a chamber ensemble.

In addition to performing as MCO, we

perform as Australian Octet, the nation’s

only professional string octet, and MCO

Virtuosi, a string consort directed by

Rebecca Chan.

Artistic Director William Hennessy

meticulously crafts each MCO concert

to enchant the ears, touch the heart, and

inspire the mind. The orchestra performs

from seven centuries of music including

iconic works by the likes of Mozart, Vivaldi

and Bach, as well as rarely-heard gems and

unforgettable miniatures.

MCO’s performances can be enjoyed in its

two series at the Melbourne Recital Centre

and the Deakin Edge, Federation Square.

Outside Melbourne, the orchestra is one

of Australia’s leading regional tourers of

classical music, presenting an ambitious

program of concerts and education

workshops in every corner of Victoria.

The organisation that started as Australia

Pro Arte, and has been known as

Melbourne Chamber Orchestra since 2009,

celebrates its 25th anniversary of presenting

concerts in 2016. With passion, dedication,

determination and skill, a generation of

musicians has created this vibrant and

unique musical force for Melbourne.

Our founder Jeffrey Crellin had a vision:

a Melbourne-based orchestra that would

combine Victoria’s finest musicians on

a chamber scale. It was an audacious

undertaking, but one which immediately

established itself with strong support from

audiences. From its initial privately-funded

pilots, the organisation has grown to become

one of Australia’s leading professional

orchestras and one of the most significant

regional tourers of orchestral music in

the country.

The 2016 season epitomises the elements

that have made APA/MCO a vital part of

Melbourne’s musical life for a quarter of

a century: the finest orchestral musicians;

meticulous curation of great music from

across the centuries; and a spirit of collegial

music making that brings joy to the stage

at every concert. With the magnificent

leadership of our current Artistic

Director, William Hennessy, these

values continue to thrive.

We’ve pulled out the stops for

this milestone year; I look

forward to celebrating with you.

It is a wonderful time for music in our

country, with MCO itself being one of

the beneficiaries: able to sustain within its

membership an outstanding collection of

gifted and deeply committed musicians, who

joyfully share the ideals of chamber music

sensitivity in forces ranging in number from

five to twenty-eight.

We have planned a season of musical

highlights. The mystery and darkness of

Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and his ecstatic

Clarinet Concerto in the company of Ravel

and Debussy, the two French composers

who come closest to Mozart’s aesthetic

ideals. Bach from many angles, including

a concerto generally known as a keyboard

concerto but here performed in its

original conception as a violin concerto of

remarkable virtuosity, a beautiful new work

from Calvin Bowman for whom MCO

audiences have consistently shown great

enthusiasm, and two of Mendelssohn’s most

popular works, the Hebrides Overture and

the Violin Concerto, with the prodigious

Australian violinist Grace Clifford as soloist.

There has never been such an abundance of

marvellous Australian soloists. The eminent

Australian soprano Sara Macliver will share

her love and mastery of Bach with us, and

consummate pianist David Fung generously

offers us two Mozart piano concerti in the

one program. We are also blessed with the

artistry of harpist Melina van Leeuwen

in French masterpieces; clarinettist David

Griffiths in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto; and

violinists Rebecca Chan and Anne-Marie

Johnson in concertos by Haydn and Bach

respectively.

We welcome you to our 2016 season. With

so many highlights you can see that our aim

has been to make it impossible for you not

to come!

Sunday 6 March, 2:30PMMelbourne Recital Centre

Friday 11 March, 7:30PMDeakin Edge, Federation Square

Proportion, balance, elegance—our 2016 season opens with four iconic works, offering four very different visions of Classical beauty.

Two of the most enduring works from

Mozart’s artistic zenith showcase his

extraordinary emotional range as a mature

composer. Audience favourite David Griffiths

performs the solo in the serene Clarinet

Concerto, Mozart’s final concerto work, which

is contrasted with one of his most tempestuous

visions, the Symphony No. 40 in G minor.

Ravishingly beautiful French vignettes for

harp and strings epitomise the clarity of

spirit of turn-of-the century French music.

Brilliant young harpist Melina van Leeuwen

joins MCO to perform in Ravel’s sparkling

Introduction and Allegro and Debussy’s Danses sacrée et profane.

MCO Virtuosi

Of course, there was never a gypsy palace. How could there have been? And yet, the old tales persist about the mystical palace, appearing at the top of the hill through the midnight mists… the wild nights! the dancing! the fiddle playing!…

Nearly 300 years ago in Eastern Europe,

hundreds of gypsy melodies were collected for

the Uhrovska Collection, providing a rare and

unique snapshot of a folk tradition that existed

alongside the courtly music of the Baroque.

In this evocative ensemble

project, MCO Virtuosi director

Rebecca Chan weaves a colourful

and entrancing musical tapestry, tracing the

spirit and energy of gypsy music across half

a millennium of music. Witty dances by

Telemann, virtuosic concerti by Vivaldi and

Haydn and a spectacular string symphony

of CPE Bach will transport you with their

infectious vitality.

Bach:

The many faces of the Baroque's great genius

Sunday 19 June, 2:30PMMelbourne Recital Centre

Friday 24 June, 7:30PMDeakin Edge, Federation Square

No name is more synonymous with Baroque

music than Bach. Through his prolific output,

he brought the musical language of the time

to the pinnacle of its expressive power, fusing

intellect, technique and emotion into some of

the most enduring music of all. This program

explores the enormous range of contrasting

moods and colours in Bach’s music, from the

sublime cantatas to his ecstatic and virtuosic

string concerti.

Sara Macliver is a musical living treasure. Her

superb soprano voice is the perfect vehicle

for the moving Bach arias she performs with

MCO in this program. Sara also performs

Calvin Bowman’s lush song cycle Die Linien des Lebens (The Lines of Life) which was

written for her and premiered with the

Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2010.

The program also showcases brilliant young

violinist Anne-Marie Johnson as the soloist in

Bach’s dazzling D minor Violin Concerto.

Sunday 14 August, 2:30PMMelbourne Recital Centre

Two heavenly piano concerti and two joyous orchestral masterpieces—a decadent all-Mozart delight.

As well as his skills as a composer, Mozart’s

reputation in his day also rested on his

exceptional abilities as a pianist. Many of

his 27 piano concerti were written for his

own concerts, and they are testament to his

technique and sensitivity at the keyboard.

Few Australian musicians have achieved an

international career like David Fung, whose

performances of Mozart’s piano concerti

have earned significant international praise.

Now based in New York, Fung is a laureate of

the prestigious Queen Elisabeth competition

in Brussels and the Arthur Rubinstein

competition in Tel Aviv, and performs for

celebrated orchestras and festivals across

the globe. David joins MCO to perform two

of Mozart’s most beautiful piano concerti

alongside the ebullient Symphony No 29 and

the majestic Serenata Notturna.

Australian Octet

Sunday 9 October, 2:30PMMelbourne Recital Centre

Prepare to be enthralled by the greatest work of chamber music.

In 1828, two months before his untimely death

at the age of just 31, Schubert completed

what would be his only string quintet.

Unperformed for more than two decades after

his death, it has risen to be admired as a work

of extraordinary emotional range and great

beauty, demanding exceptional skill from

its performers.

This performance of the Schubert Quintet by

members of Australian Octet is matched with

Dvorak’s atmospheric Sextet and a newly-

commissioned Octet from one of our finest

living composers, Graeme Koehne.

A crucible of musical history and a cultural

crossroads for centuries, the city of London

has drawn the likes of Mendelssohn and

Mozart from afar and nurtured the talents of

Britain’s finest composers.

MCO celebrates the musical spirit of

Britain in this program of vibrant colors

and contrasts, including music from the

eight-year-old Mozart’s divinely charming

London Sketchbook, Mendelssohn’s timeless

masterpiece the Hebrides Overture, and

atmospheric cameos by Warlock, Ireland

and Byrd.

Grace Clifford is one of the great violin

soloists of the next generation. While not yet

18, Grace made many fans as she won the

coveted Symphony Australia Young Performer

perform Vaughan-William’s transcendent
