January is Vocational Service Month

The Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento was treated to a dose of wisdom and farming history by our own Dick Marshall on Friday afternoon. From the Roman times in Belgium and France (where farming mechanization began before being wiped out during the Dark Ages) to today’s modern wheat combines clearing 20 acres per hour with GPS guided precision, Dick weaved fact and knowledge with quick wit and, well, his own charm. The Group learned of Cyrus McCormick the

inventor of the first mechanical reaper used to harvest grain. The combination of the consistent productivity of the reaper and the inertia of the industrial revolution (consider the trans-continental railroad as a cherry on top) drove instant efficiencies in farming across America and the world. In rapid succession (comparatively) companies like McCormick Harvester (now International Harvester), Best and Holt (now Caterpillar Tractor Co.), John Deere and even Ford developed faster, more efficient and BIGGER farming machines. Alongside the growing efficiencies, the percentage of the population living on farms and growing food has decreased from 90% 200 years ago to only 2% now. Talk about change, the ultimate constant! Congratulations Siva Sivakumaran for pulling the King of Hearts and

winning a free lunch! “Luan”, “Yeah Aure'lien ”, “Isn’t it a little early for Heine to start advertising the demotion dinner all the way on June 23?” “It depends on who you talk to Aure’lien, for some reason it really upset Bill Bevier but Ken Wilson and some others just laughed”.

Alexis Louie and her parents, Scott and Diane, were present Friday as Alexis, a 2015-2016 Rotary Youth Exchange winner (sponsored by the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento), had her host country announced. From a fine list of three countries, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand, she found herself destined to experience Japanese culture! She and her family were thrilled and one couldn’t help but see the look of adventure and positivity in Alexis’ eyes. Both are traits that will suit her well during her travels.

Volunteers Needed for Mexico Trip The Rotary house-building trip to Tijuana is just over two months away and we still need volunteers!

Most important, we need at least one woman over 21. The River City Interact Club plans to send one or two members – at least one of whom is female – and we cannot send teenage girls on a trip with adult men as the only chaperones.

Tentatively, we plan to leave West Sacramento on Friday, March 18, 2016, after the Rotary meeting, drive halfway, spend the night north of LA and drive the rest of the way on Saturday. We will be led across the border by Amor representatives and will set up camp that day.

We will build from Sunday through Wednesday, breaking camp and driving home on Thursday, March 24, 2016. The initial cost estimate is about $500 per person, which includes transportation, food and building materials.

Please contact Paul Kolarik at [email protected] or 916-715-4853 for more information or to volunteer.
